This is wonderful choreography and in my opinion way ahead of its time. The combination of classical ballet technique with modern jazz choreography is really well done. This dance is still relevant today.
He announced Susanne Charney as one of the dancers with the long dark hair. She was the lead dancer in the Rich Man's Frug in the film version of Sweet Charity!
No one ever moved like Donna McKechnie. Even without the 'name tags' you'd know that was her. Perfection as a dancer. You can see why Michael Bennett wanted to choreograph everything on her.
Interesting that Dean Jones is introducing Donna McKechnie - just a few years later they would both be in the Original Broadway Cast of Stephen Sondheim's "Company."
That was some great dancing! Very energetic and they were not just some dance moves then switch to the latest dance. I remember that one name Lada Edmond Jr. I can't remember if she was the or a principle dancer. I just remember that one name. First time I had ever heard a girl called "Jr." I found it odd. 😕
one other thing--i danced in a gene castle show. i nevre knew this wsa one of the things he did as a dancer. i feel very blessed to have experienced his choreography and to have met him. but if i'd known i would have made an idiot of myself in rehearsal when he watched and coached us. omigosh--gene castle coached me!!!!!!!
Oh, man, this is good! I'd forgotten how much I used to enjoy them on Hullabaloo. Thanks for posting this! It's good to remember some things ARE as good as you remember!
Well, thankfully, there were the two go-go cages on stage the entire time. Because, yes, this is great modern dancing - but let's not forget that the whole purpose of Hullabaloo was to show off '60s rock, and with it, the undeniable significance of go-go dancing. Thus the fame of the fringe-clad Lada in her go-go cage.
Amazing! Patrick came out to see our company of King and I when we played the Pantages. He this group of dancers set the foundation. Sadly few dancers today can't come close to that pedigree.
This was WONDERFUL!!!!! Yes, that is Donna McKechnie dancing with Michael Bennett (or before). Don't know where you got this from, but thank you for posting it. What a treat!!!!!
I recently saw Patrick on an episode of "It Takes A Thief" on Retro TV. I only heard of Hullabaloo a couple of years ago. The show featured most of the famous musical acts of the day--but these multi-talented dancers were clearly Hullabaloo's main attraction....
I remember this show when I was really really little : Shindig , Halabaloo ,the Lloyd Thaxton show , Dean Martin Show even the Danny Kaye show and the Andy Williams Show.. and of course the Ed Sullivan Show
@best12bars A young Patrick (16 or 17) dances a couple numbers in "Flower Drum Song" the movie and is very impressive. He appeared to have ballet training.
@pams29 Yes! Thank you for telling me. Her choreographer actually wrote to me earlier so I finally found out who she is. I bought the Hullabaloo dvd's a while ago because I am into the music from that era and she immediately stood out. Not only is she the best dancer she is BEAUTIFUL. Her face is so pretty and cute all at once and she looks like she is truly having the time of her life every time you see her dance. I had no idea that she became so famous. I want a time machine now. ;)
Now that's ENTERTAINMENT!!!!!!!!!! Thank you. I own the box set of Hullabaloo, but this dance part of the show is not on it.. also the box set on DVD cut out Joey Heathertons dance with the original hullabaloo dancers. So many great parts were cut also with the hit performers who were on the show.... why?
That sucks that they removed Fabulous Joey Heatherton from the box set - just my humble opinion .so sorry that happened .. I would send it back and get a refund .. not worth anything🚫🚫 without Terrific Joey Heatherton !!! ... A lot of the music performed on that series is copyrighted material ... lousy but true ... greed - motivated music omissons🤑🤑🤑☹️🤯😠😠 ... 😵 personally I wouldn't make the purchase ... It's an incomplete collection without Joey And ALL THE MUSICAL PERFORMANCES🤔 .🚧🚧🚧.. A TOTAL RIP OFF🤨😱😵😠 - SHAME ON THEM FOR RIPPING PEOPLE OFF😠😠😠 - BOO HISS 🤯😬😝😝😝😝 👎👎👎👎👎🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫
the nicest thing to consider about the hullaballoo dancers is that they weren't 'young'. for example, patrick adiarte had to have been in his mid-twenties by the time he was dancing on the show. a far cry from the 19 year olds on 'sytycd'. the biggest plus--they dance with PASSION! real passion. not 'aren't i hot?stare at me now' passion but the real deal. i could watch this clip for hours and still be inspired to do one more pas de bourree.
In much the same way that Fonzie "stole" the show on Happy Days, Lada Edmund Jr. "stole" the show on Hullabaloo (she is my hero). Nonetheless, this is one of the most amazing assemblages of dancers ever--including choreographer David Winter. Notice at 1:55 how Patrick Adiarte spins around twice in the air. Don't try that one at home kids without adult supervision!
Of the 2 main music shows of this type (Shindig and Hullabaloo), this one was more...'glitzy', whereas the terrific David Winter (R.I.P.), who was here, on RUclips (a very nice person, to boot) along with Toni 'Mickey' Basil, choreographed that show in a way more 'friendly' to the performer - and not distracting from it. As some here know, a few of these have worked long with Bob Fosse. Ms Charney (1:22) would be the lead girl dancer in the Rich Man Frug number of Sweet Charity.
phillyflash43 Adiarte was on Broadway as a child (King and I, Flower Drum Song) and had major roles in both the King and I and Flower Drum Song films. He's also in the Brady Bunch Hawaii special.
Suzanne Charney was the beautiful long hair brunette lead dancer in the movie Sweet Charity dance scenes at the nightclub in the movie. They did three dances back to back. She was awesome.
I wore my hair just like that girl at 1:24 in 1986. We know call it 80's Hair. Its funny that most of fashion and hair of the 1980's was copied from the 1960's. History repeating itself.
Anyone viewing this must have noticed that the director had some sort of bias against Ms. Charney 🤔🙁☹️😠 many of the dancers have facial close - ups while dancing ... except for Ms. Charney ... many face close ups of Mcketchney.. clearly preferencial treatment towards the male dancers, Lada,jr.and the others ... I notice a clear bias against Ms. Charney☹️😠😬😔 ... maybe because she wouldn't kiss a$$ (???)🤗🤯😆😆. 😳🤨 just my humble opinion... 🙂😎☺️✝️☯️☯️☯️🛐

