  • The hype has been building for me on these brand new Nitto Nomad Grappler Tires since they arrived on my doorstep. Finding a tire with quiet and comfortable on-road manners but still offers you the ability to feel confident taking your Outback Wilderness into some difficult terrain has been one of the most asked questions since we got our Outback Wilderness. In this video, I go over all of the specs of the newest addition to the Nitto lineup and do side-by-side comparisons of the Yokohama Geolander, BF Goodrich KO2 as well as the Nitto Nomad Grappler. We also talk gas mileage with all three of these tires as well as tread patterns and all the information you will need to decide which tire is right for your new Subaru Outback Wilderness.

      I run that same tire on my outback wilderness with buddy's running the KO2 and we all get stuck in the same spots. I seen no advantages with the KO2 over the AT3W but where the bug difference is the quiet road performance advantage that the AT3 has over the KO2, no reason for me to even consider the Nitto .

    Just came across your channel.
    The main reason I bought the OBW is that it has a real spare tire.
    There is two things that younger drivers NEED TO DO.
    1. Check the air pressure at least once a month, it WILL go flat .
    2. Include your spare tire in the tire rotation that is a must if not you will damage your transmission when you have to use the
    un rotated tire .
    As of this date 9-24-22 , I get 22mph in the city Reno,Nv , average speed is 35-75 mph.
    On highway 28 mpg speed 65-75 mph,
    air pressure is 36 psi using nitrogen in all 5 tires , checked pressure after one month with manager ( Big O Tires ) .
    No loss of tire pressure.

      @@FracturedNinja Oh yes, the Wildpeaks are way better. The Geolanders are fine, if you don't mind the tires/tread grabbing a zillion rock pebbles, into the tires tread spaces, then as you increase speed on a normal road, and hearing the ping, bonk, bank, etc. as every pebble dislodges and flies up under your SUV. It's beyond annoying.

  • @jamesofsandiego
    @jamesofsandiego Месяц назад +1

    My theory about the popularity of the Geolander is that it's a tire the manufacturer can use that has acceptable fuel economy for all of the regulations that are imposed while at the same time not being a complete embarrassment off road. But in the end you wind up with a tire that's not particularly good at either. I'd rather take an extremely small hit on fuel and get better performance with Bf Goodrich Trail Terrains or Nitto Nomads. So I agree with your choice.

  • @LeNimph

    I've been running these nittos for almost year now. I love them but the only thing I have to compare them to is the terrible ecopia tires that come stock on the Forester. They were a general performance boost all around minus the small mpg lost. It performs surprisingly well in loose dirt and sand.

    I just went. thru the whole tire thing because my Toyo All Terrains on my 2021 Crosstrek had to all be replaced because I got a sidewall puncture at 25k miles .. And BFG just came out with a 17" KO2 for the Trek .. 225/65 17" 8ply with 3 ply sidewall. All the other tires are pMetric unless they are an 'LT' type and have only a two ply sidewall .. look at the small tire makeup on the tires. The difference in weight between the Toyo All Terrains and BFG's .. same exact size, width, height, etc .. the weight difference was 10 lbs per tire! 1 trip to Moab and 4 trips to Death Valley .. and in DV I only do the dirt roads. All those trips were on the Toyo's .. no complaints just not as heavy duty a tire as the KO2's pretty much as you have stated in this video. My other rig is on it's 3rd set of KO2's .. 285/75 16" (33's) which are 'LT' type and carry a 10 ply rating with a 3 ply sidewall .. never have had an issue with them. 🤠

The Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail was hands down the best tire I ever had on a Subaru. Less aggressive than your Nitto maybe, but still a good middle-of-the-road tire and super capable off road. They kicked the living sh*t out of the Geolandar in terms of capability and durability/longevity. I’m hoping that, coming from a Mercedes AMG which I love but is not so adventure friendly, that this will get me to venture out more and go backpacking and camping and be more outdoorsy. Hey, Mathew! Thanks for watching and congrats on the new outback wilderness! This was out first Subaru also, so we're still learning as we go. Your questions is a tough one to answer because it really depends on where you plan on taking your vehicle. I don't recommend the KO2 to anyone who's not going to be putting their outback in serious situations where they will need a true off-road tire. That said, I think the nomad grappler is a great option for someone who wants the best of both worlds, but doesn't want a tire that makes driving the car to work unenjoyable. Hope that helps!

    • @roamingwithjosh
      @roamingwithjosh  Год назад +1

      From a looks perspective, you're going to want different wheels with a larger positive offset so they stick out a bit more. If you just put the lift on without new wheels or tires then your vehicle will look like it skipped leg day. Also, you want to remember that when you go up, you also want to go out a bit too. That will help keep the center of gravity balanced. Adding lift without width will make you even more top heavy which is never a good thing while off road. Hope that helps!

    Its only 2 ply right? Seems to be the same market as the Falken Wildpeak AT Trails, pretty neck and neck!

