It's sad when people don't understand the Mafia. What did they want, a happy joyful ending with Vito and Joe skipping off into the sunset together holding hands? This ain't the fun life.
@agent2800 since the beginning of the game i figured the families would turn the two against each other . i just thought they'd both get killed together making some sort of last stand or joe would get killed and vito would go berserk and shoot all the families up until there no mafia left and dies in the process .
Blazzered It is clearly said that he wasn't a part of the deal. If you can't guess what that means, you shouldn't play any games like this that require some intelligence from the gamer.
+Dark Gomamon many fans will argue that he could've fought back. Joe had his own gun, and even if he didn't, he could've turned the gun on the guy sitting next to him and shot the driver too. I'm not saying Joe is still alive. I'm saying that it's possible and he isn't 100% confirmed dead. I personally prefer the dark ending, but again his fate is technically unknown.
Mother and Father - Dead Sister - Cut off all ties Henry - Dead Marty - Dead Joe - (Technically unknown but most likely) Dead Boss(es) - Dead or don't trust Vito anymore "Cause the guy who wants too much, risks losing absolutely everything." Vito has truly lost everything.
+Arrivederci If you don't give him some territory in Mafia 3 he will betray you and you will have to kill him but don't have to it depends on how you play the game and the choices you make
What bothered me the most was the fact Joe sided with you during the last mission. The fact that he stated he threw away his wishes just to save Vito makes it all the more painful when you find out he dies because of a deal you made.
+McCrillis Nsiah I'm all for a "bad" ending, but this one felt pretty stupid. Mainly, it felt rushed. Maybe if they did a little more after the fact, it would have been better.
McCrillis Nsiah Ok, so stupid was a poor choice of words. I just meant it felt low quality, like "Oh well, that's done, let's just wrap this up." I love the idea of the ending, I just felt the execution was kinda lacking.
+McCrillis Nsiah So right man, finally someone understands. At first I thought this game is like GTA where you go helping your gang or making something off yourself, but at the final chapters I realized that it was to show what can happen to a man who chooses a life like that, as El Greco said, one day your luck will end for only one reason: because you choose this kind of life.
+McCrillis Nsiah GTA 4 was pretty dark to be honest with you. It's the only game in the franchise were storyline really matters. Niko life was pretty painful, and so was Vito's.
_"You know, the world isn't run by the laws written on paper. It's run by people. Some according to laws, others not. It depends on each individual how his world will be, how he makes it. And you also need a whole lot of luck, so that somebody else doesn't make your life hell. And it ain't as simple as they tell you in grade school. But it is good to have strong values and to maintain them. In marriage, in crime, in war, always and everywhere. I messed up. So did Paulie and Sam. We wanted a better life, but in the end we were a lot worse off than most other people. You know, I think it's important to keep a balance in things. Yeah, balance, that's the right word. Cause the guy who wants too much, risks losing absolutely everything. Of course, the guy who wants too little from life, might not get anything at all."_ _in the end, its the best friend that kills you."_ -Tommy Angelo, And Frank
Nikkita104 i remember the first time i finished it. I wasn't very impressed with the game. And by the time this end scene was running, i was just feeling like a zombie. Suddenly i hear vito yell "where are they taking joe." My ears perked up, my eyes frantically looked at the screen just as Leo looked out the window and said, "Joe wasnt part of our deal." I felt a bullet go through my heart. Piano cue started up to accompany my cries. First time i ever cried cuz of a bloody video game.
beautiful ending...made me cry.....could have been better if there was an eye contact between Vito and joe before they separate...could have enhanced the emotions
well the part where Vito told Joe everything was alright was close enough. kind of gave his best friend who just saved his life his word that'd he'd be ok only to be known as a liar in the last moment of Joe's life.
this game is so underrated. I didn't play this till just now and I have to say this game is way better than gta5. you can do more with money and be online in gta5 but mafia 2 has a better story and seems more realistic in its gameplay.
I love this ending. As soon as Vito and Joe are split you know there's something going on and it's not good. When Leo apologises, you can see Vito thinking "I've got to save Joe!" but then he quickly realises this is not an option and he can do absolutely nothing to save his friend. I really like this moment. At the same time he knows Leo saved his life and he owes him big time.
