One of my fondest gaming memories was in DarkRP on Downtown V2 way back in the late 00s. The server was a fairly normal one with pretty chill admins who generally allowed scenes to play out to their conclusion before taking action for rules violations. I was a CP (Civil Protection AKA Half Life 2 cop) and fairly new to Gmod. The server, as many do, soon became plagued by a RDMer (Random Deathmatching is the act of shooting other players at random in a game type where combat is heavily de-emphasized, such as sandbox or roleplay). Unlike most RDMers who get blasted by an experienced CP over and over and eventually leave or get banned, this guy was actually pretty good. Good enough to outfox most of the CPs. Located in the apartments next to spawn, this guy continuously took pot shots at players spawning in for a good 25 minutes or so. CPs began making creative use of props to try and protect the spawn area, and eventually a small team of us made it into the apartments. He managed to dodge our fire long enough to move to the corner apartment, out into the street, and into the small basement under the corner shop across from the police station. Another citizen, presumably a friend of his, had pretty thoroughly barricaded the basement area. By this time, the admins had decided to join in and forced themselves and some of their friends onto the CP faction and started handing out better Counter Strike Source weapons to the CPs who up to that point had been slumming with HL2 pistols and maybe an SMG. Once the "search warrant" was approved, we battered down the props only to find the friend begging the admins to not ban him and the perp having run into the sewers. The experienced CPs split us up into teams and it was here that I first learned that Downtown v2 had a sewer system. Teams began to comprehensively search the sewers. We found many of the usual suspects in the sewers with shady deals and money printers and it was kind of hilarious for them to freak out at the sight of us only to realize we were hunting someone else. I don’t remember exactly where in the sewers we caught up to the shooter, but once we heard over the CP radio where he was, the experienced CPs all seemed to know the fastest way to get to that exact spot, and the entirely of the CP faction arrived more or less all at once, blocking off all routes of escape for the shooter. After some brief pleas for him to surrender, it became clear that he intended to go out in a blaze of glory. The room was lightly fortified with props for cover, but we quickly worked around it and injured him pretty badly, at which point he decided to make a run again. I very distinctly remember him turning around, only to be staring down the barrel of an SG550 auto sniper from CS:Source. The admins banned the guy shortly afterward. It was a pretty remarkable experience and moments like that opened up my eyes to the potential of roleplay as a play style.
I think stuff like that is really cool. If you watch The Librarian's video on RP Union City, he describes it as a map "made for police chases". If more admins and players were chill enough to let things play out, RP would have a much better reputation. Sadly, many admins use RP to go on power trips instead. I think situations should be allowed to play out in the majority of cases, so long as they don't pose a direct or indirect threat to anyone. And by "threat", I mean like an actual threat to the player. Not their character, but the player themselves. So things like DOXing, Stutter Torture, making credible threats to hurt or kill the player or people close to them, stuff like that. The same goes for people trying to DDOS and/or crash the server. People doing any of those things should be banned, no exceptions. But throwing shoes at people? Mic spam? RDM? Under normal circumstances, that stuff should be allowed.
I had a trip reading this due to the fact that you said “me and the rest of the CP” I’m so sorry but I couldn’t read any of that with a straight face. Great experience you had though.
most of the horror maps i played (with friends cuz playing alone is boring) made me laugh my lungs out. thats because i not only did hilarious stuff on them with my friends but also broke the maps like all hell, sometimes even crashing the whole server we were in
@Mercury Still, like it was said in the video, the problem wasn't somebody else "stealing" their ideas, it was the attitude of the development team. Maybe it was for the better that GMod was the game that went on to become the more popular game; even if JBMod was more popular, I imagine the team eventually ruining the game somehow. After all, they were given the chance to make it into steam and they ruined it.
the "Semper" model appears when a player who is stuck at the "TEAM_CONNECTING" or the "TEAM_UNASSIGNED" state, instead of moving on to a normal one. This usually happens as a result of a Lua error, or some form of addon conflict. That probably doesn't explain every "appearance", however it does explain many of them being on old and likely poorly coded servers.
While NextBots are misused as noisy jpegs, they can be made into some pretty interesting NPCs. At some point in the past, I was working on making “strategic” stalkers. I’m not very good at coding, so they were clunky and barely functional. But it just goes to show how they can be used.

