When it comes to Landing I find the Kamikaze method be the most simplistic and straightforward
Fox 4 the runway, never fails.
As I've been learning to fly and fight on DCS the past year i have watched many videos from some pretty class flyers but these are still my favourite to learn from. Reason being, your not afraid to put up things that are not perfect but show the basics well. Make me feel less frustrated when i try. Keep it up Cap.
Thanks Sir
I’m not sure if you feel this way, but definitely don’t feel bad about not knowing exactly how to do it while you’re showing us. As a training professional I’ve found that people who are fairly new to a subject make the best teachers because the basics are so new to them that they don’t view it as basic if that makes sense. Someone who has been doing it for a long time usually forgets to mention the little details because they are so second mature to them that they don’t even think of them as part of procedure, but rather as common sense that they don’t deem to be worth covering because “everyone should know it”. You did a great job in this video and it was very clear how to complete these procedures. My only wish is that you had shown plotting the waypoints on the map as well. Thank you for your fantastic videos!
27:45 the pure calmness of an entire chaotic situation has me dying, "ive lost the glide slope indicator, idk what that beeping means, glide slope is back ive compensated, ive stalled"
Just stumbled onto this video. I rear RDW's comments below and thought that I would add to his excellent work. Greetings. As a real world pilot I found DCS most interesting when I first stumbled on to it. One of my first modules was the F15C. I was disappointed to learn that there were no In cockpit nav aids available and other than dead reckoning, my only other resource for navigating was via waypoints I created in the Mission Editor. Then I discovered that when I went to select ILS mode that the actual frequency tuned was usually nowhere near my airport of intended landing.
I over came this by building an initial approach fix and a final approach fix for my arrival airport. Since I knew via my flight planning what the heading and distance from those fixes should be to my landing waypoint which I placed on the touchdown zone of the runway, I could tell immediately if the sim had selected the correct ILS frequency.
I set target altitude crossings for the initial approach fix and the final approach fixes based on terrain elevation along the final approach course which allowed me to 1) begin to slow to approach configuration speeds and be at an altitude so that I could intercept the glide slope from beneath. In other words, I would be slowing to flap and gear speeds in level flight while the glide slope descends to my current level flight altitude. That way, I would join the glideslope on speed in the landing configuration. I planned those altitudes so that I would fly the glide slope on a 3 to 1 profile. So, three miles from the end of the touchdown zone of the runway you I would be 1000 feet above the touchdown zone elevation of the runway. I just built the approach so I could fly it just the way I do in the real world.
I enjoy your work and I thought I would throw this out there for consideration for all. Sorry to get so wordy.
Not sure if you make vids on youtube, but could you make one on this? lol
Thanks for the tip boss... you are both a credit to this community.
I cna't figure out how to change the frequency to the ILS of the airport. This video just says it happens "automatically". Not sure how that's possible unless you pre-plan it all. I'm just trying to setup the ILS while in-flight
@27:50 That low pitch beeping sound is the first ILS beacon sound feedback. When you're on final approach, you'll fly over two ILS radio stations aligned with the runway (of course, since they're ILS stations) that will help guiding you on your final approach.
The first one is located somewhere around 3 to 4 miles away from the runway threshold, it broadcasts this tone to your onboard ILS reciever to indicate you're roughly at that distance from the runway. The second one is much closer to the threshold (if I remember correctly, it's located 1 mile away from the runway) and it also broadcasts a unique tone, which you can hear @28:15, to indicate the final moments before touchdown - or your final chance to go around if you miss the approach.
Affirm thx
That beep is the Outer Marker. The Inner Marker is the next beep with a higher pitch.
You are alive and the aircraft in one piece, that's a good landing to me. I love the F-15C, damn
Eagle*
DCS is my first sim. I just started. Your videos are very useful to someone with zero experience in aviation.
