Here's the original/RAW footage: dcra.in/MavicAir2-8KFootage
Here's a detailed look into the DJI Mavic Air 2 new 8K Hyperlapse mode. I go step by step through the process of creating an 8K Hyperlapse (in course/route mode), and then I show real footage from the 8K Hyperlapse. After which I explain some of the challenges and analyze exactly how well it compares to other footage the Mavic Air 2 can create, including 4K and 1080p footage, as well as the new 48MP photo mode.

You've been killin' it in these videos man.. keep up the great work!!
Thanks, appreciate it!!!
DJI should include 4k option on hyperlapse on the air 2 firmware update. It will make the processing much easier to handle and maybe, can produce better quality thank 8k
Yup, I agree! ☝️
100% agree!
I think it's just a marketing thing to say it makes 8k hyperlapses, while the most people don't want that.
@Richard Mercer probably(most definitely) because dji wanted to brag about 8k... but it kinda sucks
@@RedpillPortugal yeah but even then, they couldve just given a 1080p and 4k mode and still leave the 8k mode... it does not make sense in any way
well done presentation! Now I won't be so confused or disappointed when I try the 8k hyperlapse.
I think it's jumpy because of the interval and because it's flying (kinda) close to the trees / ground, so the jumping can be easily noticed.
I think the 8k was made to take hyperlapses where the subject is maybe more distant, like a mountain or something, so the jumping wouldn't be so noticeable...
Indeed, flying lower can make Hyperlapses tricky - but as noted (and shown), the 1080p ones at the exact same height weren't an issue. It's *all* about the 6-second recording rate.
@@Dcrainmaker Well no shit sherlock. This is why in video fps is king. 6s per frame is 10 fpm, whereas 2s per frame is 30 fpm.. its a neat feature, but id just record at 60 fps @ 4k and fucking forget about it.
At 8k you should have enough room to zoom in, align each frame in post to make it smooth as butter.
This video definitely helped me out! I'm excited to try this feature out on my Mavic Air 2! Thank you!
One thing I've learned over two years of learning about hyperlapses, is that if it's higher than 4k, you don't reject it, you stabilize it in AE.
I'm not defending DJI over their unpolished hyperlapse option, I'm just saying that 8k is well worth for hyperlapses, and those, even though they should came SOC just fine, are workable lapses!
Thank you very much for this analysis! Great job! And thanks even more for the possibility to watch the original files!
Great, detailed information. Thanks!
What a brilliant test! Was very helpful!!
Thanks, appreciate it!
As always, great review DC ! Thanks 😊
Thanks, appreciate it!
This is going to be amazing!! Never done hyperspace before with Mavic mini. So looking forward to getting mavic
air 2
Got mine. Can’t wait to try it
great analysis. Good explanations for your points.
I keep watching these reviews because I really like this little drone 😀
Great video! Great information! Thanks! I got the Air 2 on the way!
It's on my wish list but waiting for some more reviews like this. Well done/good explanation.
Thanks!!!
Weather is looking good over there Ray! Oh great video as always 👍
Thanks! Indeed, we've been super lucky on weather the last 2 months. Pretty unreal!
@@Dcrainmaker - I would have been just as happy with 6k hyperlapse that is usable vs 8k unusable. They could probably use that little bit of extra real-estate to stabilize footage. 🙄
@@mlegrand Agree, or heck, even a 4K HyperLapse. I don't understand why they went with 1080p as the only other option. :-/
Outstanding instructional video. Thanks.
Thanks!!!
Awesome video 🙌🏽 keep it up 👍
The nice Dutch scenery
Thanks for the video!
Great video!! Incredibly to the point and informative
Thanks, much appreciated!
You bring up some good points that no one has talked about yet. Digging your videos
Thanks! I try and dig in a bit deeper to find the nuggets (both good and bad).
Hi DC Rainmaker, i was wondering, did you use tripod mode when you shoot the hyperlapse.
I like your videos, thanks for your great work!
Great work
Great Video!
I dont have an Air 2 (yet) but regarding the differences in exposures between the 4K video and 8K Hyperlapse....maybe the HDR option is not available when in 8K Hyperlapse mode?
By chance does the Maverick air 2 pick up sound when recording or are you issuing something separate to Record your voice with?! just because when I start filming my flights what I should use for sound to record my voice with !!
Your ability to explain and test gadgets is superb! something I rarely find on youtube. I really enjoyed the DJI Mavic Air 2 wind test, DJI Mavic Air 2 active track test, and this DJI Mavic Air 2 HyperLapse video. Same gadget, different insight, or findings. Worth Subscribing!!
Thanks, appreciate it!!!

Great video, makes me wanna upgrade my mavic mini
I'm just getting into this hobby. Great demonstration! Thanks!
