The main thing I appreciate about this car in 2023 is that you can actually go to a dealership and just buy one, no waiting list or anything. There are even multiple colors and trims on the lot to compare and maybe even test drive, and on Nissan dealers' websites they have actual prices, not "Contact Dealer for Price." Fleet vehicles! B2B sales and leases are comfortable in their margins and volume, so they can continue to put the Altima out there and have it be a more compelling rental car from the rental company's perspective.
A Nissan salesperson dream is someone coming in and buying a nicely optioned car and financing it in-house with a decent down payment. There isn't much demand, but then you sometimes find people who want a new car and need it quickly and go with the dealership easiest to sign papers with. Nissan. They'll get you a car.

I drove a 2022 Nissan Altima rental car and I was surprised at how much I liked it. The seats are so comfortable. The base engine had ample power. The interior has a nice, quality feel to it. The interior space is very roomy, even the back seats. And I loved the large trunk. And it got great gas mileage in the time I had it.

I traded my 2016 Altima in for a 2016 Audi A6 a year ago but I have no doubt I would have got 200k on the Altima. Maintenance is key on the CVT's, heat is the #1 killer of them. Fluid starts to break down and causes all kinds of issues. Buy an after market oil cooler and change the CVT fluid every 30k and it will last. I drove mine from OH to VA every couple months and it did great. Personally I was changing my CVT fluid once/yr but I am OCD and drive 20k+ a year. Great transmissions if you take care of them and don't drive them beyond their intended use.

Again as an Automotive Technician I can tell you that misfires, fishbite misfires and driveability concerns will likely be more difficult. But something tells me that this engine will work mostly trouble free up to a certain mileage. And the vehicle total value will likely be less than its worth to fix the engine. Oil changes......oil changes will likely be even more imperative. It stands to reason that the more complex a system the higher the rate of failure. Hopefully I won't be working in these things. By the time they start failing I'll be retired. I think more and more cars are made with planned obsolescence. Although many will last far more than 100k miles. Once you get to that point they break consistently until it's worth almost nothing. And parts supply is already an issue. So we'll see.

Memes aside I can tell you as a valet the Altima is actually practical, comfortable, and a good daily driver. I'm tall and have back problems and the Altima is way more comfortable than the Corolla (which to me is a deal breaker for the Toyota). Can't speak for long term reliability i've driven many of them with 200k+ miles and the owners said they have never replaced the trans or engine they just do preventative maintenance as normal.
Many of the owners do perpetuate the memes though lol.

The fact is there just as many Toyota Corollas and other car make and models that have crappy drivers behind the wheel that are riding around beat up with bumpers hanging off and missing hubcaps. For some reason Altimas get all the crap currently, but before that the Impala wore the crown.