Wasn't expecting this, tbh. I'm the co-founder and leader of the ABMC and this video was brought to my attention by one of the members. The Gmod Meta was mostly fun, but always had a toxicity to it. A large number of people involved decided to leave the meta in order to move away from those sorts of environments, and thank god we did. DDosing was always a threat, as well as Doxing. I always pressured the others to get VPNs as some resemblance of security. Overall, I did have a lot of fun with my group and our allies. Some of us still mess around every now and again, but a good number of us are still friends. Hell, the other night we were playing Halo together. We've all made a lot of friends through faction wars, and some even found security within the community. I was always impressed by the faction members, and I was always glad to see what machines they'd come up with next. Thank you for bringing us to light, and talking about it respectively, because some of us did put plenty of years into it. Thanks for the video, man.
Oh man, this brought back a lot of memories! I would love to see your take on the history of the RP gamemode(s), starting all the way from The Specialists mod to the modern CityRP still around today on for example Fearless. As they started way before GMod was a thing and almost acts as a complement to the GMod development history I think it would make for an interesting video!
Nextbots or "sanic clones" may be very simple but with the right amount of chasing jpegs and friends can make for some really fun scenarios. Coming back to that hacker, i have encountered someone quite close to him, i was playing on a random server and someone joined and said "wanna see magic?", everybody was like ok, yeah and the server crashed, i tried to join another server and couldn't, i wanted to play on a singleplayer and couldn't, i had to reset my pc and only then i could play g'mod
More facts about Cheaple: He was originally going to be a full model before being relegated to the cheap version exclusively way back in 2002. Couldn't tell you why. His face actor, Warren Slough, has unfortunately passed a number of years back, as well. It's a tragic thing, really. One last part, his model was used for a bunch of different "cheap" citizens early in Half-Life 2's development, such as the Stenographer chasm worker and a cheap version to the "orange collar" rendition of the citizen. Idk what standing those jbmod guys had about "stolen physgun code." Their physgun is literally a direct port of the Half-Life 2 beta leak physgun. That's not even hyperbole, it is the *exact* same physgun from the leak. They likely just took its cpp file from the leaked 2003 source code and dropped it into the hl2 2004 modding code.
I was in one of the meta groups called AEF. It was good fun until certain clans went on campaigns of harassment and doxxing. The toxicity pretty much drove our group and our allies to other games.
I CANNOT WAIT DUDE THIS WILL BE A BANGER I JUST KNOW IT edit: i think it was great! it touched up on some stuff and introduced new things, thanks for making this man!
On the Sanic Clones, probably the most unique ones are the ones that changes the behavior of the nextbot from the rest. Most notably, Gargitron, which was made by a RUclipsr with the sole purpose to be as terrifying as possible. They have added a hiding, a stalking, and an ambush mechanic to the usual Sanic nextbot behavior while making Gargitron. This was to make Gargitron as unpredictable as possible.
I shit you not, I found a “semper” in a starwars rp. This guy got put in jail by shock as he died. He respawned with his model glitched as the “semper” the model. He could do everything normally still so I brushed it off as a goof with the models since the battle droids we use on the servers look some what similar to “semper”. Didn’t know “semper” was a thing until now. Thought this was pretty cool now with “semper” being thing I know about now.
@@CrummySpingus I haven't been active for a couple of years on gmod, so I'm not entirely sure which groups are active and such. Your best bet is to join ACF servers on Sandbox and ask around and learn
42:05 Well that explains it all actually. The physics engine is trying to simulate the event horizon of a black hole when nobody coded the poor thing to do that. It's close enough to real physics that it manages to share some obvious similarities, but the simplicity of the representation is also betrayed because it doesn't break down further.
I was enlisted in some faction combat during my earlier years on gmod, around 2014-2015 i was in a faction That called themselves The US Army [can't remember this part], It wasn't all that original but i was a crazy 13 year old who played too much gmod and cod (not toxic mind you) who just kinda shot things good in which they invited me since i helped them in a server i joined. It was about 12 vs 12 in that fight but we ultiamtely came out on top and claimed that server for ourselves. I spent the next year going up the ranks until I was a Sgt or Ssgt and I had fought for them a lot whenever i wasn't doing anything in school. By the end of it if i'm not mistaken we had racked up 2-3 servers for ourselves and at our peak we had 5 but we stretched our forces too much so we stayed in those 2-3. The win loss ratio was something like 16 - 18 and 6 stalemates not the best but good enough to keep control of a few servers. Our main rivals (can't remember their name) constantly came at us with machines they built but not great tactics. The dynamic was; We had tactics and understanding of the maps we were holding along with superior aim, they had better buildings and Complex vehicles on their side so we often went back and forth. We had competition with a few other factions but they our main advisary. I spent only a year with them and left since school was starting to hit harder. So yea the faction warfare is a fun thing that you could prolly find on public servers today if you look hard enough in the sandbox section, if anything i said sounds cool or fun to you, try it out it was a blast and hell make your own faction with some friends you can have some good times.
I never played RP servers... May I ask what do you mean with the whole "claiming servers" thing? Like if you win a battle the admins of the server hand their admins rights to you? Sorry I'm so confused

