I have spent a lot of time watching tutorials for various gear over the years. Kenny's tutorials on Reaper are hands down the best tutorials I have ever watched! A HUGE thankyou my friend!
Very good and worthwhile, really. My best results are with this kind of 'manual' work in audio.Controlling volumes, frequencies, compression in specific parts of the spectrum, has given me surprising results.Your instructions are very important Kenny. Thanks again. Roberto.
I have now made 3 songs in Reaper and a few instrumentals. I always find the answers to my questions with these breakdowns. Im constantly referring back to them during the process. Self teaching is slow and painful but worth the effort as you will be able to assist others in the future.
Got Dayum Kenny!! This is possibly the most helpful video I have ever seen! You have answered questions I have been going crazy over for two days about distortion with limiters. Thank You!!
Usually clippers work better then limiters in my experience. And try compressing and limiting mid sides separate. I got my drums to knock harder by turning the sides down go figure.
Just learnt so much right now, only been recording through out lockdown etc… was trying to get my songs to stay in the green, now I’ve got some help. Thanks a lot dude 👍🏼
@@REAPERMania hey Kenny when I record guitar on reaper is clipping to hit +0 on heavy part ? Like really heavy. For example I see the track that goes purple and it say +0 while I don't clip on my interface. It is really clipping? Or is just an indicator?
Very helpful Kenny! And perfect timing. I just rendered a master wav file and sent it to a friend to so he could play/record a live drum track so I could add it back into my project. He noticed some slight clipping. When I researched it inside Reaper, he was right. Too hot. I'm going to use your tips from this video to fix it and resend my new wav file to him for the drum track. Thank you!
You're a freaking genius. Thank you..I was so in the dark all this while. This whole thing was literally a mystery to me. I never got around to even delve into the topic thinking it was rocket science. You made it look so easy man. Thank you.
Thanks for the tutorial I made drum covers using e-drums and vst, I always asked myself why the main channel was always clipping. Now I know the answer and the right solution :)
(5:28) The display of the gain reduction seems to be a bit buggy for the JS limiter. But it can be easily fixed in the code by not updating the slider at sample rate.
Great tutorial Kenny. This is exactly the info I needed to watch to help me. By the way, I love the track you're working with, is there a name I can look up to hear it in full?
I'm a little confused. In a different volume video, you said that the volume smoother on works in the control room monitors and doesn't change the output level. Does it work differently when applied on a track as opposed to the master? What about a sub?
Very cool, so I recently sent a recording, just the clean D.I. signal from guitar to a friend to mix and he said I was clipping which was surprising since I usually check it or hear it.I ddint even notice. Can we use the tricks in this video, so that I can avoid re-recording? Thanks, Rob
Would this work on vocals solod that were directly recorded into reaper too hot? I have a usb condensed mic and I can't figure out any other way to lower the gain on my mic
Thanks again for the video and I have learned a lot regarding this issue, for before knowing this, I was just inserting limiter to avoid clipping, no wonder why my mix did not sound well during mastering. Thanks a bunch. Question: I though all Reaper's plugins, including StillWell were free, how come Event Horizon cost 25-30 USD?
What if the drums are the only thing clipping. What do i do then? Im not sure im seeing exactly what needs to be turned down. Using One Kit Wonder Metal.
I get confused because the master fader seems to read as clipping but I rarely audibly hear it...I guess I'm worried about my mixes not being loud enough. At times it seems that the master fader clipping level is a bit misleading.
So for me, Reaper doesn't actually sound like it's clipping, my only indication is the volume bar's color and it's numbers. It just sounds louder, but still in-quality, if that makes sense? So it's easy to think I'm setting my levels and getting a nice OOMPH. Then send it to buddy on his FL or other buddy on Cubase and they tell me it's clipping. Meanwhile I made it clip tryna make it sound bigger while mixing. Or at worst, made it clip by setting my recording levels wrong and have to redo everything. It literally just does not distort! So my question is, how do I turn on clipping? How do I make it so I can hear when it distorts? This way I can have an accurate idea of how it sounds when I'm mixing.
Great video..So just to be clear. If I clip at the source when I'm recording a track, it does not matter if I turn the db down enough on the master buss with a volume plugin???? Thanks for your help!!!
So this is about dealing with clipping that results from raising the volume of the track, correct? What if the input audio is clipped because the instrument or vocal is too loud? How do you avoid that kind of clipping?
This is a useful video but can anybody tell me a simple way to see if something I recorded from an outside source is clipped? In audacity, there is a "show clipping" option that did the trick.
I guess my problem is different. I don't have an always loud track. It's preaching, so sometimes the preacher gets soft, sometimes loud. For a few years when we've started recording the messages, I've manually put cuts and adjusted volumes around each part that was clipping. This is super time consuming and I recently learned about limiters, which has also led me here. The info in this video is very helpful in general, but not useful in a case where you need soft parts to be boosted, but loud parts to be reduced not to clip. I know that's what the limiter is supposed to do, but I'm having mixed results which several of the ones I'm trying. I'm still getting clipping at the loud parts.
Ok nevermind. I moved the limiter from the track to the master, and holy cow. I still got a lot to learn, but I thank you Kenny for these tutorials. I've watched 5 today and feel like a whole new man.
Hey! love the rendering trick to test levels. Just one problem, all my render settings are set the same as you, including 'full speed offline' and I'm still rendering at snails pace. Shouldn't be happening, my computers definitely fast enough etc Do you have a supercomputer or am I doing something wrong?
I'm guessing he doesn't have that many tracks in this tutorial and that they have no fx on them. As soon as all those effects chains start growing, the speed is going to go down.
Even though what you are doing obviously works in the digital realm, why would you recommend mixing using this method? Obviously you have done some work on the individual tracks to create a balance. Why wouldn't you correct the clipping during the mix rather than the end. I had the same thoughts on your gain staging video. if your kick is clipping at plus 24 db, how can you properly mix in any other tracks without clipping them as well? I don't understand the benefit derived from this method.
I think the fader might effect the volume BEFORE the plugins and in this case you want it to compress first before the volume gets lower so the compressor still works properly. I might be wrong but that seems the most logical to me.
i always thought it wasnt good to put fx on the master channel? i usually make a submix track then send that to the master channel and just use a limiter but ill try this thank you.
You must have a different Render setting in your Reaper version that I'm not aware of. Mine still renders sound to a saved file inside a folder even if it's set to Full-speed Offline...
This should be the most subscribed channel in the history of RUclips. I've learnt so much from your short and snappy vids. But some people would rather watch videos of cats, whispering and (insert pointless celeb of choice). In a way, I'm glad that you don't have 20million subscribers, because then the knowledge we gain will be less exclusive and everyone in the world will have completed Reaper and Cockos will retire again.
s. brooks clipping on the master bus causes a different type of distortion that's very undesirable. the clipping built into the limiter had a stylized effect that can enhance the sound.
otherwise you're affecting the master volume chain. The purpose of this method is reducing the volume before the end of the chain, and then if you want use some other plugin after it. That's what I understand.
Correct. If you're not using any plugins, it doesn't really matter. If you are using a plugins, it also doesn't matter unless you're using a limiter at the end of the chain. Using the Master fader in that situation will affect the volume AFTER the last plug. So you'll already be using soft-clipping before that fader. Plus, I like to keep my Master fader at 0dB. Just a habit I like.
So , non of the reaper-plugins do clip, when they Show red Light. right? this is another Question, i know.. but surrounding the same Thema.. And they only Clip when you exceed 0 db, when Exporting Audio, like you showed in this Vid. (Ok, if you would go insanely high overriding Volume , you would (in Standardsettings) Clip even before that last Moment... cause Standard is 32 bit calculations, after that there is also no Room, meaning clipping, but you have to exceed haviely Red Light)

