Awesome! I've been homeschooling my 7 kids for 25 years! And still, I find myself over involving my kids in too many things and being nervous my kids aren't measuring up to what the world says they should be learning. Now in my final years with my last 3 kids (11th, 9th, & 8th grades) I feel this pull to slow down and focus on what's most important in schooling.... faith, critical thinking, money management, household management, good work skills, etc. Maybe they won't take precalculous, chemistry, or British Literature, but they will know how to pray, be kind, work hard, provide, think, and discern. I choose!
I find this comment coming very close to home. I only have 4 kids and have homeschooled 17 so far, but everything else that was said is me! I have had the same thoughts and desires. Three of our children have graduated and feel that I messed up how we did their high school but I didn't know how to implement what my heart wanted for them. I only have one child left. *How* do I let go of the school mentality, let go of the normal high school subjects people expect (there I go again! 😶😐) How do you make a transcript if we follow our heart and not do typical school?? And how come the kids don't think they're doing 'school' if I even deviate from the textbook\workbook approach.. And how do I structure my day if we focus on the knowing how to pray, financial learning, home\life skills, etc. I feel like I would have to make a plan, or a schedule for my child to see 'what to do next' .. and I'm not a planner. That will bring me down quicker than anything. So, I go back to the normal school at home, find a curriculum to cover a topic like personal finance, biology, literature etc. and then we're right back to the drag of getting X amount done to finish by the end of school
Amen!! The important things..I feel the same way...going to do a living off the land unit with Gather Round Jesus...& life skills is what they need to be successful!!😁🙏📖🎉
Beautifully put. I used to struggle with the fact that I couldn't financially do all of the sports, extra curricular things for my children because of making the decision with my first child to quit my job and homeschool her. God is showing very clearly to me this year that everything I have done is enough because I give my days to Him and I seek for His will to be done. Thank you so much for your words of wisdom girl. 🙏
I cried. Thank you for this video and sharing that. My heart needed it today. I’m looking at 3 autoimmune diseases and other health problems and I’m only 29 years old. We are starting our 5th year homeschooling and I’m so scared to fail these kids. One of the things in my vision was to remember that I’m enough because God put me where I am today and called me to this. I came from neglect growing up, aged out of foster care, God saved me, changed everything in my life, and gave me a family. So why would He not help me through this when He helped me through my past and has blessed me with 5 beautiful children to be thankful for. ❤️
What a beautiful testimony! Not only did God keep you and save you, but how much more will He do that for your children! He loves you AND your children and He will take care of them wherever they go.
Is this odd: I’m a single, childless 25 year old and I’m thinking of using these principles for when I start nursing school in the fall 😂 the advice is universally applicable ☺️
I am a mother of four, and a grandmother of nine. I wish I had had a fraction of your wisdom as a young woman. This, and your recent program about instilling life skills into your children, are stand-outs. You are a born teacher and nurturer, and we are all the richer for that!
I totally needed to hear that mantra. I GET TO CHOOSE. I've been getting a lot of snide comments about starting our first grade year in May. Ultimately, I don't care, but it's gets tiring hearing how I'm not letting my kids have a fun summer because they have to do school. (which is only about 1.5 hours a day).
School in the summer is a lifesaver for us. It’s too hot here. Also, you can have fun with summer activities and do school. They’re not mutually exclusive. I find people don’t think win-win. We do swim lessons and go to the gym every morning and have plenty of time to play outside too even getting our school done.
Doing school work over the summer has saved my butt for 3 years now. It's way too hot to be outside in the afternoons anyways, and too humid in the mornings most days also! A friend of mine put it this way, if you start right, you have 365 days to get 180 days of school in. Makes it much easier!
We started our school year in January when we took our kids out of the nursery. We are doing school in the morning. Afternoons and evenings are for play, swimming, running, bike ride walks etc. I love this summer routine. We have a day where we don't do school which is Friday and yesterday evening my daughter said: " I miss school, I love to read those little phrases". I think school is part of our daily life and it looks like they start to enjoying learning !
So great to hear younger homeschool moms so committed to teaching their kids! I have been homeschooled, have been homeschooling for 23 years(14 more years to go!)and I appreciate hearing this! LORD bless us all as we work to help our kids learn, grow, thrive, be whom God wants them to be!♥️😊
That is so nice to read once here in Brazil it is something so new and that people have been taking as political agenda. Leftists against, conservatives are pro but none of them got to know the families and how it works. 23 years homeschooling, wow, it is amazing.
