I had a storm similar to this hit me in the Virgin Islands. I immediately pulled up anchor and rode it out all night. Dodged other yachts that broke loose. Virgin Gorda was not fun that evening. It took 24 hours of different divers to untangle anchor rode chain since power yachts and sailing yachts twist different. I was in a 51ft Grand Banks with full tanks. Just for your info from a regular watcher : DANA es el acrónimo de “Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos”. Una DANA es un sistema de baja presión o depresión en los niveles altos de la atmósfera so DANA is the meteo term for whats happening. As far as I know the storm does not have a name.
It was a thunderstorm guys, happens sometimes after some warm weather. Nothing to do with hurricane season. All these boaters didn’t think much of the forecasts so they weren’t prepared. Bad luck for them, should teach them not to underestimate weather conditions.
Weather warnings don't mean anything to dumb people. As windsurfer I often search out the blast wave in front of a good storm. Its surprising on a summer day how people can hit the beach and not notice the the dark clouds rolling in and the ocean line of white caps heading there way. Then when it hits the beach or chaos rings out with lethal umbrellas etc being tossed around, people screaming in panic. I often get asked there is not enough wind for you, and I will have to point to the sky and ocean and say there will be plenty in 10 mintues!
The one thing I don't understand is that this storm was forecasted. Already for many days it was clear this storm was coming. Then you go and find shelter and if you cannot find shelter you anchor where you have space to swing around and if you look at navionics you can see that about 1 nm off shore it is still only 20 mtrs deep. The larger sailing yacht should have gone there, dropped all the chain she had onboard, have the crew stand by and ride out the storm. Or........you take to sea and you ride the storm out there. All the smaller boats also had a chance to get out of the path of the storm, so why didn't they ? I do see quite a few charter boats and my guess is we are dealing with people who don't know how to anchor. 60 kts of wind is a lot, but it is possible to survive, especially when it has been forecasted for days already. I just don't get it why this happened in this way.
I live in Palma. Yes you are right, it was well forecasted. I was out yesterday morning and was monitoring its approach, I rushed home to avoid it - surely these boats could have done the same.....if they were actually monitoring the weather????
I was out yesterday in Mallorca, and the storm caught me, I saw it coming and I knew it was going to get us. But in this situation, is better not to anchor and go out and hold your bow to the strong winds with your engines. It was only 20 minutes of strong winds, after that all was fine.
This storm was forecast 2days previous , absolutely 💯 no sympathy for these idiots. Though I do hope nobody was injured , insurance premiums are gonna sky rocket 🙏✌️❤ BLESSINGS & thanks for the report
If they knew the storm was coming from NW why did they stay in a bay open to NW? they could have anchored to the eastern part of the island, thus getting less waves and hundreds of miles of free sea behind them
That's merely a category 1 tropical storm. Imagine what The Philippines has to deal with when a category 5 makes landfall with winds up to 240 mph like typhoon Haiyan in Dec 2014ish?
Months of negotiations lie ahead with insurance companies as they try and find clauses that avoids paying for damage. Just been there with my flooded boat, 6 months later no payout...check every line of the small print and if you leave a side door open on a Super Yacht and it sinks...good luck with that claim!
I guess a lot of them will not get any money. This was a forecasted storm, there was no reason to be unprepared and there was no reason to be anchored incorrectly in the path of the storm. Already for many years I am advocating that charter boats need a professional captain onboard. Done with the BS that you can rent a 50' sailing yacht (monohull or catamaran) without a license. Too many people have no clue how to handle the boat or what to do in these situations. On top of that there are more and more boats out on the water, creating a dangerous situation just by being so close to each other and not knowing how to anchor properly.
the Mediterranean Sea has reached tropical levels...but history and legends of the sea say that the Mediterranean has never been a calm sea...not at all...
@@fishtigua Yes, but not with as much notice as in the Caribbean, where you know you should leave the hurricane zone between June and November. We can’t just leave the Mediterranean in Summer because there might be a storm. We are lucky if we get 1-2 days notice. If you’re not on the island at the time, or if you have to work and don’t have time to sail around the island to the leeward side, what are you supposed to do? Agreed, sailors who were at anchor and left the boat for a few hours should have looked at the forecast.
Guys you don’t know the full situation of what happened. Leave your speculation in your own minds and less of the ‘key board warrior’ style…it’s not a good look
Why were so many on the windward side, so close to shore, of the island given the prevailing forecast, irrespective of the thunderstorms etc? Lots of ify decision making or non attention to the weather coming down from France amd N Spain. The synoptic situation was there. So sad to see the boats like that. Insurance will get a hit again.
I think the only super yacht in the video was Wally Love, and I'm not even sure everyone would agree it's a super yacht. At 30m/98' it's longer than the 24m/78' many consider the boundary between yacht and super yacht, but as a sailing yacht it probably has less interior volume than a lot of motor yachts under 24m. My guess would be none of those boats had professional crews, while crewed yachts probably left the area before the storm hit.

that wally was built for that kind of weather someone should have been on it. 62 mph is very doable safely on a sail. Being in Florida if you have a blue water boat land and other boats destroy it we take it out and ride the storm out

In Croatian coast there is at least 15 such storms every season...they last 20-45min. Why so many out there near the coast is a riddle indeed. Instead of following the forecast and leaving the decided to stay which was bad decision. I wonder how many charter yachts destroyed?