Another cool video. Short, clear, and very useful. Thanks, Genny!

Putting the limiter just after the Volume Smoother FX is an awesome trick !! Give Thanks
Thank you for this superb video! I'm sure I'll be checking out many more of your vids!
I do not know how you manage to learn something so thoroughly, and then to present it so clearly. But I am very grateful! Thanks.
Thank you

You saved my track love you and appreciate your videos. Keep doing you, it is helping a lot of us.
Kenny, you are really a 'Jóia' (Jewel, in portuguese). Thank you, one thousand times.
Amazing brother! Thank you for this!
I use the exact same method, good to see it here too, thanks : )
You’re the beat Kenny! Thanks man.
This is pure gold. Thank you very much.
Amazing as Always!!!
Really Thanks K.!
Really helpful your tutorial eased my stress! THUMBS UP!
Kenny, how to check which part of the stereo mix file is the most loud part
Thanks for the tutorial

Whats mean (és) in the attack and lookahead function? 5:56 .
Thank you sooo much man. That was a huge problem for me

Very very useful technique. Thanks Kenny...what if I just put a ReaEQ, flat setting and just reduce the ReaEQ's output gain, instead of doing this?

You are the best, thank you

How do i set it so i can see the levels below as well as on the side
Would this work on vocals solod that were directly recorded into reaper too hot? I have a usb condensed mic and I can't figure out any other way to lower the gain on my mic
Does it matter if the individual track is clipping by some small degree?
Tnx man, love u, u are the best.

Yeah but keep in mind that if you'd place an FX on the Channel Track it will Clip the FX's gain staging so You can Master Fix just a Fxless track

Great video..So just to be clear. If I clip at the source when I'm recording a track, it does not matter if I turn the db down enough on the master buss with a volume plugin???? Thanks for your help!!!
That is correct. Once you clipped, it's clipped.
So this is about dealing with clipping that results from raising the volume of the track, correct? What if the input audio is clipped because the instrument or vocal is too loud? How do you avoid that kind of clipping?
You can't really undo clipping that has already happened on a file.

I don't understand why you would use a separate plugin to control the volume when you can just use the fader, am I missing something?
This is my question.
Yeah same here... This seems redundant somehow?? But I have no clue... I'm a noob to all things audio
Same doubt, i'm dying with all this clipping in my records
I think the fader might effect the volume BEFORE the plugins and in this case you want it to compress first before the volume gets lower so the compressor still works properly. I might be wrong but that seems the most logical to me.
@@Jmdeleeuw- I mean, that sounds right. It's order of operations. The slider on the track is PRE FX, right?
when i render it says it's good but i still hear clipping, its really frustrating, can someone help please?
i always thought it wasnt good to put fx on the master channel? i usually make a submix track then send that to the master channel and just use a limiter but ill try this thank you.

I never said i had any problems and you make no sense!
OK!
You must have a different Render setting in your Reaper version that I'm not aware of. Mine still renders sound to a saved file inside a folder even if it's set to Full-speed Offline...
Luis Rodriguez so did Kenny's, it was just really fast.
A file was still being rendered. I just delete it later.
REAPER Mania...My bad. I thought the file did not render while doing that, but I see that it does. Thanks.

What's a volume plugin? Is it a compressor or what?
It's a trim plugin
Why i dont have that crank option? 0:47
Clipping synonymous with distortion? So, it's okay if it clips as long as you adjust via JS volume
s. brooks clipping on the master bus causes a different type of distortion that's very undesirable. the clipping built into the limiter had a stylized effect that can enhance the sound.
Thanks
not working for me
Why not just decrease the master fader 8 db? Why do you need a plugin?