I am on venturing into my twelfth year of homeschooling. my journey has been a roller coaster and that is okay. I am proud of my children. I am happy that I made the decision years ago to take my son out of public school when I did. His first year he literally transformed into a totally different child when it came it learning. He was so smart. Yet, he was bored in public school, and he was bullied for the last three years while in public school. I am so proud of the young man he has become. He is such a self-learner still to do this day. Always challenging himself to do more. To be better than he was the day before. He is 32 years old now and married. An amazing provider. I am just blessed. I homeschool my daughter now and she is starting her sixth-grade year. Actually, we started on August 1st. She is very strong willed and honestly, I don't think she would have learned in public school because she is so hands on and such a self-learner. All children do not learn in the same way. Public education does not have the time to hone into each child's learning style. I am just thankful we live in the United States of America, where we can choose the way, we want to educate our children. Thank you for your video and I just ordered the book you read every year. I can't wait to read it.
I have listened to that book 14 times in 7 years. It’s SO good for my heart. I love that mantra, too. I am going to implement that as well. Thank you and God bless you and your kiddos this school year!
It’s the best! I borrowed it from library. Read it. Turned around and re read it then ordered my own copy from Amazon and read it again before the school year was up. Even sent pictures of some of the nuggets to my sister who doesn’t even homeschool!!
Yes! I choose to do what I think is best for me and my child. I choose not to go the easy route and stick with the status quo just because it's the way it's always been done. I choose to believe that I am my child's best teacher!
Years ago when I began my teaching prep classes, I was given a small plaque. The plaque that I still have, was treasured throughout my 27 years of teaching primary grades. It applies to all teachers, classroom or homeschool. "A teacher has a special way of making learning fun. Finding joy in every day and the best in everyone!"
I so wish that all new homeschooling mamas would heed this advice! It's not about all the "shiny" things OUTSIDE of the home that will make for a successful homeschool. It's the LOVE, the TIME, the MEMORIES that you make as a family that will ensure success in the future for your children.
I needed to hear that we have a choice 😭 I'm researching homeschooling my two neurospicy boys, and I also have ADHD. I am binging your homeschooling videos. Thank you for putting the time into these 🩵
Thank you Angela! I needed to hear your important message to us homeschooling parents. It felt like you were directly talking to me. I decided to homeschool my girls. Every single time school gets brought you. Not just homeschooling any educational topic. Many of my extended family members tell me how my daughters need to be in public school and how they are not socialized enough. It's difficult to socialize with one car and my husband works twelve hours shifts. Thank you for giving the confidence to say thank you but no I made my decision and I have this under control!
Hi Angela. I’m Tiana and I’m a stay at home mom of 5 and wife. I homeschool as well. First and for most I want to say that your content is absolutely amazing and inspiring. Secondly, this specific video right here has poured into me all that was intended. I’m literally about to watch it for a second time and I have my notepad and pen ready to take notes. I have homeschooled since January of this year and I had a lot of doubts and discouraging moments a long the way. I wanted to quit but I just couldn’t because homeschooling my children and being led by God while doing so is truly my hearts desire and I know this is where he has me right now. This video spoke to my spirit and put me at so much peace with the course God has over my family’s lives. My greatest take away from this video is how you go back to your family’s vision and your homeschool vision. I text my husband while he was at work and asked him if we could do this. We plan to write it out, frame it and post it in our home. Thank you so much for this. It has fueled this fire within me! THANK YOU, love you and I am excited to enjoy your content with my family and looking forward to the next video. 🤎🤎🤎🤎
I thank you for your experience and knowledge! I am so tired of people making me feel like I have e to be in everything. I am glad to be reminded I have the choices and not to over load myself or the children bc I advice other gives and think we should do!
Thank you! This was a fantastic video to find after spending the evening watching hauls, supplies and adding even more 'stuff' to our homeschool. Stuff we just don't need and will prevent us from achieving a more relaxed and less intensive year ahead. An incredible three recommendations, again, thank you.
I needed that mantra more than you will ever know.. I am going into my first year of homeschooling with my kindergartener and I am constantly going back and forth about if I am making the right decision. I think of all the things he will be missing out on in school that I loved as a child. Some days I feel like I am holding him back. But I have to remind myself that I have a choice. Thank you for that. :)
My daughter went to public school for kindergarten last year, and im homeschooling her for 1st grade. I bet yours isn't missing out on as much as you think :)
You got this momma!!!! We all have those doubts and anxieties for the first year or two before we get into the rhythm of things. Give yourself grace every single day and you will get through it. We often don't see the accumulation of what our children are learning until the beginning of the next year and we look back at how far they have come. Best wishes to you! ❤️
There's so much that you are giving to your child by having him home with you also. There are so many options for extras in your homeschooling also, so if you feel like you are missing something, do some searching to see if it's available!
