    You know, I mean, just how far out of line was Rambukana? Really. Like, disciplinary-wise.
    He was acting like a cop abusing his power. He claimed to have the force of -- hell, not just college guidelines, but the law, in essentially detaining Lindsay and putting her through this Kafka-esque show trial. He should be punished for that. He didn't just call her over and say "Let's have a meeting about this thing I heard about in the class." He framed it as an official procedure pertaining to a legal issue -- about something universities are legally liable for these days in Canada. He just made that up, the same as a cop making up evidence for a crime. Yes, he should face some serious punishment from the school.

      Ahnootha respectfully disagree. We don't know how he requested for her to attend. He was appropriately attended by a policy interpreter and a junior academic. Their concerns were equally her fellow students welfare and her own development. No sanction other than further supervision was discussed at the meeting. It was understood that this could be upsetting for Lindsay. They attempted to concentrate on the need for academic soundness. It was actually Lindsay who returned again and again to treating it as an accusation. Inference of Transphobia. No staff member alleged that. Excess of the law requiring care, neglectful to that extent , possibly.

      Bruce -- Rambukanna directly invoked both Canadian law and university procedure in the show trial he appears to have personally produced. He wasn't following university procedure -- he wasn't acting on a formal complaint and it's unclear what he was acting on. But he did imply he was invoking procedure by keeping the "complaint" confidential. Instead of sharing his concerns with her one-on-one he conducted a show trial invoking university procedure _exactly as you describe._ He was abusing his power. Period.

      It's hypocritical in the extreme to claim that Lyndsay's actions were harming other people (when they weren't) while lying in order to deliberately harm her and her career. Sure, minorities might need some protection at times, but the majority need protection from theses hideous ideologues and their pernicious tentacles _all_ of the time. I mean, don't forget that Marxist university professors are sending wave after wave of brain-washed ideologues just like themselves, i.e. their ideological clones, out into mainstream society where they will be insidiously spreading their warped values to all and sundry. Thankfully people like Jordan B Peterson and Ben Shapiro are working hard to reverse the trend, to provide an antidote by reasoned intellectual debate, but they won't stop some gullible people sucking it up like a sponge.

    Universities, as centres of higher learning, should always, not just allow, but encourage a multiplicity of views to be examined and debated. I like when Lindsay Shepherd said I want to teach the students HOW to think, not what to think. I'm sympathetic to the LGBTQ community, but when they stifle debate, insist that their views not be questioned, and generally act like neo-fascists on campus, then something has gone awry.

      Lilith Physics teaching is more about practical quantitative problem solving that you'll be able to apply in the real world. Ptolemaic cosmology would be a waste of time to most physics students because they have bridges to build, satellites to launch, and computers to design. That's precisely my point. When an idea is wrong or irrelevant, you don't present it as equal to an idea that is correct; you present it as wrong or, better yet, ignore it if you can. As for real counterarguments to LGBT identity politics, they are overshadowed by stupidity surrounding pronouns and bathrooms.

      Guy Souriandt who gets to decide what is "the garbage that has been disproved"? If there are people that are buying in to it then we absolutely must be encouraging open and fruitful discourse so that misconceptions can be evaluated in the light of rationality. It is this out of hand, dismissive attitude of the left that fuels folks like your new friend Lone Wolf (whom I suspect is a Russian troll tbh). All of these topics that are so often sneered at by "those that know best" need to be made safe to be discussed with out acrimony or derision. The factions of our society need to realize once again that we are all part of the same family and learn how to have healthy and productive discourse once again. We need to stop talking at each other and start talking with each other once again.

      It think the scalpel needs to be wielded carefully. Certainly there's been bloat in administrators. Several of the humanities departments - most anything calling itself 'studies'- have become fortresses of toxicity. Too many professors think it's their role to be social activists on the public purse and radicalise young minds.
      That being said, there are many fine professors who genuinely care and want their students to thrive. I think imprecise cuts would be used by the ideologically driven to purge the good and sane ones. Unis would be even worse off.
      Rather than look solely at diversity of skin colour, gender identity, and sexual orientation, every humanities department ought to be mandated to have diversity of opinion. And any professors advocating suppression of speech liberties ought to be cautioned and, if they persist, tossed.

