‘Babylon’ Director Damien Chazelle Says He Knew The Film Would “Get Some People Mad”| THR News
The Hollywood Reporter
/ hollywoodreporter
Everyone commenting “it didn’t make people mad, no one was watching it” it actually did make some people mad. It received a lot of harsh reviews from critics, nothing to do with the box office. He knows what he’s talking about lol.
Yeah, I saw articles with writers being outraged about the representation of certain ideas and characters from the film. Not sure how many of them actually saw the film they were chastising, but the news of Babylon being "problematic" probably cost the film a couple million dollars in profits.
Maybe he should do a lot less talking and a lot better directing
@@CaptainChapin why are you so offended?
He‘ll do so many more awesome movies.
The problem is not that is making some people mad, the problem is that no one is watching this film, and that is losing hundreds of millions.
Looking forward to it this week. 🙂
idk i'm so tired of movies about hollywood cricling jerking itself there are so many amazing stories that can be told and this year's other releases prove that
The movie has a lot more to it than that. It's very critical of Hollywood while also acknowledging that there's something special about it that keeps people coming back for more.
@@jvenom174 there r still so many films criticizing hollywood....it's too oscar baity for me to take it seriously
But the movie isn't a movie jerking Hollywood off at all, it's like a major f u to the Hollywood system
@@oolongtea4013 wich ones?
It’s literally about how horrible Hollywood is lol
Damien is legend
I felt so sorry for Damien Chazelle 's own movie '' Babylon " , I wish It was great and amazing but It was a bunker. I wish his next project is way, way, WAY... Better movie! For Babylon avenge It with the next Damien Chazelle's own movie. Like La La Land & Whiplash in a way It start. I will have to believe his next movie magic dreams. Always...
Who knows, this film might become a well-regarded gem in the future (a la It's a Wonderful Life) - or at least a cult classic.
Nah. It was trash.
@@Toy1er I loved it
People weren’t mad, they just didn’t care. Stop thinking you’re more important than you are lol
Bruh that's so reductive it's insane. Critics and individuals who disliked it didn't "not care". They actively engaged with the film, had a somewhat negative response to it and took up faults with a number of the film's many elements. So yeah obv some people were mad at it
@@stm8872 the film is a box office bomb. More people didn’t see it than those who did. It’s not reductive to say the general public didn’t care, it’s the truth.
@@boogerlui"We all knew the movie was going to ruffle some feathers and get some people mad..." He says it made SOME people mad, not the general public as you say. So yeah, obviously he is referring to people that, you know, saw the film, in case that wasn't immediately apparent. Might need to work on those comprehension skills bro
@@stm8872 my comment said people didn’t care. More people did not watch it than did. My comment is still applicable. Maybe comprehend my comment first before going off and getting sensitive lol.
@@boogerlui sure...but u also said "people weren't mad", and then corrected him by saying that "people didn't care". You can't respond to a statement by dismissively rejecting its claim AND simultaneously act as if u meant for ur response to partially stand alone, in a vacuum, removed from context. It just doesn't work like that. Like c'mon bruh, as much as I appreciate debate, what ur saying is just silly to anyone paying attention. Also, anytime someone points out that someone else is "getting sensitive" it's often either an entirely redundant observation, or just off the mark. In this case I'll leave it up to others to decide
A film about Hollywood 🙄
Yeah people in Idaho, Mississippi or even South of the 10 really love 'em. Can't get enough insider talk, believe me... ;-) Same reason why HBO's Succession is popular in some circles but not mainstream audiences... A corporate power play soap opera taking place when most people can't even put food on the table? Yeah that really sits well with people outside of 90210 and the Hills...
There's a lot more to it than that. It's about the ending of an era, and having your time in the sun that you ultimately have to accept will end without any guarantee of significance. There's a lot of themes about existentialism and fear of never accomplishing anything that truly means something. The movie lets the audience decide if any of the actions the characters take were worth it in the end, but I get that most people don't care. Seems like most people would rather watch big blue kitty cat people swim for three hours.
@@jvenom174ur spitting facts man
I think ppl are just tired of Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie
I think most people just want to watch superhero and franchise movies in current times. Anything that's out of the ordinary or really demands an audience's attention is a niche market nowadays. I think Damien knew his film would bomb when it was set up to battle Avatar 2 at the box office, and I give him credit for sticking to his guns and releasing this around the same time as a sort of anti-Avatar. Movies like this are a rare occurence in modern times. A three hour long 100 million dollar movie about the transition from silent to talking films in the 1920's being made in the 2020's is kind of an insanely beautiful idea. I know most people don't care, but most people don't actually love cinema... They just like visual themepark rides.
@@jvenom174 - Everything Everywhere All at once is not getting any hate and it is not a Hollywood hit machine franchise. I think you are purposely ignoring the arguments against it and pretending people are mad it’s not a franchise.