Each video I relate more and more 😭 we started homeschooling in the middle of the school year , last year. This is our first year starting at the Beginning of a year and I'm so excited but truly feel like it's the actual beginning of our adventure. "I get to choose" Literally making that into a sign on our wall 😂 i think my son and I both need to hear this daily . Also totally relatable about listening to audio books while also having free hands to continue the never ending tasks projects and ideas. Lol would love to hear more about your add journey while also homeschooling! The thoughts never stop and it's so hard to stay mentally organized while not getting overwhelmed, even when I write it down 😮💨
I am loving the course. Most thing I love was you constantly reminding new homeschool to be real and give space to myself. I also really wish you could do a video on screen times. How to handle that. Its so hard to give tablet to kid and expect them to just watch specific things
I've read teaching from rest at least a dozen times. If a homeschool mom wants a quick piece of advice I saw read this! It's grounding and foundational!! Love that you love it too.
My family is really big on quality meals. It’s how we stay connected and nourished. So I plan our homeschool around meals. I try and always make sure there’s a hot breakfast and we sit together and laugh and talk, before beginning the school day. Lunch is usually quick and we end school in time for dinner prep. Although this can be very tiring at times. It keeps everyone from being hangry. I also have a rotating chore chart so that I am not alone in cleaning up after meals. Love your videos! You have such a lovely family
" I get to choose" , yes Angie such a beautiful choice, is to choose🙏🎁, in all situations pertaining to life, I say this to myself in all things, "I get to choose"
Ah I wish I would of found you months ago!!! We are starting on Monday first time homeschooling. It’s something I have been wanting to do and my husband got on board. I pray that I’m in the mind set and I’m not overloading my daughter. I don’t think I am but like I told her, hey this is new for me and dad we’re all learning how we go. This is what I want done in the day let’s see how long it’s going to take. My husband and I grew up in public school. So this summer we really went through a unschooling and think we will be for the first few months. We are all excited and super nervous (me). My husband jokes on the days he is teaching he is just going to fly by the seat of his pants and plans are out the window. Lol
I love your mantra.I've been educating my children for 24 years. Why I never thought to do this is beyond me. I have two graduates, and a 15,14,and nine year old still learning at home. You just confirmed what I've been thinking about lately. We are never so much a. veteran of homeschooling that we can't learn from someone else. Thank you Angela for the lesson. I love your channnel. You're never embarrassed to be real.💖☕
Yes! I re-read Teaching From Rest every year, go over our mission statement, and read over specific notes I made myself. It always focuses me on what's most important. Will be starting my 13th year.
Loved that you shared your mantra, even when not planned! I really needed that! Also, I just added Teaching from Rest on Audible. This is our 3rd homeschooling year and I am definitely the person who is always disappointed when things don’t go as planned. My husband always tells me, “Under promise and over deliver!” It pretty much applies to almost everything in life! 😅
This was pure GOODNESS 🌸 Thank you beautiful. I have been homeschooling for over 10 years and this is just what I needed to hear as I plan, prep and pray myself into our new year. 💗💗🌸🌸
I thought this was going to be things like clean out old supplies etc. But I was so wrong… this is so much better. This will be my 6th year homeschooling and I agree with all of this!!!! Great reminders too for those of us doing it for a while. I think remembering our why and centering on what’s important to our family is so important. Thanks for sharing!!!
I have an only child due to secondary infertility. We do all the things and activities. She gets to pick, then we reassess after the year is over to see what worked and didn’t. But, if I had more than two or three, I’d definitely would take a slower approach.
I’ll have to replay this video daily !!!! I need to repeat it to myself- I GET to choose! Thanks for sharing ‘Teaching from rest’ is one of my favorite books. I also like rereading ‘minimalist homeschool by Zara fagen’ values-based approach. Being intentional with your time and focus. Just a great read. Thanks again for sharing this video.
I needed to hear this so much. Thank you for sharing the heart of your homeschooling with us. All too often as homeschoolers we get stuck in this place where we compare EVERYTHING and I have found that it never leads anywhere good. Yet, I find myself back in that spot over and over again. I will be reminding myself of your words in the next weeks and months as we begin our school year at home.
