- MESA/Boogie founder, designer and President Randall Smith, Doug West in R&D and guitarist Andy Timmons got together just before the public unveiling of the new Fillmore 50 to discuss what inspired the design and the legendary sounds captured in the vintage-voiced Fillmore series.
#mesaboogie #fillmore50
Out of all the gyutarists there are in this world, this man is in my opinion plays with so much much soul and his melodic phrasing is the best. I know its subjective but man i love Andy’s playing. He’s a great guy and super humble as well.
Randall Smith, very under appreciated for his contributions to "boutique" tube amplifiers.
A true American icon...
Strongly Agree...….
The guys at Fender, Jim Marshall and Randall - pioneers and producers of the finest tones.
I think Mesa has gone beyond being a boutique amp company and Randall's work and influence has inspired many a guitar amp design. People like Jim (Marshall) and Randall should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
total legend
@@Swampster70 Leo fender is in.
Randall Smith - just as significant to the guitar world as is Leo Fender, Les Paul, and PRS. He is always trying to improve, innovate, and deliver new products that customers want.
I hear you!
Add Jim Marshall to that list
It’s crazy that Andy isn’t known more, he’s an amazing player/composer.
Same as Guthrie Govan.. They deserve so much more props, but hey at least Taylor swift is #8 guitarist
4 years ago and I’m just seeing this? Such a fun 18 minutes. Three talented guys geeking out on gear and music. Helps me appreciate my Fillmore 50 even more.
the guy looks sooooo happy seeing Andy play. For an amp designer it must be a real treat hearing everything your creation is capable of, in the right hands
Their passion for tone is infectious. Andy and Boogie are a match made in heaven
Wow, 18 minutes of Andy and a Boogie. Thanks a lot.
I JUST joined a family. The Mesa/Boogie family. I ordered the Fillmore 50 combo. I can't wait 2 have it and try explore it. Mesa/Boogie 4 life.
This proves how well Mesa collaberates with his artists. Absolutely fantastic!
I saw Andy live last summer in a bar with about 150 people. It was mind boggling. There is no one better.
This video could have gone on for five hours, and I would gladly watch it till the very end. Also nice to hear them talk freely about other famous amplifier brands as a point of reference. No taboos here.
"Marshall was just a copy of the ol' Fender tweeds..." big WOW
@@ryantandy307u said that right!
Andy could plug into a Fisher Price and it would sound awesome.
I do love some Mesa amps though.
I used to have a Mark IV which I miss very much.
@Don Prater I was thinking the very same thing. A shoebox guitar and a Fisher Price amp and it would still be a perfect rendition of Electric Gypsy...
True, players with great touch can make even a lesser amp sound great. The key difference, and I think this is true for even great players too, is you have to work harder on a lesser amp. You have to pick just right to find what may be a very small sweet spot, and find where the lesser amps weak points are so you can avoid them. For example, if an amp gets harsh on top if you pick too hard, you’d have to be careful to pick under that intensity. Of course Someone like Andy does this automatically, like her says when they adjust the the controls as he is playing it affects what he chooses to play as he adapts to get the best tones out of what they have done.
So what’s intriguing here is how effortless Andy seems to be playing, along with what he is saying (it doesn’t get harsh on the top end, for example).
Jason Caputo dude, he's just amazing in every aspect of his playing. Very few players that I've seen, ever accomplish that. He is so good.
With all the amp companies that don't want to mention other these big amp companies that are foundations for all these sounds that we love, it's refreshing to see someone acknowledge them. They are paying homage to them and saying they love them. Nice video. Can't wait to get one of these one day.
6:50 I like how he gets the "Stern" legs as soon as he starts playing jazzy.
As mentioned before, having seen this video was the catalyst to my putting this amp on my bucket list. I will never sound like Andy, what a gift… But how much is a dose of inspiration worth? Born in the 60s, I was blessed to hear a lot of players using Fender black face amps live. Never forgot that sound. Along with a lot of my fellow “tone chasers” this amp fills a huge place in my heart. It’s not the be-all, End all, but it dose provide a healthy dose of pure inspiration!
Bring one home for a test drive… You won’t be sorry!
Every video with Andy and the guys from Mesa is a joy to watch.
Gibson would never do this.......This is What Randall Smith was. A man that cared about players and tone.
when he riffs on pinball wizard, that was just amazing
Andy and amazing is a pleonasm.... :-)
Love my Fillmore 50 combo! Just put the knobs at 12 o'clock and this amp sounds amazing. It's also a great pedal plateforme. A great musical companion.
