Locked them in TWS and hit the closest 3. Took out the last one with a sidewinder in Vertical Scan mode after my split S corkscrew. Also had my first guns kill. This is addictive 😂
YEARS old. but i'd have to say. 39 hours into DCS. decided to watch this video... MAN. after my 2nd try, SU-33 DOWN!!!! Also like to add. I've never actually won a dogfight OR BVR fight before haha. ty!
Thank you for pointing out a lot of fundamental errors I've been making: firing more than 1 missile per engagement not peeling off 40° and turning back in to drain energy of incoming missiles (coming in hot head on) firing missiles well beyond 10 miles... I have things to work on
ONE THING I FORGOT. When applying this tactic at different altitudes, use the following fire points: Deck: 6 miles (doesn't work to well at low level) 20,000ft: 10 miles 40,000ft: 14-15 miles And interpolate in between.
Assuming both are the same alt, I don't think this tactic works if both are different alts. As the shooter, your job is to match the bandit's for this tactic.
Very entertaining video. Always expect a ET. So always flare at those ranges. As yourself noticed he will hide that ET in a radar missile. I have fallen for this many times. You can do the same with AIM-9 shots from 10 miles. But then they have to keep flying towards you.
I learned to set my recliner at angels back (feet up) and situational awareness of my wife is in the kitchen before calling out Fox4 Fox4 which my wife has already decoded as “Honey get me a beer” 🍺
New to DCS and to flight sims and this really helped. I used it in the 4 v 4 mission and took 3 of the 4 enemy down immediately but messed the crank up and got hit after firing my missiles. I was firing too soon before, as soon as I got within range, waiting til 10km left them no time to maneuver.
So there are a few better tactics for 1v1 with a flanker I would suggest. Number 1 is always expect the ET. There are basically 2 fixed ranges at which all the all aspect IR missile sensors in DCS will detect an afterburning head-on target determined by its altitude. The only difference between IR missiles otherwise is kinetic performance and maneuverability . Dropping out of AB before this point denies that shot entirely. They'd have to LA (with Low PK if you stay off the burner) which is an extra step and more time before they start defending if they bother with trying to force the ET shot . Number 2: Never give a flanker your six unless you are breaking LOS, or have a wingman to extend to. In all situations where you can get under him while performing defensive maneuvers , its just smarter to beam as opposed to going cold. Most of the time you'll either break the lock outright, or spoof the missile with chaff. This allows you to better keep eyes on the bandit (and his missiles), recommit faster and, create tracking issues for his IR sensors if the 120 is spoofed without forcing them cold or beaming. Lastly, unless you have a huge advantage, double tap, 1-2nm apart. By huge I mean a combination of speed, altitude and SA. If he isn't painting me, and I'm not in AB at a given range he most likely isn't in position to reciprocate.
Sometimes I crank at 20 (really pushing it and if I really want his ass). The F-15 can turn with the best with of them, even if they have nerfed the engines in game, she still can power into turns if you fly her right. Also, most people don't like using the vertical when fighting. The AIM-7 and a diving in on your enemy with speed and power from the perch can really be deadly.
nice video, thank you. I think it was practically pitbull off the rail at that point. I enjoy these types of tutorials. Update- so what I took away from this is concentrating on 1 bandit is the most important task for an inexperienced pilot. In the F16, bags dropped and 2-4 missiles makes for a very fast nimble airframe. 4 for 4 so far taking on 1 at a time. Firing at each one between 10-12 miles away with 120’s. Very cool
Cap, very interesting video for 2019 viewer, a month ago, I watched your videos about radar guided missile defensive moves and your new BVR offensive cranking moves, seeing this 2017 video somehow I can see more things from the theory implemented into simulated fights, and your example too,

Be interesting to see tactics in DCS with the F-14 and their AIM 54's. Whilst the range and the fast speed will lure pilots to fire them off at 100nm that may only work against heavy bombers. In Harpoon against Flankers I found 45 (+/-) miles optimum, with a follow up once they had been suppressed they (AIM 54s) are feared for their plunging speed of 5k more than their total range - the Flanker must resist descending to the deck in order to survive. Good Vid Cap!!! Fortenara is rather good........... Best, Pete. EDITED: for more clarity.

