    On November 28, 1979, an Air New Zealand DC10 crashed into the slopes of Mt Erebus in Antarctica, killing all 257 people on board. But who was really at fault, the pilot or the government-owned airline?
    On the 40th anniversary of the tragedy, presenter Garry McAlpine and writer/director John Keir interview the key players in a quest to discover the truth. They talk to the family of Jim Collins, the pilot who was initially blamed for the accident. For the first time we hear from an American pilot who tried in vain to send a warning to the doomed flight.

    Gemmell’s body language and distain of the questions made it easy for Mahon. Then when he made his only mistake falling for a standard ploy from an experienced judge like Mahon was the ultimate demonstration. “It was known at Air New Zealand of the change of coordinates” Not a straight answer but a question FROM Gemmell, where did you get that? The rest is copybook Yes Minister! “I cannot recollect etc”.

      Did the coordinates programmed by air nz send the plane straight into the mountain?

      A simple answer when you accept that there were no MSAs thought up under VFR, yes. The crew had been briefed that the AINS was aiming TE901 at the middle of the entry to McMurdo Sound, a target that was 40 miles wide. Had Collins, Cassin, Simpson, Irvine and Gabriel been briefed at the RCU that the flight path WAS over Erebus? Simpson, Irvine and Gabriel gave evidence that like all the 1978 and 1979 briefings were that the FP was down the middle of the Sound. Wilson and Johnson lied to Mahon when they said that the FP was overhead Erebus. The USNavy had copies of the earlier pre 28/11/79 flight plans. Again they all showed middle of the Sound FP. The MSAs were dreamed up as the only way to avoid massive payouts. You do not change a flight plan without a Notam, even for just a 2 miles change.
