- One of the greatest prototype rivalries in American history, the F-22 and F-23 were some of the closest jets to capability with each other that you can get while still having major differences. While we all know who the victor of this competition from the early 90s is, some have argued that the YF-23 had the Raptor beat (the pilots felt this way as well), going to even consider it "A 6th gen jet in a 4th gen world" indicating that it was way ahead of its time in modernization. Ultimately though, the decision was made to have the F-22 become the new Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) a part of the USAF.
Here's my YF-23 and F-22 edit as requested by a friend!

The Pentagon should have just purchased both. That would have made Sense from a technological but also from a military Point of view as the YF23 could have been transfered to the Navy, and replaced the F14 Tomcat.
Meanwhile the F22 Raptor would have been given to the Air Force.
While it definitely would've been a good system for the military as a whole, the F-22 alone caused a huge financial issue, so purchasing fleets of two would be detrimental haha

There was no politics involved. FYI, the YF-22 won against the YF-23 with half of its stealth. The YF-22 was not fully coated with stealth and only around the leading edges, so stealth was debatable. Maneuverability is obviously the YF-22; while speed might go to the YF-23.
