@@rajv9732 Wrong. Best film of 2022 and something that is going to be widely misunderstood by people like you who don't understand film language. Go back to your endless superhero sequels and reboots and let the real cinephiles enjoy this one.
@@ahmetfarukaltundal6763 You realize that you can understand a movie and see what it was going for and still not like it right? Or is that such an outrageous idea to wrap your head around?
This movie has all of the pieces you'd find in a masterpiece. It has a brilliant cast that delivers captivating performances, beautiful cinematography, and out of this world production design that you certainly don't see everyday.
Like most truly visionary projects, 'Babylon' is destined to be misunderstood and polarizing for the next 10 years until detractors realize it really was That Masterpiece all along. Yes, I'll plant my flag now and compare the current spate of reactions to those of Kubrick's films, another visionary artist who spent much of his career being sorely misunderstood and unfairly maligned: initially the feelings of a new Kubrick film tended to be confusion, frustration, and a sense that the man was mired in self-indulgence. But then, as year after year after year passes, suddenly there forms a sea change in recognizing the works' latent genius. It happened with '2001', 'A Clockwork Orange', 'Barry Lyndon', 'The Shining', 'Eyes Wide Shut'... and it'll happen to 'Babylon'. Yeah, I'm saying it. Best film of 2022, and an early viable candidate for film of the decade if the divisive responses are any indication. The most divisive films always end up being the most important ones, whether you like it or not. ;)
How...where is the logic in most of the scenes especially the intro of ramcharan, rearing animals in town without anyone knowing and animals in van making no noise till someone opens it...what ..not even a single clap till the end with a packed house...its only CG
Great cinematic experience, a boldly uncompromising masterpiece. I think it did not well at the box office because of the ending. Everyone you have grown to like and root up to goes down. If the movie had ended 20 minutes earlier with some vague hints of tragedy it could have been a hit. I hope Damien gets full backing for his future projects. He is great artist and visionary on a scale rarely seen since the rise of Coppola and Scorsese
No clue how this film didn't win Best Production Design and Best Original Score. Margot also should have been nominated Best Actress and Pitt for Best Supporting Actress over Brian Tyree.
@@takethechance7422or maybe it’s because 1) it’s a rated R movie, which automatically lowers its audience and 2) that it has only started reaching other countries. I’m from England and it only came out last Friday
@@Jake_Deagan So it did poorly because it's rated R? There's plenty of R rated movies that are huge hits at the box office lmao. And ok, great, it finally make it to the UK. Regardless, it was still a major flop here in America.
@@takethechance7422 It did poorly because inbred, mainstream-viewing morons like yourself assumed this was "that type of movie" even though it is literally the complete inverse to everything you think it is. It is challenging, audacious, confrontational, free-wheeling, vulgar, and far too intelligent for people such as yourself to grasp onto. And that's fine, because people like you will always have your endless trash superhero sequels and reboots and Liam Neeson action-revenge horseshit films to fawn over. But you literally don't know what you're talking about in saying this is a standard "film-about-films;" it's not, and that's why film normies are being such crybabies about this. They wanted 'Once Upon A Time in Hollywood' but instead got a modern-day Fellini that spends most of its time tearing apart our illusions of Old Hollywood and pointing out the hypocrisies upon which so much of it has been founded. Does this sound like a 'typical' film-about-Hollywood to you? The polarizing responses to this film are no different than those of Kubrick's, which also tended to be box office bombs upon release. I don’t understand the hate towards all the big recent film projects. Once upon a time in Hollywood, The French Dispatch and now Babylon never get the reviews they deserve. I think people get way too caught up in the idea that a film has to tell a compelling and deep story that delves into the characters soul for 2 hours straight. Why can’t a film just be the experience of it? Why is it so hard to just get pleasure from looking at a series of chaotic images working in tune to music, colours, people, nature, style, beauty. The film’s main criticisms all seem to be linked to things the film isn’t even trying to show in the first place.
Finally someone who understands ! As a french writer once said : there's stories everywhere, in cafes, in the streets, in prisons... that's not interesting in art ; what matters to me, it's style, a unique style
Yes Ollie, I have always been frustrated by the long-held notion that Style and Substance are somehow mutually exclusive, that a film whose central function is that of Form is suddenly a film without Substance -- even though that Form *is* the Substance. I don't understand why this is such a difficult notion for people to grasp, but it's also the reason why I literally cannot have a discussion about cinema with your typical mainstream viewer who sees maybe 10 films a year or something, and they're usually not very good in the first place. Film is the perfect medium for abstract representations of reality, but all mainstream audiences want are fluffy, easily digestible, formulaic narratives in which everything from symbolism to metaphor is spoonfed to them. Pathetic.
Too bad Oscar's trend toward box office sales as a means of determining winners is where things tend to go. Not saying popular movies don't need adulation, since most people want to see them, but well written movies that flesh out their characters have the best to offer.
I really enjoyed the film. I think it would have been more successful to focus more on the love story bt Manny and Laroy relative to the other scenes. The ending would have stung more and the plot would be more focused. That would've gotten it to masterpiece territory. As someone who loves cinema I still did enjoy this film alot
If it weren’t for the elephant shit and the pissing in the face at the start….. I’m guessing this movie would have a VERY different reaction than it currently does.
