Even as a die hard Genesis owner and fan, I knew by 1996 the PS1 was the much better purchase than the Saturn. Sega had burned so much consumer good will and Sony made seemingly the perfect console for the time and had a ton of 3rd party support right out of the gate.

The PS1 just felt different from other Consoles, bringing Arcade quality convertions of Ridge Racer and Tekken to the home while also making new smash hits like Wipeout, Sony's PlayStation certainly Started with a bang.
The PS1 era is probably my favourite time in gaming, good times.

I wasn't going to get a Playstation at launch. I got the Saturn in May 1995 already during the early release, but right before it launched i got to play a Japanese Playstation and knew i had to get it. I got it on launch day with Battle Arena Toshinden. I was 15 but had a workers permit and bussed tables, so id been saving up for a car. I had to take from that savings, but it was totally worth it, lol.

The 90s was such an insane time for gaming. First going from NES to the Genesis and Super Nintendo to kick the decade off was such a huge leap and then just 5 years later we get the wave of the 3D consoles. Capping off the decade with the wonderful Dreamcast with the ability to connect to the internet and support games like Shenmue that still hold up well today in many areas.

Not only did I pick up a Playstation in 1995 but I got mine on 9/9/95! I actually bought my Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation that same day. I was so excited for the 3D revolution that I jumped in with both feet first. I'm glad I did because too me, the 5th generation was the absolute best.
Addendum- Like you Riggs I had to do some trading to get my consoles. I gave EB my Sega Genesis/Sega CD, Snes, and Atari Jaguar to get both consoles at the same time. My two launch games for the Playstation were Battle Arena Tpshimden and Ridge Racer. For my Saturn I had Virtua Fighter (pack-in), Panzer Dragoon, and Robotica. I did get a memory card for the PSX but I didn't buy a memory cart for the Saturn as it came with internal memory. I wouldn't get a memory cartridge for the Saturn until way into 1996.

I have a fun story regarding Cyber Sled: The last time I went to an arcade in my hometown as a kid they had Cyber Sled set up as a featured game, two sit down positions with dual joysticks each (the joysticks control the left and right engines) and it was 75 cents to play, back when even the sit-down driving games were only 50 cents per play. I took a chance on it though and I turned out to be a NATURAL. Dad left me at the arcade for about 45 minutes and by the time he came back I had only spent $1.50 on two 15-minute-long plays of that machine, about a dollar on some random games, and still had $17.50 worth of quarters in my pocket! :D

Can't wait for the 1996 video about the PS1, which for some reason is considered a controversial year. Half of our disks were demo discs for the longest time. Got them with a magazine at the store, and also got several from eating at Pizza Hut.

Battle Arena Toshinden was my favorite PS1 game for the longest time. SOMEHOW I learned the game disk could also be played on a CD so hey, free soundtrack you could play as a CD!

man I'll never forget the day we got ours! dad pulled us all out of school and we went down to the store to pick ours up! Funny enough I'd seen my tutor at the time doing some shopping so I let her know 'yeah I won't be there today we're kinda doing this other thing' so that's how that happened, LOL! I believe our first games were Battle Arena Toshinden, RIdge Racer and TEKKEN? What I remember of Toshinden is EGM2 had the move list for the Japanese version so when I got to try the in-store demo for the first time I was definitely prepared! we definitely had some of these probably picked up from the local pawn shop.

I'm not 100% sure, but after watching John Riggs for a number of years, I feel like the major attraction is his overwhelming positivity

I have played so much 1extreme and probably even more of 2extreme. Hours of racing around on those rollerblades punching the crap out of the other guys. Honestly the Street fighter the movie the game I would buy it to this day like it looks like it would be pretty good except it's over a hundred bucks. Pretty hilarious how Honda looks like he's wearing a dress

I still have my Playstation box in my home office. It has a sticker on it that says it came included with Battle Arena Toshinden. I remember playing that a lot. Then we got FF7. College work took a back seat. lol

I never had a PS1 and never knew anyone who had one, so interesting (for me) to see the way its early games looked compared to, say, the N64 or the 32X (which someone I knew did have).

I got a PS1 and played the hell out of the demo disc that came with it. I remember it had Intelligent Qube, an F1 racing game, Crash Bandicoot and something else.. My first PS1 was when they initially released it with a Dual Shock controller.. whatever year that was 🤔

I think Ray Man should have had his own tv animated spin off. The first games I owned that come right to mind was Wipe out, War Hawk, Tekken, Crash Bandicoot, and Metal gear solid. I was so proud of myself for beating Metal Gear which I rarely did lol. Road Rash was the first introduction to Kid Rock in the soundtrack that was really freakin good at that time.