Thanks for this video @Grim Reapers. Really helped put some understanding into the tactics for me. A2A combat is very formulaic to a large extent (and energy is king), but it's being good enough and practised enough that makes the difference (guess that's why Top Gun & Red Flag were invented and so important).
So what if one of your bags fell on somebody or their car/tractor/house/field? Is the land under air combat training areas littered with bags? Are they recovered/re-used? Isn't a fuel tank containing fuel a bit like a napalm bomb?
Great video and explanation on BVR tactics i learned a lot. One thing i wasn't sure about is the last engagement, I thought you had to keep radar lock when using the Russian missiles but Fortinero goes defensive pretty much as soon as he gets the 2 shots off. So i assume the ER was to make you go defensive and the ET can still track you without the need to be locked and tracking with the Aircraft radar ?.
I know this is a rather old video, but I gotta ask: it seems like you have a "toggle zoom" button? I've gone over the view/zoom controls, but that doesn't exist... how do you manage to quickly change the zoom levels like that? (e.g. 4:16)

@@RazzJT it does look like it has about 2 secs pitbull time when he fires but not sure why so short is that range dependant i guess is pitbull at 10 mile or just in shot range etc
At 10 miles AMRAAM would have tactical advantage - if target is flying straight(usually to guide Fox-1 missile) and you fire AMRAAM at 10 miles, it will only start tracking when it's too late. Basically enemy would have no time to dodge it.
Btw what is with DCS and AIM-120s? I've tried them both in 1.5.7 and 2.1.1 and they have a ridiculously short range. By the time I can fire a no-escape shot at a plane merging with me at 1000+ knots - I can already visually see the enemy.
Yes this is a very controversial move. It's to make it a little more accessible to new pilots. New pilots entering DCS for the first time and getting shot at 60miles with a AMRAAM would scare too many new pilots off, so it's a balance to help the community grow. We just have to accept it. I think the drag coefficients have just be upped for the medium range missiles.
eh, I don't get it. Dodging a BVR shot with a realistic range is a lot easier at its proper distance. If that's really the case I guess I'm gonna stick with Falcon BMS for my air-to-air combat needs :(

