I saw a fellow on youtube do a potato growing testdrive and he tried many different containers, as well as in the ground, all at the same time. His best yield, by far, was cardboard box wrapped in burlap on the outside to hold it together.....it was shallower than the bags or buckets, and that seemed to help with more yield....wide and shallower vs. tall and deep. The potatoes clearly had much more room to develop out from the main stem, while closer to the surface, vs. out and down from the main stem, because the bags aren't as wide, making the plant grow the potatoes further down in the soil. He got more than 20 good sized potatoes from one plant. It was shocking as he dumped it out and all the potatoes appeared!

I have a question please. Do you know the medium of the soil he used?
Did he try laying them on flat ground and covering with straw? I keep hearing about this way of growing and I’m so curious if it works well.
I live in western Canada and I’ve grown potatoes in hay for the last two years. It’s a succcessful way to grow them and they are very clean to harvest if you do it when it’s dry.

Yeah i am hella old and have done the artists way over and over, it changes every time. She is 75 and published the book in 1992. Great BOOK!
POTATOES:
Cut the whole bottom out of the bag, but set it on a BBQ rack, can get at the 2nd hand store cheap. so you can lift later. Take a half of bag of the soil out to hill them up as the grow up. White potatoes grow up the stock..... by burying it more, as they grow, as you go. Sweet potatoes grow down so use full bag of soil to start and they will produce going down. Way too wet for good production, but try removing the whole bottom and setting on the ground will draw extra moisture away. Need full sun all day if can. try to dry off a bit, as they get ready to harvest, like beets and carrots, it makes them sweeter.
Then leave them out on a table in the green house, if it is hot/dry, so they can develop a thick skin for storage. If you can rub the skin off with your thumb... not ready for storage. (jus so you know, when you bring in the big harvests.)

Your soft potatoes look like the seed potatoes. I believe you planted Maris Piper potato’s which are a main crop, the ones you harvested looked like MP, they did not look like early potatoes. If planted in buckets make sure good drainage one seed Potato per 10 litres of compost, should yield approx 1.5 lb per seed potato. Start your bucket potato’s in you greenhouse Feb/March placing buckets outside after danger of frosts.

I just harvested my first successful (3rd try) potato growing. I did the buckets/bins method, but make sure to drill holes on the bottom and set the bins on a couple of 2x4s for really good drainage. The 2x4s under the buckets are what finally gave me a good harvest.

I did the artist way last year! I have a couple of videos on my RUclips channel where I show the journal I made while doing the course. I absolutely loved it and gained so much wisdom about myself... BUT didn't realize it while I was in the middle of it all. I am going to do her walking book course next!

Hello Catherine, for us the veg garden didn't do well at all this year. To much high heat then to to much rain! No one in my area did well with gardens. The flowering plants suffered also. Oh well there is always next year. I always enjoy your channal.

When you clean the bird bath, if you add several copper coins to the bottom, it will keep the bath pristine. Always love the evolution of your little garden...just needs the sound of water, it's so relaxing to hear. Birds are also attracted to gentle moving water.

I never would have thought of transplanting sunflowers until I saw you do it successfully. Now I have self sow sunflowers where I want them.
Hello from hot and humid northwest Florida USA. I planted in ground in early March, about 35' row of three different varieties of potatoes. I harvested in May and June. I harvested about half the row for myself and then my grown grandchildren as well as my son and some friends came and harvested the rest. They also harvested corn and okra. I planted five varieties of okra this year and they are still making. I did some garden tours over the summertime. I am learning about how different it is here at my new property than it was at my old property. I planted runner beans under my corn which has worked out good for me in previous gardens in other locations but here a wind storm hit in mid June and layed over my corn. I still had a good crop of corn but my beans are now a big tangled mess growing on corn that is laying on the ground! Lesson learned!

Catherine if you get some of the floristry green sticks you can break off your alium flower heads and poke the green sticks up into the flower heads, works for mine. !

