Circa ~2007ish, GW/Citadel had started to use 3-ups with newly created 3D scanners, so they used those instead of pantographs. The scans were used to create molds using machinists who literally carved out the metal injection mould.
Then 3D printing came along, so they completely changed their process. However, a few models still made it to production during this time period, notably the Ultramarine Tyrannic War veterans and Ultramarine Honor Guard. I think the original Grey Knights from the first Demonhunters codex were made from 3-ups. You can find pictures of the original sculpts if you look around.
Anyway, 3D scanners are great for mini making because you can sculpt something at a large scale, scan it, then shrink it down. It's how you get stuff like inscriptions or eyeballs with irises on 15, 10, or 5 mm models. It'd be impossible to sculpt at the same scale the final product will be in, but a 3D scanner fixes that.

Really interesting and really good results for playing around. Scanning and 3D printing parts would be really handy especially for broken parts.
Still a bit out of my price range but wasn't too shocked when I saw the cost.

i wonder if it would scan a primed miniature better? the dark recesses would register as further away and the white highlights as closer?

Possible, I will try and do more smaller items to see how it goes 🙂

scans work better if the models are white mate, creality even tell you to spray models white first before scanning rhwm. alaso helps to use their special backgrpiund thing that comes with it.

Nothing wrong with scanning minis you have bought so u can scale them down to say 15mm for your own personal use. If GW would sell stls they'd clean up.

Did this scan layers of paint? Maybe thats why he looked gooey. But if thats true, you can study paint thickness.

photogrammetry, turning photographs to 3d with AI, would perhaps give better results than that scanner
