You've got wrong flight number in your video title. Looks like it should be flight 5390. It's ship 111. Don't confuse people.
I enjoy when all the actors look directly into the camera. I assume this was a precursor for characters like Deadpool breaking the fourth wall as well. 😂😅
@@creativegirl9710dude be nice it was just a mistake

Copilot did great! He saved everyone on board. Also the flight crew were so dedicated in trying to get the captain back in. This entire crew was rock solid!
The copilot must’ve been traumatized so deeply to not participate in this documentary. I don’t blame him because he went through something so extreme and so dramatic. This memory will never be forgotten and can scar you for life without the proper support. Even the chief stewardess admits to it that he will never forget this and the feeling will never go away for as long as he lived.
They’re heroes in the end and gets all the praises. The flight crew in the sky are like the fire fighters down below. Each does their best to protect human lives in the air and on land.
Glory be to God the Almighty for doing his mercy for serving them.❤❤❤
Did the Captain live
The pilot should have been buckled in, period.
@@ingridmaier8446 Thankfully, yes.
@@ingridmaier8446 Were you afraid to watch? The narration misleads the audience until the plane is safely down. I hate when shows do that. Just tell what happened. Don't over-dramatize things. This story had enough drama to begin with!

Disregard this comment I didn’t watch the whole thing before making it🫡
I hope someday they will . Christopher Nolan being the director of course! 😊❤
i think thwre is a movie called THE CAPTAIN. based on this
Absolutely terrific flying by the co pilot, what a way to introduce yourself to a new crew lol. The fact the captain even survived much less didn’t have any real major injuries is absolutely surreal.
No 'lol'! Serious incident! & lol is trite; Now we just say, "ha!"

Oh my god, I can’t imagine what it was like for the copilot. Captain laying outside the Plane. Being held by his legs. Especially for the crew members to hold on for dear life. It’s a miracle the pilot survived.
I remember watching this ep for the first time, and my jaw was literally on the floor hearing about the pilot. Bless that co-pilot and the flight attendants.
Seriously! Me too😮
Really? Literally?
Major props to the co-pilot for having to do something extraordinary while keeping himself composed and focused until landing (probably at least partly attributed to adrenaline).
Amazing that the captain only sustained such minor injuries after that ordeal.
Also, props to the ATC and crew for working together to get the plane down and keeping a hold on the captain.
Rest in peace captain 🙏🙏😭😭😭

Wow, amazing the captain survived! He definitely had angels watching over him. God bless the first officer who safely landed the aircraft as well.
Copilot did awesome. And the actor who played him - WOW
Had me forgetting it was a reenactment.
This happened in real life
@@sandratibbetts4196 damn I didn’t realize
That pilot is *BUILT DIFFERENT*
The reaction of the co-pilot after landing is common with many first responders as well. During the actual crisis, training and knowledge take over, usually with a hefty rush of adrenaline, and it's all business. Until the crisis has passed, or you're relieved from your participatiin in the crisis. Then there's an adrenaline crash. Even ifbyou arent necessarily upset or scared during the event, the crash renders most shaking and emotional. I'm shocked at the outcome! Amazing that all survived.
The thing that strikes me the most is how humble each of these people are about what they went through and the fact that they saved so many lives that day due to all of their experience and team work!
Rest of the crew deserves a great applause for holding on to the pilot body
i clapped during the entire video
I must agree Manoj M

The copilot deserves applause too for handling the situation perfectly and landing the plane
That copilot is a hero!! I hope someone lets him know that. He kept a calm head and got everyone down safely. I’m sure it must’ve been so traumatizing for him.
He was amazing 👍
Yeah I hope he sees this at least, he was a real hero, he did what most probably wouldn't have been able to. All the love to him ❤
one of the best co pilots I have ever witnessed. all thanks to the first officer/co pilot
The fact that he lived is insane, people have died doing much much less lol
He was a miracle case Lee Hall
He kept himself together.

