I'm pretty sure "Dany kinda forgot about the Iron Fleet" is going to be the new "Jar Jar is the key to all this." Or any one of the other George Lucas quotes when he made the prequels.
And speaking of Star Wars, I think it would've been a great outro in the HT if EVG said "Well, at least I still have Star Wars," then got mad when he found out D&D were helming a new SW trilogy. Or a joke about how even Rian Johnson is taking shots at the last season would've been nice.

Oh, my sweet summer child, what do you know about disappointment? Disappointment is for the short night, when Jon did nothing and Arya fell a hundred feet from nowhere. Disappointment is for the characters, whose arcs are built up for years only to be instantly regressed and plot lines are born and live and die all in nothingness. That is the time for disappointment, my queen, when the White Walkers never make it past Winterfell.
Thousands of years ago, there came lazy writers that destroyed an entire series. Fans raged about no set up, payoff or logic, same as the cast members in their interviews. And parents smothered their Khaleesis rather than see them watch Season 8, and wept and felt the tears of disappointment on their cheeks.
In that darkness, the Show Runners came for the last time. They rushed through season 8 without care, leaving coffee cups and water bottles, riding off to Star Wars to “subvert more expectations”.

(HBO will do it because they want spinoff viewers; the actors will because they want work; the press will do it - eventually - because D&D's future output is under Disney; and viewers will do it because they haven't read, cared about, or understood the books.) When Lon says class is a modern concept, it isn't. If you look at Aristotle's Constitution of the Athenians, there is commentary about the common man and how they were important to the Solonic reforms which would eventually lead to the institution of democracy in the city. Plato also discussed how creating strife between the classes leads to problems in the Republic. In a more contemporaneous period with the show, peasants revolts were something rulers would be cognizant of. Plus there were Enlightened Authoritarianism after the Enlightenment, but even before that there were rulers who held absolute power that cared for the lower class dating back to the Ancient Greeks such as Peisistratus

we get it Lon, you liked it. Nobody is forcing you to dislike it - just to understand why over 50% of the non-casual fanbase of the show felt the conclusion was weak and unsatisfying. It has very little to do with expectations, and it's not just that it was rushed (I'd argue that the blatantly "rushed" vibe is more of a symptom than a cause for the very vocal hate last two seasons got) it has more to do with weak dialogue, boring character arcs, plot armor in service of role popularity and and overall lack of production quality. I think that despite the rabid and exaggerated nature of our comments the fan base *can* forgive mistakes, but when the whole product feels like one big flaw... well, that's stretching the audience's limits for enjoyment.

I've said this before, so I'll be repeating myself, but Dany going mad is actually a perfect example of what went wrong with the show. Not that she went mad, as I do believe that's where the books are going as well. It's not what happens, it's why and how it happens.
When the Red Wedding happened, no one asked Why? You may not have liked that the Boltons turned against the Starks, and you certainly weren't surprised that the Freys did; you did not like the choice that they made, but you understood why it happened. You were angry, sad, depressed, but you weren't confused.
When Dany goes mad, everyone is asking Why? Why did she do this? It's not enough to be told that she could go mad. You need to see it evolve. The thing is, they had actually already built in how this could have happened and didn't use it.
    1. Dany should have been winning the war. Cersei is not as smart as she thinks she is. She continually makes matters worse for herself because she lacks foresight. Dany should have been given good council by Tyrion with good information by Varys. Cersei should realize that she can't defeat Dany so long as Dany has these two men providing her advice, so she targets Tyrion and Varys. She manages to kill Varys, and therefore remove that source of information, and wounds Tyrion. She also manages to seriously wound one of the smaller dragons, to the point where it can no longer fly. It begins to give up on life, and, unable to force it to feed, Dany has to watch it waste away and die. She is consumed by grief.
    2. Jorah at the Citadel. The healing by Sam seemed far too easy (comparative to the problem). Have Sam start to heal Jorah, and the next thing we see is Sam being reprimanded and punished. Jorah then turns up at Dragonstone. He sits in on her councils, and continually gives her advice that plays to the worst parts of her personality, the part telling her to burn everything, be a dragon. She occasionally laughs at his humor, which no one else seems to find funny. Later you find out why, when Sam meets Jon again and tells him how he met the son of Lord Mormont. He had grey scale. Sam tried to save him and failed: he died. Jorah's not there: Dany's having hallucinations brought on by grief at the loss of her child. We now know that Dany is compromised, even if the characters don't.
    3. Qyburn's cult of murder babies. Dany blockades King's Landing, and Qyburn sends out a bunch of women and children under the guise of refugees who escaped, and want nothing to do with the Lannisters. Dany takes the children in, only for the children to be revealed as assassins who try to kill her in her sleep. She confronts the women, who openly admit they view Dany as a foreign invader and usurper. Dany has them burned alive. At this point she now sees everyone in King's Landing, even the women and children, as potential enemies.
Though she has been winning the war, driving Cersei back, the losses are becoming unbearable. She snaps and attacks the city.

