      I personally think the hooter suits her better but this is pretty good too

      The hooter was more unique to me. It sounded more muscular and no- nonsense like an articulated married to a tug boat. It was on par with the Reading and Northern whistle that sounded like a Squatch screaming in the forest

      This whistle (southern longbell 3 chime) suits this locomotive MUCH more. To me the hooter sounds wimpy and i dont really like hooters, and for a locomotive of this size the long bell just fits it so much better

      The 1309 is a powerhouse, considering that it is a 2-6-6-6. Though it is not an "Allegany" like the locomotive that is on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit.

      @@danielfoster3642 I believe the 1309 is a 2-6-6-2 “H6” mallet, the 2-6-6-6 is the “H8” otherwise known as Alleghenies or Blue Ridges depending on which railroad

    I didn't even know they'd done this until I read about in Railfan magazine last week. Such a great job with putting the temporary C&O marking back on 1309. I saw her in the B&O museum's parking lot in the 90s, never thinking she'd run again

    That's what I like to see and hear. A steam loco gettin' down and dirty. Working hard. The scene with the farmer made me think of something O Winston Link would have photographed. Oh yeah, and that long bell three chime whistle, perfection!

    Always loves the look of the front of C and O steam locomotives. They just look powerful. Its hard to explain. And i never noticed until now why it was a slower locomotive until now. Its. Compound articulated.

    I like it better this way.
    I get that the Western Maryland scenic railroad would want this in Western Maryland colors, but im glad they throw the C&O roots a bone every now and then

    That echo from 8:00 to 9:00 is insane. It sounds very haunting, like a ghost train has come back from the dead (scrapyard) to haunt the rails again. Imagine hearing it at night.

    The last Baldwin steam locomotive is back. Chesapeake and Ohio #1309 pulling a coal drag in it's original colors. Unfortunately that was temporary, it's back in its WMSR colors it had since 2021.

    That's my whistle I sold to them. It is a Southern long bell three- chime last used on Southern's Asheville Division and likely cast at the foundry at Asheville NC. I think it's one of the prettiest sounding whistles you'll ever hear.

      The crews at WMSR must keep busy swapping C&O with WM and back on the tender. When I rode it last summer, it had Western Maryland on the tender.

    Doesn’t this C&O H6 (H 1-5 too) have a very unique trailing truck where the truck frame is almost stationary while the wheels move side to side while negotiating curves on an axle within an axle? Must be an interesting story behind that development.

      It is privately owned, and at some point was damaged while off WMSR property. It may return one day once it’s been repaired.

    That whistle kind of sounds like a low pitched version of 611's whistle. That's interesting considering 1309's normal whistle is kind of like the one on 1218.

      As I have recently learned, it is a Southern long bell 3 chime. Does sound a lot like a Hancock, I agree. Like Frisco 1522.

      They put a NYC 6 chime on her in Fall 2022 also. It was really unusual since you almost always imagine hearing it from a fast-moving passenger train, not a big Mallet. It sounded surprisingly well on 1309 though.

      The locals expressed complaints about the volume of the hooter, so it’s off for now. Long bell whistle sounds amazing, can’t complain!

      Although the 1309 is classified as a 2-6-6-6 locomotive, she is not an "Allegany" locomotive like the 1601 that is on display at the Henry Ford.

      Built for the C&O, lived with the B&O, and now works for the WM… she’ll have worked for the WM longer than she worked for the C&O before her next major overhaul! Engines traditionally wear the colors of the railroad they work for, and if you really want to see a H6 in C&O; 1308 is still around.

      It's only temporary. She was painted this way for these charters only. When they are over, 1309 will be painted back into the WM fireball scheme.

    WAy cool!
    1309 gets shrouded in steam to the point that I think visibility from the cab could be difficult at times. Neat.
    But I think the whistle is using the most steam!
    What a wonderful lingering echo coming off those hills... Good show, thanks much.

    Why does 1309 have to pull freight 1309 doesn’t pull freight where’s its passenger coaches like the dining car and concession car in the video

      It was built as a drag freight engine. It can pull alot more then what you see.

    I was on a Lerro charter on the East Broad Top last October and I will NEVER do another one . Pete is a poor tour operator with little organizing skills. They were cutting tall brush DURING the charter on my dime . This type work needed to be complete way BEFORE the charter !! The night shoot was a total joke and chaos was the major theme. This line , though short , has MANY varied photo sites , yet we spent hours on the big fill at Runk Road. At a fee of $ 850 .00 , I expected MUCH more . NEVER AGAIN Pete .

      Cold days always show leaks far worse than they seem on warm days. The cold also usually causes a few leaks… it was freezing most of the time on this charter.
