- Riverdogs gathered for 4 days at Serenity West recording studio in Hollywood, CA. in September of 2016 to lay down most/all of Vivian Campbell's guitar parts for the "California" record. I was lucky enough to hit record on this pass of Viv's solo on "Heart of a Mindless Bird". Nick Brophy; producer, engineer and bass player at the console with Rob Lamothe sitting calmly taking it all in and rocking out.

Killer solo. I love Vivian's exhibition of musical maturity. His playing is golden butter.

The most underrated guitarist from the 80s
Back in the day he wasn't all that under rated we all knew how good he was and he was a guitar hero during those Dio years. Him, Randy, EVH, Jake E. Lee, Dimartini those guys were considered the guitar heroes of the day. Once he left Dio and then went to Whitesnake I remember it being very exciting but then after that he kinda went low profile till he joined up with Def Leppard. But in the 80's he was a big deal to us guitar fans.

@@butter5144 I don't get it either. The man was on every 80s guitar magazine cover. If anything, a little overrated. There are internet scrubs that put him to shame, badly, these days. I like his playing in the 80s, but its 2023..the bar was raised a good 30 years ago and continues to be raised.

I saw Vivian twice in the 80's with Dio and on his first tour with Def Leppard in the 90's. Vivian can jam the hell out of the guitar

Vivian, you are one of the most intelligent guitar players in all Rock 'n' Roll history only second to Brian May, who is probably one level less heavy than you, but his harmonic genius is unparalleled. Still, your musical thinking is awesome. Bless you!
It's annoying for that engineer or possibly producer to be on his effing phone in the midst of a talent like that. Disrespectful fool!

hasn't brought any of that ability to Def Leppard for the past 30 years
He's basically hired to be a live rhythm guitarist at least nowadays. But, at the beginning (early 1990s) of his DL career he was given a solo spot in the shows. I saw them in Atlanta in 1992 or 1993.
He has the ability, however, he is not able to showcase it in Def Leppard. They feature Phil Collen in the soloist role and unfortunately, Viv has to take a back seat. I believe that's why he does the Riverdogs and Last In Line, so he can do his own thing and rock out.
