11:00 The term JRPG was created to distinguish a style in the RPG that was missing in western or "traditional" RPG's. That style that is found in JRPG's is exactly what caused them to burst into the scene with so many amazing games. The culture, traditions, and views of the Japanese people are part of what makes those games great. For quite some time I sought out those games because they had a bit of a "spark" that was missing in western made games. While games are much more "global" now than they were, I still think there's both a visual and creative design difference between the two and it's still to this day the reason I keep my eye on games coming out from the east.
@Shifft-This yeah i think at this point jrpg is a genre that has nothing to do with nationality just like crpg has nothing to do with computers. Its a term thats outlived its original connotations but not its usefulness.
Don’t view current Final Fantasy as being true Final Fantasy games. Been a long time since I’ve liked where the series has gone. As such I’m really excited for Fantasian so I can actually get another true Final Fantasy experience from the minds of the people that put the series on the map.
I hope, if Square-enix decide to remake FFVI, they still have Sakaguchi involved in some capacity (Director, producer, etc.) And we don't need FFVI trilogy or whatever, just remake one game with some additional details over the story and fresh combat mechanic (imagine FFVI Remake with Expedition 33's combat.)
Secret of mana is a Japanese rpg. Secret of evermore is an American rpg. Fallout is an American rpg. Morrowind is an American rpg. A jrpg is an rpg made by a Japanese mind within the Japanese culture. There is a difference between a japan.
i agree. there is a difference. an RPG made in Japan by Japanese people is an JRPG, whether it's action or turn based. personally, i enjoy JRPGs more than american RPGs. there's something about JRPG that hooks me, i can't really explain it. i tried to love American RPG like i love JRPGs, but i find myself getting bored when i play american RPGs.
im gonna be honest, when i compare ff16 with 7 remake/rebirth, i cant help but think that MOST of the issues people complain about 16 only exist, because Yoshi P was too worried into making 16 more like 14. ALOT of its designs are things that, to me, are the reasons i cant stand 14. and while i do not think 16 is a bad game at all. i do think its not as good as it could, or even should've been.
Yoshi P doesn't like the term JRPG so first he got rid of the J (the flavour) and then he got rid of the RPG (the foundation) altogether and we got a game of thrones ripoff / dmc lite, mix of a game that doesn't deserve to be a mainline FF. It should be a spinoff like Tactics. Hope Square returns to its roots.
Yeah Nintendo at that time were a bit of an A hole, did Sony dirty when they were going to partner with them to make a console. And wouldn't listen to Square's requests about what their next game would need regarding hardware. Then in all irony those two paired together to make one of the best games made. This Fantasia looks very interesting, I'll be checking it out, Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
The partnership should expand further and bring other "lost" titles back to modern platforms like PS5, namely BLUE DRAGON, LOST ODYSSEY and THE LAST STORY, all developed by Mistwalker. Please, Square Enix. Many fans want to play these games again.
Many fans don't want and/or don't feel like playing them on PS5 though. Which is why Square Enix continues to fail. They can't stop being yanked on by the neck by Sony's dog leash.
This is another reason i dont like FF16. Its not even a JRPG. Its more of an action game with lite rpg elements. It has more in common with stuff like DMC due to the gameplay. If not for chocobos or summons, the game wouldn't even be recognized as a FF game to me.🙄
While I appreciate the video, why would you use FF VII Rebirth and FF X footages instead of FF6? Since Hironobu Sakaguchi mentioned that FF6 influenced him to produce and make Fantasian : Neo Dimension. RPG/JRPG’s are doing one thing before anything, and that’s telling story. The story can’t be fake but must have truth in it to help people. If not it at the very least be entertaining. 2nd is the gameplay along with saying something to help mankind it better be fun and we just can’t get enough of it. Addictive and fun gameplay. It also has to respect our time as players. Chrono Trigger is the epitome of that along with Dragon Quest XI S. Why FF wants to get away from its roots is puzzling to me. I mean I can also understand wanting to grow and do other things but the fans are the ones buying the stuff. There has to be some stuff in there the fans want while still doing something new. Nintendo and MonolithSoft has been doing it rather successfully for many years with many of their titles. I don’t see why Square or Sakaguchi can’t.
@FF8IrvineFan_ I used to think that, but over time I’ve realized they are trying to say something. That determines where the characters go and what they experience and the monsters they fight. So that’s why story and gameplay swapped for me.
Curious I'm sorry but you're incorrect...FF6 was beloved by RPG gamers who for the most part played other RPGs before 6 We don't love FF6 cause it's our first FF...you can use that logic when it comes to 1 or 4 or 7-10 but 6 wasn't a lot of ppl's first RPG it solidified people's love for RPGs
The point I was trying to make is that 6 is peoples favorite for different reasons. For some it was their first FF or RPG and that’s why they love it, for others it wasn’t their first but it became their favorite. That’s why I used the Doctor Who example.
Its more varied and complex than both the video and you give it credit. My first ff was mystic quest. It was awful and i decided rpgs were trash and didnt pick up another until ff13. I fell in love and went on a journey playing every single ff. 6 is now comfortably my favorite. We all come to these conclusions by different paths. Its not simple and its certainly not uniform.
Seeing too much hate on 16 so I’m gonna give it some love. 16 had one of the best stories to touch the series, easily one of the top games in the series. As far as the combat goes FRESH is nice turn base gets stale and I grew up with the old games and playing legend of dragoon as well as other titles. But the combat had more depth than some people have given it credit for, if you only did cool downs then you played very bland. Needless to say the combat was engaging and fun to learn. Now the controversial rpg element sure it lacked a big ass sphere grid and usually those could be fun to build and figure out but why not have an open mind and just enjoy the game made for you than put chains on a series Yoshi P developed a killer game and it feels like so many aren’t respecting that fact.
Ok, Yoshi P's statement last year is moot for several reasons. 1) BG3 launched after FF16 and made it forgettable. Splitting his team has not only hurt FF16 but also FF14. 2) SquareEnix hasn't released good games, so setting unrealistic company expectations for the FF series isn't helping. 3) They actually have worthy opponents now. Bandai Namco and Atlus have passed them by years ago. Metaphor has just come out and is currently dunking on everything, not named Black Myth or Astrobot. FF 7R will be lucky to get nominated for GOTY if there are any more surprises. 4)The Mana series is arguably their 2n best IP. Does anyone remember that the 1st new Mana game in decades launched this past summer?
JRPG being its own category is well deserved. They're not just setting out to make a good game. They're (at least the majority of the time) sticking to their conventions. There's a reason why you only need a quick glance at JRPG to label it as a JRPG yourself. Whether it be Trails series, Final Fantasy, Persona, Tales of, etc. And the Japanese games that don't fit the mold (like Elden Ring) well... They aren't labelled as JRPG. Now compare with western RPG games... Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Pillars of Eternity, etc... They're completely different beasts!
@@nuanceblacksywin4868 One thing.. What “exact criteria” does an rpg need to have to have that J moniker.. And, why is the J seemingly either frowned on or illegal to use in any other genre? For example J Fighter, J Horror, J Platformer, J Action Adventure etc You almost never see that.. Yoshi P made a statement about it last year if I’m not mistaken that it was discriminatory