Thanks! Enjoy the journey!
Came in to find out where the option was to change it to 8k and stayed for the whole thing and subscribed.
Thanks!
I enjoy your flailing hand movements
Great video !!! What video options are available for circle and course lock?
Question: at 1:23 there is the option "shot frame", does this enable you to retrieve each single shot and stitch it perfectly in sync via software afterwards??!
Thanks for the tech info.
I keep learning new things my Air 2 can do 😅 interesting video
Awesome job 🙂 Thorough.
Super comprehensive review! KeeP up the good work! Can you do a comparison between mavic air 2 and mavic 2 pro with regards to stills?
i have a question do you recommend this for your first drone ?
Showing love to another awesome Thinkpad user!
Great! I am so glad you are not only reviewing smart fitness gadgets but also drones. I love both. I used to have Garmin Fenix 5X Plus and I switched to Polar Vantage V Titan after watching your video review. Now, I am considering getting Mavic Air 2. Your videos are awesome! Keep up the great work!
Thanks!!!
Have you tried reel steady? Is super for those bumpy videos. Cheers!! Pretty good content. Keep going.
pretty sure that exposure in 8k can be fixed in a software update, or have them just save the 8k photos as a sequence so you can process it yourself?
Can we just save individual photos and stitch them together later using desktop software?
Can't you return it in sport mode to the aproximatly starting point of the hyperlpase before starting the recording to save the slow return time?
Good video, as usual. I like the fact, that although this is of course a DJI sponsored vid (normal people don't have the Mavic Air 2 yet), you are not afraid to highlight design flaws (like on the follow-mode vid). This channel is one of the rare sources of information to trust before vids of real users, who actually paid for the product, are out.
Great explanation! I always curious as to what all the fuss is about this hyperlapse hype....Netherlands is so beautiful...
Thanks!
Would it appear smoother if a longer distance was chosen?
Very comprehensive. Good video. I had to put playback speed at .75 so I could absorb all the words.
Thanks for this was helpful informative post.
Thanks!!!
I picked up the MA2 and I am quite impressed, especially with tracking. Thanks for your great explanation. That scenery where you live looks fantastic! Keep it up. Subscribed!
Do you think you'd see the same shaky issues if you flew it higher but kept the same FOV inclination? I wonder if it'd at least look more stable.
Nice video, it would be cool if you could find a way to stabilize those hyperlapse footage. Cheers
Great video! Subscribed...
That jumping is really off putting. Great video. Considering selling my Mavic Pro for one but also put off by having no CE marking yet and no air sense in Europe.
Yeah, the lack of Air Sense is a bummer in Europe. :( The Mavic Air 2 is still an incredible drone, just not this one feature.
wait for the mavic 3 and then decide
Personally I'd specifically avoid the AirSense for flying in Germany since it puts a hard cap at altitude when flying in Berlin at 100m and other really crazy limits.
Use premier pro warp stabilizer or after effects to make your 8k hyper lapse into an epic 4K hyperlapse
Could the jumping up and down be due to the fact you were over water? Could the bottom sensor be adjusting up and down due to the motion of the water ?
Does the hyperlapse image quality improve if you turn off APAS?
MOV is less compressed than MP4 so if you want image quality then that's what you should record in. It would be interesting to see the difference, probably won't be massive but it will eak out everything available give you greater post flexibility.
Hi ... great video, thanks for making those. I loved your high-wind test - really turning point for me to actually get an AIR 2 in addition to my Mini.
Regarding this video, I am wondering is the exposure difference due to lack of HDR? The time lapse videos appear to me as if they are not HDR. I don't know if the 8k time-lapse pictures have HDR into them. I know that 4k videos only support 30 FPS for HDR mode. If you do 4k 60 - you don't get HDR. I imagine that 4k60 is the limit and every other frame is different exposure for HDR support.
Should perhaps compare 4k60 with 8k time lapse for exposure difference in high dynamic scenes. And if you happen to re-test this - should probable try high altitude scene without any shadows - just to eliminate HDR from the comparisson.
Hi, which microsd do you use in the mavic? Thanks
Can't you lock the exposure or go into manual during the HyperLapse? I would think that it would help if you found your subject beforehand and locked it in auto or went to manual and then found a happy medium between the darkest and lightest points in your HyperLapse. Or are those options not available in HyperLapse.
Great video, just one question: can you have the drone save all individual images (ideally in RAW) or are you stuck with just getting the final video? Also, is it possible to save your waypoints for reuse? I saw some DJI representant say that it was but I didn't see it in your video.
no it seems there is no option to save every single image like in de mavic 2 pro. hopfully this will be possible in the future.
hey nice info, thanks!
