  • For a brief moment in time, between 1536 and 1538, a plan existed to join in marriage Mary Tudor, daughter of Henry VIII, king of England, and the Infante Louis, second son of Manuel, King of Portugal.
Forgotten by most, it´s no surprise that this marriage project is rarely mentioned today, after all, it was just a plan that never became a reality.
Nevertheless, it´s tumultuous history, filed with highs and lows, mirrored the tensions present at that moment in Europe, mainly born from the rivalry between Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and Francis I, king of France.
This union was one of the cornerstones of the politics of Charles V against his rival, and, at some point, even included a marriage between Henry VIII himself and Charles´s niece, Maria, Infanta of Portugal.
So, on this video, I’m going to try to understand the origins and potential of this marriage, as well as the reasons to way it never happened.

He probably thought an advantageous marriage for Mary might be a potential risk to his other heirs. Plus he was vindictive, Mary natually took her mother's side in her parents divorce.

I certainly think Mary would have been much happier in a marriage with Luis than she was in her later marriage at age 38 with that other cousin, Philip of Spain (son of Charles V), who was 11 years her junior., and abandoned her when she was unable to have children. If she had married Luis at age 20 as projected, perhaps her chances of having children would have been greater, and had she succeeded in doing so, her children would also become heirs to the English throne, thus cancelling out the reign of the legendary Queen Elizabeth I and changing English and European history forever.

I didn't know about these marriage projects, & you explained the complicated politics behind it clearly. It sounds like two master politicians & a deluded egomaniac- Henry was _never_ going to outwit those two :D The end was one of the best bits of speculative alternate history I've ever heard- one that probably would've been much happier for Mary Tudor, & she likely would've been a good queen or duchess in a Catholic country, for all the reasons you mentioned: being the granddaughter of the Catholic Monarchs would've given her prestige & endeared her to people, & she couldn't have had a better teacher for the job. It was really only her religion that was a problem in England- the people still had such love for & loyalty to her that Queen Jane Grey could never have kept the throne. The possibility of Mary as Queen of Portugal is very interesting, but I can't imagine what would've happened when Mary's brother Edward VI died- I can't see Catholic Portugal & Protestant England under the same rule, tho they would've had a kickass empire!

I feel sorry for Mary, for the frist 18 years of her life she was hailed as heir to the thine, the "princess of Wales" (and acted like a PofW) there where other Queen at the time and Henry eventually was coming to terms that Mary would be Queen, because she was heir her marriage was one of the most important topics at the time, who ever she married would have been King of England.

Also as we know, henry viii's son died in 1553 so Mary can also use her birthright and claim the English throne as she did in real history so the English and the Portuguese kingdoms would have United,(although I don't think the English wouldn't have accepted to be swallowed by the Portuguese and probably have found someone or even a second child of Mary and Louis if they had more childern),Mary,i think would have profited a lot by marrying a second son of a king since her husband will only be a king consort and Mary will have the real power ,if she had married an heir to the throne, the king she married would force Iberian culture and possibly swallow up england to the horror of many English people

It's amazing to look into all the subtleties of marriage when European kings were considered infallible and chosen by God. If Mary had a child that survived childhood, it's hard to say if Elizabeth would ever have even been allowed to live, much less be crowned.

In 1505, the new King of Castile; Philip I and Henry VII (along with Elvira Manuel) colluded to sideline Catalina of Aragon in favour of a match between Eleanor of Austria and Henry VIII.
But when Philip died in 1506 and Eleanor's worth in the royal marraige market plummeted, Henry VII had to crawl back to Ferdinand the Catholic and Catalina. By this time, Henry VII had shown how unreliable an ally England was and Ferdinand made a match between Catalina and William IV, Duke of Bavaria (a genuinely swell guy). Ferdinand insisted Catalina return to Spain because no good had ever happened to her in England.
But Catalina was adamant about marrying Henry VIII.
If she had just returned to Spain and married William, she would've escaped her tragic fate as would her daughter.

    muito obrigado,
    yes earlier in history
england had a alliance and treaty with portugal...
its a fascinating and unkown marriage proposal, but not uncommon , london and lisboa.,...could have united, even earlier...
than with felipe II of castille....
the irony is, that felipe II of spain, was the * spanish claimiant of the portuguese throne,
before the braganzas and king consort of england & Ireland, his marriage to mary, mair- maria tudor,
all of this possibly happened , after the death of Manuel king of portugal.......and the succesion crisis in portugal....
    brifely spain,portugal, england and ireland...
philip II was also a descendant of henry II of england,,,,
also jon of gaunt ( duke of lanacaster: was a claimant to the throne of castille*, )
the plantagenet anjou- capet-valois garcenda -blois -borbons-habsburgs-braganzas had many ancestral links...
the tudors were actually a welsh dynasty, distantly related to the kings of wales like rodri the great and howell the good.., lord rhys too...,
via catherine of valois.... Henry VIII * great grandmother* had visconti, wittelsbach and orsini royal blood too...
the tudors who later became english & royal dynasty... much as the later braganzas did...
the habsburgs and their power and influence seem to get everywhere..., not just to spain, holy roman empire, austria, the vatican and elsewhere...
the later arrangement of * mary tudor queen consort of france and
queen mary stuart : queen consort of france,
in the * political game of marriages betweeen scotland and france- simmilar alliance to england and portugal....
the english reformation, and the violatile relationship, between european countries,.....and the related contemparies of henry viii king of england * ireland...,
the holy roman emperor, the king of spain, the ottoman sultan,
the king of sweden-denmark, the tsar of russia, the king of poland, portugal, scotland..
the doge of venice, duke of brittany-burgundy....
    duke of milan,
    the pope....

I would love if there was more content about king Manuel I children like Miguel da paz, the heir to all the Iberia kingdoms of the Avis dynasty (which in my opinion would have been much better than the union under the Habsburgs ) or Beatriz de Portugal or Duarte de Portugal and his children Maria princess of Parma, Catarina Duchess of braganza (who in my opinion had a much better claim for the Portuguese throne much more than felipe ii and any other candidates had) also the grandmother of king Joao iv, and then duarte who if he had lived after sebastião died, he would have become king of Portugal but he died before and did not marry leaving no legitime children (I also read that there was a case of jealous between him and king sebastião). I don’t see people talking much about them besides Joao iii and Isabel and sometimes Henrique or Maria. I honestly think all of these Avis siblings were super interesting.
    Love your videos.

Is she married a Portuguese bride, she'd likely have a son and considering she took the throne in our world, she'd likely bring a whole Habsburg-friendly Lusitan dynasty. She wouldn't be an infertile old lady married to Phillip II. The world would've been totally different, maybe this English King would've been on a Crusade in North Africa alongside King Sebastian of Portugal.