@@Mintcar923 I wrote a long well thought out response to this... on my phone... and RUclips ate it. So I'm going to try one more time from my PC this time. FOREWARNING THIS SHHT IS LONG. Before I begin, please remember that you'll never understand why a moniker or change was made in pop culture without either understanding its history or actually being there and present when it was happening. With that said, the "JRPG" moniker was created by gamers to assist them in setting expectations for the adventure they were about to embark on. My childhood was spent playing JRPG's like Final Fantasy (I really started around the time of 7), Legend of Legaia, Suikoden, Tales of Destiny 2, Star Ocean, and Legend of Dragoon and the differences between these games and "regular" RPG's of that time couldn't be more profound. Let's start at what I believe is the biggest glaring difference. When you play Final Fantasy VII you play as Cloud Strife. Cloud already has history and lore in the game world. He's a Soldier, trained by Shinra and former childhood friend of Tifa. This character already existed in this story before I took control of him. I can go down the list of games I provided in my previous paragraph and give you a historical breakdown of the main protagonist and what they accomplished before I ever gained control of him. The character has history. In western RPG's, the character you play typically has no history outside of what you create for them at the character creation screen. In fact, almost every western RPG HAD a character creation screen. Where you pick their class, race, how they look etc. This is already a major key difference but it goes deeper. In western RPG's your choices would dictate the direction of story. Your character, when given the option would be given a list (sometimes upwards of 7 choices or more) that could drastically dictate where the story ended or even more simply where your character would travel next. In comparison, if you play through the entirety of FF7 there might be 5 times in the game where you're given a choice and it's typically a "Yes" or "No" option and how you answer is irrelevant because you will still need to proceed to the exact same plot point thereafter and the game will end in the exact same way it's supposed to regardless of your choice... which makes sense... because you're playing Cloud and Cloud is going to act like Cloud even if you're the one playing him right now. These differences are huge. The difference between controlling Cloud on his adventure through Final Fantasy VII and playing the character you created in Elder Scrolls: Morrowind are night and day. The same could be said about other western RPG's of their time like Ultima or Wizardy, or Baldur's Gate. These games would allow you to become a villain if you so choose and you could kill people you shouldn't. In Final Fantasy, your character will always be who they are. You as a player have no agency over their actions other than controlling them as they perform them. Keep in mind, I have only listed two key differences: Character Creation and Player Control. But the western and eastern game design around these two key factors make for completely different gaming experiences. Surely anyone that has played both FF7 and Elder Scrolls: Morrowind would agree that even though both of these games are "RPG's" there are more differences between these two gaming experiences than there are similarities which is the reason the "JRPG" moniker was created to begin with. It wasn't to discriminate against eastern RPG's it was an attempt by the players to set expectations for a potential player to understand what kind of RPG experience they were about to partake in. Just to put this in perspective, I'm currently playing Dragon's Dogma 2 (a JRPG) and none of the points I made in this long post would be valid when held up to Dragon's Dogma. The terminology of JRPG was created at a time when the differences between western RPG's and JRPG's were much much more pronounced. Even though differences still exist today, those differences will not be the same as they were in 1997. The reason why there's no such thing as a "J Fighter" or a "J Platformer" is because there was literally no distinguishing difference between a east and west fighters or platformers. The mechanical design of the games were so similar that you couldn't tell them apart. Unlike RPG's. If I finished up an Elder Scrolls game and asked a friend "What RPG should I play next since I loved Elder Scrolls" and he suggested Final Fantasy 7 to me, he would deserve to be slapped in the face as these two games (while both RPG's) have very little in common with each other from a gameplay perspective and in a vacuum you could say they are nothing alike. The thing is... those differences I pointed out between FF7 and Morrowind were (at the time) able to be generalized amongst the broader gaming market. Most Western RPG's allowed you to create your own character, be a villain, and get different endings. Most Eastern RPG's gave you control of a preconceived character, with history and story already behind them, and a linear ending that you would always get upon game completion.
@@Shifft-This I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone here.. There are very distinctive Japanese styles in other genres as well as non Japanese.. Is Blazblu the same stylistically as Mortal Kombat? Is God of War the same stylistically as Bayonetta? Is Super Mario the same stylistically as Prince of Persia? Is Until Dawn the same kind of horror game as Silent Hill? I could go on and on with this.. Even if we went with the ultra nationalist terminology in one genre the concept is at best woefully outdated anyways because technically any game from any region could have any style under the sun especially nowadays.. I just think Yoshi P would know what he’s talking about.. Why would he come out against something if there were no point to it you know? That said I have no reservations about the term J RPG in a non nationalistic way.. Let’s say short for Journey RPGs or Jr RPGs.. Meaning lighter rpg elements than something like D & D But because that would make perfect sense and would make everyone happy of course it wouldn’t be implemented.. We have stuff like Persona in the same genre as Octopath as well as Dragons Dogma.. I mean it just blows my mind.. @@Mintcar923 "I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone here.." I feel like we're discussing different topics. You said, "there are very distinctive Japanese styles in other genres as well..." but we're not just discussing styles, I'm talking about entire FEATURES that are expected to be in the RPG genre that were missing in these "RPG's" that were coming out of Japan. I've already given enough examples so I won't dive into it deeper. Let's just say that if I play 7 RPG's and 6 of them allow me to create a character and have diverging plot points with multiple endings and then I play the 7th game and I can't create a custom character and it doesn't have diverging plot points/multiple endings I would wonder why the last RPG I played didn't allow me to utilize the same game/genre mechanics that are a staple of that genre that were present in the previous 6 RPG's I played.
@@Shifft-This I was born in ‘75.. There always were RPGs to come from various regions yet none of my classic gaming magazines have any sort of majestic what makes east west rpg comparison.. I really don’t understand how I’m losing you.. So I suggest just research what Yoshi P said in his statement against the term last year.. Additionally going back about half the reviewers agreed with him and averted using the term for months on end.. Then something happened where a lot of the same people started overtly overusing the term later out of spite which was just so childish and immature.. Why would they concede it was a bad term then double down at a later time lest there were some kind of agenda in play? All i know is as per pure definition of “Japanese RPG” any game created in that province can technically have any style thus why go the nationalist route? Especially because we don’t do it in any other genre.. A lot of what you’re saying is purely aesthetics.. Nioh 2 has create a character so I guess it’s “western” DD 2 has create a character so I guess it’s “western..” I mean it’s just so ridiculous!! Having one genre as the exception to the rule where it’s mandatory to reference a state makes absolutely no sense.. Additionally if a game made in Korea has a style that is what we’ve seen from Japan it’s technically incorrect to call it that.. Though again we can only say Japan we can’t call let’s say Skyrim a US RPG.. Everything else on the planet must be lumped all together as western lol Can’t call AC a European RPG even though it’s vastly different than American ones!! You see what I’m getting at IDK man it’s just a stupid term.. And I don’t get the utter worship of it tbh I offered up much better solutions where people wouldn’t fight about it as stated but hey I guess it’s people love to argue and like controversial terms
Well no s***! Even Nintendo mentioned in an old NintendoLife article years old that they literally said to them (him and Square) "Never come back". Right now, Square Enix is simply only using Sakaguchi and his game Fantasian Neo Dimension as a sort of "scapegoat" to cover up all their failures with FF16, 7 Rebirth, and several other games (Foamstars, Harvestella, and more) in hopes of making some money back that they lost. That's never gonna work. He should have gone to Nintendo to publish Fantasian. His game may be end up being good, but Square doesn't deserve money from players as a sort of way to get them back on good graces. It's as if Yoshi-P and many others at Square Enix still have that controversial answer from Phil Fish from years ago still locked into their minds or whatever when he was interviewed by a developer and the answer he said at the time that Japanese games "suck" and they should "get with the times" and be more like what western developers were doing. In all honesty, that answer still lingers within Square because with all the recent game failures and their games not meeting expectations and chasing trends, Square Enix still has that mindset of westernizing their Japanese games and trying to appeal to the wrong type of audience and chasing trends and messing up their gameplay to be more westernized and not being more "niche" and going back to their traditional Japanese RPG roots that fans do want again. Square as they are is so desperate for anything to help get them out of their slump but they refuse to go back to basics.
I would say SE is foolish and incompetent...maybe overly arrogant...but I don't think they are malicious. I hope this game can help them see the light.