    • @telectronix1368
      @telectronix1368 5 лет назад +10

Imo a much more organic process would have been having Danny, grieving for Missandre and her dragons and her lost troops etc etc and hell-bent on revenge against Cersei decides not to accept peace and instead continues to attack Cersei and the castle itself.
That way you could still have much destruction of the city, innocents bystanders killed and so on......but it would be because Danny has become so focussed on this one goal and one person.
So she'd still be unstable and unsuitable as a calm ruler, Jon and others could still work to stop her taking the throne but she wouldn't have been made into a butcher of innocent families and children.

Those are some clever ways of dealing with it, good work. I also felt if they'd had a scorpion or several hidden in the roof of several of the buildings en route to the castle, and they are revealed as she flys to attack and almost nail her, so she has to turn and destroy them, and gets paranoid over the rest of the city, that might have worked well.

it's not character assassination. no matter what happened or what he did since the beginning of the series, he always went back to Cersei. she was his drug. it made perfect sense for him to go back and try to save her in the end. here is a jamie quote from season 6 episode 1, "Fuck prophecy. Fuck fate. Fuck everyone who isn’t us. We’re the only ones who matter, the only ones in this world. And everything they’ve taken from us, we’re going to take back and more. Not that you even need to be a genius to understand that a good story or arc is more important in art than cynically operating within constraints of probability and reality. Even a small change, like having him kill Cersei would be OK, because it would show some progress. He didn't have to be completely redeemed and save the world.

It makes sense from a storytelling perspective, its just unusual storytelling. Stories tend to take the road where characters do achieve their storyarc, or the storyarc that we want them to succeed at. But GoT never was that kind of story. Characters in the past had often failed to complete their arc, or rather their arc was never meant to be completed and was part of another arc. George RR Martin tends to go for a more realistic approach with his storytelling, more based in history and human nature. And Jaimie had a toxic relationship with Cersei that lasted for most of his life, it was always build into his character that he good relapse, and a situation where you have kinda achieved that change, is a perfect situation to relapse, because its new, its scary, and the past feels more comfortable and safe in that regard in contrast.
Also, the BIGGEST Problem that Jaimies story has towards the end, is that it was meant for books, where we are directly in Jaimies head, which needs to be adapted usually into some dialogue, which needs to make sense in the situation and needs reason to happen. That is not always possible, and the final season of GoT suffers at quite a few points from that. Another example would be Jon after the City gets burned. Not being directly in his head, with his inner monologue or inner dialogue, is a general problem. And the Dialogue with Tyrion was the way they tried to adapt that to the show, with the inbuild problem, that Jon is left with one side of inner dialogue, and Tyrion represents the more reasonable side, which made Jon look a bit stupid in that situation. With Jaimie however, there was no good way to really bring the inner conflict out in that kind of way, best they could do is what he said in his parting words with Brienne, which comes a bit out of nowhere in the show, but is not a problem at all in the books.

I think that's what the uproar was about. One key change in GoT was something George RR Martin pointed out in Entertainment Weekly when talking about the successor show: "As you know for Game of Thrones, we never even nominated anybody for lead actress or lead actor [during awards season] until recently; it was always for supporting [categories] because the show is such an ensemble."
When GoT decided it no longer wanted to be an ensemble is when they messed up in my opinion. The show was at its very best when it was an ensemble show without lead actors. To me, the show runners didn't know what made their show great, so after they ran out of books they moved the show into the wrong direction as a result of it.

