  • Erebus Flight 901: Litany of Lies? Episode 2
On November 28, 1979, an Air New Zealand DC10 crashed into the slopes of Mt Erebus in Antarctica, killing all 257 people on board. But who was really at fault, the pilot or the government-owned airline?
On the 40th anniversary of the tragedy, presenter Garry McAlpine and writer/director John Keir interview the key players in a quest to discover the truth. They talk to the family of Jim Collins, the pilot who was initially blamed for the accident. For the first time we hear from an American pilot who tried in vain to send a warning to the doomed flight.

Is it possible that anyone survived the crash, albeit with severe life threatening injuries and they only survived a few hours?

You've been on several Erebus videos claiming this. So I have a question for you - how would they have tracked their position, if on the flight plan itself the coordinates are not correct? You claim to be a pilot, do you spend your time on the cockpit looking DOWN into the cockpit often? Remember, they're not flying modern jets with LCD screens featuring all the waypoints on screen for easy tracking. And no doubt if Captain Collins was to pull out the chart he had brought with him, it wouldn't have reflected the changed coordinates because he had plotted the original coordinates that was briefed to him.
The fact of the matter is, Captain Collins was expecting to fly down the McMurdo Sound. The view outside the window affirms his view, thanks to the sector whiteout. All the odds were stacked up against him. And please don't argue about him going down below the MSA which, given all the evidence of past flights and the testimony given at the Inquiry, sounds to have been non-existent or not briefed to the pilot.
Honestly, do you see any logic of routing the aircraft on top of Erebus, an active volcano? I mean, where's the logic in Air New Zealand NOT using the same route the USAF took for their C-141s coming into McMurdo?
