    NOTE:
There are other programs and methods out there. (Adobe Character Animator, for example.)
This workflow is not necessarily the most intuitive.
But this is the approach I LIKE and that I USE.
    SOFTWARE I USE:
    Inkscape, Edius, After Effects
You can use your preferred software.
    Download Inkscape here:
    inkscape.org/
    PROCESS I USE:
    - Draw a character on paper.
    - Get it into the computer. (Scan, digital photo, etc.)
    - Load image into InkScape and convert it into a vector ("ink lines").
    - Design mouth shapes (and eyes, etc.) in InkScape.
    - Export the character and mouth shapes as images (32-bit PNG).
    - In Edius (or any video editor), place mouth shapes on a video track above the character, in sync with the audio.
    - Export animation into After Effects for processing using these filters:
***** ROUGHEN EDGES - Applied to the "ink" layer.
(I mainly adjust Border, Edge Sharpness, and Scale.)
***** TURBULENT DISPLACE - On an overall Adjustment Layer:
(I mainly adjust Amount and Size.)
***** WIGGLE - For the moving paper, I just bring in a paper texture image and apply a WIGGLE expression.
(Example: "WIGGLE(12,1000)") To the paper layer, I apply a MOTION TILE effect and check "Mirror Edges".
    - POSTERIZE TIME: Set to 12 FPS. Applied to the final composition before rendering. (I usually put it all in a separate composition.)
For an exaggerated stop-motion look, try 8 FPS.
    - There are MANY things you can do to change this. Experiment with overlaying the ink layer onto the paper using "Linear Burn" or other overlay modes. Same thing for the color layer, if you have one - experiment with "Multiply" or "Color" overlay modes, to have it blend into the paper.

I doubt you’ll come back and read this, but I just want to say thanks for all that you’re putting out there, Crafsman. I’m a professor at a community college, and my favorite day of the semester these days in the Humanities class I teach is when I introduce my students to you. Anytime I’m only feeling and seeing the negative, destructive, divisive side of the internet, I can point to you for reassurance that the kind-hearted, childlike, inquisitive, creative folks outnumber and mean more than the selfish, childish, obstinate, destructive folks in our world. I’m so grateful that you share what you do with us with the style and heart that you put into it. All the years of geeking out over this stuff is really coming into it’s own in what you’re making and who you’re reaching. Congrats and, once more, thanks.

I remember a long time ago, watching a show about Jim Henson, and he mentioned the one way to make the puppets feel more real was to make sure they were always moving. In some ways I envy you. More specifically, I envy the times that you have chosen to practice this craft. I became interested in it at a time when the available tools consisted of Granddad's 8mm (single frame capable) movie camera, a drawing table your Dad helped you build with frosted glass and a couple of florescent lights mounted underneath, a reel to reel tape recorder you delivered morning news papers for two years to be able buy from Sears, and your Mom yelling at you at 3 in the morning to quit making noises, turn out the lights and go to bed because tomorrow was a school day. I actually did go to college for it, but the tools, although more professional and expensive, were no more sophisticated than what I had used as a teenager. Anyway, these are great video "tutorials" I just discovered today. I'm going to have fun watching your archives.

@@TheCrafsMan thanks for your reply comment. Yes , I go through phases with animation, like you I always come back to it in one form or another. I have toonboom studio for along time and after watching this video I think I want to try some of your effects technique. As always I really enjoy your productions !

Well, you did it again, you floored me, I actually downloaded this and I’m going to try and take as many notes as I can to try animation again, I have the updated version of procreate with the animation feature and my first attempt was the bouncing ball and, well, it was more of a deflated ball, I guess I was a little too and I put it aside until I gained some courage to have a go at it again, so here I am. I won’t give up, I know it take some time to get the hang of this, again the thing I like about your videos is that you keep thing’s simple and you look for other ways if it doesn’t work the first time around, thanks again and keep SteadyCraftin 👍🏻

I think what people are forgetting is that this only works until you want to rotate the character/ camera, make him move his arms (If he has any), in front of his body, maybe cross over another character in the background.
At that point you would definetly need to redraw the figure for every few frames, since distortion can only get you so far.
Still a reaaally cool video, will try this out myself, have a lot of doodles that this could work with! :D

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  4 года назад +2

Some good points there! It makes me want to do a more immersive 3D version, but keeping the effect.
I've experimented with a "paper character" in a real world. The idea being that he's always flat, and poses only read when facing the camera... if he turns sideways, he basically disappears. :D But this is good stuff to think about!

While I don't plan on animating I do really like how you come across and try your best to make it user friendly for everyone, you're using programs that are free and you're showing us how to get the most out of the "older" and free programs. Never animated but I was with you on all the stuff you were doing. So thanks crafsman, you're a real G.

I liked this video so much, I clicked the "thumbs up" button five times.
One time for Keith Lango, who inspired me so much when I was first wanting to get into animation.
    One time for talking Vegetables.
One time because I saw my old animation book that I lost somewhere in storage.
One time because CrafsMan has inspired me to want to start animating again.
And one time because I really liked the video.
I would have probably clicked it a few more times, but that was already a lot of clicking and I needed to keep my clicking finger fresh for other things that I need to click on elsewhere.

Only discovered your videos today and I'm an instant fan. RUclips and Patreon aren't perfect platforms, but I LOVE that people are finding ways through them to make it possible to do more of what they're passionate about -- and then the rest of us get to go along for the ride. I'm so curious about EVERYTHING, and collect hobbies like mad, but there are only so many hours in the day! And when you create things, you never know what random activity or skill is going to turn out to be useful to some other activity, skill, or project, you know? Even if I never animate anything, I feel like watching this video stretched my understanding of ways to solve creative problems, in ways I might not have considered if I hadn't watched it. It's so useful. (And interesting!) I'm so glad I stumbled over this channel.

Craftsman I just found you... standing ovation from me. You said so much about so many things in this video. The presentation is phenomenal. The soul shines. The history of a dream saved away and returned to. The relationship with the wife. The process. The stick-to-it to integrate new technology platforms. My grandfather who served in ww2 used to always say two things to me.... work simplification and economy. Great stuff sir😁

How you used to animate with drawing multiple drawings on paper is what I used to do too! I as well need to get back into animating, especially now that you showed how you can get that jittery motion on after effects (I'm more a fan of that than the clean computer animations, but I still appreciate it). That looks like a life and time saver!

Mr. Crafsman, I love your channel and everything you put up here. My brother and I quote your Fred’s light saber video ALL THE TIME. I still feel like coupons are for the given recipient but that’s just me. I just want to say, I love your videos and I love the style you bring to your videos and the self awareness you demonstrate on a regular basis that just intensifies the style of your videos. When I watch a Crafsman video I feel like a friend started a channel and I’m over here goin “haha there he go again doin that thing he does”, even though I have never met you. That’s obvious but I feel like I should let you know that when you tell us, the audience, that you love us, that you should know that we love you back. We really do, Crafsman. I can’t speak for the rest of the audience here, but my browser corrects craftsman to Crafsman, and that’s because I love you, and we love you, Crafsman. Please, by any means, keep steady craftin!