Great video! As someone who has recently started playing Garry's Mod, its nice to know some of the history, "lore," and whatnot of the game. It's all very interesting to see
A detailed note about v_models versus c_models from a Source modder. You're correct that v_models often come with pre-made hands that can't be swapped out for new player models, but as far as I know, that doesn't necessarily have to be the case. The hand limitation was certainly one of Valve's reasons for developing c_models in several of their games (a practice that Facepunch would later adopt for Gmod), but there are several other big reasons: 1. Decreasing file size. In old Source games like HL2 and early Garry's Mod, all weapons had two separate models: a World Model, or w_model, and a View Model, or v_model. The v_model was extremely high quality and only seen in first person, and the w_model was seen out in the world by everyone. In other words, you saw your gun's v_model, and every other player saw you holding a w_model. This allowed the guns in players' hands to be highly detailed, but it came with a cost: every single weapon had two models. Nowadays, every weapon just has one Complete Model, or c_model. Much more efficient! 2. Increasing consistency. In the old days, weapons often looked different between 1st and 3rd person -- the Revolver's w_model in HL2 looked ugly as heck, and the Demoman's sticky launcher in TF2 used to have a v_model that was MIRRORED left to right from the w_model (before it became a c_model). That lack of polish can make things feel weird. 3. Decreasing work load. View Models often have giant gaping holes on their right sides because the player will never see that side in first person. This means that if a dev ever wants to update a game with, say, a weapon inspecting animation, they'd either have to animate in such a way that the hole never shows, or fill in the hole by updating the v_model. Making a single model per weapon is less work all around, so why not keep it simple? Some people don't like c_models because they tend to be less detailed in first person than v_models -- compare the TF2 flamethrower's original v_model to its later c_model and weep with me. However, making and maintaining a single 7/10 model is much easier than dealing with a 3/10 model and a 10/10 model, so I think it's a smart change overall.
Its really nice to see them give us awareness, as they are really fun and a lot of my friends including I have been in a few of these conflicts, either to watch or to be some of the participants of the wars.
The thing about JBmod is that JB didn't create the website or the accusations, he moved on and some troll (it's been awhile so I forgot his name) created the site to have some "fun"
You can get a similar effect to source machines by putting a bunch of thrusters on the flat sides of a chain link fence. First they start rippling like waves, then CHAOS Actually, its been literal years since i played Gmod, there is a small chance they patched that
Actually “escape the box” works! Well, at least for me Also, to add something: There was a “Mirrors” addon in the workshop that spawned a lot of props, lagging your game. And also spammed the chat with insults and other stuff. I think it was removed, but it was on the first page of the workshop for a day or two, maybe even three.
41:50 Most of the weird behaviour here is just a result of source having a hard time handling really large forces mixed in with some stuff designed to stop physics objects from crashing your game/lagging you unnecessarily. While I couldn't replicate the results in the video entirely myself I believe the reason some props don't do anything until you physgun or gravgun them is just because the props haven't been updated yet, so they aren't actually being forced down by the new gravity immediately. You can sorta replicate this effect without using massive gravity values by putting a prop on a plate and then nocolliding said plate. Unless the prop was already moving it'll stay in place. You can also move it around a tiny bit and still have it stay up but if you move it too much it'll realize the prop beneath it isn't solid and fall. The erratic movement of props after they've been moved around a bit is because of the fact they're being forced into a surface with a lot of force, which the game is trying to resist. You can see this in normal gameplay too if you just shove a prop or vehicle into the ground really hard, as once you let go they'll fly into the air (though the difference here being with max gravity they can't fly into the air and as a result just jitter about on the ground) The props disappearing seemingly randomly is something gmod does to prevent props/contraptions that are "having a bad time" so to speak from lagging/crashing your game. You can actually turn this off using the console command sv_crazyphysics_remove 0. As for the props spinning in place/not being affected by any forces, I'm not actually 100% sure what causes it but my guess would be that the game just refuses to apply force to an object after it exceeds a certain amount. This would mean objects wouldn't move around at all but would still allow them to spin/change angle as gravity doesn't affect rotational force. (As for what causes them to spin in the first place though I have no real idea).
I imagine the physics just breaks on the spinning objects Wouldn't be the first time i've played a game where wack-ass physics literally permanently breaks the collision of an object But who knows, certainly not me, not for sure anyways
Most of these issues are likely caused by floating point inaccuracies. The Source engine uses single-precision floating points (stored as 32-bit binary) for representing the coordinate system and other vectors. Every object (entity) has a position, velocity and other properties are stored as floating points. As your move further away from the map origin- which is (0, 0)-the physics begin to break down due to lack of precision. Physics objects will begin to "act" wonky, as well as other elements that rely on floating points (such as the position and direction of the phys gun beam). The further you go away from the origin, the more exaggerated this will be. This will also have a similar effect if you set the gravity to a very high value, as the value is used in equations for calculating the physics position, etc. This is a limitation of integers and floating points in computers. If you run the engine in 64-bit, Source will still use single-precision floating points, because it's faster and requires less memory, but you will find that other things will work properly.
I remember when I was really young I saw these ARG maps on YT, and years later I kept searching for them knowing they were real and coming with no evidence in the end. It's so cool to see I wasn't insane.