I dont think he will be in Mafia 3, i think he is dead cuz you can see on his wiki that he was delivered to Mr.Chu were he was tortured to death, remember when the old man says to Vito ''You saved my life, now it's my turn'' cuz Vito was also suposed to be killed by Mr.Chu group but only Joe was
Just finished Mafia 2, and I nearly shed a tear. This just shows that nobody is your friend in the mafia, everything is about making deals to better yourself. You can trust nobody. Joe was Vito's only true friend... and he's gone.
This ending is very instructive, that's how criminals always end up. Mafia 2 is not a game about cool mafia guys, but about why you mustn't be a criminal and which criminal gangs are actually rotten and not cool at all, as shown in the movies.
Fantastic ending ... this game had it all...great graphycs, great driving a fantastic story...honestly games like this one should appear more often...yearly if possible
For all of you saying that was a disappointing ending, you're wrong. Look how emotionally attached everyone got to Joe. That is the mark of a great ending, to leave you with hope yet not knowing what happens. Whoever wrote the story to this game is a great writer.
Damn this was so sad man , legit 10 seconds before joe was saying how he had the oppertunity to get whatever he wanted if he killed Vito and now it looks like Vito done the same thing but went through with it
I literally cried... But I don't think Joe is dead. I mean he is smart enough to know Wats going on. And during the scene where Leo calls Vito to a different car... U can see Joe's reaction as if something is wrong but he acts cool though. I know he is not dead. I know
I understand why it ended this way. Joe was as much involved as Vito in the whole fuck up. The only reason Vito got saved was coz he saved Leo's life. So Leo returned the favour when everybody else wanted him dead. In the end, Vito actually is nothing but a pawn, he never became anything more than that in the game. They could continue this story further maybe, show Vito's rise from this point or something, but then in an open world game, the main character works best as the guy who does jobs for others for money which makes so many missions.
I've done some research. This is what I got: Joe was taken by Leo's men to the tongs, the *deal* was if Vito killed Carlo, he would be clear of the tongs. I hope this cleared some doubts, visit the mafia wiki for more info about Joe.
This is actually a very accurate ending. This shit happens in the mafia and theres nothing you can do about. You see this in the movies but you don't feel it unlike here.
i dont think joe is dead...i mean he did some stupid things but overall he is smart...i believe that he realised that there was something wrong when they sent him to a different car and he kinda expected that they would get rid of him but lets not forget he had a gun with him... my other theory is that they made him work for them secretly and only tried to separate him from vito because they always fuck things up when they are together..and thats why they exiled vito to new bordeaux...
I also remember first seeing that cut scene and I knew something was up when the dude that held the door for joe looked the way he did and joe sounded unsure as hell when he said” we’ll see ya over there “
in video i see joe in car and someone of leo guards sit next to joe and talk to him maybe he offer him a deal diffrend deal about leo and vito i dont think joe die because in mafia 3 leo driver look correctly like joe (this is my opinion)
I love the way these games work because of how realisticly tragic they are. Vito is desperate when he is younger and starts pulling petty crimes and gets in with the wrong crowd. as he gets higher up in the mafia, he starts doing hits and drugs, all the while he's spent time in jail, his sister fades out of his life, his house gets burned, and friends like Henry get killed. And when he finally thinks he's made it out of the mess, "Sorry Vito, Joe wasn't part of our deal."
As a kid you hate this ending so much but as we grew older this a perfect mafia ending mysteries and sadness and left with no words that’s how the real world is and OG Tommy’s death speech describes Vito and Joe really, a guy who wants too much risks absolutely anything and that guy might not get anything at all
Well moral of the story Vito have lost everything, he was want money, respect, cars, girls and he end up lost his friends, his family and now he have blood on the hands and will always be haunt by all he did in the mafia This really show how Mafia world is in real life nothing fun and at the end of the day nothing good only blood and lost everyone you love the perfect ending I will always love this game even in 2024 this still a masterpiece.
