I'd say the latter group has a much stronger stance than the former. The former presupposes that the prevailing politics in societies throughout history have always been "good", so good people wouldn't criticize them. That is obviously not true, and the Left used to realize that and be the strongest proponents for free speech on the political axis. Once they achieved power, though, free speech was revealed to be not a fundamental value of theirs, but rather a tool which could be thrown away once it became a liability.
The current development of the left is quite disturbing. We should not for a moment believe that modern society is safe from political corruption akin to the one we saw in Communist Russia and Nazi Germany.

It's so sad. The fact a majority group who thrive on 'tolerance' lash out like this. How can anyone describe Lindsay: an honest, genuine, civil, intellectual, and responsible girl as a "hateful white supremacist transphobic devil"? She's a pleasure to listen to and hear about. Glad her story went viral.
it's absolutely deplorable for a university who should uphold these exact aforementioned values to alienate her as the example of what they don't want you to be-- a free thinking individual. I hope the Canadian gov't, schools, and public come to their senses in face of this wholly deserved global backlash.
This outrage isn't transphobia-- this isn't racism, sexism, hate speech-- whatever they'd like to believe. It's about the ability to express yourself, seek the truth, enlighten and innovate. Principles that are (for the most part) undeniably desired. We are holding an entire generation back by trying to be 'tolerant', it didn't work (or at least stopped working), it's time to move on.

I always thought of defending free speech as a liberal bulwark. To many liberals today, it seems no longer to be the case. I've been a member of the ACLU for 57 years, and I will go to my grave defending the right of anyone to free speech and a platform to be heard. Those denying those rights to those they disagree with, or closing classrooms to open debate, are inviting totalitarianism into their lives. Keep up the good work Lindsay. You're not alone.

God bless you Lindsay. Another real thinker and I commend the way you stand up to these thugs and have thoughtful ways of seeing the issues of today. I'm a decorated soldier that wishes I never ever went into the military to do anything for a country I don't even recognize anymore. I now live in a land that's upside down and foreign agents are running things here while our people tolerate nothing but garbage from them in order to prove just how gracious we are and tolerate. It sickens me to be honest. I fought for free speech for everyone, not just if you think your right. If your ideas are really good they will withstand the scrutiny of everyone, but if they're smoke, mirrors and lies, then you must simply stamp out others from even speaking because your side can't handle the objections or the light of common sense.

It is kindness in reaching out to try to help. Free speech is important it helped me and can end uo helping sooooo many people. One doesn't know someyimes but when someone reaches out in kindness and shares constructive critisicm it can truly help you even if you realize things years later but it helps. It is so necessary and so important. Out of humanity and kindness to one another it is a crucial component for each individual and important to society.

The problem with the left and far left has moved away from class struggle via trade unions due to low levels of industrial action into this Uber PC, identity politics driven bs. At the end of the day balance is needed. I still consider myself a leftist, but look at things from a different perspective.

Such a genuine soul. She presents her stance in a great way. I was very involved with the anti-war movement and the left in the early 2000's and I can't even recognize what I thought progressive ideas were supposed to mean. I grew up listening to punk and folk music and it was fighting chance for the good of all people not just a small group of approved people. I am only 35 years old. This shift came out of nowhere.

Hate speech, other than incite to violence, should not even be a subject for debate. Other speech like libel is a legal matter to be decided by the courts. A free exchange of ideas and opinions is vital in a free society. Liberalism today has morphed into a totalitarian view of how the world should be and who is entitled to speak and what they are allowed to say.
