    As a former home ec teacher, I completely agree with you. I bet, in the next few years we will see home and and shop classes back in public school. It was such a mistake to remove these valuable subjects!

    Perfect timing again as usual. I've been struggling this year with figuring out how to make school fun for all of us as well as not get overwhelmed. I have 5 kids, 4 being schooled to some degree and a little boy who makes things "interesting". Thank you for these great ideas. I'm definitely going to use a bunch of them. ❤️

    I really like the practical ideas of just soaking up those moments in the kitchen, taking breaks from normal school schedule and having a fun/game day, or field trips, or diving deeper into their personal interests, or life skills as things to teach, and not feel guilty about it.
    I imagine myself doing those things, but when it comes down to actually doing it, I just don't know how. It's my goal this year to learn how to be that type of homeschool mom.

    Ideas for high schoolers.... We like to watch the movie version of a book after it's read, especially for high schoolers.... Pride and Prejudice, Black Beauty, Call of the Wild, To Kill a Mockinbird, etc. Also for high schoolers, they pick "electives" and determine the direction of different subjects based on what they want to do after graduation. For example, my 11th grader wants to be a dog trainer and board horses, so we have been doing more animal sciences instead of chemistry and physics. Business math since she wants to own her own business. Keeps their interest when they are passionate about it and can see how it can be applied to their life. Lastly for high schoolers, team them up with others in their field of interest, job shadowing and volunteer work are 2 ideas. Again, my animal loving 11th grader volunteers at a horse rescue and works for a dog breeder. My 9th grader loves crafting and started doing craft shows in 6th grade. She's learning not just how to improve her crafting, but supply and demand, how business works, and math skills. Definitely hands on and thinking outside the box is key.

    You are so right about games! As a former public school music teacher, we played games in my classroom almost every time and it reinforced songs but the kids didn't realize it. They just knew they were having so much fun getting a turn to chase someone, or tag someone while they sang the song. It was a win, win.

    I discovered the most amazing homeschool hack! I have a smart tv, and iPad and the app procreate …. So basically i have a projector and white board , I’ve never had the room for a white board , projector screen or the fancy posters now i can make them and pop them up on the tv , same with slides and even do a morning time review and circle time i even make my own bible verse slides and pop them up on the tv and i can even do a bulletin board and have show in the morning before we start . It’s made home school more fun for my daughter and me and i feel like starting the year off as strong as i am is the best I hope other homeschool moms a great year!

    We love doing seasonal themed activities vs parties. A little extra work on my end but they end up excited about the same subjects we’ve been working on because of a theme or if it is framed differently.

    • @ari3lz3pp
      @ari3lz3pp 2 года назад +1

      I'd love to try both! But I put a lot on my plate. LOL We aim for seasonal but most times my kid doesn't care. I love planning my year around the seasons though. I get where you're coming from. I think it's great because they will tie more into the day-to-day in the community as well, and it helps their memory work better as it's all linked up!
      For this fall (4th/Sp.Ed.) the general themes are scary things, real v imaginary, and also a little "this is how it's ok" thrown in to help after the scary but that's more Bible study. We are learning a ton about Westward Expansion and so in fall it's about some of the spooky things that happened during the parts we are learning about in mining, old settler ghost stories and real challenges, our fun movie is Zorro which I will be fast forwarding the (more adult and too gory scenes...need to rewatch first), talking about the HX of the story of Zorro and the man who inspired it..and the social psychology of defining a hero/anti-hero.....so ELA as well. All comes into play! ✨ Lesson planning is a lot of work but so much fun.

I’ve done a multiplication pumpkin puzzle for Halloween. We’ll do a themed craft. Maybe play a themed game. It just breaks up what we’re already doing. If I’m being honest we do a lot of party celebrating too but it keeps the school part of our day more grounded.

    About being hands on - our library system has kits you can borrow. Most of them are geared towards early elementary but they're curated with related stories, toys, games, activities. We got out a telling time kit that had all sorts of manipulatives I just wouldn't have bought on my own. We also got out 2 of the magnet kits when we were exploring magnetism. Definitely check into it!