I guess JBMod is Yandere Simulator before Yandere simulator. Delay patches, angry when others got popular, and lies.
I think Jbmod devs just trolls
the "Semper" model appears when a player who is stuck at the "TEAM_CONNECTING" or the "TEAM_UNASSIGNED" state, instead of moving on to a normal one. This usually happens as a result of a Lua error, or some form of addon conflict. That probably doesn't explain every "appearance", however it does explain many of them being on old and likely poorly coded servers.

Hello fellow potato

While NextBots are misused as noisy jpegs, they can be made into some pretty interesting NPCs. At some point in the past, I was working on making “strategic” stalkers. I’m not very good at coding, so they were clunky and barely functional. But it just goes to show how they can be used.

More facts about Cheaple: He was originally going to be a full model before being relegated to the cheap version exclusively way back in 2002. Couldn't tell you why. His face actor, Warren Slough, has unfortunately passed a number of years back, as well. It's a tragic thing, really. Idk what standing those jbmod guys had about "stolen physgun code." Their physgun is literally a direct port of the Half-Life 2 beta leak physgun.

A detailed note about v_models versus c_models from a Source modder.
You're correct that v_models often come with pre-made hands that can't be swapped out for new player models, but as far as I know, that doesn't necessarily have to be the case. The hand limitation was certainly one of Valve's reasons for developing c_models in several of their games (a practice that Facepunch would later adopt for Gmod), but there are several other big reasons:

You can get a similar effect to source machines by putting a bunch of thrusters on the flat sides of a chain link fence. First they start rippling like waves, then CHAOS
Actually, its been literal years since i played Gmod, there is a small chance they patched that
Actually “escape the box” works! Well, at least for me
Also, to add something: There was a “Mirrors” addon in the workshop that spawned a lot of props, lagging your game. And also spammed the chat with insults and other stuff. I think it was removed, but it was on the first page of the workshop for a day or two, maybe even three.
41:50
Most of the weird behaviour here is just a result of source having a hard time handling really large forces mixed in with some stuff designed to stop physics objects from crashing your game/lagging you unnecessarily.
You can see this in normal gameplay too if you just shove a prop or vehicle into the ground really hard, as once you let go they'll fly into the air (though the difference here being with max gravity they can't fly into the air and as a result just jitter about on the ground)
The props disappearing seemingly randomly is something gmod does to prevent props/contraptions that are "having a bad time" so to speak from lagging/crashing your game.
I imagine the physics just breaks on the spinning objects
Wouldn't be the first time i've played a game where wack-ass physics literally permanently breaks the collision of an object
But who knows, certainly not me, not for sure anyways