Was Daenerys evil? Was Tywin Lannister? Stannis Baratheon? Olenna Tyrell? Roose Bolton? Theon Greyjoy? No. Or rather, its entirely subjective, and, rather complex.
The entire point of Game of Thrones was to point out the futility and Hell that is war. One of the ways it accomplished this was by it’s realistic depictions of character. The Game of Thrones characters are morally complex. Character being seen as virtuous, good, and heroic or cruel, evil, and treacherous depends on one’s point of view. The first novel, A Game of Thrones, is a very Stark-centric book with all characters POV’s ring a Stark (or Jon, a Snow) save two- Daenerys and Tyrion. As the Starks are demonstrably noble and honorable and good, when they find themselves opposed to the Lannisters, who, from their perspective, (to varying degrees- Jon and Tyrion get along for example) come across as treacherous and ambitious and corrupt and cruel, it’d be easy as a reader to see them as “the bad guys”…save for the perspectives where we see Tyrion, reading his inner thoughts, is not a bad person, and, by proxy, we get conflicting opinions or perspectives of other characters we view for good or ill. While a useful method to advance the story, it was also a method meant to challenge readers to caution the reliability of the way events unfold or are witnessed. For example, Jaime was clearly a villain, until we got inside his head in his POV chapters in A Storm of Swords…then we saw he’s actually a noble man. Realizing this makes us re-examine our earlier preconceptions of characters like Ned Stark, for example.
The show, however, is a different medium, and must impart it’s lessons in a different way. We don't get characters inner thoughts, so their motivations are ambiguous. We see events unfold, rather than hear about them from within another characters POV. As such, things are often bit more straightforward. As such, Daenerys actions in the earlier seasons as she acquired more and more power, given she was presented as a protagonist and a seemingly good person, it led to many viewers empathizing, identifying with, or idolizing her. Therefore, it was easy to overlook her atrocities as heroic rather than barbaric, her actions as empowering rather than fascistic, and because we were “with her” perspective, it allowed us as viewers to vilify, or dehumanize her victims as “evil” to justify what she does. We see Daenerys rationalization. She feels she’s liberating cities, freeing slaves and empowering the downtrodden. Because she believes this, she conducts herself as a virtuous person, and it can be easy, as a viewer, to see her as actually being one.
And that was the point. Viewers were meant to “root” for Daenerys. Her raving threats of bringing fire and blood, and destroying whole cities were presented as bold and heroic, an under dog declaring her intentions, “calling her shot” with the backdrop of a powerful moving score as she states them. We see Grey Worm and Missandei’s appreciation for being freed and treated with dignity, and we see the blind devotion of Jorah. That Grey Worm is a mal-conditioned drone stormtrooper, and Jorah a former slaver is easily overlooked because they serve Daenerys so loyally, and she’s “good” right? Sneaking into city in disguise and taking it by guile? That’s not treacherous, it’s bold! She executed innocent, even morally good people when she indiscriminately crucified hundreds of masters? Well, cut her a break, they had committed the atrocity of crucifying slave children. Sure, she messed up, but, they deserved it, right? Burning men alive in a premeditated fashion? Well, they were rapists and savages, men looking to dominate her as a woman. So, that was empowering and righteous! A building consumed in fire with dozens of dead inside was presented as an epic and powerful moment, rather than a horrifying one. We were, through trick of depiction and score, meant to root for Daenerys. And why? So that when she “turned evil” it would be like a kick in the balls- utterly overwhelming.
When Daenerys “snaps” (and lets be honest, she didn’t go crazy….she just rationalized her decision to employ terror), suddenly, the perspective changes, and we’re presented from the point of view of the citizens under attack. We’re no longer “with her”, her and her troops actions being “ours”, and therefore, something we want and root for and celebrate…no, we’re on the other end for a change. Her actions are terrifying. They’re barbaric and savage. Merciless and cruel. Insane. In a word, evil. All because our perspective changed.
The show held a mirror up, and we recoiled in revulsion at what we saw. Why were we so disturbed? I mean, we rooted for Daenerys for years! It was awesome. Epic. Fun.
    Until it wasn't.
Until they reminded us war is Hell.
So is Daenerys evil? Depends on who you ask. Grey Worm? She’s a hero and liberator to him. The Dothraki? An icon, Blood of their Blood. To the show cobbler on Gin Alley, who lost his wife, two sons, daughter, dog, home, business, sept, and was sadly burned and lost an arm? She’s a monster. A tyrant. Evil.
    And that’s the point.
No, Daenerys is not evil. Like Tywin or Stannis or Cersei, she's a complex character, capable of great good and great evil. She’s human. She’s any one of us." -someone on Quora

The only way Danni's heel turn would work is if from episode one, they showed that she has an ego and that she puts it before ideals.
Also you think the Lord of Light bringing John Snow back, the two of them would be more involved killing the Night King...

So...you think it would have only worked if Dany had been a one-dimensional character that never changed from Season 1? That makes no sense.

No I think he's saying the change they gave her didn't correspond to the change (or character development) she had undergone from Season 1 to Season 7 prior to o turning "Mad Queen".
In other words, the character development she underwent from season one seems to suggest that she WOULDN'T turn Mad Queen and would instead find reasons to NOT burn all those innocent people despite the clumsy way they tried to set it up and justify it with Jorah and Missandei's death and a failing relationship with Jon.

Cbricklyne You are correct. Vince MacMann wouldn't have done a heel turn that out of nowhere!

I'll give Lon credit for being the only one at that table that really liked season 8. Great Commentary as usual.

GOT was never in my Top 5 after season 7. I still had hopes, but David and Benioff (Dumb & Dumber) killed everything good about the show by the finale.
Anyone who wants a great finale and a mindblowing show from start to finish must watch Jonathan Nolan's Person of Interest. One of the Top 5 TV shows in the world, period.

Daredevil (Netflix) deserves an honest trailer. It is frigging perfect.

The idea that anyone thought S8 was "perfectly fine" is insane. No character was acting like their character, they were fast-travelling everywhere, nothing mattered . . . it was such a mangled mess that it could barely be called a television show.
