I didn't read enough comments to see people trashing him? His electronic projects are great but mechanically - nope! I was a professional motorcycle mechanic for decades and taught at a motorcycle trade school for over a decade. I studied the engineering of engines and associated systems as much as I could from the late sixties. There were no trade schools for motorcycle mechanics until around 1980 (there is actually quite a lot available in print from 1950's on though from basics to advanced ) I have criticised his method of sealing valves plus explained why valve guide removal was wrong (just in case it's me your talking about) Bad advice is actually worse than no advice, it's major problem online. I have even told Bryan Fuller (various TV shows) he should stick to cars as his motorcycle modifications are bad even if not dangerous (although the way overpriced CB750 he built several years ago probably was, ground clearance for cornering had been reduced too far)
When I got a Jawa moped the thyristor was bad. I found plans online to build something like this. 20 years later it still works. Pretty much the same thing.

In general, it is possible, but it may require some modifications to the car's original system and the use of newer tools (such as electronic sensors). Cars from the 1970s typically had mechanical systems, so they need to be converted to a semi-electronic or fully electronic system. However, not with this CDI. This CDI is specifically designed for motorcycles and cannot simultaneously handle the timing for four spark plugs.

This looks pretty cool. I could see it replacing the old oil bath ignition coil on an old engine. Might be more reliable than the chinese replacements.
It doesn't replace the ignition coil, it discharges capacitor into the coil instead of using just the points, I haven't looked closely at it but it looks to me like an electronic switch, not a capacitor discharge unit, because there is no high voltage generator. Usually there is a high voltage generator to charge the capacitor to several hundred volts which is then discharged into the ignition coil. In an ordinary ignition system the high voltage is generated by back emf and 'ringing' on the coil primary.
@@ericwillis777 I've measured back EMF on several bikes, it's usually around 320 volts. Electronic triggering without points is usually called a TPI system (no imagination in service manuals, Transistorised Pointless Ignition, first used by Suzuki marketing in 1970's)
I have a 50cc Piaggio 2 stroke engine fastened to my bench and use it for performance experiments as a retirement hobby. It uses a combined CDI/coil unit, I would like to fit a 12volt high performance HT coil from a car using the engines original trigger coil. I would like to use a 2N3055 for switching upto 7amps at 12 volts DC. My engine can rev up to 16000RPM using the standard AC magneto. Is there any chance of a suitable circuit diagram in a future video. Many thanks.

Hi my friend, I had many Dirt bike and motorcycle in the past , now I have four vintage bike; Honda CG 125, cb 250, XLR 250 ,wave 125 . In most CDI, AC, four wires are enough to start (input, output, negative, trigger), but one more wire can be added as a kill switch. Thanks you 🙏

This is a simple CDI and has a limited advance. To achieve a higher RPM, you need to make a more advanced version, which I will include in the new video to teach you how to make it.

Are you kidding? That's some of the shittiest solder work I've ever seen. Dry joints everywhere loose strands on wires and if you ever put this on a motorbike it will get shaken to bits. Oh the circuit schematic doesn't match the assembly, 4 wires built but only 2 connections in the diagram.

I used to have a CG 125 motorcycle, it's great,and Currently I also have the transistor(CDI)model of this motorcycle. I don't understand exactly what you mean, in this type of motorcycle, the ignition system is a contact breaker, and the AC power generated from the primary coil is only connected to the secondary coil by an ignition capacitor.Explain a little more about your problem, maybe I can help, But my advice to you is to change the ignition system to CDI, I did the same thing on my motorcycle, it is very convenient, but it requires replacing the electrical equipment.🙏

Yes there are some advantages, like increased efficiency and elimination of points 'bounce' but there is no high volage generation that I can see for charging a capacitor which then drives the primary of the ignition coil.
@1crazypj Well lots of equipment have capacitors - but I didn't realize the high voltage charge was derived from a magneto, otherwise there has to be a hv generation circuit.

Even though it's called flywheel magneto, it's really a dedicated charge coil supplying voltage to HT coil. Capacitor (Discharge Ignition - CDI) discharges into coil primary windings giving a very quick spike in secondary windings. It was used mainly on two stroke race bikes in 1970's as the fast rise time could fire spark plug when it wasn't ideal conditions (basically, points ignition had slower rise time so voltage could dissipate through carbon or excess gas/oil in cylinder)
To answer this question, you have to try it on your own motorcycle, performance may vary. But in general it can be suitable for single cylinder carbureted motorcycles with AC power, in fact this circuit is a cheap CDI, it may have some shortcomings. This is a simple and standard example, CDI racing has a higher rpm, and the ignition advance is less restricted as the rpm increases, but there is the possibility of damaging the valves and pistons, as the name suggests, for racing use. and prolonged use will cause damage🙏

Your motorcycle must be a CDI with two separate outputs for the ignition coil, (dtsi) and this CDI is designed for engines with a single spark plug.

Diagram is incorrect. Has 4 wires but you only show 2. Missing black (ground?) and K white should be connected to 12v?
