  • PlayStation Legacy Reborn debuts today with my documentation and review of the Battle Arena Toshinden Series by Tamsoft. This is a fighting game series that began on the launch day of the Original PlayStation. Sony themselves published the first Battle Arena Toshinden in the west as they wanted a 3D fighting game that could rival Sega’s Virtua Fighter which was one of the Sega Saturns biggest hitters at the time. Battle Arena Toshinden has a colourful history of 4 games, a mixed bag of characters (one even based off Michael Jackson) and some interesting tone shifts in the latest release, Toshinden 4 (2000). Catch the history of the fighting series today on Don Critic!
    Games featured,
    1:22 - Battle Arena Toshinden
    8:36 - Battle Arena Toshinden 2
    12:54 - Battle Arena Toshinden 3
    21:28 - Toshinden 4

I never knew Toshinden 1 was the very 1st game where characters could move around the stage 😅. That's a feature ALL 3D fighting games should have. I absolutely loved the Toshinden series 😁 and I hated that there was never a reboot game with ALL the characters from Toshindens 1-4 playable on the same game 😥😞.

A Toshinden remake with all characters sounds like an awesome idea!

One of my early favorite series growing up within the 90s. Started it off on the Saturn with Battle Arena Toshinden among the Anime that came out through US Manga Corps. Despite the beta mechanics that was still shaping up through fighting games it still holds a great place in my collection that i still play to remind me where it all started it alongside Tekken, Virtua Fighter, and Dead Or Alive.

Great vid mate👍 Whilst I didn't own any of these I remember them from various demo discs. Interesting to see how far they pushed the series, a new entry might be feasible perhaps?

Wait, from that thumbnail... there were 4 Battle Arena Toshinden games!? I've admittedly never played any of them (by the time my family got a PlayStation, Tekken 2 was out) but I at least knew of the existence of 1 and 2. This was quite the surprise. Also a surprise to hear the developers went on to make the Onechanbara and Senran Kagura games.
2:06 - It's strange to think of a time for the PlayStation before the likes of Tekken or Crash and other IPs that are so significantly associated with the OG PlayStation. The heavy usage of Sofia in the marketing is also a rather funny contrast to when you hear about games where the publishers/marketers were trying to dissuade the developers having a female protagonist.
6:23 - That gun toting armour is super cool; Gaia has such an awesome boss design! It's rather funny hearing corporation being said so often in regards to such a fantasy style game. The word evokes a more modern style of business.
9:52 - Not a fan of that water effect on that stage; looks way too busy and jarring on the eyes. The following stage with it's depth and cheering crowds is much more welcoming on the eyes.
10:55 - Oh gosh; Tracy really breaks the whole medieval/fantasy feel here. That said, she does look pretty cool... but is immediately outclassed in the cool factor by Chaos being shown next. A scythe and buckler is a unique combination of weapons.
13:16 - From what I've seen, the caged arenas seem a downgrade. None of them seems particularly well detailed; just a mass of un-textured squares and lines. Fighting Vipers on the Saturn did the cage arena concept much better.
21:46 - All four entries on the original PlayStation... I do wonder if might have been better to have waited to create it for the PlayStation 2 instead and use the superior hardware to give a more significant jump. I suppose I'll find out as you cover this game.
23:02 - I feel Naru was better set-up to be the new protagonist over Subaru; she'd already been established in the last game and her design sets her more apart from the next protagonist being yet another spiky haired character.
26:54 - Really cool seeing the cutscenes play out before every match. It ties the arcade mode sensibility with a greater story emphasis.
30:02 - I do enjoy a good video game series retrospective and this was a fantastic one. I look forward to that Jumping Flash one; another series I've never played an entry for but has me curious to learn more about it.

There’s even some smaller spin-off Toshinden games that only released in Japan however. One is a chibi-styled one similar to Street Fighters ‘Pocket Fighter’. And there was a “reboot” of the series which only released for the Wii in the late 2000’s but it’s very different. I genuinely haven’t played Fighting Vipers, but you have peaked my interest. I think it got a remaster on PS3 so I’ll have to check it out, but I agree with your comment about the cage arenas. I see where you’re coming from with how heavy on the eyes, the rushing water background is. I think I found it impressive cause the first game had no noteworthy background designs haha. Amazing comment. Was really fun to read all your thoughts on each part of the video.

@@DonCritic Oh; a Wii exclusive certainly tickles my ears. I'm likely a long way off before I delve into the US and Japan markets of Wii games but it's always nice to know of such exclusives existing.
Glad my bulky comment was to your liking.

Awesome video. I grew up with the first game, but actually have never played any of the sequels, so it was interesting to hear about them. I do think the second and third look better than the first. I can’t remember if it was 2 or 3 (or both,) but I heard there’s an option to turn off the textures to get 60fps gameplay, which is kind of cool and way ahead of its time in terms of console games.
Random note: Eiji’s name is pronounced like the letters A+G said out loud. “Ayjee”

Thanks so much for watching! It was the third game that allowed the FPS option, certainly ahead of its time. There’s some footage in the video, which is in 30 and some in 60

I had Battle Arena Toshinden 2 for PS1, and I just hated it as a kid. I asked my parents to buy "Marvel Super Heroes", but instead, I got BAT2 and was not happy about it. Combat felt sluggish and slow. To me this game was not enjoyable in the slightest, but felt conditioned to play it because parents bought it for me. I didn't dare to complain about it to them.

Ouch. Getting BAT2 over Marvel Super Heroes is pretty disappointing, it was commendable of you not complaining though to not upset your parents. Shame the classic Marvel Vs Capcom fighting games haven’t been remastered for modern systems

B.0.T was the first 3D fighter I ever played (I had a virtua fighter port on the pc but it was lagging to f*ck) and it blew my mind. That and Tobal no.1 where my go to jams until I really got into the OG tekken trilogy
However BOT did spawn an interest in keeping up with the weapons based scene
OG dynasty warriors and bushido blade namely
I didn’t give soulblade the time of day up until Soul calibur in all honesty