If you set the last waypoint in the mission editor on the field and type to landing, then the change from nav to ils will be the selected field and you won’t have to measure distances on the map to find the right one. Do remember that it will navigate to the initial approach fix and then down the glide slope. For smooth instrument flying when you have a significant turn onto final it’s good to not fly directly to and overfly the fix or you’ll overshoot the coarse, but rather to fly offset so a smooth (30 degree bank) turn will align you with the final coarse as you cross it. Instrument flying takes a bit of practice :)
thx
On the final approach you will get 2different peeping signals, the first peeping is, and you will heart that in navmode, its the so called "outer marker" that meant that the threshold is usually 4 to 7 miles away, the second peeping, different tone from the first "noise" is the so called "inner marker"0,5 to 0,7 nm from the threshold.
DON'T chase the LOC. Intercept at 30 degree angle. Be aware of wind drift!
Slow down to max gear down speed -10 or so. GS alive, gear down. GS at half-way down, flaps 1. GS 1/2 dot above, reduce power to descend. Use this formula for desc rate: gnd spd*10/2=descent rate. Eg. 180Kts*10=1800,/2=900. Descent=900fpm.
As you slow on the glideslope, rate of descent slows. At 1000 agl, be on a stable approach and FULLY configured. Learn approx power setting for descent. Pitch+Power=Performance.
Love all your DCS videos, thank you for doing these!
Course is your track from A to B. Your heading is the correction taking account of wind speed & direction.
I was chuckling pretty hard as you were going into the landing even though you are 100% a better pilot and navigator than me. I landed the F-15C in a complete whiteout yesterday despite not knowing how to read the instruments or HUD, solely relying on the map. I'm ashamed that it's my best landing so far haha. Anyways, thank you for all the tutorials. The're fantastic.
There is two things I want to correct Cap on....an ILS signal is 4 times as sensitive as the standard course deviation from way point to way point. That means if your HSI shows you 20 degrees left or right at full deflection it now only shows you 5 degrees. It's a lot harder to stay centered.
Second...as a rule of thumb you calculate 60 feet per degree per mile of distance. So if your 10 miles out and on a 3 degree glide slope. At 10 miles you should be about 1800 feet above touch down zone elevation.
thx
The Beeps you heard are there to tell you how far from the runway treshold you are even if you have 0 visibility. It consists of two beacons, i belive the first (the slow beeps) is 2 nm from the runway and the second one (the fast beeps indicating the short final) is 0.5 Nm. If you want a Good landing, you SHOULD be on slope, speed and course when you hear the short final alarm. You saved the landing quite nicely tho :)
Wow, you have come far. I love watching your current videos of simulating battles, and you actually got me interested in DCS. I've been buying modules recently, and have recently bought the F-15C. I can now come to your channel for tutorials and fun simulations. Thanks!
ILS landing not only give the slope, but also has distance markers to show how close you are getting to the runway. The first low-sound beeping (27:48) is the outer marker, the second sound is the middle marker (28:17). By the time you hit middle marker, you need to be basically 100% aligned... otherwise you should declare missed landing. Another tip is to not worry too much about being above glideslope, worry more about alignment, and definitely DO NOT go below glideslope if possible. My only question is - does the plane have ILS approach autopilot?
btw - you came in way too fast
The vertical and horizontal lines on your hud and ADI are your flight director, also known as command bars. they are not a CDI and is maybe why you are having trouble. its a pitch and bank your flight computer has calculated for you to follow to intercept and fly a course or altitude. just bank until the line is centered in the ball/ Flight path vector and hold it through roll out and the same with your pitch. thats all there is too it.
Just getting into DCS and the F15c in particular. Very good video Cap many thanks chap. Very, very helpful.
Too funny!! Well done, I was on the edge of my seat
That was actually a pretty nice landing for a first timer in Instrument Landings, with an awesome save at the end. =)
Another great video, Been playing DCS for just shy of a week & you're tutorials have helped me loads with this particular aircraft, I've pretty much learnt everything I need to know about the F-15C with help of yourself, plus all this whilst I'm using a Ps4 controller 😂
Great content dude
Hello reapers, nice instruction. after you turn from wp 2 to the ils initial point the adf show a cdl off heading and marking in hud. if youlook at adf you will see a red dot.that dot, the off flag will turn visual if you past a waypoint. normally you may navigate from vor to vor as long you are on a curse, radia,l to the vor in reality it will show the "to flag" if you go past the vor indipendingly where, the red flag the "off flag will indicate that you go past the vor.