I always look forward to watching all your videos. Have you thought about getting a solar fountain for your pond to help aerate it? When I had my garden pond at my previous home, I had a small waterfall and pump that did the trick as I had an electric outlet nearby. Solar would probably work best for you.

I grow my potatoes in food safe buckets and get great potatoes. I use bone meal when planting and add dirt as the green parts grow up. I will be harvesting my potatoes soon.
I have to try growing potatoes. This lady loves some spuds! Your garden is beautiful even when in transition. Most gardeners have green thumbs, but you have a green body! Enjoy your art class.

Yes, the wild look is nice, but can get chaotic if not tamed occasionally. I do love hardy geraniums and your pond area looks nice❤

I tried my hand at growing potatoes in 5 gallon buckets. Following my experienced daughter, I used standard potting soil and made sure the buckets were up on boards so they could drain.
Love watching your videos. Definitely inspired me to get my plants sorted. The garden is good for the soul. Love the hair cut too.

If you do a bucket put some gravel in the bottom to help keep the holes from getting plugged with soil.

Great you’re growing some of your own food..such a good idea in this economy with expensive grocery prices and uncertain supply of food.. we’re a family of six with no garden space, just a small patio and I’m trying to figure out what and how to grow for my family. At the moment I just have a few herbs in a pot and a zucchini (courgette..Brit in the US) plant with no sign of zucchini’s!. Would love a video on how to start up a little mini homesteading spot on a patio to be little more self sufficient but unfortunately no chance of chickens allowed where we live! Have you ever considered an allotment? There might be something local and there not too expensive to rent for the year, ( well, they aren't where I am )
We joined a community garden when we lived inan apartment. It was only $75 for a whole year for a large plot. And people always share what they grow.
I just cut my herbs for the 2nd time yesterday. I froze the chives after chopping them up. I learned that by having them dry on a plate they got really pale looking. I have sage, apple mint, & thyme drying on plates in the dining room. I just put the 1 cutting of these in glass jars. Lorraine

Good day Katherine. Yes, I've done the Artist's Way a few times in the last decade or two. It's very therapeutic. You can be as deep and introspective as you like. I find it helpful especially when I haven't been kind to myself or feel lost creatively.

One of those barrels would be ideal to grow your potatoes in.
Alliums are pretty easy to grow from seed. The big ones like globemaster might take a couple seasons to size up really well & make the big flowers though but since they are pretty cold hardy that would work if you plan on letting them be a summer perrenial in the same area(s) year after year.

Catherine, I grew Maris Bard potato’s in tubs this year. I had about 5 tubs and yielded 20 pounds of lovely tasty potatoes. Give it a try.

I do my potatoes in the black plastic containers that you get at the garden centres. I'm in Quebec and my potatoes didn't flower either. I harvested them about 2 weeks ago bc the foliage was dead. I did 4 containers and the harvest was minimal😞The potatoes are definitely better tasting than those at the shops though☺️
Curious why are you lifting? I grew lots of potatoes but always in well draining containers set on wheels and in plenty of sun. I never grew anything in bags. Did it for fun mostly. But mostly grew corn zucchini many types of tomatoes peppers beans snap peas all in containers. Always added most of the soil into the woodland garden I had behind my home and added compost and fresh soil each years. My little pond had a small fountain so it aerated. Every year I released lady bugs. They kept pests at bay in a big way.
Hi Catherine, my teasel looks like yours. I googled it and it said it won't flower the first year, so obviously a biennial. Oh well, we'll see it in all it's glory next year. It's feeling very autumnal out there x

I’ve had a disappointing harvest from my bag potatoes so far, it the self-seeded potatoes in a raised bed which I contralto pinched off the flowers were huge and bountiful.

My attempt to grow potatoes in bags was dismal this year I still have 2 bags to check on which will probably be tomorrow but I’m not holding out any hope of having a good harvest like yourself I haven’t got enough to last the winter

Tomatoes are also categorized as determinate or non-d. Again you can get a list under the headings of which “brand” of seed you buy. I put in brand for the potatoes seeds name.

I used to work for a man who used a large plastic trash bin to plant potatoes. he did not move it though.