      TheWolfsan - I've got a PhD in Chemical Engineering obtained in the Dark Ages of the 1980s. Hard sciences, math, engineering, programming are particularly amenable to being taught via MOOC and other computer aided techniques. In addition, since there can be fairly direct connection between the benefits of this education and its application, governmental funding of this could be eliminated, with a modest adjustment to labor laws regarding indentured servitude. I don't know about Canada, but in the USA the government uses this technique via programs like ROTC. Currently, this wouldn't work for private companies, and in any case it is pushed out of the marketplace by government subsidizes to undergraduate education. When getting my Masters degree and PhD, the cost of my education was financed via research grants. Cut out funding and cut out immigration and you will end up getting the right amount of tertiary education in Canada.

      Guy Souriandt - good point. How much of the course work falls into this type of teaching in a modern undergraduate curriculum? Back when I was in school, I had labs a couple of hours a week for chemistry, physics, unit operations. It was about 20% of the time I think. There is probably a greater research component in most schools now, than when I was in this.

    Edit: if Lindsay Shepherd is right, and it's a "clique-y faculty," the whole faculty needs to be fired outright. If that means shutting down entire departments, shut them down as a warning to any other publicly funded institution to dare violate anyone's human rights. You do not have the right to "not be offended." You do not have the right to education. These are privileges. The right to speak ones mind freely is not a privilege. It is a right. It is something you have unless you are oppressed. If you are completely alone, there's no one there to educate you or protect you in any way, but there's also no one there to oppress you and tell you what you can and can not say. That is why the right to free speech trumps all these privileges that Social Justice Warriors declare to be "rights". Calling something a rights doesn't make it a right.
    Rambukkana and Pimlott should both be fired immediately. As for Adria Joel, the puppet master and head bully leading this abuse, should be criminally charged for her abuse of power and abuse of those under her care and charge. WLU should be the subject of a Federal Criminal Investigation. It is publicly funded, and therefore, WLU and ALL publicly funded institutions MUST be held to account PUBLICLY! Deborah Maclatchy should not be allowed to keep ANY reports on ANY investigations into this matter from the public.

    Here are my problems with with this: 1. Peterson's views have nothing to do with transphobia, hatred or violence. He simply says, in a free society people shouldn't be forced to use certain words on the basis of not using them would hurt the feelings of certain groups. That's just nonsense, and even Lindsay Shepherd seems to be on the fence in this issue. 2. The university seems to put the emphasis on "well, there were no complaints, so the meeting shouldn't have even taken place". Well, what if there was a complaint? What if there was a left-wing activist sitting in Shepherd's class, and they did file a complaint against her, because they felt like they were harrassed? Would then all this inquisition be justified?

    • @soulscanner66
      @soulscanner66 6 лет назад

      To be accurate, Shepherd is on the record as disagreeing entirely with Peterson. If you listen to the whole audio of her meeting with her supervisor, she makes that ;point emphatically, In fact, she was teaching that "they" is a grammatically correct way of replacing "she" or "he" in academic writing. She showed the video as an interesting way of illustrating that the issue is controversial. I don' think an LGBT person would have complained. I think she may have been more likely to be harassed by Peterson supporters given her positioning in class. They tend to mock Sheppard's stand with all sort of aggressive name-calling.

    "The University earns a D for its policies. There isn't a clearly stated commitment to free speech. The university has an anti-disruption policy which prohibits students (and other people) from blocking, obstructing, disrupting or interrupting speech (e.g. events, displays) on campus. The University has at least one speech code. The university provides funding and other resources to groups, departments, committees, commissions or other bodies that engage in ideological advocacy. The University earns an F for its practices.