Ugghh YOU spoilt it 😢
I don’t understand the lol, because it was not funny what they went through
@@joymichaels168 stop being a big baby it’s just a word.
there are people who die each year from falling out of their beds. it's amazing that Tim, the pilot, survived that.
Everyone involved was wonderful. From keeping the passengers from panicking to the controller supporting the co-pilot in his fear
What an amazing story a testament to the skill of the co-pilot. To do what he did with such great skill under the most difficult of circumstances - lack of pressure, lack of oxygen - all the fog in the cockpit, and the shock of the incident, the responsibility all suddenly shifted to his shoulders alone to save all souls on board, was nothing short of miraculous. Bravo, Allister! Bravo!
This first officer was amazing huge props to him he was able to fly the plane and make an emergency landing with the instructions from ATC. Also the flight crew did a great job they were highly experienced. I am so proud of the crew of British airways flight 111!
The co pilot flew the plane not the first officer but nice comment!
I cannot possibly imagine being the ground controller at the airport hearing the first officer tell me that the captain is half outside the aircraft, and believed to be dead
i'm glad they kept ahold of the capn...and that co pilot deserves a flying metal every day!!!
I heard the story with tears. God bless the pilots and the passengers.
Btw wow props to the actors in this re enactment they did so amazing
I never repaired planes but when I heard the engineer did not feel the need to check the library for the right screw…. I screamed. I repair electronics and even something as small as using the wrong size screw causes issues. And he did it on the plane and apparently the person before him did similar mistakes too. 💀 Luckily no one died but omg….. don’t shortcut something that is responsible for the safety of people. Please. 😓
Thank you for standing up speaking out for what is right!!! ❤
He was told that the ones he wanted were the wrong size. He should have listened. And the one who told him they were the wrong size should have made him listen, made sure he listened. That's implicit In any job involving safety, it requires careful adherence to regulations and specs. That is the whole point of the job.
@@sharonrogers6541 fair enough but that engineer thought he knew more than the other fellow. A bit big for his britches.
I hope he was fired and that BA completely upgraded their training procedures.
That must have been horrifying ,I’m so glad the pilot survived and doing well
What a miracle. Captain flying out and his legs pushing the controls into maximum nose dive as he got sucked out also helped to lower the plane quickly to Oxygen altitudes before the Co Pilot passed out. The level of team work is amazing as the controls needed to be freed and the Co Pilot needed to keep aviating, navigating and communicating under duress. Wow Wow Wow
Yeah Rigjt Woweeeeee..!!!😘😗😗😘
Bloody remarkable story. Love how the captain came back to life!
UNBELIEVABLE this is a true MIRACLE ❤
Bless dear Alastair for his holding it together, the crew who worked as a real team, and the captain, who in spite of all odds, lived to fly another day - all heroes!
I was an aircraft mechanic in the navy when I fixed or replaced anything we had quality control that check your work before it was signed off
My dad survived a mid air collision and went on to have 6 kids. Miracles do happen! God tests us in extreme ways.
sounds like your dad has a very interesting story of his own. glad he made it!
Lmfaoooooo😂
Don’t be ridiculous! This wasn’t an act of “God!” It was the act of bad maintenance crew not doing their jobs and screwed up securing the window by not fixing it correctly! The crew saved these people! Not your fake floating man in the sky!
Did your dad have 6 kids all on his own or did your mother do the carrying laboring and feeding? Not sure God has anything to do with this whether testing or benevolence.
Co-pilot Alastair - what a shining superstar hero! An incredible feat of focus and determination by him. And the bravery and humanity shown by the crew who battled to save their captain - it is absolutely jaw dropping. Well done you magnificent men. I trust that the trauma of the day has now departed from your lives. The sky gods were smiling on you, may you reap the rewards in your lives that are rightfully yours and richly deserved.
The trauma is still there... must be hard to deal with.
Wow!! What a co-pilot. The pilot and co-pilot are blessed. I'm in shock the pilot lived
Incredibly quick thinking from the crew, that's remarkable they could figure out solutions in such a short time and such a chaotic situation
Natural teacher! Such a big heart Kyle. Love watching you as I can relate to it all. 9 year widow with young child. 39 year loss of my Mom, I will see her in heaven not too long from now. Life is short live it with love, joy and compassion!
The bolts should be colour coded and stamped to avoid similar errors.
And you can't just eyeball the bolts either like this "engineer" did.
Having a pilot as a father, who flew in the II WW US Navy, and years commercial flights, even though I’m so familiar with the whole training, maintenance and safety issues - it’s unbelievably amazing!
Out of all the mayday air crash episodes this one is one of a few that sticks out the most to me. I cannot understand how the pilot survived... I guess he's tough as nails. Like one of the other crew members said I would have never made it...there's no way
My very favorite too!
Because of GOD
I couldn't even handle sticking my head out the window at 60 mph as a kid... idk how the pilot survived at hundreds of mph faced up.
This! I skydived once, many years ago. When you're dropping it's really fast, it's a horrible feeling, I couldn't breathe. It was like claustophobia. So that's what I was remembering watching this video and you know it was so much worse for that pilot. That's why he couldn't blink. Your face can't move. I couldn't breathe or blink.
He mentioned he turned his head to the side and he could see the tail of the plane.
The co pilot is insanely smart and handled the situation perfectly. I cried watching with amazement and relief although it was a rein-action of the event.❤
The fact that they stayed so calm is insane
I am so glad there was no loss of life. Thank God.
Nothing short of a miracle!
As someone said, the copilot was amazing. Amazing. And the cabin crew thank God for them.
So many hero’s in this story. I hope the 😊co-pilot did not get PTSD, if he did it is understandable. Having healed from PTSD myself, I would tell him that the horror fades with time and with faith in a higher power. Happy the pilot survived!
Why don’t 51:48 we just say God? He is the “higher power”, “the man upstairs”, etc.
@@stephannielee2182 because not everyone shares your beliefs.
The thing that stands out the most and I mean kudos for saving the passengers, but saving the captain to me is beyond top notch. Completely outstanding from top to bottom.
The screws failed, but the crew didn’t.
We were taught in nursing school that a patient isn't dead until they're warm and dead, and the faster their body temp is lowered the better their chances of survival. The fact that the Captain of that flight survived is nothing short of a miracle. God bless those crew men who held him so he didn't go all the way out the cockpit window. God bless the co-pilot. Heroes one and all.
I can't believe that the captain survived this ordeal! The fact that he had the fortitude under such horrific conditions to turn his face towards the air flow to breathe in the oxygen is just amazing and no doubt played a major role in his survival!! The co-pilot flying the plane by himself was nothing short of unbelievable!! The flight stewards, believing their captain was dead (and who could blame them under those extreme circumstances), holding onto his 'body' for dear life in order to avoid a worse catastrophe did a remarkable job!! The fact that the captain not only survived but without major injury is nothing short of a miracle!!! While that was shocking enough him going back to flying 5 months after the accident...I have no words!! I know God works in mysterious ways but this goes beyond!! There must have been a lot of guardian angels working that flight!!
Imagine how traumatizing it must be to know 81 people + coworkers life is on your single hand and how well you perform it.
The way they revealed that the pilot didn’t actually die was NUTs
Agreed. Even more nuts was that he just went back to being a pilot. I would have taken that as an omen and quickly retired. 😱🫣
Wow that's incredible, as a former flight attendant everyone on that crew is hero. Had one person panic it could have ended so differently. We had one of our planes almost crash into a mountain as it lost the number one engine and didnt have the power to make it over it. There were 11 crew members on the flight only one continued flying. Its remarkable that you all went back to work after something like that.
"British Airways Flight 5390 was a flight from Birmingham Airport in England for Málaga Airport in Spain. On 10 June 1990, the BAC One-Eleven 528FL suffered an explosive decompression. While the aircraft was flying over Didcot, Oxfordshire, an improperly installed windscreen panel separated from its frame, causing the captain to be partially ejected from the aircraft. He was held in place through the window frame for 20 minutes until the first officer landed at Southampton Airport."