    We’ve been using educational documentaries once a week as a science lesson because I’ve got two under 2 right now and things are chaotic! They kids really seem to like nature boom time, Sam’s zookeeper, and the themed disney documentaries (oceans, monkeys, butterflies, etc). We just started this year so it was easier for us to ease into adding science/art as a family, and letting them pick a related project to do after it’s over. They watched Inside the Mind of Cats on Netflix and went and made cat toys for our cat after, then wouldn’t stop talking about cat facts all day. Educational opportunities are everywhere!

      It's science!! There are lots of documentaries and movies about religion. Teaching children about religion is wonderful but pretending it's a part of science or that evolution isn't clearly proven is just plain wrong.

    My husband and I were JUST talking about how much more important "home ec." skills are and actual dietary and cooking skills compared to the "just cooking Ramen" . 🍜
    ✨I love the idea of parties to celebrate something that we've learned! Lol The TV on the cart for sure at public.
    So many educational resources out there on the internet, and yes just in the world almost anything can be a learning opportunity if you're curious and have those resources. Angela mentions the playground and I thought of geometry angles, physics, chemistry in the materials used, social psychology......so even for older kids there's lessons there. Just have to keep an open mind 🙃
    We still use a Charter and haven't taken the total leap to homeschool but I'm inspired to do it!
    I worry most about social opportunities but we already don't have those now because this school only has very massive gatherings that are too much for my ASD kid, and for me too tbh.
    Great video! I can't wait to try these ideas! 🙏

    • @dirtroaddee3192
      @dirtroaddee3192 2 года назад +2

      Don't worry one bit about the social opportunities, they are out there for the taking. 4-H programs are very homeschool friendly and typically small in size (and they have so many programs that have nothing to do with agriculture), homeschool co-ops, sports, public library programs, church youth groups, etc. You got this! 💗

    • @threearrows2248
      @threearrows2248 2 года назад +1

      I can assure you that almost every homeschool family will tell you that their children are quite comfortable in and equipped to handle social situations, friends and in groups. Sticking kids in a big class with the same, same-aged people every single week day with one adult teacher attempting to interact with all of them at once will NOT foster healthy social skills - it will enforce stereotypes, encourage the worst common behavior and limit the age groups the child is able to interact with. Homeschooled kids are generally able to better interact with all ages, including adults. Something to think about.

    Thanks for the ideas, Angie! We love genius games board games that I got on amazon: Periodic sparked my child's love for chemistry for example, we have Cytosis, Subatomic etc. I got almost all of them and love them, there's a learning curve to figure out the rules and setup, but it's really worth it in my opinion!

    Also to make lessons more fun adding in things like criss cross, wordsearches, spot the difference (for younger kids) and other puzzles can make it fun & interesting while still being educational. Even for older kids. E.g. if you are learning about say the First World War a crossword or a word search with words relating to the war can educate them but also it’s fun just looking for the words. Or how about a quiz? Pop quizzes can be fun and make kids think. Especially if there is a small prize at the end if they did well. I love going to quiz night on holiday or doing quizzes online live or tick box ones. Plus with a pop quiz you can see where the kids have been paying attention & where there need to go back over things.

    Also with the getting creative there are loads of kits on line that are creative that can teach from STEM kits to fun science kits (like ones that make slime or ones that you make a miniature human skeleton or ones that each coding. Companies lie, learning resources, discovery, kidzlabs, science museum and many more make fun kits for kids that are educational. Many kits you can find in toy shops or down the toy isle in grocery stores like target & Walmart or in uk the big supermarkets like tesco & asda. A fin kit once in a while definitely makes learning fun. Also toys like Knex Educational STEM teaches kids about forces and motion while they build a fun model and then watch it move. Hat kid wouldn’t love a lesson where they build a knex model?

    Be careful with curiosity stream. We were loving it, but my daughter found a documentary on cleopatra and there was a very R rated romantic scene that she was absolutely not ready for in 4th grade. Very disappointed with that streaming service. Love the game schooling advice though!

    How long do you typically homeschool, for each grade level? I just started homeschooling my jk child, and we only do about 1 hour a day.

      15-20 minutes for age 4-5
      30 min for age 6
      60 min for age 7
      2-3 hours age 8-12
      Four hours for high school
      That's my experience and pretty Charlotte Mason lined as a forever homeschool mom of 7

    Hi Angie- Loved this video and the ideas!
    As an aside: Can you remind us again the differences between your two channels? I can’t remember which I watch more -
    I do love homeschool type and house update videos :)
