Those Kong Coolers are probably one of the top coolers on the market. What sets them apart are their accessories, handles, and latches. The company that manufactures Kong coolers used to manufacture Yeti coolers before they went overseas to China. Great review.
Our boy scouts LOVE the KONG cooler for camping. Even though it's opened many times, it retains our ice blocks to keep our food cool. Fill gallon size zip bags with water n flat freeze them for the KONG. ICE CUBE plastic containers sit well on the inner rim to sort food in the cooler. Lift out and you can easily n neatly get to the goodies on the bottom. I make n freeze chili, Mac & Cheese, taco meat and chopped vegetables in gallon freezer zip bags. You can boil the freezer zip bags with the chili, Mac n cheese, taco meat AND use the quart size to make omelettes, brownies, cookies n other treats. The KONG coolers have been amazing for our scout troop.
Good Job...I’m definitely getting a Kong. Getting it as much for the durability as the ice retention. I’m sick of cheap coolers that continually break.
What I have learned is I’m just gonna buy a igloo that’s bigger than I want and I’ll buy some five dollar foam board insulation make the lid and walls a bit thicker while I’m at it I will just make a hole in the lid and shoot some from insulation in there Appreciate your research my man
Ive owned a Igloo Ice cube for 10+ years. Lasted me that long without proper care. Keeps ice for 2-3 day’s especially if it’s out of the sun. For the price you can’t beat it. Literally just ordered another one. Great reviews on Amazon btw
Totally agree. I have the same igloo and for the average person doing parties at home the igloo hard to beat. I do have a more expensive lifetime cooler and yes it lasts longer, but for someone who is not going camping for a few days the igloo is more than enough. Mines has held ice for 3 days in west Texas (desert) during the summer.
I agree brother. If you buy a good cooler it is a lifetime investment. I love the Cordova coolers, also American made. I have two 48 quart and i can still carry them.
I knew what you would find, I watched just for the destruction 😁 I had never heard of Kong coolers before, so I'm adding that to my list of coolers I'm looking at for my next purchase.
I still feel that those are over priced. Just because of mostly the foam difference and maybe a little bit thicker plastic. I don't think foam cost that much to be charging three times the amount of the igloo. I have a Coleman 5-day cooler and it's awesome. One thing I truly miss in the newer coolers is either they do not have cup holders or the cup holders are not even an inch deep. I keep my Coleman cooler between my passenger seat and my driver seat in my van and I have four extra cup holders that way.
The cost in not really in the foam, its in the manufacturing process and the time it takes to rotary mold the more expensive cooler. If you dig a bit deeper, their is also a difference between foam and foam. There is high density and regular density, etc... so not do they cost differently for the foam material but also quality and the manufacturing process. Most rotary molded coolers you can only get maybe 2-3 manufactured per hours, vs the blow molded coolers where you can get maybe 15-20 cooler per hour manufactured. Full disclose, I have both type of coolers. The less effective once are space saving and lighter and good for a day or two, the rotary molded expensive are for week or longer trips as well as trip where I need a lot more stuff and I'm further away from grocery stores and accessibility to ice, etc.... Just food for thought.
I wonder if the insulation in the lid is more for keeping the sun from heating the top and warming the cooler too much, rather than for keeping the cold from escaping. (Although it would certainly do both!) it seems like the top of any cooler would always be it’s most vulnerable because it receives the most heat from the elements (and from people sitting on it).
Thanks for the test. Everything looks comparable and proportional to me for what youre paying. I think if you can afford to take the time to look into cooler efficiency & value, you're looking at coolers as "tools" and every tool has its use and place. Weight and space savings are actually more important factors than budget and ice retention on the more affordable coolers in certain situations.
Brand new fresh out of the box , 1 broken latch , and the other won’t stay locked. Been trying to get ahold of Kong for 2 days. No luck. As of right now , this will NOT be the cooler getting mounted on my jet ski for offshore fishing torments. May have to go back to old faithful - the Yeti. And I had such high hopes for a Made in USA company. It sucks that a China made cooler is better than a made in USA