That landing was intense .....That was all most to exciting for tutorial video ...:D ...
I am guessing in some ways might have been more easy to ignored ILS Angle gone in low try to time the throttle just so you can see runway ..just in those unusual conditions
Hello Reapers! As usual, it's a very usefull video! Thanks a lot.
Just a little comment (I can obviously be wrong).
All my apologise for my english and mistakes (I'm french...).
At Min 23:30 you describe the ADI yellow needles as localizer and glide indicators. As far as I know this is more like FLIGHT DIRECTOR lines. Indeed, when you adjust your roll for instance, you can see the wellow vertical line moving instantaneously accordind to your roll action. The Flight Director (same as on the HUD) gives you (or autopilote) the required action on pitch and roll to get back on the loc and glide. It doesn't tells you if your on glide on track, but what is the required action to do so.
Nevertheless, we can see that the course line on the HSI gives you the ILS Track (automatically the the airfield selected) and the deviation barre gives you the distance (in degree) from the actual ILS track. This helps a lot the pilote for his mental postioning (Am I left or right of the track for instance). This gives you distance tendency instead of direct order. It's easyer.
I haven't tryed yet, but it seems that the glide indication is missing on the HSI. Of course i'm not sur as i'm unfortunately not a F-15 pilot... ;-). So, we have no choice to follow the flight director as you did.
You can also notice (as you mentioned) that, once you select your ILS mode, the system steers you to a initial (aligned) point, and the HSI is already set on the ILS course. While closing this initial point, the HSI deviation line tells you when you will be aligned. This allows you to anticipate the final turn. The better its aligned the smaller will be your corrections.
Once again thanks a lot for all your tutorials which helps me a lot for Sensors and armament.
Regards.
The landing was really painful to watch lmao, Good tutorial to send to my friend who is about to start playing DCS with the F15 for the introduction module for him
Thank You Cap! after watching this was able to pull off my first ILS landing :)
Well done!
nice save at the end Cap!
Great timing. I was looking into these topics just today. Thank you for your vid! Nice sudden landing too!!!
Parabéns, seu vídeo foi instrutivo e emocionante, melhor parte foi quando a pista apareceu na sua frente. Gratidão🙏 me salvou. Um abraço do Brasil👍
Learned more in that video than all the others thanks cap
lol thx
Left Alt + C ! Damn I never knew that one for the cursor I've always thought it was not possible in FC3 aircraft. Cheers Cap
lol np
Don't confuse it with Left Ctl + C...
Beautiful work my guy that was tense in that white out. Got me wanting to play bad now. :). Love ya bud.
it seems if you DONT follow the course line to waypoint 2, it will NOT automatically
switch to ILS.
ie, if you want to skip and go straight for emergency landing, you need to get close to waypoint 2 then turn on ILS.
this was what happened to Helo Hunter mission for F15
Very good video. As WAGS explained in a comment to a previous video, at 10nm out you should be at 3000 feet above runway elevation. Thus, already at about 12-13 nm you should be at (in this case) 4000 feet and keeping that altitude until the glide slope indicator comes down to the center - then you shall follow it. This means that already before the 10nm distance you should be trimmed and stabilised on the course line. Minor details, but still rather important. Could I suggest some missions with the same clouds, where you need to follow course lines (SAMs) and aiming at bombing a specified point at the ground. (That might also help the Harrier and A10 pilots to keep out of range of AAA).
Roger cam
I was with you all the way, Brilliant !
im instrument rated i didnt use the ils i just used the map and my altitude, altitude AGL of the runway, and my attitude coordinator that was hard but fun : P btw i was in VR so I got to feel the panic of being near the floor but I kept a good monitor of my Altitude
I was checking for ForeFlight and I can’t find the plates. It also doesn’t look like I can add the fixes should I always expect vectors to final ?
