Two bicyclists are run down by a strange black car in the desert near a small town in Utah. But this is just the first in a series of hit-and-run murders. Sheriff Wade Parents (James Brolin) is called in to investigate, and his deputy, Everett (John Marley), is killed by the black sedan, which, some witnesses say, has no one behind its wheel. The car being unable to enter the cemetery because it is hallowed ground is a very good detail, considering what the car is.
Yeah, excellent detail.😎
The car itself was designed by George Barris using a Lincoln continental mk 3 ...The evil, black car in the film was a highly customized 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III designed by famed Hollywood car customizer George Barris. There were four cars built for the film in six weeks. Three were used as stunt mules, the fourth for closeups. The stunt mules were destroyed during production, while the fourth is now in a private collection.
The car's bodywork was painted in steel, pearl and charcoal coloring. The windows were laminated in two different shades, smoked on the inside and amber on the outside, so one could see out of it but not into it. In order to give "the car" a "sinister" look as requested by director Elliot Silverstein, Barris made the car's roof three inches lower than usual and altered its side fenders that same length again both higher and longer. According to Silverstein, the distinctive sound the horn of The Car makes spells out the letter X in Morse code.
Did you think garlic would make any difference or may silver bullets?
Wonder what would happened if you tricked it into a car wash and then clean it with holy water. 👀
@@EonityLuna very good one
I like how the car was backing up slightly and moving forward as if it was gasping at her insults or doing donuts because it was pissed.
@a user that eats chips sideways I did also, I think the sweet thing remark really pissed it off more than her throwing the stick at it, you could see the angry look it displayed when it looked at her.
Cursed Haunted Car, ❌❌❌
What was not shown was when the car hit the gate it made the ground shake but my most favorite scene was that guy playing the French horn hitch hiking insulted the car got it pissed off and it backed up over him and drove forward just to make sure lol 😆 or how about in the beginning when the first two bicyclists got nailed and tumbled down the mountain but I will tell yall I want that car I love Lincolnshire mark 3s
The car was like “The Audacity!” 😄
The car went like, 😤😭, frustrated.
This movie did a good job actually giving the car a personality. Like when it starts doing donuts you know it's pissed and is throwing a tantrum.
Or its toying with them we see it mess with people before it kills them.
@@metromadness2016 If I remember correctly, the movie establishes that 'The Car' can't enter cemeteries, so she's taunting it from safe ground, so to speak.
@@MelancoliaI Yeah, Evil can't enter Hallowed Ground.
@MelancoliaI yes but she didn't know that it couldn't enter a Cemetery
@@MelancoliaI She was better off at the cemetery than her own home.
The actress did a great job trying to be brave and standing up to the car but being shaky /scared at the same time, stuttering nervously. Good acting!
Agreed! Great acting.
Yea, and then skip to somewhere in the movie where she dies
@@williamvasilakis9619 She's A Legend
Yeah she did but it was her biggest mistake to mess with that car for what she say and cotton her self killed 😮😮😮
@@audreyfoster2404 To be honest I'm still surprised they killed off the female lead! She was really likeable, it was quite an unusual twist killing her off.
I love the design of the car. The shining black paint-job, the thin, low-down windows, the thick doors with no handles, the odd design of the headlights and the alien-like sound of its engine all give it this otherworldly feel to it, like it's something inhuman poorly pretending to be human. Helps it fall right into the uncanny valley
It's actually blue it's just so dark it makes people think that it's black
Same man. Always watched the movie for the vehicle itself. It's a Lincoln continental mark iii town car suped up by Barris Kustoms (same people who did the OG Batmobile) The main guy said "The Car" was actually one of his least favorite designs that he's done. Always imagined the interior being like early 1910s old and just covered in dust/sand, couch like seats.
@@wickeywaanzla3015 and the munsters cars too, and the family truckster. George Barris was an artist who could make a car perfect for a movie or show’s general feel.

That car deserves an Oscar ...
Absolutely
It would have been hear that as it accepted the award lol!
OsCAR. I get it.
I wanna hear an Oscar speech from that car.
Well, the stunt driver sure does.
Love how NOBODY understood that the car had NO driver...it was merely a shape for something not of this world.
well im not sure because im not sure if this is the same movie because i remember having a conversation with someone years ago and he said there was a movie about a killer car which had tinted windows so you couldnt see anyone in it but he said you could tell someone was driving it because a hand popped out of the car to grab someone not sure if this is that same movie
@@sexydudeuk2172 i think you're referring to that other haunted car movie with a yellow '71 dodge charger that had a modified front end, I don't remember the name of the movie

I like how the car and her are mirrored in a way, she taunts the driver for only feeling powerful behind the wheel, inside the car, while at the same time she's bold and brash because she knows she's safe behind the boundary of the cemetery and won't step foot outside.
Funny, that once she thinks she's safe back at home the car does her in big time.
@@Billy-bc8pk Your home may be your castle, but it won't save you!
Never mouth off at a driverless car.
This has to be one of the best classic horror films of 70s, Brolin also did a great job in Amityville horror.
Hm. I don't know. Its an exploitation flick with a unique concept. Entertaining. But I wouldn't go much further than that.

Man the sound of that damn engine is serious, I remembered watching this movie as a kid with my mom and I never appreciated the sound, but as a 51 ur old.....I love it.
Sounds a lot like a NASCAR engine under the hood!
I believe that this car was inspiration for the werecar in the cartoon futurama.
Robert Dee's, the car was also an inspiration for KITT's evil twin KARR, as a matter of fact, if you see the ending of S1 of Knight Rider's episode of Trust Doesn't Rust, instead of KARR goes off the cliff, The Car itself goes off the cliff.

Literally
I love how the car literally toots it's own horn when it makes a kill
In case you hadn't noticed, it honks the same way after each kill: it's Morse code for the letter "X".
I saw a story about a week ago, a guy showed up at a car show with either the original Car or a perfect reproduction. The condition was so good id tend to believe it to be the latter, but the article didn't say.
Legend had it that the Car was really destroyed in the making of the film.
There were actually 3 built and 1 gotten damage during filming
One is said to be overseas somewhere. It was said in one of the commentaries.
@@nytewrtr It was presumably auctioned off to a European collector back in 1983, no one's seen it since though.
I believe the original designer still has one version of The Car.
I hope you were smart enough to tell it how beautiful it still looks after all these years. If not, cultivate a healthy paranoia.
How couldn't they see that the car wasn't a normal car with the weird, demonic type of sounds it made lol
I remember at one point there was a report thay came into the sheriff's office that someone had heard a car with what sounded like "open pipes". I found it cool that people were hearing it, even if they didn't see it. (Generally seeing it meant it could see you, which was not a good thing for your health)
Still today, almost 50 years later, that car still looks very creepy.
I can't see that 'possessed' car as anything other than a bulky, oversized gas-guzzler that looks more laughable than 'chilling'.

As it had been established that the murderous car couldn't enter the cemetery, why didn't everybody just stay in there until the thing was dispatched?
No one knew it at this time, they only doped it our later.

This scene is so good but it was much longer in the movies. Lauren got the kids involved and they all started teasing the car and making chicken noises thats why he freaked out and got so mad he started doing donuts.
They were trying to buy Margie more time to get help.
They have never released that full cemetery scene on home video.