Does it handle high gain pedals fine?
@@mattyounis5636 I don't use a lot of high gain pedals to be honest, but a Rat 2 sounds really good. If you use the Drive mode with lower gain, it stacks really well too.
Low end without getting bloated and tubby....I am a Fender Deluxe guy and this is exactly what I'm looking for! This amp sounds ridiculously good!
I hope we can move past this challenging times fast so we can continue witnessing this kind of conversations. I can can tell when the passion for what you do runs in your veins. Everyone should feel like That! Stay safe folks, cheers from Italy
we love you andy,
and mesa boogie
Superb sounds coming from this amp...love it...want it....gonna save my money to buy it!! Great job guys at Mesa ❤
Absolutely beautiful!! You've knocked it right out the park. Well done guys.
I have this amp and it's the best amp I've ever owned. I have owned all the well known brands, but never a MESA. I demoed many amps looking for one that goes from Fender clean to great sounding overdrive and this one does it. Takes pedals great including overdrive pedals. Well built and thoughtfully designed. I only wish it were smaller. There is a smaller 25 watt version, but I thought the clean on the 50 watt was better. It's not perfect, but close for me!
Inspirational! I really appreciate everything that was said in this demo. The Fillmore sound is incredible. Sometimes really overdriven amps have this layer of static that washes out the sound coming from the instrument but I don’t ever hear that coming from this amp. The low end wasn’t getting blown out and the highs aren’t fizzy. It just sounds very musical. Great playing doesn’t hurt! Man I really have to have this amp now. That’s my sound! That’s the sound I’ve been looking for
My Boogie Bros have been nailing it with the amps lately!
Wow! Really epic guys. I really wasn't expecting the sonic "tour de' force" that we got from this. Notwithstanding Andy's immaculate touch, this was a totally joyous experience. really well done guys. Really...
WOW this should be how every amp is demoed, stellar sound and Andy T. is Fantastic as always!!!
This is a truly wonderful sounding amp, such a varied palet of tones and all great. Could this be THE do it all amp 🤔, I think it just might, well done guys 👏 just stunning tones.
Randall is getting up there, God bless him for what he does. Especially the metal side 🤟
Always enjoy Andy's music! Great demo and Thanks for sharing!
Best advertisement ever, great Amp and great player!!
Leo +Enzo+Randall = "the Spirit of art in technology " 😊I was there in Petaluma in 93 or 94 ? Factory
tour wirh Dave Goodman ..great moments ! thanks to all guys building thé best amp with heart and soul..Andy you are so talent man !!
Superlative amp!!...every time Andy touches the guitar is an holiday in heaven...
I met Andy the first time when he was endorsing Laney amplifiers. I swear he sounded just like he does now, tone wise.
I agree, I ended up putting this amp on my bucket list when I heard this video. I don’t sound like Andy, but my tongue is vastly improved.
Andy, damn. Randy and Doug, thanks for all you have done for amplifier technology. Doug, I have an Electra Dyne that I love dearly, but I need something more manageable to move around. I think this sold me a Fillmore. Randy, enjoy your retirement. You have earned it!!!
Bought a Fillmore 50 combo!
What a great demo!!! Mesa Boogie amps have the most expressive EQ's. The mids control on this is dynamic!
What a great and entertaining guitarist he is. Love this video, it was like going to a concert. His version of "Pinball Wizard" was off the charts, first time I ever saw anyone play it in all chords. Awesome!
Absolutely fantastic sound !!!
One thing that you notice with the best players is that they have their own sound, but can also play numerous other styles very proficiently. I see the comments about a 5w Mesa. I have an express and it attenuates down to 5w. Very under rated amp. Great playing Andy. Great amps Mesa.
My favorite tube amp ever!
Excellent as always from MESA, This seems like a great amplifier in its own right but also extremely well suited for taking pedals, So any players with a decent range of overdrives to all-out modern high-gain monster distortions that they like to use along with their likely equally decent selection of modulations (most of them anyway) and all reverbs and delays piped into the FX loop.
Still, I am not saying that it is a limited hangout for players and better suited to players who own and use numerous pedals.
As that would be doing it a big injustice.
Have to also say that AT makes everything that he plays through sound great and he's a top-notch player too.
Cheers and all the very best
I really like your amps. Saving up to get a fillmore 50 for giging.
Andy Timmons is a fantastic guitarist!! Uau!!! What a sound!!!!!!! This overdrive is beautiful man!!!!
Nobody brought me here, I'm here cuz *MESA* is life.