I bought the mirage 2000 few days ago and i noticed that you can do the alignment without do anything if you create missions with the editor. The only thing you must do is to check the square box from the "settings" called "enforce alignment"
thx
Thanks, Cap. Things that seem at first complicated become easier with practice, always. Best, Pete.
what if you don't program anything in the mission editor before flight ?? do the waypoints take you to base ? how do you RTB (before getting ILS signal) ?
Thanks Cap another nice training video
My nav mode recognises that I've passed waypoints, however the F10 map keeps showing a dotted line towards waypoint 1 instead of waypoint 2??
well done Cap.
Hey all dcs waypoints have alt settings. Look to artificial horizon. And no flying right on course is difficult
They should make a high fidelity model for the F-15C
What are those red markers mean on ADI? Seems they appear when landing is that some sort warning indicator?
I know it's long shot, but do you think you could do an INS and ILS video covering the F15-E module? @grimreapers ?
Does the false glide slope appear if your too high ? Can you load up your missed approach?
so i'm curious. If I'm just flying around on a server, how do you know which destination your HSI is set to? Lately, I just open the map and measure the distance from my current location to the center of the airfield I'm trying to go to and then "flip" through the course and mileage choices on the HSI until I find one close to where I'm headed. Just wondering if there is an easier way to do all that? Maybe I'm missing something.
Ri0tz I do it like that as well. But I'd also like to know if there is an easier way...
@@olivertv6175 there isn't as far as I know
High speed! 700 words by second.
Very useful as always.
Would be great to see Mission Tutorial in F15c ...as in start mission with everything talk through take off ..the nav ..engage targets ..return and land ...that was everything we learn in these videos ..but this time the final Mission video is bringing all those together to complete a goal .....
Id love that because then i could follow that mission video step by step and pause ..and this way have great idea understanding of how it all comes together in order to complete a mission
Mssion video time break down into 10mins take off ..10mins nav to mission ..5 enegaging target ..10 mins return and land ....35min video in total ....
Roger Interesting
I wonder if the HSI is calculating a course from waypoint 2 to the 10 mile marker, while the hud and azumith are calculating the path from the plane to the 10 mile marker. You were far off to the right of the line between 2 and 10 mile as the HSI suggested
side note though, great job of explaining it, terrible job of following your own advice at the end there lol thank you :P
Great :) Thanks for help
My first landing with the F-15 I made a perfect landing but came away with a popped tire
-I’m playing with keyboard rn gonna get a joystick in a few days I’ve got no idea how to even set a waypoint which is why I just had to guess by the map where I was heading ended well but still I don’t get this one bit I literally just want to know which button to set a waypoint and where on like the radar it should show
I've just started doing the generic F-15C campaign and it seems that my Nav waypoints in the missions never seem to progress....i end up having to always manually advance them. Is there a 'bug' or am i missing something. I'm certain that i've passed directly across the waypoints but the HUD never advances them. Only through the first two campaign missions at the moment. Great video btw! Been watching GR videos for the past few days now. :)
Actually how to make this 'final point' orange circle show up on the map?
Same question here. Did you ever figure it out?
Great vid, subbed!
Mate, you pointed out everything that can go Pete Tong which is good, we all need to know what can go tits up, I'd say very few of us wannabe pilots can get it right and to perfection first time around, If you can walk away it's job done :) Great Vid
lol thx
I'm in the process of learning now with x56 and Rift S. How do you easily find the right keyboard keys when needed? Do you peek through your nose? Seems pretty immersion breaking.
I don't use VR.
@@grimreapers ohh. So your x56 binds won't be the best for vr use?
I don't know if you actually corrected it or not, but I keep on hearing you refer the cue on the HUD as 'course deviation' similar to the one on the HSI. It's not. The one on the HUD is the steering cue to the course correction. If you're off course, the steering cue will show you where to turn to get back on course. Basically, if you always keep it centered on VV you will be on course. That's why sometimes the cue on the HUD is not showing what the HSI do. It's not showing the same thing. Though for me it's pretty useless. I always use HSI to navigate, much easier to figure out where am I in relation to the course line.
Thanks Bear I was unaware.
