An amazing and very beautiful song from the famous song writing collective of Hassler, Gerhardt, Bach und Simon 😉

According to the album's liner notes, the string arrangement is by Del Newman. The musicians on this track include Paul Simon himself on guitar, Bob James on keyboards, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Grady Tate on drums. This is one of those songs whose lyrical content is more relevant now than ever before.

This song makes me feel wistful. Have no idea why bc it’s not really sad but … it’s in a special category for me songs that make me feel loss. Seems like Bach ? Can’t listen to it and not feel something is gone. After my comment though I must say it’s a beautiful song 😂

I think this is one of those Paul Simon tunes where the song is much better than the recording of it. The album version is fine and all...but I don't think the string arrangement or any of the other instruments add to the song - him and his guitar is all you need for this one. It's an astonishingly beautiful song. It doesn't hurt that Bach helped out.

I always think of this track as a 'twin' to S & G's 'America'; there is some similarity.

When he gets to the "And I dreamed that I was dying" bit was when I went "Oh, I've heard this." It does have a timeless, almost hymn-like quality which makes it endlessly adaptable or coverable. Plus, it always helps when you're working from a Bach melody. 😉 Paul Simon WAS sort of connected with politics over the years (Simon and Garfunkel also recorded a song called "America"), so any time he comes along with a song like this begs the question 'why now?' But I can see how this coming out during the turmoil around Watergate gave it that perspective.

So, here we are. If "Kodachrome" is the album's attractive face, "American Tune" is the heart. The centerpiece. It's literally in the middle of the LP. And, I appreciate you for trekking outside your comfort zone to check out the lyrics. Isn't it strange, that this heavily lyrics-driven song is the one you spent quite a long time thinking over? I enjoyed your review and thoughts on craftsmanship greatly.
So, don't take the following as criticism: it's just a notion. Songs like this one show the limits of this channel (and that's ok), because in pop music lyrics sometimes make or break a masterpiece. "American Tune" is a beautiful piece of music based on Bach, but it's Simon's poem that really makes it stand out. It's because of the lyrics that The Rolling Stone picked it as The Song of the Year. With a few well-crafted lines Simon was able to put into words the fatigue the common working class American was feeling after Nixon's win solidified the continuation of the Vietnam War and everything else. The song begins with the sentiment "I'm alright, just weary to my bones" and ends with "I'm just trying to get some rest, that's all". And, because Simon's writing is so good, the song is still relevant to this day. He managed to verbalize something universal and timeless. It's not just "an American tune".

Not sure why this one didn't make the greatest hits that you had in college - I guess it could be that the message is not as clear as Something So Right or St. Judy's Comet, so I doesn't make a greatest hits. What is the rock band you are currently playing in?

It's a great song - but I can't forgive him for ripping off Bach so blatantly for the verse melody. The Third Coast Ensemble have done a great video where they perform the Bach composition and American Tune back to back. See ruclips.net/video/R_E9tQlma5I/видео.html
Btw, it wasn't the only time Mr Simon - whose music I love - did some ripping off he should at least apologize for.