Cool review. The lid of the igloo is clearly the weak link, and where it loses its cool. I will now take my igloo cube cooler, drill some tiny holes in the side of the lid and fill with spray foam insulation. And I will also take a piece of polystyrene insulation and gorilla glue that to the under side of the lid. Should vastly improve the cooler for about $5.
Can you tell if the foam is different in the two coolers? It looks different. It could make a difference as well. Cool vid thanks. I think if the cheap cooler didn't need the foam for structural reasons they probably wouldn't use any at all. it would fall apart without it. Air in the lid can act as an insulator but the thin areas of it would ruin that.
I would like to know what would possess a man two cut a $350 cooler and half. I would think the company who made the cooler would have a model for you to show everyone😢
Wow.... i'm planning to get one. My husband said it is not worth it. I told him, ok. It's just a cooler right? Alright, next time you want a $300 fishing pole or reel, it's a no. Cause it's just a pole and a reel right?
Totally worth the extra 200bucks when your on a 7 day hot wilderness trip, and you still have cold drinks. Cheap coolers won't last 4 days let alone 3 even when they market the coolers as 5 day coolers.
Thank you for the destroying this Kong cooler just for my entertainment.. have you had an otterbox cooler have you compared or done an ice challenge between both
Thanks For the demonstration on the coolers. I really liked what you did and it teaches everybody exactly what goes on with cheaper coolers and I figured as much that cheaper brand coolers have less insulation in the first place but yeah the lids if you can press down on them they usually have nothing in them. It was a good demo. I have never heard of con cooler so . I also don’t think they should be that much more money for more foam. I do like the metal and the dividers/ cutting boards 👍🇨🇦
ive never had an igloo cooler hold ice more than 1day and most of the time it dont hold it that long, which is super bad considering igloo coolers used to be the best there was, but now, the folks in texas that makes these things are trying their hardest to out sorry china
I got my Ice Cube for about $30. (The model with extending arm and wheels). The extending arm is crap, and doesn't release or retract properly. However if the Kong is $300, then that's 10X the price, and I question if it's worth THAT much. (Particularly when I don't go camping or anything like that. The cooler is mostly used for single day trips. I would be interested to know the materials/manufacturing cost of the two. I can't imagine it would be much more than 4X at most to make the Kong cooler. This combined with all the videos of people hacking/improving their cheap coolers by putting foam insulation in the top makes me angry at the price. Not at Kong, but at Igloo and the other cheap cooler manufacturers. They could likely improve their design significantly with only a modicum of cost increase. They could then increase the consumer price on the product by only a small amount (Probably end up being double, but still a much better overall value for the average consumer) and eat Kong's lunch in the process.
If I had to make a wager, it'd be that you're paying for "Made in America" vs. buying something from an enemy country that manufactures things more cheaply (China).
@@AustynSN Good to know. Some or all of Yeti and RTIC brand coolers are made outside of the USA, but didn't know about Igloo. So much for my theory. I guess it's just good ol' supply and demand economics driving up the price!

I dunno...you could have called each company and posted pictures of their manufacturing process and found out what was inside and the thickness of the insulation instead of sending $500 of non biodegradable plastic to the landfill. The difference between the two is obvious

I hope Kong sends you a new cooler. Kong is the best. I just bought the teal 70. Your video is very informative. Kong should be pleased.
Cutting the Kong in half made the cooler gods weep.
The Igloo Ice Cube is my ISUP fishing cooler. I velcro'd a stadium bleacher seat to the lid, and is the prefect height vs width for a SUP seat.

The air gap in the lid does have some insulating properties. Not great, but some. :)
I reckon you're right.
@@BoutenkoFilms Perhaps it is not an air gap, but a vacuum. A vacuum has pretty good insulating properties like with double pane windows.
