Thank you very much, very well explained and the only tutorial i found to be working 10/10 edit: (also works with a chromebook R11 wich i used so most likely works on any chrome device)
Many thanks, it worked! Note for anyone using ASUS Chromebox 3 (CN65) TEEMO: As per the mrchromebox supported device table it requires both screw and CR50, however the CR50 steps can and should be omitted. Otherwise, by following the CR50 steps you might get into trouble as it happened to me and end up stuck without being able to open the dev console anymore (with ctrl+alt+f2) after using the "sudo gsctool -a -o" command. The solution for this is Turning ON the OS verification again (which will wipe the data) then turn it OFF once again and start from scratch, which will allow you to open the dev console again. Omit the CR50 steps and just follow this video.
If you see this, can you tell me how it's worked out? I have the same device, and am thinking of doing the same as you. After I flashed the firmware, I shut down Chromebox. Now I can't get it boot from USB. Mine is ASUS CN60. How to boot it from USB now? Please help! Thanks.
Sounds like you might need to enter BIOS when you turn your system on, and make sure that your USB port is set as your boot drive. You'll need to press ESC when prompted to enter BIOS. I've done this successfully with an ASUS CN60, so it can certainly be done. Let me know how you go please Jason.

You can find the link here: mrchromebox.tech/#devices And skip to the section "Disabling WP on CR50 Devices via CCD". "WP" is short for "write-protection". Good luck and let me know now you go. I haven't actually tried de-googling a Chromebox with CR50 write protection myself yet. By the way, most of the credit here goes to MrChromebox.tech... not me... I just followed his steps and made this video! :P
Also, the model number of your Chromebox is actually a CXI3 ("I" for igloo), not a CX-thirteen. That might help you find more information about your device, should you need it.
@@NewAgeThinking. Thanks King, I appreciate the compliment. Always happy to help out. Notes like these keep me motivated to make more videos like this one.
The ASUS Chromebox 4 uses CR50 write protection, so there's no screw to remove. It's a different process. Details for how to handle that are found here: mrchromebox.tech/#devices (Hat tip to Mr Chromebox, once again)

It looks like there are some display-related issues specific to your model of Chromebox. MrChromebox.tech says "STUMPY - The VGA output (via DVI port) is not functional. The DisplayPort outputs don't seem functional under Windows, but work fine pre-OS and under Linux."

@@codyq6245 I don't, so I had a look at MrChromebox.tech's website and couldn't find the answer to your question there. I've sent the admin there an email, so we'll see what he has to say. Hang in there!
@@codyq6245 Okay, so here's what MrChromebox had to say in response: "This is pretty standard for devices which are enrolled/managed, either educational or corporate. The "correct" way to do it is to have the managing/owning entity de-enroll the device. In practice that's often not possible, for a variety of reasons. On older (pre-2017) devices, simply flashing the firmware directly (using a USB programmer, treating the device as if it were bricked) is the easiest solution. On 2017+ devices with the CR50/Google Security Chip, this is often not possible, and nothing to my knowledge can be done in that case." I looked up the CXI3, and your Chromebox uses the CR50 write protection as well as the screw, so you might not be able to de-google your device afterall, I'm sorry to say. The only way forward may be to get the access information you need to unlock the device from its previous owner.
Just did this to a Chromebox 3 and it worked. Installed ubuntu on it and I can use it to do anything and everything :) However, my other chromebox, CN62 doesn't boot anymore. Power light is on but no image on display. Even after waiting an hour there's nothing.

Yes Sean, the process and principles are the same regardless of which operating system you want to install. Before you install Cloud Ready, I recommend you make sure your SSD has a capacity greater than 16GB. Many Chromeboxes only have 16GB storage inside and for Cloud Ready, it's a good idea to switch to 32GB or more. You can pick up a suitable SSD via eBay using the affiliate links in my video description if you'd like to help support this channel. Good luck with your upgrade.

Actually Freddy, the best thing you can do in your case is contact MrChromebox.tech ... he's very helpful and responsive to emails. If you have ChromeOS for your device with Brunch ready to flash, I can't see this creating any problems... but ask I'd the area expert first ;)

I’m Using the Acer Chromebox Cx13 and has CR50 write protection. I can’t find the extra steps on your website. Where can I find it in the site?
You can find the link here: mrchromebox.tech/#devices
And skip to the section "Disabling WP on CR50 Devices via CCD".