It just goes too show that the SMALLEST mistakes can lead to catastrophic tragedy when it comes too aviation and it's engineering. In other words, their is no "cutting corners" when it comes to how these planes are put together.
Yes and no. While the direct cause of the incident is the small mistake, the more underlying problem is the design of the window. Most panel fittings, be it door or window, are plug types fitted from the inside specifically so that even if all fastening fails, it will have a chance to remain (and also just less stress on the fittings in general). The corner cutting started long before the maintenance.
Nothing small about this mistake. Eyeballing parts for a moped would be reckless, but parts to an airplane, absolutely insane.
@@justanoman6497 Well yea, it's poor design, but it doesn't change the fact that the guy doing the maintenance apparently thought he was working on a model plane and it wouldn't matter what parts he used.
Most of these stories are because of errors caused by humans. This one was by the mechanic, who had plenty of time to get the correct bolts. He just didn't because of laziness and it was dark.
My nephews don't know the difference between a flat, Phillips or how to change their oil or a tire. I was raised in the 90s and these kids now wouldn't last a day without wifi. I'm scared to see the future problems due to their negligence.
I would have had to retire. Wow. Angels watched over him that day. I am so glad the crew didn't let go. They would have never forgiven themselves.
Who could survive that. Unbelievable! Wow I am truly amazed
Respect to the determination of everyone and not giving up.
Incredible story, incredible people. So happy everyone survived this harrowing flight.
The captain is indeed a man of steel
The most amazing save of a life I have ever seen. Kudos to all involved. Captain Tim You are one tough Brit.
OK NAH WHEN HE SAID THAT THE CAPTIN SURVIVED I WAS IN PURE SHOCK NO WAY
Incredible their stories are coming out now! These people were a part of making history! I’m not complaining about any delays at the airport anymore after watching this.. I would rather people be working more to get things done right than to just keep on the go- without paying attention to these details we aren’t ever aware of what could be going on when the airport be taking hella long nowadays
I was a flight attendant for 24 years and I have never experienced anything near this. The maximum I have experienced was a fire in the cabin and landing after dumping fuel and landing with tires that exploded on takeoff. Those were easy compared to this, obviously. I cannot believe that he lived. I do not blame this on the mechanic though.
It was the engineer's fault for sure. He freely admitted using the wrong bolts.
Alister did good he reacted so well there's no telling how many lives he saved
For every mistake made, there are lessons learnt. But some mistakes are very priceless.
Human body is amazing. Really happy captain made it.
It is common for mechanics to compare new bolts with old ones visually.. Diameter, thread, it shows clearly holding it to the light. Of course, if the bolts removed are of the wrong kind, which was the case, chances are a mechanic will indeed replace the old wrong ones with new wrong ones... I kind of feel for the guy, he thought he was absolutely doing the right thing.
Agree. He has to live with it & I can't imagine that pressure. Hope he is ok as well.
I to feel bad for the mechanic. He really thought he was doing right and went to great lengths to get the same. No one would intentionally do wrong but so many other factors, late night and cramped working spaces, poor lighting, etc. Mechanics really need the best working conditions to do their job right and usually don’t. So much depends on their work.
The fact that if he didn't tilt his face to be able to catch his breath he would've probably died
It must have been an oversite that the EMERGENCY PROCEDURE MANUAL didnt have a section titled PILOT HALF OUT THE WINDSHIELD.
Hoping the omission was rectified by now😂
Manual blew out the window anyway
Thanks for making this documentary, this is such an amazing and inspiring story. Hats off to the entire crew, and in particular to Alastair Atchison! Not to minimise the work of any of the others, but dang, Cpt Atchison!...You are in the same class as Cpt Sully.

