  • 'Nostalgic_Vintage_Retro' (NVR) drive through Downtown Los Angeles in late 1950s or early 1960s. Compare street views back then and now, driving habits of the Past. How much of a difference 70+ years of progress makes? Don't you think that not only pavement was better back then?

This is 1961 given the significant number of 1960 and 1961 Automobiles. Pontiac Wagon, Mercury Comet, Ramblers and the 61 Chevy.

Also that movie Homicidal, with its "Fright Break" came out in 1961. Sounds like a rip-off of Psycho.

I don't know why they don't bring back those old deco street lights. So many cities have done this or kept the original ones. Makes it look much classier and shows a certain degree of pride.

The reason why that the city removed the old glass globe lighting is because you have too many demonic destructive subhuman creatures in society that would break the glass globe tops Just like neon lighting That's is why beauty disappeared

Actually Hill St. looks a lot more attractive today. Only thing I prefer in the earlier era is that there was less traffic congestion. And Pershing Square did look a lot more lush with greenery back then. Today the park is a monstrosity.

Actually, there were plenty of "homeless" on the Skid Row streets of the early 60s. They were called "derelicts" and "hobos" then and most were men but there were some women; both had alcohol but not much, if any, drug problems yet. They didn't roam all over and leave trash, food or clothing everywhere, though. Pershing Square had quite a few unemployed hanging out there. But mostly they were down by the Union Rescue Mission which I think was on Main Street in those days.
Downtown L.A.--when I first moved there in February 1963--was clean and stores/shop keepers made sure the sidewalks were tidy and everything was inviting for business. There were wonderful department stores like Robinson's, Bullock's, The Broadway, May Company and furniture stores like Barker Bros. where I bought a beautiful wood chest of drawers which I still have. I never felt unsafe traveling all over the city. It was a great place to live.

Not only dope addict zombies But illegal aliens with illegal nonpermited pop up sidewalk taco stands and other street vending Well they figure I got away with being on this country illegally So now I feel as if there is no laws When one law gets overlooked Then all laws are going to get overlooked That is what we see now is all this lawlessness and chaos and mayham

Nothing much changed except the streets are now just filled with ugly ass foreign cars because America has sold out to the highest bidder. I'm glad I at least got to see America when I was a young kid in the late 50s and all through the 60s when America was still sane.

Its 1961 because the movies featured in the theaters such as Most Dangerous Man and One Eyed Jack were all released in 1961.. I guess in Los Angeles people kept their cars a lot longer because there are many cars in the video from the early 1950s.

Yep...I was born in the latter part of the 50s...I have always said the 60s didn't start until around 62', before that everything still seemed like the 50s to me. I started school in 62' and we used 1940s and early 50s Dick and Jane reading books.

Kirk, I remember that Friday very well. No one who was at least a teenager then has forgotten the shock and dismay over President John Kennedy's assassination. Flags immediately were lowered to half-mast. His funeral was on Monday and everyone I knew watched and wept.