Hey Cap and the Reapers! Do you know of an F-15C enhanced version where I can hit the appropriate mach numbers at altitude? Where um i can get into the lua and modify the engine matrix pmax pfor and etcetera?
You are a genius! Most F15c guides I read advised me to fire at around 15 miles and spam every time I recover from a crank. Your guide is so efficient. However, a similarly genius RUclipsr showcases how he took out a F15c with Su27 by flying low to the ground and beaming. The F15 was doing everything as you did and only fired the second missile after the first one missed. However, the Su 27 did not fire any BVR missile. It simply closed in while beaming and destroyed the F15c. Do you have any F15c guide on countering a low flying Su27?
So that was all very helpfull and such... but most servers like open Conflict are not letting you use the AMRAM just Sparrows. Are they when I understand correctly just taking the thing that makes the F-15 good?? And how do i not suck at the AIM-7s??
I tend to use the same tactics as a Flanker would with its R-27R/ER - make sure you're higher and faster than he is, if you can, otherwise they will have all the advantages. Otherwise crank to one side, put him on your radar gimbal until you're ready to shoot, turn across him and shoot when you're nose on (chaff all the way) and go all the way over until he's on your other gimbal. The R-27 will have to fly SUPER far and pull a lot of g to intercept, so you should have a good chance of trashing it. But keep your speed up!
The worst problem of using the AIM-7 is that you MUST NOT EVER lose your radar lock, not even for a split second. And during these tactic maneuvers, your target will most likely notch your radar and break the lock at some point. AIM-7 also requires a full lock on target, meaning you can't use it in TWS mode whatsoever, only in STT Lock mode, and this will give the enemy all indications that he's being locked by you and will cue him to turn away at the right time, rendering the shot even less effective. AIM-7s are only useful when fighting low maneuverability aircrafts and under ideal conditions, which are as rare as you can get.
Hi, I'm new to DCS and just wondering (sort of off topic) when I play Instant Action, what does it mean when the AWACS broadcast "AWACS (Overlord): Enfield 1-1, Overloard, BRA, 322 for 28, at 20000, hot"? I'm sure there is a lot of meaning in this but I can only guess what they mean. Any help is appreciated.
Elements in order: Message receiver, message broadcaster, type of message(BRA = bearing, range and altitude), target bearing, target distance(miles), target altitude, target direction aspect in relation to message received.
Thank you so much for the info. The target bearing (e.g. 322) does that mean on a F-15C I turn until my heading is a bit past 32 to intercept the plane?
So are you waiting for the enemy to fire hiss missile first? Or are you waiting to get close to the second bar in the hud? so that the missile is more likely to hit? or both? I would assume you should fire as soon as you can or am I wrong?
ETs are vicious little buggers - I love putting an ET in the air a second or two after I fire an ER, especially effective if the target pilot starts a crank to trash the ER right away, there's a good chance he might not see the ET launch!
+J C The R-27ET can kill a target from up to 32.6 miles (52.5 km) head-on, so the seeker has to be able to see a target at least that far (if not further!) head-on, at least in certain conditions. And if you have an F-15 which has been going supersonic, I think the front part will warm up nicely for the seeker. I don't know if DCS models that, but it should make a difference IRL.
The ET was originally designed to chase down fleeing high-speed Tornado/F-111s - it needed lots of energy but was designed to be fired from close range behind a target running away on burner. Sorry, but there is no way it could lock onto a target from front aspect at 30 miles.
Well, even a cursory look at Wikipedia (which I know isn't always the most accurate!) reveals an "effective kill range" for a head-on aspect (which the above is) of between 2 - 52.5km, which is over 32 miles. Tail aspect ranges are much, much lower, so while you're not wrong... context matters. The seeker can definitely see further than the missile can fly.
+J C "The ET was originally designed to chase down fleeing high-speed Tornado/F-111s - it needed lots of energy but was designed to be fired from close range behind a target running away on burner." Both the R-27T and R-27ET seem to be all-aspect from everything I have found. The R-27 is a contemporary of the R-73 (which is notably all-aspect), entering service 1 year prior (1983) to the R-73 (1984). "Sorry, but there is no way it could lock onto a target from front aspect at 30 miles." In reading further, you do seem to be correct on this. The front-aspect max range shot requires "PPS" mode, where the missile is fired without lock, and acquires a target while in flight. So it isn't really clear to what range the R-27ET seeker could see a front-aspect target in optimal conditions. Since "PPS" mode isn't modeled in DCS, it does appear some liberties were taken.
I've been trying this repeatedly against an AI SU-27 (myself in the Eagle) and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. The mission starts with us both a little higher at angels 25. We're both hot. At 30'000 feet from target I quickly get him in my far right radar quadrant and keep him there. By the time we're 13,000 feet from each other I have an R27 in my face and I am dead already. Does this tactic not apply any more? Has 5 years of DCS updates changed parameters?
I was always taught to only use the required CM. So if you are spiked by radar then chaff. HOWEVER after seeing this playback I will probably use chaff as well, in case ET missiles are in the air. Saying that, flares make you REALLY visible, so it's a tough one....
The Real F15C has better manuvabilty than the Su 27 above 550knts.. they accelerate in a turn and keep there energy up while Su 27 while loose energy...the Eagle is designed for high energy turns and BVR ,but can hold its own against even an F16, at low altitude.

Hey Cap and the Reapers! Do you know of an F-15C enhanced version where I can hit the appropriate mach numbers at altitude? Where um i can get into the lua and modify the engine matrix pmax pfor and etcetera?
Superb, thanks.