Also, when navigating to the “ils start point” you had a centered steering cue and you thought you had a course deviation on the HSI, but you’ll notice the red flag in the display which indicates that there is not a course.
You also get steering bars on the ADI. If you keep the bar on the ADI centered, it will steer you to the course and allow you to intercept, preventing s-turns back and forth across the course as you get on centerline.
In the same vein, at 21:53, you mention that the “azimuth deviation line” (it’s a steering bar, not an indication of your position relative to desired azimuth) on the ADI is working, telling you to go straight forward, but you say you aren’t interested in the HUD at that point. I think that is because you think it is not giving good info to you at this point. It actually IS. It is telling you that you are on the correct heading to intercept the localizer. It will then steer you to and keep you on the localizer.
Likewise, the horizontal line on the ADI is not the glide slope-it is a steering bar to get you to and keep you on the glide slope.
The vertical line on the HUD is the "bank steering indicator." You are supposed to roll until it is centered and then pull to get the vv onto the indicator. This will give you the angle of bank that brings you back to the course. This is in the manual, BTW. In ILS mode this is replaced by a "plus" symbol (the "landing steering cross") on the HUD, and putting the vv on the plus symbol is essentially the same as flying the needles on the ADI. Also in the manual.
Thank. Great explanation, Cap.
I guess any such low visibility approach should be aborted in real life. But the advantage of simulations is exaggeration!
How do I see the waypoints I made in mission editor when I press F10
Can I just use the HUD solely to navigate even though I am no longer on course? Thank you
Yup
Why do you sound exactly like George Russell?
:DDD "i've overcompensated, i've stalled the airplane .... there's our runway (completely off)"
That was so chaotic haha
Do you the missions for these lessons? It is hard to follow with out them.
No sadly
Probably a stupid question, but I’ll ask anyway. 😂 How can I display the flight plan within the F10 map?
click on your plane, should come up
@@grimreapers awesome, thank you!
when playing on multiplayer, how i do select the ils to which airport i want to land? do i speak with the atc and that automatically selects the ils approach for that airport? or do i cycle waypoints? if so how do i know im at the right waypoint while cycling?
You know, I didn't even know that you could change the color of the HUD in the F-15. Do they have a black colored option for flying through white clouds? I think every plane should have that capability.
no black
How do you get the waypoints to show up on the F10 map?
how do u set a waypoint ?
In Mission editor.
@@grimreapers but how do you set waypoints in multiplayer ?
I have been tractice this and i have to say it's haaard!!! Why that hud assigned indicator lie all the time or is not accurate enough? It guide me way off air field when you start approach? And sometimes ADI yellow bar just go bonkers and not work at all? Is this something to do with altitude and speed when you start approach?

Yes it is very sensitive indicator if I remember correctly because I haven't fly F-15 almost year when I start to fly other jets.

I cannot for the life of me get ILS to work right. If I line up on the cross ~7 miles out and continue following it I will end up 30,000 feet 30+miles from the airfield.
I was trying to use that F15 training mission. And I just can't get it to work right following the cross on the HUD. I will have to try using the ADI instead.
Deserves a remake;)
My glide slope never comes alive. Would anyone know why?
why can it just put a box on my screen where to put my nose
can you make your own waypoints ingame?..
not in this plane
I've been enjoying these vids.
I cannot see my route paths or waypoints (yellow dots & dashed lines) no matter what I toggle on the map during my mission. Any ideas? Thanks!

On June 29tn 1987 a unidentified radar contact went from 22000meter to 6000meters over Visby (Gotland).
This turned out to be a USAF SR-71 Blackbird (piloted by Duane Noll and Tom Veltrithat) suffered right side engine failure during a recon flight over the USSR. Soviet fighters among them MIG-21s were ordered to attempt to force the RS-71 to land within Soviet territory or shoot it down.
At the same time two AJ-37 from F13 Norrköping piloted by Roger Möller and Krister Sjöberg, they were tasked by ATC to make visual contact with the object in question. When they made contact they arrived above the struggling SR-71. The mission now became to escort the SR-71 towards Denmark (a NATO country).