I didn't like what happened, but what happened made the story great. To be honest when Leo said Joe isn't part of the deal I started spamming buttons in case it would do something. I predicted the game would end in Vito killing Joe, when I started playing, well, my prediction was pretty close.
we all love and feel sad for Joe cause we all have a friend/brother/cousin like him. :*(( I love joe, cant wait till mafia 3 to hopefully see him again.
I literally finished Mafia 2 5 minutes ago...And i must admint that I am crying. The ending is just terribly sad. My thought about this game is this game is i think it's among best games, if not the best, i have personally played.
GTA: LTA.
I almost cried at the end. Great music to go with the scene, though. Also, while I'd like to know what happens, Mafia 3 isn't gonna be a continuation... probably only cameos...
Same. I feel like everything in the game was so rushed, ig because of the director changes during the making of the game. The ending is good tho, but happens so quickly and there isnt really a climax.
The ending of this game reminds me of this line in a song called Run by Willy Mason, it says "All your big dreams, you fool you can't see, there's no time to look back, there's no time to look back, all your big dreams, you fool you can't see, it's gonna slip away now, it's gonna slip away now",that to me perfectly lines up with the look on Vito's face after Leo tells him Joe is not part of the deal he realises everything he wanted and cared for is gone and it's too late to do anything about it
It's been 3 years and a Mafia III still hasn't been confirmed, I really honestly can't see it happening. If it does though, that's IF - they NEED to improve big time. I loved this game, the first time I played it in 2011. Now? The second play through, I realized how much flaws it had. So if it comes out perhaps on next gen consoles, mind you - if it's also available on PS3, I'll opt towards that version, maybe they'll improve then. And they better let us know what happened to Joe, if he's dead the game won't be the same at all.
If you look closely the guard doesn't point a gun to Joe, so they will be 3 chances 1.Vito drives crazy then kill all of the mafia, but probably he spared Leo Galante or he just kill him? 2.Joe attack them and wounded so bad but he survived 3.Vito bail out from the car then save Joe The ending was cliffhanger though
What did you expect ? you people dont understand mafia What did you wanted, a happy joyful ending with Vito and Joe skipping off into the sunset together holding hands? This ain't the fun life.
@Lightingft I found that dialogue and it's not exactly like that, the dialogue shows what happened to Joe, he dies and Vito says a few words while the camera zooms out after he's had a chat with Frank Vinci, who basicly says that Joe still had some issues with Mr.Chu, but not that they're going to meet up or anything, it basicly states that Joe indeed died, if you wanna check it out search for Mafia II hidden text in chapter 15.
@Skoomax A cliffhanger is something that opens a game for a sequel. A shot to the face on the other hand is something that makes gives a story its feeling and meaning. So because that the game is not a cliffhanger that will open Vito's story for a sequel, that means the game has been completed and that its over, thats it.
I know, right?! Everybody here loving that ending, I can't understand how! After spending hours of my life investing in this character and the story, the climax is this 2 minute crap? I don't mind that Joe dies, it makes sense... but cmon man, give me something more! What happens to Vitto afterwards, and to the families?? Super disappointed with this shit ending
@BiteMyBios001 Just something to note, I have never seen any of 2K Martin's confirmations about him actually saying Joe is dead. Is there any sources about it?
+Kyle Reynolds Because this not a game like GTA where is supposed to make the protagonist rich and happy, it is a game to show what can happen to a man who chooses a life like that (loosing all his friends and family, serving years in jail, etc.)
Killing joe seemed so unnecessary and tacked on just so they could add drama to the ending which felt rushed. Poor/lazy writing. Plus game was way super short.
John Mcguirk WrongJoe was killed because he crossed the line. He is the true problem of the story and he pays for it. Vito survives because he saved Leo earlier. Its not lazy writing, its genre.
It's sad when people don't understand the Mafia. What did they want, a happy joyful ending with Vito and Joe skipping off into the sunset together holding hands? This ain't the fun life.
Nathan Johnson right
G e y?