Do you have any F15c guide on countering a low flying Su27?
sadly the Flankers do indeed own the low altitude and Eagles own the high altitude. I will investigate.
Grim Reapers I found the link:

I think he is Jabbers
Hey Cap... at 9:13.. you said you were in TWS mode but in the vid you are in STT.. which is fine as it is a known 1v1. Or am I missing something.
So that was all very helpfull and such... but most servers like open Conflict are not letting you use the AMRAM just Sparrows. Are they when I understand correctly just taking the thing that makes the F-15 good?? And how do i not suck at the AIM-7s??
I have no help for you, I can not use the Aim-7 at all.
Yea me too and thats my problem but thanks anyway the video was helpfull in regards to the AMRAM
Thanks very much! I will try varying these tactics
322) does that mean on a F-15C I turn until my heading is a bit past 32 to intercept the plane?
jyan21 yes
What’s the song at 15:04
where do i find the song at 18:31
With an amraam, do you have to keep lock on the target until it goes pitbull?
That great for me as I'm just starting DCS, thanks for you work. I'd love to see F-15C tactics against multiple bandits.
apperantly ive been doing it wrong. ive been flying at like 1,000 feet at all times
Juniorslothsix but you want to because of people sneaking upon you
So are you waiting for the enemy to fire hiss missile first? Or are you waiting to get close to the second bar in the hud? so that the missile is more likely to hit? or both? I would assume you should fire as soon as you can or am I wrong?
are there any signals from the f15 where it tells you that you are at 10mil? anyway grim you are the best 😁
How come I use my bags in the fights aswell and I know what I am doing?
You are my hero
Because it is a simulated game in the end and in the real world you would probably be dead.
Interesting how the ET keeps tracking you from the front quarter despite all the manoeuvring ;)
+J C "The ET was originally designed to chase down fleeing high-speed Tornado/F-111s - it needed lots of energy but was designed to be fired from close range behind a target running away on burner."
Both the R-27T and R-27ET seem to be all-aspect from everything I have found. The R-27 is a contemporary of the R-73 (which is notably all-aspect), entering service 1 year prior (1983) to the R-73 (1984).
"Sorry, but there is no way it could lock onto a target from front aspect at 30 miles."
In reading further, you do seem to be correct on this.
Has 5 years of DCS updates changed parameters?
who watches 40 min vid clicks to watch the first part.... video ends Me: Oh well that happened lol
How do I know if I have done a silent lock ?
Use TWS option
Thank you
Come to the BMS side.... we have Link 16.
could you make am f18 one?
ruclips.net/video/BLZaOvtn2wo/видео.html
Your forgot to lock him in TWS mode
Whoopsy!
@@grimreapers Do as I say not as I do. XD
My tws distance resets to 10 nm and cant change it. Idk why
When I press fire button , f-15 shooting machine gun whhhhy? (I’m using keyboard)
to fire missiles you press WEAPON RELEASE not TRIGGER
Great video man.
When you do the split... would it be worthwhile to use both chaff and flare?
Would you consider make an su-27 version?
I was always taught to only use the required CM. So if you are spiked by radar then chaff. HOWEVER after seeing this playback I will probably use chaff as well, in case ET missiles are in the air. Saying that, flares make you REALLY visible, so it's a tough one....
*use flare as well
I have to disagree..the Eagle is plenty maneuverable ( Real ones)....the Eagles maintains speeds in a turn while rhe Flanker will loose energy.
Roger, old video, flight models have changed since then.
I am very disappointed in the fact missile range has been reduced by 40% DCS is not very accurate and it wants to introduce game stuff.
Ok, now that you have is a novel explanation about what’s about to happen, play the damn video. Lol
The Real F15C has better manuvabilty than the Su 27 above 550knts.. they accelerate in a turn and keep there energy up while Su 27 while loose energy...the Eagle is designed for high energy turns and BVR ,but can hold its own against even an F16, at low altitude.