Love how andy is playing the Pinball Wizard😍😻🎸
what a player ! A true pleasure to watch
As soon as Andy picked up the Strat, I started hearing David Grissom. Everything sounds great on this amp. Love it!!
Just got Fillmore 50 Head and 2x12 Cab. This clip had a lot to do with me forming final decision so thanx for dipping me into 3 years long finance deal
It's gonna be 5 years in March. I still own this amp. Absolutely amazing piece of kit
omg - Andy sounds soooooo good - even without delay and reverb.
I bought a Fillmore 25 in February. The first tube amp I’ve actually owned. Just a bed room player so I wanted an amp with a master volume. Love this amp and would highly recommend it. Great cleans and reverb to heavy crunch. All I need.
Man I love boogies. I never find the right application for them in my love rig but I just keep buying them because they're so beautifully made.
Andy always put a smile on my face!!
Beautiful sound
Top 3 favorite guitarist of all time. What a legend.
Absolutely amazing!
I believe the last time we saw John Petrucci in this room demoing the Mark V Mini...a signature amp followed. Let's hope one is coming with Andy's name on it.
I got this amp last month and holy cow it’s amazing. It’s got both tweed and blackface dna in it to my ears. Thank you Randall, Doug, and to the folks at Mesa Boogie for a fine amp. Cheers 🥂
Incredible tone! And what a guitar player :)
Geez, Andy always plays so much like Andy, I can listen to him all day.
Truly remarkable achievement. Doesn't seem possible that so many great tones could come out of one amp. Granted, Andy's playing is perfect for showcasing this amp, but damn!
Great sound and playing!
The strat made the amp come alive!
I’ve owned a dozen Mesas, and this is by far my favorite. Of course Andy could play one of those solid state toy amps you get in a starter pack and make it sound amazing, but WOW - beautiful tone, clean or dirty.
Mesa Boogie do it again!! Great stuff!
I love all the adjectives for guitar tone. Love it, they all make sense. I think Andy's clean tone is slightly puffy and airy.
this video was the deciding factor when I picked my new amp... I brought it home today and I am overjoyed... I understand this video has post production done and even still this amp was exactly what I was expecting when I turned it on... it sounds really good with everything at 12 o'clock lol... its a better amp than the Friedman Twin Sister I had at half the price. its a no brainer.
WATCHING ANDY AND DOUG TOGETHER. THEY ARE LIKE BEST FRIENDS. BOTH SMILE FROM EAR TO EAR WHEN GRAET TONE
IS MADE
Just heard welcome home and I see why you guys like him , amazing expression out of his guitar
I have been using Boogies since 1988.My first one was a Iic,Hardwood,EQ,etc... which I had with me when I moved to London, where I swapped it against a MKIIIc head w a 2x10" Marshall enclosure, after that I had a Triple Rectifier which I sold in 1995 to pay Peter Diezel to custom build me Blueface VH4 which I still own today. 3 or 4 years ago I was lucky enough to acquire THE LAST KING SNAKE in Germany.Drove 100 km to buy it in the shop. I love it to death. It is the best Boogie EVER!!!!
Andy put me on the Mesa Boogie . What perfect marriage between the two !
When Andy switched to a Strat, that tone is a gob of goodness. sweet and gnarly
I’ve watched this video SO many times wanting this amp badly and played this amp locally many times and it’s my dream amp only other amp in my dream category that I played and loved equally is the soldanoSLO 30 which is way more expensive and no reverb. Andy’s playing is phenomenal so is that amp
Wonderful tone, congrats!
I'm a Mark-series guy, but damn I love all of Mesa's amp demos.
I love Marshall, Orange, Soldano, and Peavey, bug Ill always keep the Mesas and the Fenders around.
Andy Timmons.....his playing is so tasteful it's just insane.
Andy is such a special guitar player
Beautiful!!!
This is going to be apart of my sound. I’m saving up for a good one
Stunning tones! I wonder how loud the amp was in the room during the recording of this video (in decibels, not setting on the Volume knob).
it's got that warm knock on the low end that only power tubes into real guitar speakers delivers. really sounds great.
Good video and Kudos for Mesa to actually having balls to speak freely about other amp manufacturers such Fender or Marshall, and not saying the usual “F-Style, American type” or “British type”... There’s nothing wrong to pay tribute to previous brands that made (/make also) great products. Nothing wrong either of using it as inspiration or starting point for your own development. What matters in the end is the result of your product. And if it’s good, you won’t have trouble to find customers. I’ve use the Mark V (90w) in studio for a while and it was one of my favorite amps to the point I’m gonna get a Mark V:25 (since I prefer smaller heads).
