February 15 2024 Maryland USA; To say I enjoy your video’s is an understatment. This one in particular gives a sense of transquility that is so needed. There is a neighbor with sunflowers and amazing no matter what the weather brings they stand so tall! Loving to take time and watch and take note of your garden that inspires me. You are such a lovely lady.
Beautiful garden - hope you can take time to sit with a cup of tea in your Adirondack chair (I live in New York State and have camped and hiked I those beautiful mountains) and enjoy what you’ve created. I’ve had 2 astilbes - one dark red, one a lovely peachy color - for many years that flower very little, while my neighbor’s in similar conditions of sun and soil are glorious every year. Your viewers’ comments are leading me to believe that the neighbor’s automatic watering system is making the difference. I am not dependable enough, clearly! My zinnias in every color and shape think I’m a perfectly adequate gardener and reward me profusely.
What a lovely vlog and so informative about your plants. I’m also in Ireland and the old rain has played havoc with my plants. All I want is a bit of colour around me. I’m 77 now and it gets harder every year but like you I use loads of pots and can move the best ones nearer to where I can see them.🎉🎉
Hi Catherine, I just love your videos, I’ve been a gardener (for a living) all my life - now 61! And although you’re often learning when you’re sharing your gardening journey I get so much pleasure from your enthusiasm and can feel the joy your garden brings you, you remind me of my younger self. I also sew, do diy etc so enjoy all the videos you put out. 💕 As for the astilbes they will live in the shade but struggle to flower without a few hours sun each day, even partial/dappled sun will do. Much love from Scotland.
A tip from a greenhouse worker is to put the plants where you want them and leave them in their pots and live with them for awhile and see how they do and if you like them where you’ve placed them. I always think I need to get them planted right away. I never considered waiting before 😊 As always just love your videos ❤
I love that you are so kind and respectful!! It should be the way life is and I love the beauty of your garden!! Can't wait to see what you do with the gutters!!
Your Garden looks Blooming Lovely now! , more so considering we have been having some warm weather. I wouldn’t say you were a amateur gardener anymore either. 👍❤️
I look forward to your videos every Sunday and Thursday. You’re like a breath of fresh air to us tired folk. Maybe because you’re over in Ireland and I am wishing I were there 😉… no but really, I love your garden , greenhouse and the whole shebang even down to the hedgehog door 😂. Keep doing what you do. 👍🏽❤
Never liked astilbes much until I had success with one. It grew to be a huge plant, prolific with blooms. I’min the U.S. in the S.E. corner of Wisconsin, zone 5b. Here’s what I learned and what worked for me: my Astilbe needed more sun, didn’t like deep shade. My plant got about 4-5 hours of dappled sunlight. Not direct, hot sun. It also benefitted greatly from mulching with compost. I also use worm castings as a soil amending agent whenever I initially plant. My Astilbe also likes drainage so planting in clay was a problem. Keep amending the soil with manure (bagged/well rotted), compost, or perlite for better drainage. And they like slightly acidic soil…..threw a handful of organic sulfur at it and scratched it in around the roots. Also, watered it regularly so the efforts I went to in the soil actually benefitted/reached the plant. Once established, watering and an occasional feeding with an organic, slow release fertilizer right along with the rest of the garden was all it needed. Hopefully you’ll have the success I had and enjoy your Astilbe. 👍
I was just coming to type basically the same thing, except my astilbe get 4 around 3-4 hours of morning light. So not a great deep shade plant. And yes they like it moist and are heaven feeders. I believe they are in the rose family and it seems like everything in that group LOVES fertilizer.
Hi Catherine. I'm loving the cut flower garden! Cosmos, Dahlias and Zinnias all great flowers😍 noticed the fully planted and growing pallet collar box too. Looks great. Great idea to reuse those rain gutters
Hello! I just wanted to say that, this year, I actually sowed my zinnias in a deep pot then transplanted them into the garden. They have been magnificent all Summer and are still going strong. I love your videos ❤
Beautiful garden and lovely video you deserve positive comments, your always a joy to watch i can't wait for your next posting and looking forward to your living wall it's bound to be amazing with your green fingers
TFS. I enjoy your cottage and garden. I never had trouble growing Astilbe in MI. I had woods on the back of my yard and a 100 plus foot shade garden with bulbs. I had a lot of clay in that soil which I believe they like. Also grew well in the shaded part of my pond. I had beautiful pink Lily of the valley flourishing near the water amongst my pink Astilbe. I lost a lot of plants but did not give up although hubby was not always happy to see me replace perennials. But like you I needed earth in my fingers to be stress release from many hours as a night ICU nurse. God bless. Cannot wait to see you upcycle those gutters! What a grand idea.
I tucked my astilbe on the north side of the house and it bloomed the most of any I have ever grown: not much sun, a lot of water running off the roof, and suddenly I had a beautiful plant.
The view of the lighted greenhouse in the beginning is so beautiful! I took a screenshot so I can look at it over and over. You are so creative. I love your videos and look forward to them every week. 💖
I love your beautiful hydrangea. I also have a red hydrangea along with a blue one. I also have a climbing hydrangea and a variegated leaf with denim and lace flowers😊my favorite. I live in the USA , north Georgia. Last winter was extremely cold and sadly not a single bloom on any hydrangea this year. My Cannas, however have had the very best year ever❣️👏 I have a purple rambling rose and a soft pink rose that was my mom’s running on a trellis that was breathtaking earlier this year. Thank you for sharing your creative videos and your gardening experiences and snippets of your life in Dublin with us🥰🤗
Oh, the gutters from the house will make a great place to plant stuff. I love all the flowers in the yard. So relaxing to just watch and I bet even more sitting in the yard.
Thank you Catherine, as usual you have shared a lovely, relaxing, and informative video. I also grow Astilbe. We live in the southern part of New Brunswick, Canada. I have found, through trial and error, that our Astilbe grows the best with morning sun and afternoon shade. We have it growing in several places, under a tree, and in a bed with Hosta and Heuchera. We have built up the soil so that it is loamy and covered in dark mulch. This summer has been rainier than usual and the Astilbe have loved it and have full blooms. I hope that this helps. Laurie
Good morning from California. You are so genuine and kind that it makes it easy to compliment you in the same way. I am so inspired to do renovations of my own. I am currently scouring for items. I “will” be successful at it. Props to you my dear for being you and inspiring the rest of us. ❤
It's holiday today in our country so no work today and happy to see your video pop first. I love cutting flowers from my garden and makes my room colourful.

