love the soundtrack of Lost Odyssey.., but he'll need time and new inspiration to make a new similar great soundtrack again.. (some other / later tracks were not as good)
It's good to see Sakaguchi is still passionate about making games after 40 someodd years. Hopefully his experience with Fantasian will encourage him to release this new game to consoles and PC at launch. Dark Fantasy is not a just western thing. There have been plenty of Japanese dark fantasy series. Berserk comes to mind immediately, but there are many with a Japanese setting like all those gore-filled anime OVAs from the 90s with ninjas, samurai, monks and demons.
Great point. I did a poor job with my FF16 example because my brain went immediately to dark fantasy in the form of an RPG instead of just gaming in general. FF16 was more of a western influenced dark fantasy title. Onimusha would’ve been a good option for me to mention too.
also like Madoka Magica basically restablishing that trend and creating the dark magical girl genre with it did help, even if that idea is over 10 years old and still going strong!
Oooh! This is great news! I wonder if they've already started already. But I sincerely hope Sakaguchi will relent on releasing Lost Odyssey for PC and other consoles once Fantasian is released. I hope folks will grab it and show him people want his RPG games still.
8:00 It's not hyperbolic. They're subjected to different kinds of criticism; sound design and catchiness don't always apply when judging the pure ingenuity of a composition (assuming that can be done). Personally I would say any of classical greats show more variety from a quick sampling, but I'm not as interested in them because I want the far superior experience of hearing a video game track with its own proprietary instruments. Great vid by the way. Had no idea about the new collaboration!
not going to happen; there is no final fantasy anymore since 10. sQuare enix already swapped out their core audience to western peasants which dont know what a good final fantasy is.
funny you say that cuz Sakaguchi & Uematsu announcing to be working on a dark fantasy (assuming RPG) oriented project WHILST Masahiro Sakurai stopping his own YT channel to return to whatever he wanted to work on in roughly the same timeframe does come across as a weird coincidence to me. Maybe it's just a coincidence after all but we should keep an eye on whatever comes around there!
@ ahh Sakurai! I follow Player Essence as well, and he was saying he’s working on the next Smash Bros, more than likely for the next Switch console. I mean who else could Nintendo trust with that? It’s one of Sakurai’s babies like Kirby and Kid Icarus. Anyway. It could be a possibility he’s working with these guys. I want to lean over more to Smash though. It’s all good man! History will tell! It’s history in the making!
I wish they do something about The last story franchise and lost odyssey too. i mean they could always do a remaster to see if theres potential interest on this franchises.
I really enjoyed Fantasian being a strong puzzle - turn based game. The last boss required you to think like 5 turns in advance. The difficulty was really refreshing for turn based.
Everyone needs to listen to the Last Oddysey ost even once, at least do yourself the favor of listening Howl Of The Departed is one of Uematsu's best tracks
You're impressed by that? You did know Yasunori Mitsuda got sick from the stress of working on the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, right? After asking Sakaguchi if he could. Not only that but MItsuda lost a lot of music for the game during the development from a hard disk failure I believe. When he got sick I believe this is when Uematsu contributed to the soundtrack. Uematsu contributed 9 songs and arranged 1 song. If you own the soundtrack like I do those tracks are: 1-17, 2-02, 2-04, 2-08, 2-16, 2-18, 2-21, 3-02, 3-07. In the Revival album release they were given English translation so if you look them up it might be under a different name from fan translations. Silent Light, Mystery of the Past, People Without Hope, Bike Chase, Underground Sewer, Primitive Mountain, Burn! Bobonga!, Tyran Castle, and Sealed Door. The arranged track he did was Boss Battle 1 composed by Noriko Matsueda of Front Mission 1 and 2 OST, Bahamut Lagoon OST, and FFX-2 OST and its vocal albums fame. Just in case you didn't know Uematsu worked on FF1, FF2, FF3, FF4, FF5, FF6, FF7, FF8, and FF9 and subsequent unreleased tracks all by himself. He also did many special vocal albums which is why we got the very first vocal ending theme in FF8 then again on FF9 and FF10 (he also did its soundtrack with help) and Square has been calling him to do each Final Fantasy game with a vocal theme since then (except didnt do any tracks for FF13 OST) which I believe Square was being run by that evil CEO who thought he could do FF without its creator. Uematsu also did many tracks for the MMORPG Final Fantasy 11 then again for Final Fantasy 14 1.0 and this is something that doesn't get brought up but when they did the whole FF14 2.0 thing the game itself didn't just change but the music so all that work Uematsu did which were like near 100 tracks poof. Only now exists in album form. And also during this exact time he was making FF14 1.0 music he was composing the sountrack The Last Story for Sakaguchi/s Mistwalker game. You want to talk about doing a lot of work this man Uematsu did a lot of work. Plus many will be listening to his newest OST in Fantasian for the first time.
I think it will be mid AA level. Sakaguchi is not only older, he has mentioned retiring a few times which tells me his energy is not quite there anymore as WELL as lost oddesey likely being the largest project he ever worked on... he's never really done AAA work. Q
Its weird that he never worked on a dark fantasy game outside of lost oddesey since he was at square when yasumi matsuno was. Which generally has been squares only dark fantasy series outside of yoko taros works
Sakaguchi doesn't want to develop FF anymore. Playing FF14 MMO, they got to experience genuine shock at story beats. Been asked by FF14 director to help develop content for it, doesn't want to as it would spoil the story for him.
Well lmao of course he's making another game after that dumbfounded stupid-ass decision to release that last game Fantasian ONLY on Apple Arcade for what was it, 2 years? They didn't make enough money by limiting the availability of that game so yeah, I am not surprised in the least.
yeah really dumb decision, got big exclusive apple money and now he's releasing to the mainstream platforms getting to double dip, you're right such a bad decision!
I mean the last 3 games mistwalker have made were mobile games only. Releasing fantasia on Apple Arcade only is par the course for mistwalker. If the last game of Mistwalker you know of is The Last Story, you haven't paid attention to their releases. Terra Battle Terra Battle 2 Fantasian, The last 3 games of mistwalker. All on mobile
I'm hoping Uematsu's retirement is a Miyazaki style of "retired" where he "retires" but just keeps coming back for projects.
Best comment on earth
Best comment
No expectations probably keep people from bothering you so you can ironically actually work lol being a celebrity gets in the way of art
All I have to add is that I’m playing Lost Odyssey, just got to the haunted mansion on disc two and it’s SICK
Sakaguchi doesn't wanna return to Lost Odyssey
love the soundtrack of Lost Odyssey.., but he'll need time and new inspiration to make a new similar great soundtrack again.. (some other / later tracks were not as good)
Disk two is slow just be warned. It picks back up quickly though
Great coverage! Thank you.
yess, I hope that these two never quits gaming, Hironobu and Uematsu are my hereos
nah, they should retire