I like hearing the mantra with the video examples. I would probably watch it often if you made a short video with just the mantra. I remember you coming the homeschool convention in Wichita, KS. This inspired me to pull out our vision draft from years ago!
I read that book every year also!! Going on my 3rd year, and can't find it 🤷♀️ I must've let someone borrow it! Best homeschool book I have ever read!!
I am inspired by your hearts mantra for your choice to homeschool. I’m going to write something up for myself to keep my vision and mindset throughout the year. Thank you for sharing!
Your videos and information is so great. You motivate me to keep going on this RUclips homeschool sharing journey. I am only starting my third year homeschooling so a lot of your videos keep me going. Thanks!!!
Gosh Angie...what a wonderful, beautiful way to stay focused on what is so important. Thanks for this peek into the heart of your family. 🥰 so wish you were around when I was homeschooling.
Oh Angie, I LOVE this video, thank you so much!!! You have such amazing insight and you are so articulate!! Thank you for your hard work and have a lovely weekend!! :)
Thank you, Angie, for your encouragement. I’m a homeschool veteran. My husband & I were both homeschooled & knew from the get go that we wanted to homeschool our children. This school year will be my 13th year, I believe, teaching & I still fight anxiety about how we do things. I want to read your book suggestion. It sounds like something I need.
Angie, THANK YOU!! I needed to hear this. I'm getting ready to start my third year of homeschooling this year. I've had a lot of ups and downs because of my health problems but I'm excited for a new year and a fresh start! Love your mantra!! I for sure need one of those. 🥰
I REALLY needed to hear that mantra! Started to get in my feels. Thank you so much for not only giving me motivation to create one of my own, but for sharing yours! Wow
I loved your affirmations. thankyou. wrote it down to add some to my part of morning affirmation.Could you also share how do you work with screen usage in your home.
This is true! Thanks for the encouragement and the reminder that we get to choose! I’ve been eyeing “Teaching from Rest” and just purchased to read. Have a feeling this will be a regular read each school year.
Love this! I'm starting to feel anxious about planning this next school year, and this video helped me feel a lot of peace about it. We get to choose. ❤️

Your "I get to choose" mantra made me cry like a baby! 😂

Not even a homeschooler but I do work in education and I’m a mom. “I get to choose” is a beautiful mantra for all moms! Love it!

And also, I'd remind yourself that not everything that you got to do is still available these days. 🤷🏼♀️
Thank yall so much for the kind words and encouragement. I need all the support I can get! :)
Each video I relate more and more 😭 we started homeschooling in the middle of the school year , last year. This is our first year starting at the Beginning of a year and I'm so excited but truly feel like it's the actual beginning of our adventure.
"I get to choose"
Literally making that into a sign on our wall 😂 i think my son and I both need to hear this daily .
This video was so helpful! Can you do more homeschool prep videos?
Well that mantra brought tears to my eyes! Definitely needed that especially right now. Thank you so much!
This was literally the best homeschool video I have ever watched! And I've watched a lot of them. Your advice really resonates with me. Thank you!
The beautiful thing of getting to choose. Yes!! 👏❤️
I listen to teaching from rest every year as well. I think it's so helpful to start with the right (for me) mindset!
I have an only child due to secondary infertility. We do all the things and activities. She gets to pick, then we reassess after the year is over to see what worked and didn’t. But, if I had more than two or three, I’d definitely would take a slower approach.
Also adding pray over the upcoming year and the progress of your school.
I’ll have to replay this video daily !!!! I need to repeat it to myself- I GET to choose! Thanks for sharing
‘Teaching from rest’ is one of my favorite books. I also like rereading ‘minimalist homeschool by Zara fagen’ values-based approach. Being intentional with your time and focus. Just a great read.
Thanks again for sharing this video.
mantra is awesome! would love to read the same to myself!
You have that audiobook/podcast voice. I could listen to it 🙂. Thank you for sharing your mantra ❤
Thanks!!!
I re-read "Teaching from Rest" every year, too!

Your “I get to choose” mantra is gonna be my vision next year. I may even cricut a sign to hang where I do school! Need to write it out ☺️

You need to type on the description box all the words you said to yourself as mantra. Because omg ! Amazing! I want to write them down
I love the idea of the words of encouragement for yourself, thank you for sharing that has really inspired me!
Angie, THANK YOU!! I needed to hear this. I'm getting ready to start my third year of homeschooling this year. I've had a lot of ups and downs because of my health problems but I'm excited for a new year and a fresh start! Love your mantra!! I for sure need one of those. 🥰