I'm excited about this Fantasian : Neo Dimension because it is influenced by FF6 the best FF game in thee series !
I don't think anyone who uses that argument realizes that this is not what it means. FF games have always reimagined how they can tackle *turn based combat* , which is what FFI to FFX did. Every single FF game prior to X is full on turn based, heck, XI still has its own sort of turn based with how its system function and XII taking samples out of it shows that, XIII too, is turn based. XIV, back in 1.0, was similar to XI until ARR happened and they made the combat a lot more digestible to modern MMORPG audiences. So far XV and XVI are the only mainline entries that did not use turn based combat. And unlike XVI, XV kept being a RPG. While unfortunately having rather shallow combat in comparison to "watered down DMC Final Fantasy". 🤷 TLDR: No, XVI did not reinvent itself, it's a completely unrelated entry that deserves the title of a (high budget) spin-off rather than being a mainline title. And the MMOs do not count as a counter-argument. Their cases are completely different as multiplayer games.
I forgot to add that they should not use the same turnbase system but what they can do to improve an already established turn-base system that make FF in general like what new FF7 rebirth and remake did. FF16 if you take away these eikons It won't feel like FF at all and the only character you can control is Clive.
@@ShuraBeem, Games like Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default knows how to properly refine and modernize the Turn-Based formula the right way. Which is what FF needs to learn and go back to. Heck, even Dragon Quest continues to do things right.