I wanted them to make another jrpg that's like last story

Duuuuuude, What a beautiful day!
Mistwalker & overall Sakaguchi completist here, love it!

(glasses are already on my avatar btw)
The next variation draws inspiration from past works in which they were once a part. Hopefully formula will be rewritten in a interesting this time.
Nobuo is def Bach goat status, 2 absolute masters of their craft
Hopefully with square Enix as a FF game. This needs to happen at least 1 more time.
True Final Fantasy for Sakamoto
It wpuld be amazing but it will not happen
Never happening.
@@morriganrenfield8240 not sure if the money is good and there's creative freedom being allowed I think it's a win win situation.

Sakaguchi, Nobou, Yasunori Mitsuda, and Yuji Horii need to do something together at least one more time! Last thing they all did was Chrono Trigger.
funny you say that cuz Sakaguchi & Uematsu announcing to be working on a dark fantasy (assuming RPG) oriented project WHILST Masahiro Sakurai stopping his own YT channel to return to whatever he wanted to work on in roughly the same timeframe does come across as a weird coincidence to me. You know what is a lot of work? ONE guy working on the music for Chrono Trigger! 😮
He didn’t though
Two people worked on the chrono trigger soundtrack.
While Mitsuda did most of the heavy lifting, uematsu also contributed to it.
You're impressed by that? You did know Yasunori Mitsuda got sick from the stress of working on the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, right? After asking Sakaguchi if he could. @@RaifSeverence correct. Uematsu had a very minor role. Mitsuda put his health at risk. He gave everything and then some.
One man scoring Oriental Blue was a hell of a job too. All to end up in the Mario Party prison...
They did trademark a new name with the Fantasian name in it. Didnt catch wind of "Fantasian Dark Edge" ?

Bring on Matsuno
Oh. Yes.
I want another heroic fantasy like IX. But its pretty exciting !!!
It’s already a classic, whatever it is
nah, it'll be another nostalgia based game
After the failure of ff16, we will final get an actual dark jrpgs that's doesn't try to game of thrones season 8
Please don't let it be a mobile game
Release on all consoles this time do not make it PlayStation only once final fantasy and metal gear went to Xbox that's all I needed from ps
His worst final fantasy is better than anything we have nowadays 🤦
which ff is that?

Terra Battle 2
Fantasian,
The last 3 games of mistwalker. All on mobile
please don't let it be a game of throne knock off... bring back the FF9 art team to envision a true original dark fantasy
I wish they'd just name Sakaguchi the CEO of Squenix. He'd turn them around better than anyone else.