What a relaxing and beautiful video to start my week. I loved it. I also appreciate what you said about he comment section and community here. I very rarely comment on other channels because it can be brutal but everyone here seems so nice and legit helpful.
I planted my astilbe under the canopy of a large tree.. limbed up the tree and brought in more dappled shade, mostly morning sun, so not too hot, they flowered, beautifully.. good luck ❤️❤️
🎉 South Africa is also going into spring 🌼🌱 makes me so excited for all the work I put in during the winter. Love your channel because of the warm feeling I get while watching.😊
Such a lovely channel you have (this is the first episode I've seen). We have a half dozen different varieties of astilbe in our pacific northwest garden and most are in partly shaded areas of the garden. The ones in the sunnier end of "partly shaded" are shaded by other shrubs during the sunniest, warmest part of the day. Even if the outermost most leaves get a tad crispy by the end of the summer, the plants return every year and reliably produce flowers. Similar to your experience, none of the astilbe planted in full sun have survived (I practice "survival of the fittest" gardening--if a plant survives and fits, it stays).
Green house looks so pretty all lit up. Now you have the garden looking tidy. Not to much damage. Love the deep red hydrangea and also the white ones beautiful with all your rain. Thanks for the up date. See you next week.
Hi Catherine, my astilbe do best when I remember to give them enough water. I have filtered sun, now that I thinned the tree canopy. They need some sun to flower well. Good luck!!
Astilbes like moist semi shade. Mine only get morning sun for about 2 hrs. They are difficult perenials. Also cut back any old dead foliage qnd the flowers, make sure the top of the base stem is covered in leaf mold or mulch in winter to protect them before they start sprouting. Add a small amount of plant food every 3 months during spring and summer...then they're bound to flower. Jo😊
Yes seed your zinnias in little pots then transplant into the ground. They like full sun Hot weather. If you want big ones get the California giants. Mine were amazing this year. But I live in Florida. But so worth the try !
Hello from Alsace, East of France, I'm sure you get nice and kind comments because you are nice, knd and respectful yourself. Here after a heatwave, Autumn has arrived . From 35 degrees Celsius to 18 in a matter of days and rain, wonderful rain. have a successful week, looking forward to seeing rhe bees.
The garden where I used to work had some amazing, very established, astilbes and the garden was south facing - the only shade being provided was dappled due to surrounding trees I’ve had a bit of reno work done and had plans just like yours to use bits of the old guttering! (must be something in the water🤣)
What gorgeous garden scenes at the start! I've been watching for a couple of months now and you have inspired me to start gardening again, tomorrow it will be spring here in Australia 🌸so it's perfect timing 🌻
I never had any luck with Astilbes, and I have tried to put them on different places in and out of the sun. But I love them so much, so I keep on trying too 🥰
If you like Hostas and can buy them in Ireland, they LOVE the shade and are super EASY to grow and care for and come in TONS of varieties. I have deer that live around my house in the woods so I can only grow them in my back garden which is fenced in but they r really lovely perennials. Thnx for your CONSISTENTLY WONDERFUL videos! I wait each week for them to be posted. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm in northern California, we have a Mediterranean climate... For me astilbe is definitely a shade plant, 4 hours or less sun & only morning sun or dappled shade is what works best in my climate. I grow my astilbe in with ferns & heurchera. In my experience astilbe need a fair amount of moisture in the soil, not wet but consistently moist.
Astilbes... I'm in South West England so similar to you. I have dryish soil, but if I water mine in may/june, they flower well in the shade. Love what you're doing in the garden!
When I put canes in as support, particularly if they are a bit shorter, ie eye level to me, then I put empty yoghurt shot pots (Actimel ) I have a bag of them in the garage and pop one onto the top part of the canes, just to protect us if we should come into face contact with them.
Hi Catherine it’s great when you find treasure, fab idea to grow strawberries. Your garden look’s beautiful and good luck with the new bargain plant’s. Have a lovely week 😊
Oh wow, that hydrangea! ❤ I can’t grow them successfully (yet!) so that’s amazing to see. Love the strawberry wall, I’m wanting to be doing that too 🍓🍓🍓
Astilbe like moist shade. From my experience, they will tolerate some sun but have to stay well watered. The area you have picked out should work well. I’ve had some in pots hiding in the shade waiting to be planted for way too long!! I haven’t killed them yet😂
Oh my goodness Catherine, your garden is looking great!! Yes, as Monty Don says mulching is really good for the garden. And I see you have your lovely apron that you made on. And as usual I love watching your videos, there’s always something new to learn…thank you for this 😊❤.
You captured magical views Catherine. 💚 your garden. Plant strawberries and flowers together. 🍓's shut down for winter. ❄ Pansy, violas, ornamentar cabbage, lettuce, and cyclamen can give you color till 🍓 come back. I'll be adding lettuce also as foliar interest and eating. Kale, beets and Swiss chard.
It could be earwigs eating your plants, clear all the debris from around the plants as they live and hide in it. I have tons of earwigs and try to clear the debris up every couple of wks and its really made a big difference. 🥰👍
Hello Catherine always love watching your videos I too always read the comments for helpful information and tips your right we can all learn from each other My niece just bees too for the first time❤
I always look forward to your videos. I’m so inspired to work in the garden or give a piece of furniture a refresh. Unfortunately, my garden has suffered from 40+ days of over 100 degrees (F) in Austin, Texas. I’m living vicariously through you, Catherine 😅💐🌷
That deep colored huge hydrangea is the most beautiful plant I’ve seen! I have never seen one so dark. ❤️❤️❤️
It’s stunning isn’t it 😍😍
In SA i have never seen that color. Just pink and blue❤
I love it too - variety name ? ❤

