  • Joseph Smith III, termed a "pragmatic prophet" by biographer Roger D. Launius, led the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for 64 years, promoting "moderate Mormonism." While adopting a balanced approach on most issues, his unwavering stance denying his father's initiation of polygamy deviated from this pragmatism. Despite ample evidence from various sources, Joseph III chose to protect his father's reputation over addressing the concerns of the Latter Day Saint community. This lecture explores Joseph III's tenure, his missions to Utah, and the ongoing ramifications of his stance on polygamy for Community of Christ.

I think it bears mentioning that the biggest ironic side effect of JSIII's insistence on his father's innocence was that the Utah church themselves, in their attempt to discredit him, started collecting sworn affidavits from JS Jr.'s plural wives that have now come back to haunt them.😂

I have heard rumours of the Polygamy charges before. Now I can finally historically correct any more false statements.

It's definitely time to stop treating people like prophets. God speaks to everyone, or to no one, and nothing in between.

With polygamy being the initial standard for Mormons, how did they accomplish this?
Did they have 3-4 converted females for every converted male?

Polygamy was initially practiced only by the leadership. This allowed them to take already-married women and unmarried teenage girls as secret wives. The pool of women was only slightly larger than that of men, but availability became higher once other social norms were thrown out the window.

Nah, they just trade daughters with each other or worse. He has a pretty in depth lecture with the details I think the title was " Joseph Smith and Polygamy".

Didn’t the Brighamites ship a lot of women “converts” to the US from Europe? Today this would be called human trafficking.

Perhaps a better word is unwise rather than unpragmatic

John..I and many others withdrew our membership from the RLDS when the 156 revelation on women in the priesthood came out. We also don’t accept the reasons for the RLDS temple. We believe it was built in the wrong place using the wrong design. Also it was built for the wrong reason. Several seventies left the church also giving up their retirement in the process. We have reorganized into several different groups holding on to the original teachings of the original church of 1830 and the RLDS.

Professor John Hamer, I am extremely impressed with your lecture on the Prophet's Joseph's son, Joseph Smith 3rd. As a Brighamite, and of a long Brighmite heritage, I am profoundly and deeply impressed by your illustration and teaching revelations of the quality and character of President Joseph Smith 3rd . My personal impressions of Emma Hale Smith has tremendously increased after carefully listening to your lecture on her son Joseph 3rd for sons , in large part, influenced by the teachings and examples of their mother
Although, in my youth, I was fiercely embarrassed by my church's practice of " celestial marriage". But, I owed it to my ancestors and to a lesser extent to my SLC church, to carefully review and study the precepts of polygamy. This is the one issue, I disagree with President Joseph III. Although, I question some of the prophet Joseph's tactics, I wholeheartedly have come to the belief that the prophet Joseph acted in good faith and in honest and forthright action in his attempts to restore the institution of polygamy. First and foremost, the prophet Joseph was a restorationist. Unquestionably, polygamy was well practiced in ancient Israel and is liberally permitted by the Leveriate law. The Roman-Greco law has the prohibition against polygamy. The Roman Universal church extended Rome's authority and prohibition against polygamy. An interesting example is the Merovingian practice of polygamy. Upon the overthrow of the Merovingian dynasty and the advent of Charolagnme, as Holy Roman Emperor the practice of polygamy became disfavored. Thus, within the Holy Roman Empire , Saxony, Frisian, Juteland, Catalonia, the practice of polygamy went underground and tribal leaders made public denials to Rome' s representatives. This is unmistakenly an historical fact.
The prophet Joseph was only following historical precedent given his commitment to the legitimate concept of restoration. I am of the opinion that President Joseph Smith 3rd had his father's dynamic charisma and leadership skills, also, on many levels his father's mystic gifts.
Yet, intellectually, inherited from his mother subjects such as polygamy which are aspects of restoration theory that are to much for western mechanistic reductionist people with a mainly Roman Greco worldview to accept. For instance, if such a view , as polygamy was practiced in the east, such as Ethopia, Entries, or near east, Arabia, Armenia, or Lebanon the Mormon practice of polygamy would be accepted and quite possibly embraced.
In reflection, my thoughts are President Joseph Smith 3rd, matured to embody , perhaps, the finest qualities of our prophet Joseph and the best qualities of brother Brigham.
That is Joseph 3rd appears to have developed the organizational and political skills and pragmatism of Brigham Young. While also developing the intellectual, spiritual and mystic charisma of his father Joseph Smith Jr.
He appears to have done so while fostering healing and positive union.
Next, to the prophet Joseph, I have always deeply admired President Joseph F. Smith , the prophets nephew. Nonetheless, upon purview of your lecture, I have come to also place , the prophets son , Joseph Smith 3rd, next to the prophet in my personal admiration attended by his cousin Joseph F Smith. Truly a remarkable family.
