  • There are two different sounds for ㄹ.
When it's a beginning sound, it's closer to "L" sound. Tongue firmly presses the roof of your mouth right above your upper teeth.
When it's in the middle of the word, it's closer to "R" sound. Tongue is a bit further back and gently and quickly moves towards the front as it barely (or not even at all) touches the roof of your mouth. This has a slight "d" sound in the beginning. (like "bottle" or "battle")
    리더 (li deo) - leader
    소리 (so ri) - sound
올려 (ol lyeo) - raise it up
를 (leul) - object marker; pronouncing the word by itself
    나를 (na reul) - me

You might be wondering why I filmed in my closet. This was the only quiet place I could find where I can rest my arm to hold my phone for filming. The closet drawer was my arm rest.
I also have a bit of a cold and so my voice wasn't so clear at times. Sorry about that.

Thank you for the detailed explanation!! I’m so tired of other RUclipsrs explaining ㄹ but all they do is say “it’s not R or L” or use the same examples over and over and over again (라디오, 라면 😑) and refuse to go more in depth. I struggle with ㄹ려 especially so I’m glad you did a part on 올려.

I thought this might be harder due to me being in years of speech therapy due to not being able to pronounce Rs when I was a lot younger. I vaguely remember for therapist to get me to pronounces R correctly she had me drinking yogurt out of thin cocktail straws to help position my tongue correctly for Rs and for a small time frame I pronounced Rs by touching the roof of my mouth which is similar to ㄹ, the main difference being for a standard(American English) R( such as the word rabbit) you pretty much have you’re tongue hovering under the roof of your mouth if you bring the tip of tongue up to the roof and it should help you position for ㄹ. Just a personal observation I’ve noticed for myself.