It is OF it's time, not ahead of its time!

Which was choreographed by Michael Bennett on top of that!
Boy this is really great. Thanks

Not just pretty faces but real talent.

Late reply, but yes, it's Michael Bennett dancing with Donna McKechnie. No mistaking her.
wow suzanne charney was brilliant on hullabaloo too not just in sweet charity
Loved her loved her in the dances scenes from Sweet Charity movie

i love hullabuloo! i grew up on it when it aired on AMC's AM Pop! before they sold out.
AMC Totally reeks now. I don't watch that channel anymore.
This clip is stunning. Thanks for posting.
Reminds me of Jerome Robbins' NY Export: Opus Jazz which was choreographed before this in 1958!
That move at 3:02 is otherworldly terrific. Mesmerizing.
Awesome!!!

Kind of like going to a yard sale , finding old Playboy ©mags for sale - then finding out all the vintage lovely ladies have been removed 🤓😱😵... why bother to buy them at all ?!?..🤔. other than for the vintage ads...🤨😄😄😄🙄

Love it! : )
It's very simple to figure out who's who, since each dancer stands in front of, right next to, and/or pops out from behind their name!

Ms Charney (1:22) would be the lead girl dancer in the Rich Man Frug number of Sweet Charity.
The first two men were especially good. Mike Bennett is Michael Bennett I guess. Patrick Adiarte danced in Flower Drum Song on Broadway.
YOU SAID IT.
Patrick can really spin and jump.
It is with sadness that I inform you that David Winters, the choreographer of the Hullabaloo Dancers, has passed away.
RIP. He dated Linda Lovelace in the mid-70's.
@best12bars yeah sweet charity is a classic dance film...bob fosse genius rich mans frug all 3 parts amazing.
Suzanne Charney was the lead dancer in the three dance numbers in the nightclub scene in that movie she was gorgeous
Which dancer is Suzanne Charney in this clip? I recognize Donna but don't recognize Suzanne.
@@Jungfanne1 1:30 with the long hair (used so beautifully in that long ponytail in Rich Man's Frug)

That was Suzanne Charney, I believe.
What was the name of the black lady?
Barbara Alston, I believe.
Interesting that Lada is barely shown, when she was their star. The girl in the cage.
Great footage. Anybody have any idea where this is from? I don't recall seeing this on any of the three Hullabaloo DVDs I own.
The Gibin's
Didnt Glen Cambell host the show???
Better than Shindig's dancers?
Yes
@1952kid No, he did not.
So you think you can
Who is the hot chick at 2:12?
The great Donna McKechnie
The blonde's not much good. The tall skinny boy on the right, however - the first one to do a solo - was ballet-trained or I've gone blind.
Blond one is Lada St. Edmund. Normally she is the frenzied go go girl in the cage.