The team at MB and Andy make a great combo! Metaphorically and literally 😎
I've heard some amp demos where the tone comes across as kind of dull and flat. But in the hands of a master like Andy Timmons, you really hear how awesome this amp can sound. His clean tones are heavenly.
Wow, best sounding clean amp I can remember.
You should do an andy timmons signature amp
The blackstar is his adoptive son 😏👊🏼👍🏻🎸
Andy quit Laney as they were working on his signature amp. From his numerous interviews, the Lonestar IS his signature amp. You could slap "Andy Timmons" on it, there would be no difference. His favorite combination is the Lonestar 100 watts head with the 2 x 12 rectifier cabinet.
That being said, in almost all the latest shows I have seen of him, he uses Lonestar combos, at least two, with external cabinets.
Something that changed too, he no longer uses the drive channel of his amplifiers. His singing tone is now exclusively obtained with pedals in front of the clean channel. He said this combination offers more subtlety and variation options than the traditional dirt channel plus drive.
@@p6x2 ....that's right. Digitalized clean setting is always best I can conjure up!
Pisk Six maybe a modified lone star with no dirty channel since he never uses it anyway then
@@ajlsrv5490 That sounds good to me. But I would not trust Andy to stick to the clean channel exclusively. Since I have known him, his choices have evolved with his tone quest. At least, he stuck to that one guitar, the AT100 prototype; but amp wise, he seems to have gone from the 100 Lonestar head + dual rectifier cabinet, to the Lonestar combo. He is still stereo, before with the Lonestar and the Stiletto, and now with two Lonestar combos. I am going to make a video of the photos I took at his last concert, where he used more gear than usual. Andy Timmons and the Electric Truth. There, he also added a Lonestar special for the EL 34's. So back to a signature amplifier, it could be a dual 6L6 and EL 34 switchable?
I tried it yesterday, 50 W. The 50W setting sounds better than the 25W even at low volume. Never heard such a superb crystaline clean. »Reminescent of Eric Johnson. I did not like the traditional ''mid'' sound from Boogie, but this time, they nailed the perfect clean. With a Strat, it is angelic!
I love the sound of Mesa Boogie amps in the right hands such as Andy here!
But I have to say, I've been playing guitar over 50 years I am really a Fender guy at heart but I love an AC30 kind of thing too.
I have never been able to get a decent tone out of a Mesa Boogie except for the Blue Angel series that they put out in the 90s.
Also I work at Guitar Center and I'm starting to Vibe with a California Tweed 20-watt version. That is really a sweet amp!
I've been playing the Fillmore 50 as well and I can't get remotely close to the tones that and he's getting here. And I have to say I'm a decent guitar player and I know how to get tone out of an amp but Mesa boogies have been a head-scratcher for me for decades!
I wish I could sit with the designers for a couple of hours to really get the ins-and-outs of these complex amplifiers.
What a treat that would be right? Thanks so much for the upload! It's always a thrill to hear Andy play!
Iv played Atleast 4 of the fillmores 50s and they all sound very different from each other with drastically different levels of gain and distortion.
One was fairly bright and had a hard edge to clipping and a tighter bass.
The others have been various shades of thumpy and dark , some with lots of distortion and sustain but very muffled . Another was pretty thick in the kids and clear sounding but didn’t have much gain in comparison or sustain.
I think my fav was the first with the gritty distortion on tap, it had much more dimension than the rest.
Kinda annoying , I almost bought it but it sold, I didn’t realize they’d vary this much until after it sold.
I thought the other one I had tried next to it, that was used, was maybe “bad” sounding and that’s why it was a used item. But the used one doesn’t sound terrible it just wasn’t as good, nor are the others Iv tried, which is why I haven’t bought one .
Also the identical channels seem to vary a bit too, one is usually brighter and less gainy.
They sound too different for me to buy one new from factory. Ifi was rich if just buy a couple since they almost sound like totally different types of amps sometimes
Beautifully Dynamic...….T O N E !!!!!!!
That first tone is beautiful and so classy
Dear @MESA/Boogie
could you please upload another version with the sound of the room? No direct into mixing, cause I love the live sound of the amp and his playing!
great sounding amp!
Andy is the man
This amp is freaking incredible.
Wonderful amplifier!!!
Great video! :-D
SOUNDS REALLY GOOD 🎼🤘👍🎸
Sounds PHENOMENAL.
Yep. Yall just sold me this amp