      I believe so. They are definitely on par with the Wildpeak tires.

  • @darksideemt

    Looks like a good tire. I think it's supposed to compare more to the Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail and the BFG Trail Terrain TA. Those aren't as aggressive as the WP3 or KO2. Would love to see them side by side with those I mentioned but totally agree with you and think a KO2 or WP3 is overkill for the vehicles like you mention, i.e. outback, crosstrek, rav4 and so on. Great review though Josh.

      I would say yes they are, but I’ve never ran wildpeak so I may not be the best person to ask.

      Nomads will probably get you better MPG and have less road noise, but I’ve never had a set so I can’t speak from experience.

      I never put hard miles on these tires unfortunately, but I plan to switch back to them before too long and see what they can do.

      lol I can't make that decision for you! Go with the tire that you will get the most use out of. The toyo is much closer related to the BFG ko2 so if i had to pick I would go toyo, but expect less gas mileage and a louder ride.

    Why do you not trust the Geolander off-road?

    • @RKmndo
      @RKmndo 2 года назад +1

      The stock Geolandars on my Crosstrek were basically just all-seasons. The tread was pavement-oriented, and the carcass probably was too.
      CUV AT tires, like the Falken Wildpeak AT Trail or the Nitto Nomad Grappler are engineered to be more durable off-pavement than the typical all-season. Tread elements wrap around the sidewalls a bit for more off-pavement traction and durability, especially when aired down, in ruts, and/or clawing through uneven terrain.
      I don't know that Subie-sized Nitto Nomad Grappler sidewalls will be as durable as BFG AT/MT Tri-Guard sidewalls in LT sizes. Tri-Guard BFGs tend to be pretty heavy though, compared to something like Subie-sized AT Trails or all-seasons. LT tires, in general, can have a ponderous feel on pavement, especially on a CUV that normally feels agile/sporty.
      I have AT Trails on my 2016 Crosstrek. They're fairly grippy on wet/dry pavement and OK in snow too. I went from 225/55R17s to 225/60R17s, so they're about 1" taller than stock, giving me almost a 0.5" gain in ground clearance on stock rims. My 2.slo/CVT Crosstrek can still get 40+MPG on flat interstate at sea-level/45F, with cruise set at 55MPH, and using winter-blend gas. I have an Eco-hitch and Primitive skids adding some weight, but typically no roof crossbars dragging air. I also use a high-flow DNA cotton airfilter. The AT Trails hum a bit on some highways, but the stereo or open window/sunroof can easily overcome that.
      I'm thinking of getting a set of 215/75R15 siped Geolandar MTs for strictly offroading though. The trails are mixed muddy/rocky/rooty in my area. I'll keep the AT Trails, or similar, for year-round commuting/roadtrips. I have a multi-mount winch if they get overwhelmed. I may just get an older Wrangler Unlimited for local offroading and for hauling a boat though, so CUV AT tires would be more than adequate for a winch-equipped commuter/roadtripper Crosstrek.
      Tires like the AT Trails or Nomad Grapplers are probably about right for most CUV overlander/adventure types. They're tougher than typical all-season and all-weather tires, handle winter AND summer roads with their plentiful siping and pliable/durable tread, and yet don't degrade handling/ride/MPG like a ponderous, offroad-focused, LT tire. If your trails aren't deep mud, they'll likely be more than aggressive enough, especially if you also have traction diffs, a winch, and/or similar offroad equipment.
      I've shredded sidewalls on all-season car tires, 215/75R15LT Wrangler ATs, and even 30"+ BFG Tri-Guard tires. Something like a BFG or Interco offroad LT tire is drastically tougher than a typical all-season car tire. Some offroad LT tires barely need any air to support something like a Suzuki Samurai, because the sidewalls are so beefy.

    • @roamingwithjosh
      @roamingwithjosh  2 года назад

      Bc the sidewall is barely noticeable.

    • @FracturedNinja

      Sidewalls on the Nitto are 2 ply which I think is what the geolanders are as well, but those lugs on the side may help.

    • @roamingwithjosh
      @roamingwithjosh  2 года назад

      I would say those lugs would make a big difference, but both being 2 ply makes you wonder.

    • @FracturedNinja
      @FracturedNinja 2 года назад

      @@roamingwithjosh yeah it is interesting... I am assuming that the Geolander is 2 ply I know overall it is 4 ply, but not sure what the sidewall is. I will see if I can find out and post back.

    So let me get this straight. You spent 17 minutes expressing your intent to demo the tires.... 17 minutes....

    • @roamingwithjosh
      @roamingwithjosh  2 года назад

      I spent 17 minutes giving you a comparison of those tires vs two other tires as well as giving you information about the tire and an idea of what you can expect in terms of MPG after 200 miles of having them on the vehicle. You must have missed that entire section of the video because you were thinking about what you were going to say in your patronizing comment.