@@daniellove162 Everything Everywhere All at Once is nothing like Babylon. That movie has a sci-fi action element to it that can bring in the normies to the theatre. Don't get me wrong, I liked that movie more than Babylon, but Everything Everywhere All at Once is a movie that only cost about 50 million (including marketing costs) and makes sense to release commerically. It's got plenty of action, eye candy, and comedy to tide over the mainstream audience as well as some social commentary about nihilism, optimism, and acceptance to appease the people who want to watch something with a little more substance.
Babylon is a movie destined to fail, because the target audience for it is so small. That's all that I was trying to say, it's not a film that's common or even smart to make. It's a three hour long R rated movie about a couple of people in Hollywood trying to successfully navigate the transition from silent films to talkies. It's a recipe for a box office disaster, and I think it's worth giving credit to the people who decided to take a chance on an idea like this and actually go through with making it, considering how high the chances were that it would fail financially.
@@daniellove162 im gonna go out on a big limb and say that the other guy is more versed, clear, and intelligent in regards to film critique than you are my friend. Sometimes you just need to lay down your chubby digits and let another man have his day. Capiche?
I think people just aren’t interested by names anymore unless it’s tied to a bigger franchise. An interesting plot needs to be introduced for people to actually be in the seats unless you areLeonardo DiCaprio
Has anyone seen it?
A few but not many. I think it's a safe bet that anybody who's voicing their complaints in a dismissive tone most likely did not see it, and it seems like most of the comments written here have a dismissive tone.
I saw and loved it
Yeah, it's amazing.
for me it was amazing
I did and i'm doing a second watch too :)
Odd. Movie didn't look interesting outside the cast. I didn't even know what it was about till just NOW. Maybe blame it on the marketing.
It's also obvious which movies are pretty much paid vacations too. So I won't be seeing thing like that in theaters lol
If I'm going to the theater it's for something exciting like top gun or literally anything that won't make me fall asleep.
There's lots of INTERESTING AND ENGAGING movies that can be considered boring
Certainly to each their own, but I think you'd be surprised if you saw the film, which I hope you eventually do. Because imo, like the new Top Gun, it was never boring for even a moment. Non stop cinematic electricity bro
It... STINKS!
Meh! Not everyone can bat a 1000... Like Tarantino I'm sure his worst is still light years ahead of others best!
Tarantino overrated
What's there to be mad about? The problem with the film was it was too long and really for no reason. The beginning of the film was practically the trailer...and didn't indicate what the film was about. It wasn't really needed...other than to establish the relationship with Margot and Diego...but that could've been in other parts of the film
It's a big beautiful mess of a movie, and I'd rather watch a hundred more movies like this than go see the next Avatar or superhero movie of the week.
@@jvenom174much be hard to go through life with that terrible taste in entertainment 😂
@@Ccthomas-ks1hn L take dawg
@@Ccthomas-ks1hn It actually seems like he watches a lot of movies and has the attention span to handle meaningful content. If your favorite films are Avatar 2 and other franchise films, you shouldn't be criticizing other people's tastes
People weren't mad, they simply didn't watch it because it stars flop queen 👑#TaylorSwift every movie she's been in has flopped. Margot Robbie did debut in the wolf of Wall Street and that was a successful movie
I think the first suicide squad did well financially, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was successful, I,Tonya and Bombshell were well received, and the second suicide squad did pretty well with critics and audiences, but the financial side is unclear due to it being released simultaneously on HBO Max and theatres. She had a nice little tv career in australia as well before she got the Wolf of Wall Street gig. I don't know why everyone is suddenly deciding to hate on Margot Robbie in the past couple months, but none of it seems warranted.
Taylor Swift was in this movie? where were the Swiftes tho?
@@LeveMeiALone conspiracy theory is that #TaylorSwift success is fabrication because she only supports #HilaryClinton therefore she's mega successful. Music sale are known to be botted these days. Just look at the ticket master scandal. People bought so many concert tickets it crashed the system. Then the FBI had to investigate Hilary Clintons cash cow mega star who tells people to vote for her but given an open choice people could care less about actually supporting Taylor swift.
Proof her success is rigged
Lol Taylor Swift ain't in this bro
@@stm8872 whoops I was thinking of Amsterdam, got mixed up
The movie actually makes people feel bored more than mad.
Bro did u actually even see it?
Whiplash was a fluke
stay mad
It's a film that should have only had a limited theatrical Oscar-qualifying run followed by a streaming release. Why? I really am curious to see this but I will never step foot in a germ-y theatre again especially with lax masking/cleaning policies these days... These adult indie films have all but disappeared from movieplexes for this and many other reasons and I don't think THIS was the film to suddenly turn around the Titanic as it were...
Trivia --- Emma Stone was originally the female lead, but she had to drop out due to "scheduling conflicts".
Emma prob saw trouble signs in the script and backed out graciously.
She dodged a bullet.
But not Margot Robbie.
Mad bc the film is long and boring
But did he know that his movie was inconsistant and dull
I enjoyed it. It's ambitious, messy and bloated, but it's vastly more interesting compared to big blue kitty cat people swimming with Whales for three hours.
You can like both...If you have seen it, there's a clip from Avatar 1 to showcase the Cinema....
Whiplash was a
La La Land was
First Man was a
and...
Babylon is a
He´s got to keep up his game ....