Holy Cow . that poor pilot. what a hero
i have watched so many episodes of mayday but this one made my jaw drop! when you find up he survived !!
Thank be to GOD the captain lived also for the co-piolet saving all the lives
Absolutely terrifying. They were so brave!
I was literally crying for that captain.... it was so brutal but God had some other plans for him... it's only the God that kept him alive ❤ salute to the co pilot and crews as well ❤
his mayday cries gave me the chills
This must be the most terrifying experience for anyone especially the captain himself to happen onboard any airplane. It’s absolutely miraculous that he survived, thanks to his copilot who stepped up and saved everyone’s lives no matter what. That copilot is a tried and true hero! Also big credits to the medical team who saved the captain’s life when it was thought he was dead. I also didn’t know Southampton UK even had an airport, I worked on a cruise liner that went from there to the Mediterranean every 2 weeks and they flew me home from Heathrow airport after my contract ended.
Southampton does short hops, like a couple of hours away. You were probably going to Manila or just a different international location.
I learned as an EMT that the patient isn’t dead until they are warm and dead, and to treat as such.
Those flight attendants have courage. unconcerned for their own safety to take care ofothers.
To God be the glory, though I wouldn’t blame any of the cabin crew if they said “I think I’ll take a desk job!”
An incredible story, but unfortunately other planes have crashed because of mechanics working on them didn't do the right thing, or took shortcuts that caused an incident.

Why did the stewardass actually tell a passenger the PILOT was dead or may be dead??
That was absolutely sure to put the whole plane on total panic. 😂😖
Well surely they would have thought that the copilot was now in charge.
Simply amazing story! ❤
This would make for a brilliant movie!
The co-pilot Allistair Atchinson deciding not to release the captain was a perfect decision. He saved his life AND his passengers! The man is a hero!!! His bravery and the incident itself was unprecedented! ❤
There are differences between the Royal Air Force trainees and the co-pilot such as; their adrenaline wasn't in full force and they did not face the fear factor of dying like the co-pilot faced.
Kudos to the stewards and co pilot who fought hard to save the captain and passengers nice ending
Just imagine the pilot flying out of the window. It's so unreal.
Wow! Amazing how well trained everyone was & that the pilot survived. It was not their time to go!
That poor steward really does look shell shocked. He was very brave but it came at a high price.
That bloody co-pilot should've been knighted by the Queen. My humble opinion, of course. Blessings to the entire crew.
Oh my God! My heart goes out to everyone.
Wow !!unbelievable the captain lived!!!!
It’s honestly crazy how the captain got sucked out and was hanging out of the window only supported by just his legs but they were still able to land the plane safely
The crews were real heroes
Co pilot and captain deserves highest award in aviation
@@tradebayerr the captain might not qualify for that, since he spent most of it knocked out, but iirc the copilot definitely got a very high award for his part 🎉
