    Friend of mine had the EPS 16, which was similar but a lot more cumbersome, when I saw the ASR-10 I wanted it so bad but was too broke to afford it. Back in the day, I think it retailed for like $2500.00 which is like 8 million dollars now. This was definitely a studio board, I remember guys trying to gig with the ASR-10 seriously it was like carrying a small car, it easily weighed 40-50 pounds. I waited a few years and bought the Roland XP-50 with the Hip Hop and Classic Keyboard modules and sequenced in Cakewalk. Still never sounded as good as the ASR-10.

    The good ol daysssss!!
    I miss our ARS-10 we had the ensonic and the mpc 2000xl and mackie mixer and wired all into the ASr-10 with the mophat and motif sound racks!
    The mpc -2000xl was my baby!!! Even though we started to mess around witht he ASR-10 there was something different about it and how it sampled!
    The sp12 was always dope for drums!!! With sp 12 we had to have the
    Vintage Synth Explorer Akai S700 hooked up to it , that was the perfect combo with the emu sp!
    The asr-10 didn't need a combo it stood strong by it self!
    One thing I hated about the ASR-10 if you lost a disk or one of the disk got messed up you would lose the entire sequence basically!
    Also it use to shut down by itself a lot , so saving was a must even when we used a scuzzy port!
    Our ASr-10 was maxed out with full memory and even had the effect processing board chip in it as well so we had the full boat!!
    Good ol days that piece was a classic and very underestimated and is a key to the hiphop boom bap culture era!!

      That was an ultimate hip-hop rig there my friend!!!

    The ASR-10 could resample itself, many years before other machines were doing it. It was also an audio recorder, you could record audio tracks on top of your beat. It was way ahead of its time. It also weighs more than your car. SAMPLE->TRUNCATE->NORMALIZE (The Holy Trinity)

    • @Ernzmoneybeats
      @Ernzmoneybeats 10 лет назад

      ***** Good stuff right there. I remember that piece before Igot my Triton ProX. ASR was a beast for sure back in the day.

    • @nobodyneverknows
      @nobodyneverknows 8 лет назад +1

      I call bullsit on that, akai had resampling like 4 years earlier, at least, just dont post random bullshit when you dont know whats up

    • @Ernzmoneybeats
      @Ernzmoneybeats 8 лет назад

      Chrząszczyświerszcz Chrabąszczyżowąski your right , but ASR wasn't far behind it. I just realized how he worded that.

    • @illmagnetic
      @illmagnetic 8 лет назад +3

      Akai resampling meant reducing the sound from 16 bit to 12 or 8. ASR10 resampling meant recording the output of the ASR back into the ASR dry or with effects. Akai was NOT doing that.

    • @nobodyneverknows
      @nobodyneverknows 8 лет назад +1

      you got it wrong once again, resampling is not reducing bit rate... cmon man

    First sampler I ever messed with was the asr-10 a friend of mine had. Instead of getting the asr-10 or an mpc 2000xl, I got the asr-x pro, biggest gear mistake ever. I was into the roland mc-505 and wanted some pads and buttons as opposed to keys and ended up with "that thing" lol. My asr-x pro floppy started smoking one day, and the pads wore down to the level of the metal, and the plastic struts that support the pads broke. 3 years asr-x pro vs. 20 years asr-10. The ASR-10 is built like a tank

    Ahhhh, good old Rick! Actually a REALLY useful tape... gets you up and running on an ASR in no time. The best part is where he says "Let's go and use a DAT recorder to capture an... 'undesirable event' you wouldn't want in the studio".... cut to outdoors, he pulls out a fucking M16 and starts shooting off blanks! Turned the sample into a "space snare" with a fuck ton of plate reverb... I've never seen an official demo like it, it's so fitting for how quirky the ASR-10 is.

      sp1200 for drums was stupid crazy!! but nothing could beat the power of the asr-10 for sampling!!
      This is why most who used the sp1200 hooked it up to the 700
      but again the drums that came out of the sp1200 nothng could compare to it at all
      We youse to sample the dr rythm boss 550 into the sp1200 and the asr-10 and mpc and every-time we did it the sp1200 would win for sampling drums into it!

    I always wondered why the Kurzweil k2500S or K2600 never got used like the asr-10. I know RZA had one, wonder what beats if any made it to actual releases that were produced by RZA on the Kurzweil...

    • @Abruzzo333
      @Abruzzo333 Год назад

      The Kurzweil's were much more used by industrial groups and within other electronic genres, who's artists are far more into sonic exploration than hip hop producers. They are one of the deepest digital synthesizers ever conceived, capable of doing things with samples and sounds that very few if anything else could match.

    Funny to praise the sonic and ergonomic qualities of the ASR and then end up in that Pro Tools crap ;-) BTW, could someone point me to that awesome Ensoniq VHS demo tape with the funny bearded guy in hawaiian shirts? It's sooooo funny and cheesy!

    • @thatnigguhred4750
      @thatnigguhred4750 8 лет назад

      Studios around the world use Pro-Tools, it's an application, which means it does what you make it do, so if "It's crap", then the truth is really it's not crap but you are. Most people that say things like that are salty cuz they can't afford Pro-Tools haha chessy, just like your display picture

    • @MoCheez
      @MoCheez 8 лет назад +1

      I know what ProTools does and I know studios around the world do use it, just like Avid. But it's like Windows vs MacOS or just like VHS took over Betamax, but it has more to do with marketing than quality. I've been around mixing studios both for music and video for the last 20 years, and even though I was not the one who used it, I think I've seen enough to know what it does. I find it crap compared to stuff like, say, Nuendo. Things are getting a little better with the latest versions but it's far from ergonomic, still slow in some ways and full of bugs. Man! It took them almost 20 years to introduce offline bounce when everybody else was doing it in the first place! Come on… And yes, my display picture was intended to be cheesy ;-)

      +Mo' Cheez noted but Pro-Tools is a powerful tool. But is still just a tool that's only as good as the one who wields it. Same as Nuendo... You should put a yellow filter over the picture, make it even cheeseeeeeeierrr haha thumbs up

    Just like a midi-keyboard, if you're using it for sampling you don't need to know how to play piano.