@@codyq6245 I don't, so I had a look at MrChromebox.tech's website and couldn't find the answer to your question there. I've sent the admin there an email, so we'll see what he has to say. Hang in there!
@@codyq6245 Okay, so here's what MrChromebox had to say in response:
"This is pretty standard for devices which are enrolled/managed, either educational or corporate. On 2017+ devices with the CR50/Google Security Chip, this is often not possible, and nothing to my knowledge can be done in that case."
I looked up the CXI3, and your Chromebox uses the CR50 write protection as well as the screw, so you might not be able to de-google your device afterall, I'm sorry to say. The only way forward may be to get the access information you need to unlock the device from its previous owner.
i see thanks anyways for the info. Really do appreciate it.
This is the same with the i7 version right?
Yep, that's right!

I have an old Asus Chromebox CN60. I'm going to try to turn it into an OpenMediaVault. Thanks for the video.
Hello will this also apply for cloudready install?
Yes Sean, the process and principles are the same regardless of which operating system you want to install.
Before you install Cloud Ready, I recommend you make sure your SSD has a capacity greater than 16GB. Many Chromeboxes only have 16GB storage inside and for Cloud Ready, it's a good idea to switch to 32GB or more.
You can pick up a suitable SSD via eBay using the affiliate links in my video description if you'd like to help support this channel.
Good luck with your upgrade.
So, if you have an old chromebox which doesn't get updates anymore, would you suggest using this method for Flex OS ?
Sorry, I haven't tried Flex, so I can't offer an opinion on it. Good luck, let me know what you settle on.
can I put another Chrome OS on my CN-62 with Intel I7 after flashing the ROM? I want to flash it with chrome OS with brunch that will give me the play store.
Hmm, not sure... ChromeOS uses a weird partitioning structure that I had trouble replicating using cloning software. Perhaps there is another Linux distro that you could install that gives you access to Play Store apps and products?
Actually Freddy, the best thing you can do in your case is contact MrChromebox.tech ... he's very helpful and responsive to emails. If you have ChromeOS for your device with Brunch ready to flash, I can't see this creating any problems... but ask I'd the area expert first ;)

Hi Taipan, good question. The process is slightly different if you only have a wi-fi connection... In that case, you'll need to enter ChromeOS, and enter a terminal/shell environment from there, then use the same set of command lines. I have a 2014 HP G1 chrombox. I can NEVER GET INTO DEVELOPER MODE. I have tried 30+ times, watched your video and others, and all articles on the WEB. I bought it on ebay and suspect the firmware was undated by the school so that I could NEVER get into developer mode. Does this make sense. Do I have a fine working chromebox which I cannot load a linux distro on? Any thoughts appreciated. Thank you in advance.
I'm not 100%, but for me I had to open my Chromebox and detach the bios battery for thirty seconds and hold the power button. That cleared the developer mode lock.
Thank you VERY MUCH for this helpful tutorial. Any chance you could cover installing a dual boot system on a Chromebox (Ubuntu and ChromeOS) ?
Hmm, ChromeOS is a bit of a pain, it uses a really weird partitioning system and doesn't share nicely. What do you need ChromeOS for? If you just want to run a few apps, there are Android emulators available.

Will windows 11 work
That will depend on the specifications of your Chromebox. Which one do you have?
Can I ask what operating system did you decide to use for this? Is it the CloudReady from Neverware?
I've tried Ubuntu 18 and 20 with great success on these Chromeboxes, but you have many, many options available once you crack out of the ChromeOS constraints. Please let me know how you go with alternative Linux distros.
@@danimationstips Thank you mate! I'll try them out. Was actually looking towards Neverware's CR... would this be something you would consider yourself too? :)
@@jtltrading2899 Choosing your operating system really depends on what you plan to do with your computer. CloudReady seems to be a good choice if you want easy access to Google services and you want to collaborate with people who use ChromeOS devices. For example, there are some Linux distributions that are geared towards use as media servers and other specialty purposes. Ubuntu is a good, accessible all-rounder and a good substitute for Windows or MacOS. GalliumOS is the best choice for Chromebooks, as their soundcards are not supported by some Windows versions and some other Linux distros.
I hope this is helpful! Good luck!