@FF8IrvineFan_ It's not entirely Square, but they're allowing it to happen. If you search you'll see interviews talking about this problem without them... talking about this problem. I can't remember if it was Yoshida or Nomura but during an interview one of them even said that (I'm paraphrasing here) the pressure from people outside of Japan to change the way they are designing games (artistically and mechanically) is so high that they can no longer make a game without getting pushback from various people about the way a character is designed. Put simply, western political correctness (you know what word could replace this) is stamping out creativity at the creative floor as these games are being made all under the guise of "reaching a wider audience".

Don’t view current Final Fantasy as being true Final Fantasy games. Been a long time since I’ve liked where the series has gone. As such I’m really excited for Fantasian so I can actually get another true Final Fantasy experience from the minds of the people that put the series on the map.
I hope, if Square-enix decide to remake FFVI, they still have Sakaguchi involved in some capacity (Director, producer, etc.)
And we don't need FFVI trilogy or whatever, just remake one game with some additional details over the story and fresh combat mechanic (imagine FFVI Remake with Expedition 33's combat.)
Thank you.
Man I came looking for info on Fantasian and thought the video was good, well thought out… but the comments are full of hate and bitterness.
If this outsells ff16 I'm gonna laugh
They can say there is no market for turn based, but bg3 sold more copies than ff16
I preordered Fantasian, but will plau DQ3 remake first that comes out few weeks before