Obviously but after Joe sees you go to prison and sorta redeems himself at the end just to still get killed is still a kick in the head
@agent2800 since the beginning of the game i figured the families would turn the two against each other . i just thought they'd both get killed together making some sort of last stand or joe would get killed and vito would go berserk and shoot all the families up until there no mafia left and dies in the process .
U r right this is like martin scorsese’s mafia movies always have a sad ending because mafia is not good it should explain this
I don't understand why people dislike this ending. It's a typical Mafia-style movie ending, it's pretty ambiguous and leaves you with questions.
It doesn't leave a single question.
+Dark Gomamon what happened to Joe?
Did he die or could he have fought back?
Will Joe be mentioned in the later game?
Will we see Joe again?
Blazzered It is clearly said that he wasn't a part of the deal. If you can't guess what that means, you shouldn't play any games like this that require some intelligence from the gamer.
+Dark Gomamon many fans will argue that he could've fought back. Joe had his own gun, and even if he didn't, he could've turned the gun on the guy sitting next to him and shot the driver too.
I'm not saying Joe is still alive. I'm saying that it's possible and he isn't 100% confirmed dead.
I personally prefer the dark ending, but again his fate is technically unknown.
Yes you can go over all the facts and calculate the possibilities but after you pull your head out of your ass there's only 1 possible ending.
Mother and Father - Dead
Sister - Cut off all ties
Henry - Dead
Marty - Dead
Joe - (Technically unknown but most likely) Dead
Boss(es) - Dead or don't trust Vito anymore
"Cause the guy who wants too much, risks losing absolutely everything."
Vito has truly lost everything.
He appears in mafia 3 as an old guy n he look really badass
Vito now has a new job, working as a lieutenant for Lincoln Clay in Mafia 3
does he get shot like Tommy Angelo?
@Alcatraz Kistin
He looks like Freddy Kruger :D
+Arrivederci If you don't give him some territory in Mafia 3 he will betray you and you will have to kill him but don't have to it depends on how you play the game and the choices you make
What bothered me the most was the fact Joe sided with you during the last mission. The fact that he stated he threw away his wishes just to save Vito makes it all the more painful when you find out he dies because of a deal you made.
Yea but i just hope Jo survive :(
+McCrillis Nsiah I'm all for a "bad" ending, but this one felt pretty stupid. Mainly, it felt rushed. Maybe if they did a little more after the fact, it would have been better.

+McCrillis Nsiah GTA 4 was pretty dark to be honest with you. It's the only game in the franchise were storyline really matters. Niko life was pretty painful, and so was Vito's.
You know what's sad about this ending? Joe probably thought last second that Vito was part of his murder:/
Joe will not Die hes smart, theres only 2 guys in the car
Still, he will think Veto set him up. Maybe...
Spider Man Who knows if he made it and meet Vito he will explain
Yeah, I just feel like Joe lacks the skill to get out of a situation like that. He is not exactly what I see as a "fighter"
+Spider Man And if he survived, it would completely ruin that sadness and harshness you feel at the end.
it's the theme that makes this one of the strongest endigs in gaming
When Leo says "Sorry kid, Joe wasn't part of our deal." and that crescendo happens...

Remember that 5 bucks you owe me...
Gosh that ending gave me manly tears... T~T
Really sad ending but iits really good
This legit brought a tear when I played it. I love Joe.
I literally finished Mafia 2 5 minutes ago...And i must admint that I am crying. The ending is just terribly sad.
My thought about this game is this game is i think it's among best games, if not the best, i have personally played.
GTA: LTA.
Girl: Boys will never understand what betrayal feels like
Boys: 1:14 T_T
Its 2020 still very emotional almost cry
Love the maze thing you put :)
I almost cried at the end. Great music to go with the scene, though. Also, while I'd like to know what happens, Mafia 3 isn't gonna be a continuation... probably only cameos...
Was not prepared for this abrupt ending! Rather disappointing, because I thought I was just getting into the game and "the end"!
Same. I feel like everything in the game was so rushed, ig because of the director changes during the making of the game. The ending is good tho, but happens so quickly and there isnt really a climax.
I get the chlls everytime that music starts and vito's dramatic face goes on
Mafia 2 remastered was a part of our deal.