Catherine, your flower garden blows my mind! It is amazing…it seemed to happen so quickly. 🌺🌸🌼
The whole time I was waiting for you to cut the bud wire instead of the string! 😮
We planted gutters once and they dried out quickly because they were shallow. You’ll have to keep track of the watering. 🍓🍓🍓
What a wonderful video! I love the strawberry wall idea!!!

I have good luck with awhile. It likes morning sun and afternoon shade. It also is a borderline bog plant so close to a easy pond is ideal.
I tucked my astilbe on the north side of the house and it bloomed the most of any I have ever grown: not much sun, a lot of water running off the roof, and suddenly I had a beautiful plant.

My astilbes grow in full sun, right on the coast on the wild Atlantic Way, in really wet soil, and they are thriving !

My astilbe is in partial shade, protected by a ninebark. They get very thirsty though. Your potted red hydrangea is an absolute beauty!
I think mine might be too thirsty where it is, maybe it is too dry x

Astilbe like moist shade. From my experience, they will tolerate some sun but have to stay well watered. The area you have picked out should work well. I’ve had some in pots hiding in the shade waiting to be planted for way too long!! I haven’t killed them yet😂
Oh my goodness Catherine, your garden is looking great!! Yes, as Monty Don says mulching is really good for the garden. And I see you have your lovely apron that you made on. And as usual I love watching your videos, there’s always something new to learn…thank you for this 😊❤.
Aww you’re so kind ♥️ thanks for that x
You captured magical views Catherine. 💚 your garden. Plant strawberries and flowers together. 🍓's shut down for winter. ❄ Pansy, violas, ornamentar cabbage, lettuce, and cyclamen can give you color till 🍓 come back. I'll be adding lettuce also as foliar interest and eating. Kale, beets and Swiss chard.
You are a darlin 💞🙏🏻💞
It could be earwigs eating your plants, clear all the debris from around the plants as they live and hide in it. I have tons of earwigs and try to clear the debris up every couple of wks and its really made a big difference. 🥰👍
You have inspired me to concentrate on my garden more, so thank you. Love from Adelaide, South Australia
Aw I’m so glad to hear that ♥️ enjoy some quality time in the garden xx
Hello Catherine always love watching your videos I too always read the comments for helpful information and tips your right we can all learn from each other My niece just bees too for the first time❤
I always look forward to your videos. I’m so inspired to work in the garden or give a piece of furniture a refresh. Unfortunately, my garden has suffered from 40+ days of over 100 degrees (F) in Austin, Texas. I’m living vicariously through you, Catherine 😅💐🌷
Great video, watching you & Karen has inspired me so much, this is the first year I have enjoyed gardening & that’s partly due to you 2 ladies ❤
Aw I am so happy to hear that x