The last story definitely.

This is another reason i dont like FF16. Its not even a JRPG. Its more of an action game with lite rpg elements. It has more in common with stuff like DMC due to the gameplay. If not for chocobos or summons, the game wouldn't even be recognized as a FF game to me.🙄

There's too much padding in this video.. cover the interview.
While I appreciate the video, why would you use FF VII Rebirth and FF X footages instead of FF6? Since Hironobu Sakaguchi mentioned that FF6 influenced him to produce and make Fantasian : Neo Dimension. I feel that this would be much better if you do the video with more FF6 footages to honour the content and quotes from Hironobu Sakaguchi.
there was FF6 footage ; it's good he tossed some of different games in there imo. Makes the video more dynamic and visually pleasing (not that I don't like the visuals of FF6)
Unfortunately I don’t have much footage of VI, but I wanted to use footage of VII Rebirth to punctuate the talk about voice work (specifically pointing out Cody Christian as Cloud), and I used footage of FFX for the general JRPG talk.
@@armorvil There is only a few, but most of the video contains FF VII Rebirth and FFX footage. Since Hironobu Sakaguchi talks about FF6 influence Fantasian : Neo Dimension game, there should be more FF6 footage compared to the rest.

triangle strategy needs a ps5 port. I agree ff7 should be on other consules but why don't everyone keep that same energy when it comes to other games coming to ps5. Like triangle strategy and dead rising 3.
MonolithSoft is the new SquareSoft.
I agree with Irvine. Gameplay is always first. Those snes and psx FFs were like MMOs in single player form.
@FF8IrvineFan_ I used to think that, but over time I’ve realized they are trying to say something. That determines where the characters go and what they experience and the monsters they fight. So that’s why story and gameplay swapped for me.

Curious I'm sorry but you're incorrect...FF6 was beloved by RPG gamers who for the most part played other RPGs before 6
We don't love FF6 cause it's our first FF...you can use that logic when it comes to 1 or 4 or 7-10 but 6 wasn't a lot of ppl's first RPG
it solidified people's love for RPGs
The point I was trying to make is that 6 is peoples favorite for different reasons. For some it was their first FF or RPG and that’s why they love it, for others it wasn’t their first but it became their favorite. That’s why I used the Doctor Who example.
@CuriousCorduroy I think the point has more validity with 1 or 4 and 7-10 discussions. Just based on what I experienced when these games were released
@ChicCanyon you validated what I said ty for most ppl ff6 was not their first FF
@eddy5097 and yet i invalidated what you said as well. You cant predict how people got to where they are. Its unpredictable.
Does anyone remember that the 1st new Mana game in decades launched this past summer?
wait are you Daniel Owen?

For example J Fighter, J Horror, J Platformer, J Action Adventure etc
You almost never see that..
Everything allegedly from Japan that is RPGs just being lumped together with literal obsession.. IDK maybe it gives people some kind of high to do that😜
@@Mintcar923 "I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone here.." I feel like we're discussing different topics.
Nioh 2 has create a character so I guess it’s “western” DD 2 has create a character so I guess it’s “western..”
I mean it’s just so ridiculous!!
You see what I’m getting at
IDK man it’s just a stupid term..

TLDR: No, XVI did not reinvent itself, it's a completely unrelated entry that deserves the title of a (high budget) spin-off rather than being a mainline title.
