How is reving the engine up to 4000 rpm going to blow a head gasket when the redline appears to be 6700 rpm? That means that it is safe to rev the engine up to 6700 rpm with or without it being under load.

Most car owners think the battery powers the car and an alternator is a turbo 🤦‍♂️. They have no clue cars can have many problems it ain’t always the battery or a headgasket.

I remember a TSB on a diesel that could have improperly installed freeze plug in an inaccessible spot. It called for the engine to be cold started, once oil pressure is up, floor it to the rev limiter. Then if it didn’t blow the freeze plug it’s fine. If it did blow, replace it.

Excellent conversation and demonstration of the capabilities of a modern day motor (or is that engine?, whatever), you can rev to the rpm limit which varies by engine. Check the engine specifications to know what your specific engine does. Not you Kenny ,but the viewers. The 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8 V6 engine produces 197 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 230 pounds of torque at 4000 rpm. Kenny, is only reving to 4000 rpm, well below it's threshold. You can't hurt the engine unless it gets overheated, already has mechanical problems or exceed 10 to 20 minutes of continuous reving. On a dynamometer, you will exceed these rpms in order to get the results. Great video with very valuable explanation! Keep Wrenching!!!

  • @ryans413
    @ryans413 3 месяца назад

That why there’s a rev limiter in park. You notice it’s not revving past 4000 that’s keeping the engine in a safe place not to be damaged. You actually risk hurting the engine more while it’s in gear than in park. Some people have such a heavy foot while driving they will hammer on the gas hard then when the engine breaks they complain the cars garbage.

Arm chair warriors would have an absolute heart attack before electronic fuel injection. The “rev limiter” back then was the valve springs, 6 - 7 grand you got into valve float and that’s all you got. Auto Service teacher held 1 of the shop cars at WOT for about a minute, exhaust pipes after the manifolds started glowing red hot.

Incidentally with a 4 cylinder VW engine it is kind of common to have cracks form between cylinders in the head, especially if it had overheated, and you slapped in water before allowing the engine to cool down completely. You find it when cleaning the head prior to machining, and do a crack test on the unit. Easiest fix is a new head, or else you end up stitching it, which may work.

Kenny, revving this lady's grocery getter engine under no load proves nothing. Put head sealer and AT205 in the oil and call it a day. YOU HAVE BETTER CHECK THE OIL FILTER ASSEMBLY AND INTERCOOLER (just done one last week). Also some hack/con could of put oil in the overflow! Therefore put things in perspective here, change the fluids add the chemicals and move on. YOU BETTER NOT RIP HER OFF ON A REBUILD! Those head gaskets seldom blow, especially little old ladies driving them. I know your main stable is American junk but European are different. Keep the updates coming...

1 of my brothers , had bought his wife a brand new Toyota Camry with the V6, back when. He always took it to the dealer for service or repairs. So he takes it in 1 time for a leaky water pump, and light overheat under 100k mileage. They changed the W.P., he got it back, still running hot. Next trip to Toyota dealer, they sold him a $600 radiator + labor. returns car, SAME hot issue, but it had gotten worse than before after they had changed the pump.
He calls me about this problem, I told him they probably didn't burp the system good enough the 1st time, and it had air bubbles trapped.....Toyota dealer again, NOW they try to sell him a head gasket job ($2,000)....In the end I go to his house, check it out, and run it to burp out the massive amount of air bubbles trapped in the cooling system, took maybe an hour+ just to be sure I got em all out.
Well, the overheating issue is NOW fixed, by my work (all I got was free dinner hahaha).....He went back griping to the head general manager, how they screwed the pooch. he got refunded the cost of the radiator only, and a "sorry" Car was fine ever since, until his wife wanted the Toyota Sequoia SUV....Traded in the Camry, I told him "Yepp how ya like your "dealer" now bro??

Agree with free reving does not harm engine.
Changing all filters and oil in car keeps the car healthy and owner wealthy.
Having said that, I would change transmission oil n filter at 100,000 miles.
I remember driving on a motorway in Spain once.
    Very steep decline.
4 lanes. I passed 3 other cars all with their brakes applied trying to slow their cars.
I in a manual shift put car into 3rd gear and let the engine rev itself at 3500 RPM.
Wheels turning the engine into a compressor. I did not need to apply brakes, and was in full control of the car.
As my driving instructor told me 50 odd years ago, you go down a hill in the same gear you would use if you were going up the same hill.
Manual g boxes are great for giving you engine braking.

    Leak Down Testing.
Use your preferred method of clocking each piston's TDC, I learned to love an old school combination vacuum/pressure gauge, like for carb'd fuel pumps connected through an air hold.
As a piston moves up (with closed valves, compression stroke) low pressure will build, dissipate. Hand crank until vacuum shows, rock back & forth pressurevacuum like it's a dial indicator over zero.
To minimize hand cranking, test in the firing order, you're done after two full crank rotations.

Grab some latex/nitrile gloves to use as balloons, balloons could be good too.
Remove the intake duct from the throttle body. Tape a glove/balloon, as air tight as you can, over the throttle body.
Tape a glove over each tailpipe.
Tape a glove to a crankcase breather, get creative.
Remove the cooling system pressure cap, tape a glove.
Have a stethoscope handy, or just a length of hose for listening inside cylinders adjacent to the one under test.

Why go through all this? To get advance information regarding an engine's upper end internal condition prior to removing its head. If you should happen to find crankcase leakage along with head leakage, isn't time to estimate a complete engine rather than pulling a head?
In the Passat's case, you expect leak down test pressure to show in the cooling system (I don't), if it does show there, you know where to scrutinize closely for cracks.
Should you hear cross talk between cylinders, assume a warped head (and possibly cracked head and/or block) until you can confirm or reject that assumption with a straight edge.

    Signed,
    CLT D'Vivre

Engine rev range is there to use. Yes high revs in drive with brakes on will heat up the trans fluid fast, but most modern ones will very rapidly tell you trans overheat, and limit engine RPM. Driving in my car there are times it will be sitting close to the limiter for a few seconds, then I will change gear, because torque peak is high up, and power peak is somewhere around there, so use them when you need to. Long term not great to run there, most engines are designed to run around half the rev range, but are fine with the occasional spirited drive cycle, here called a free State tune up, because it causes peak pressures in the cylinders, and does a bit of work to clear out carbon build up inside, and on the exhaust side. GDI it does nothing for the inlet side, that you still have to clean.

I’m a retired engine design engineer & program supervisor. The principal danger to components in an engine that is revved with no load is to the connector rod assembly, specifically the connecting rod bolts.
Think about the loads imposed on a rod bolt (or stud). You have rotational forces trying to stretch the bolt and decrease the clamping load on the joint. Free revving the engine means the engine is making zero bhp - the engine is producing only enough power to overcome friction. When you load the engine, combustion pressure is pushing on the piston crown and opposing the stretching forces on the rod bolts caused by rotational forces.
4,000 rpm won’t be a problem, but I wouldn’t want to be around an engine being free revved to, say, 7 grand.
I recall as a kid going to grudge night at the Atco NJ drag strip. The hot cars were virtually all manual transmission vehicles. There were plenty of blown engines, and they almost always happened at the shift. High revs, and suddenly the engine is unloaded as the clutch is thrown in to make a shift - and boom.