1:16 when i heard this my heart cracked
That ending dissapointed me :(
Still gives me chills watching this ending
Mafia 2 truly represented that money doesn’t buy you happiness in my opinion change my mind
Glad Joe ended up living in Mafia 3.
Best ending in video game history
Did you play Mafia 1? ,)
Not even by a long shot.
The ending of this game reminds me of this line in a song called Run by Willy Mason, it says "All your big dreams, you fool you can't see, there's no time to look back, there's no time to look back, all your big dreams, you fool you can't see, it's gonna slip away now, it's gonna slip away now",that to me perfectly lines up with the look on Vito's face after Leo tells him Joe is not part of the deal he realises everything he wanted and cared for is gone and it's too late to do anything about it
When it showed the tower at the end I though we were going to hear gun shots
It's been 3 years and a Mafia III still hasn't been confirmed, I really honestly can't see it happening.
If it does though, that's IF - they NEED to improve big time. I loved this game, the first time I played it in 2011. Now? The second play through, I realized how much flaws it had. So if it comes out perhaps on next gen consoles, mind you - if it's also available on PS3, I'll opt towards that version, maybe they'll improve then.
And they better let us know what happened to Joe, if he's dead the game won't be the same at all.
Ya but won't be with them Vito or any of them
happy?
Mafia 3 sucks.
And 2k17 sucks as well
If you look closely the guard doesn't point a gun to Joe, so they will be 3 chances
1.Vito drives crazy then kill all of the mafia, but probably he spared Leo Galante or he just kill him?
2.Joe attack them and wounded so bad but he survived
3.Vito bail out from the car then save Joe
The ending was cliffhanger though
Look at 0:33 Joe keeps his gun! So he had a freaking gun! He had a gun in the car!!!!!!!!!!!!
+McCrillis Nsiah EXACTLY!
+MrJackassFans And there's the third option, Joe dies and Vito is left in anger and despair.
What did you expect ? you people dont understand mafia What did you wanted, a happy joyful ending with Vito and Joe skipping off into the sunset together holding hands? This ain't the fun life.
Mafia endings are never happy endings like when mafia 4 comes out it probably won’t be a happy ending
Best ending ever
Did you play Mafia 1? ,)
What a shit ending. It's not even an ending.
I didn't even know Carlo was the last boss -.-
I know, right?!
I like the suit, fit's perfect, and the hat when Vito shoots down and the shadow is his eyes, makes it looks like real gangster. 😎
This game have the best story line.
I think Joe is dead, but there is a chance that Leo’s driver in the end of mafia 3 is Joe
It 100% is Joe.
Hope so
wtf thats how it ends? I dont become a Don joe gets the shaft?!?!?! wtf!
Joe lived.
@BiteMyBios001 Just something to note, I have never seen any of 2K Martin's confirmations about him actually saying Joe is dead. Is there any sources about it?
It's an underrated masterpiece
I had to look this up because I was convinced there had to be something more to that game. God damn what a disappointment.
+Kyle Reynolds Because this not a game like GTA where is supposed to make the protagonist rich and happy, it is a game to show what can happen to a man who chooses a life like that (loosing all his friends and family, serving years in jail, etc.)
Well, what did you expect? This ain't some GTA fantasy. This is what true life in organized crime is suppose to feel.
Killing joe seemed so unnecessary and tacked on just so they could add drama to the ending which felt rushed. Poor/lazy writing. Plus game was way super short.
I agree with you
John Mcguirk WrongJoe was killed because he crossed the line. He is the true problem of the story and he pays for it. Vito survives because he saved Leo earlier. Its not lazy writing, its genre.
txgoldrush Damn right! Finally someone who understands the Mafia! This ending was great!
Jesse Faries Yep, it simply put, wasn't a gamers ending, just like Mass Effect 3. The ending fit the narrative and really, Joe was the instigator.
txgoldrush Definitely!
so sad
yet, we all knew it wouldnt be roses and sunshine. exiting that building you could just sense there wont be any "riding of into the sunset"
i got really depressed when this happened... i almost cried