Hi Ray. I have a question about the NFZ software. Does it work here in the Netherlands? Is it very conservative? Is it possible to override it? Thanks
Do you think they will give a 4K hyperlapse mode in the future?
8K is probably great if you are far up in the sky, 100 meter up in the sky or so.
Great video, I still want to buy one.
Just ordered this drone !
Great testing. And not sure I really need an 8k hyper-lapse anyways.
Wow superb video. Thank you. Where is the location?
Forgive me for my ignorance but is it possible to do a timelaspe and have the raw still files rather then the hyperlaspe
you had me on the DOT DOT DOT.....😆... awesome tutorial...✌
Excellent video.
Have you done any testing on the new update for hyperlaps where are you can save the raw files.
I have been unsuccessful in finding any raw files with the new update.
Not quite yet.
Yea I'll wait for the Mavic 3 pro or mavic air 3 in 2022. Thank You for making this You saved me 1K
Can we get access to the photos as single shots?
Excellent, I thought I would be able to get away with a Mavic Mini but I would like some autonomy👍🤠
Thanks for this :) it pains me to say, but this confirms that I need to wait for the Mavic Pro 3. The bigger aircraft, larger sensor and lessons learned from the Mavic Air 2 will make all the difference with the MP3. Cheers.
First of all... thank you! You make really good and informative videos :-) Most of the things DJI has put into this drone is marketing gimmick. There is 3 things that i value the most in this drone. Size (still smal) way better connection and range, and the 4K 60fps
Does the Air 2 allow you to save the original dng files?
If you were to live in the UK like me, would you buy the Mavic Air 2 knowing it does not have the air sense built into the Uk models ?
Thanks for all your hard work and clear explanations!
Seems like the 8K needs a lot of work in post launch firmware for it to be a viable option. 4K on the pro 2 gives a much more professional and smooth output.
The interval of 6 secs is too high of smooth footage I think. But the processors no my quick enough to analyse and write it to the SD card.
Do you have the option to retrieve single raw files?
Are you using SanDisk Ultra SD card with this test?
Would it be possible to take a hyperlapse with just panning the gimbal while the drone just sits on a table like the Osmo?
Informative video! Where can I get that t-shirt?
Great video !
When shooting the hyper laps do you get individual photo files or just a video file.
Just video.
8k play it using phone like iPhone 11 can it play sir?
Absolutly luv yr delivery/presentaion! real Pro! Speaking of PRO , i am still waiting delivery of Drone x Pro. what am I to expect ? really would like yr input
Nice video. I wonder if the jumping up and down etc has to do with the drone being so small and light?
Nope, pretty common in the bigger drones too.
Can you shoot long exposures in hyperlapse mode? Anyone know?
Dang was hoping that it would be better, but they have achieved a lot with this small drone! Firmware updates will hopefully fix somethings.
For all you confused people, this hyperlapse mode is exactly like in the Mavic 2 and just like in the mavic 2 you can just save the RAW images, don't use the unstabilized video generated by the app and edit&stabilize the footage in post - that's how all the pros get smooth hyperlapse footage from a drone.
Chill Flights For Fun do you have confirmation you can save Raws with it? It doesn’t use the same app as the Pro 2. I only shoot raw Hyperlapse with my Pro 2.
@@birdymeo yah you can save RAW+JPEG
Thanks JJB. I think this tutorial is "JimDandy". Helped me a lot.
Do you think its worth about 400 USD more from the Mavic Mini? Would be an awesome addon video to a comparison of the Air 2 vs Mini! Lastly, just wondering, if the Mavic Mini(without registering) would have any advantages in places you can fly as compared to where you cannot fly other Mavic drones above 250 grams. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you!
Honestly the most informative, useful and groundbreaking MA2 video to date. Thanks for exposing the flaw in the 8k hyper lapsing. This certainly wasn't on the highlight. reel for DJI. It sounds like they might be able to fix it with a software update. As you said. Go pro and other companies can do it
Thanks, appreciate it!
Great job. I really think you got it figured out. So question. If we turn off all sensors can we make video and pictures better!!??
Haha...I wish! Unfortunately I don’t think they’re giving us that flexibility to control the imaging pipeline! I wish there was some middle ground though, like a 4K option.
@@Dcrainmaker you should be able to turn off front/back and side collision avoidance in the general settings, and see if maybe that makes a difference in the image quality. Definitely worth a try if so much of the image processing pipeline is taken by APAS...
I agree that subsequent FW will address the crappy 8k HL. My question is...Can you select/change various exposure setting and more importantly...shutter speed??
Wooooww... dji mavic is really good 😊👏👏👏👏👏
hopefully there will be an update. i prefer single raw images for more control in post! like in the m2pro.
