Autumn in the cottage garden 🌷 Spring bulb tips & more

- Spring gardens are planted in Autumn.
While it can be sad to see the Autumn flowers turn to seed, planting Spring bulbs is one of my favourite Autumn garden jobs. Spring flowers brighten up dark days and provide food for pollinators at a time of year when there is not much for them.
My favourite Spring bulbs, which bulbs flower in Spring?
Here is a list of my favourite Spring bulbs; each bulb will come in different varieties. For example, you can get double-headed tulips resembling peonies or tulips with frilly petals.
Snowdrops
Crocus
Anenome
Camassia
Ranunculus
Hyacinth
Daffodils
Tulip
Alliums
Iris
Muscari
Crocus and Snowdrops are usually the first Spring bulbs to flower, and they can flower from January onwards.
The great thing is that most of your Spring bulbs will come back each year and are hardy.
Tulips flower well in their first 1-2 years, but some varieties may perform less well as they age, so you may need to replace them.
You can put old tulip bulbs in a grass meadow.
What month should I plant spring bulbs in my garden?
September, October and November are perfect months to plant your Spring bulbs. I have noticed that our Autumns have been warmer, so you may even be able to plant into early December.
Most Spring bulbs need the cold to grow, especially tulips, so it is best to plant them before December for flowering the following Spring.
How do I plant a bulb, and what if I put the bulbs upside down?
When planting spring bulbs, try to remember, pointy side up and if in doubt, lay the bulb on its side.
Some bulbs, like Alliums, might not have an obvious point, and you can lay these on their side.
Why didn't my bulbs grow?
Bulbs are frost-hardy, so don't worry about a cold Winter killing them. The main reason bulbs don't flower or don't do well is too much rain.
Mix some grit to your potting compost to give it more drainage, ensure the pot has enough drainage holes, and shelter them over Winter from too much rain.

You sure do a lot of work to prepare for the TV appearances, Catherine. The cut pot with the different bulbs and labels, etc., was a cool teaching tool. Loved your dress for the show…very pretty on you.

I’m so glad they aren’t already neutered. Where I live kittens are done before they leave the shelter no matter the age :( they are so small, it’s very sad.

Those kittens are so cute, the white one looking out through the window looked so like Blondie I felt a tear. And I’m a dog person😂but I love the cats too.I’m feeling a bit burned out with my garden at the moment and I was relieved to see yours needs tidying too I want to leave it for wild life to hide in over winter but my veg beds need a tidy as the beans are starting to die back and I have to collect my seeds for next year and the sweet peas too. So thanks for giving me a jolt and some inspiration especially with bulbs.❤️

Such sweet kitties Catherine. I used to have two kitties from time they were adopted as kittens to the end of their lives. So full of energy and love. Now I’ve been a dog momma for the past 15 yrs. Walking the dog is much needed exercise for me.
It’s still hot in Northern California but will start next week to cool down.

Ferns and hostas are lush and green for shady places in the garden. I do love lots of green foliage. My favorite sort of video kittens and gardening. Bliss. 🍁🍂🍁🕸🍂🍁

You can put a green manure in, which you just dig in spring time to put some nutrients back into the soil

For shady plants I like acanthus mollis, and fatsia japonica. Both flower in the spring and are evergreen 🙂🍀

The kittehs are soooo cute. This week l made 2 planters out of old tires. My favorite shade plants are hostas, l think they are indestructible.
Variegated Solomon seal would be cute in your shady corner. Brunnera, Ajuga, and Polmunaria are my favorites for shade. Kales and winter lettuces and spinach would do great for winter greens.

You looked so lovely for the TV show, I'm going to check out that channel. Do you eat the passion from your vine, it's so delicious.? Your crocus should come up through the taller grassy area, and grow longer reaching for the sun. Have you seen the channel monalogue, she's growing a bunch of different bulbs in the lawn. Another channel you would enjoy is Jes, she has a ginormous shade garden. Give those sweeties a hug for me.

My younger cousin just got a pure white kitten as well. She named him Pickles.....though I call him Pickle Puff. My cat Mystery or Mae Mae is what I call her, is not impressed by Pickles ;). She's 15 and very used to being an only child lol. She is a tuxedo cat that is double-coated and still as soft as a kitten would be.
