I started watching your videos knowing absolutely nothing, A few guitar lessons and listening to classic rock in the 60"s. I'm 73 and I get many hours of pleasure putting your lessons to good use. Thank you Patrick !
BRILLIANT!!! Thank you. As a musician with a stack of experience I found this really helpful in making a very fast demo on a new song today. You LEGEND!!!
It's also worth mentioning that you can adjust the drummer track further to 'follow' a pattern in another track, for example a rhythm guitar or a bass line.
@@kylebisaccio737 It's in the drum track Editor under the percussion and tom-tom/cymbal control. it says 'follow track' and then you will get a drop-down and you can pick the track it follows. let me know if you have any further problems, but hope this helps :)
Thanks man! Just got a new iMac, your breakdown was exactly what I needed to get going w/Garageband's Drummer capabilities. I have been using Logic 9 for the last 10 years and was pleasantly surprised when I dug into Garageband' s Drummer on my new 2019 iMac.
Hey Patrick (or anyone else), is there anyway to automate these parts so you can have a specific fill in a specific place for example? So you could essentially tailor the whole part to fit the instrumental aspects of your track?
When creating a drum track for piano solo should the drum track be created first then the piano track? Do you have a video of this example? Thanks for this.
yes, drum traCK SHOULD BE DONE FIRST. I'd say its necessary just about 100% of the time as it keeps the feel and timbre of the track more in line with the vision you have for it as a whole composition in your head.
Hi I would like to see you address the follow feature on garage band drum app..I’ve been messing around with it but not really getting anywhere..can u copy a drum pattern say from a recorded song, the whole thing by dropping the song track in..I’ve tried it but no go..a.m. I missing something..or if I play the guitar part straight through it still doesn’t capture what I need..your advice would be so appreciated..thanks for your great videos!
@@TheGaragebandGuide I actually might have figured it out. If you press and hold with two fingers on a drum you can change the volume by sliding your fingers up or down.
How do I get drums to pause for about 2 seconds? I cut the region but it’s giving me a fill. I want to remove the fill and want it to end w a snare and maybe a kick.
Love your channel Patrick! I’d love to see more IOS tutorials as well if you could squeeze some in. The basics of IOS are obvious... could you show us some not so obvious tricks, such as using FX! Think you for all you do for us, it’s smashing!!’
You can use the Groove track to have a Drummer track follow the timing of another track in your project. You might be better off playing/recording along to a drummer track or metronome to begin with though.
I used the follow track function, but my drums still sound like they are off time and not playing to my other instrument track (a synth part). Is there some other step I'm not doing?
so glad i found your channel, i would also like to mention that if you hit on the follow button, it will allow you to choose another instrument such as a bass or another drum etc to follow while recording!. enjoying your vids and scottish accent!
Thanks for this. I’m still having trouble-I want a track that starts simple and ebbs and flows with the song but when I try to create different regions with different percussion selected, it automatically adds them to the rest of the track. Is there a way to stop that or is the workaround to just have as many drum tracks as unique regions? O.o
Hey 2 years later I have a question since the guy was too busy to help you by answering your question. Did you ever find out what was going on and how to correct it? Thx!
Hello! Very useful video. Thanks. Got one question. suppose you already have a drum machine part. can Drummer transpose it/copy it with the playing of one of the virtual drummers?
Hey Ya Patrick I was hoping I get get your help on a Garageband drum problem that infuriates me and I I do not know how to solve it. I usually start off by loosely making an arrangement track and then "add a drummer" and go from there. My problem is when the drummer starts the verse/chorus off with a fill and THEN 2 beats later the drums kick in, which means that when you want the drums to kick in (ex at the beginning of a verse) they don't, there is a fill for a few bars. I hope you know what I mean. This is sooooo frustrating. This will happen when you decide to maybe add 4 more bars to a verse so you drag the verse to make it longer ands then the chorus, instead of starting when its should, puts in a 2 bar fill. It screws everything up. Damn, HELP!!!!!! For Patrick or anyone else who could shed a light on this I would be forever grateful.
Hi thanks for this video tutorial on drummer in GB. You forgot to tell about the 'Follow' check box. How does it work actually? You select another (instrumental) track to follow and then what? When that track is not exactly on the beat, does the GB-drummer follow the tempo changes? In composing is it wise to first spread out a straight to the beat drum track and than add bass and the other stuff? Where is that follow check box intended for, to facilitate acceleration, deceleration patterns? Thanks in advance.
click at the end of the drum region and you'll see an icon with a line/and arrow looking thing on the middle os it, drag it out to desired length and voila! ppl don't realize it in the beginning phases of using Gband/Logic drummer but you can work and manipulate the editor to play whatever beat you want so long as you are keen on editing, cutting and have a strong intuitive approach to composition
Great guide, but you skipped over the part where you go from the drumkit default screen to the one where you're editing effects. Leaves the viewers wondering how to get to this and how to get out of this. A little frustrating
what is absolutely idiotically dumb with garageband drummer is that you can't make your own drum rhythm. I make metal music and have tried to make a spesific double bass rhythm with spesific cymbals for ages, but apparently apple just couldn't manage to actually let the user choose between preset drum rhyhtms, or letting the user actually make their own GOOD drum rhythms and fills...
Not what it's intended for really. If you want to make your own drum patterns using GarageBand's drum sounds, load up a software instrument track, select a kit and use a controller (or your Mac's keyboard) to create and record.
Hi. I am trying to manipulate a beat so I can use the hihat at some interval points. but I cant seem to shorten it without an automatic fill being placed at the end of the beat so it mixes well with the main beat. It adds that little ending itself no matter what I try.. dragging it shorter. Cutting it shorter, still adds that ending.... EDIT.. found it from your other video. grsat stuff... just dial the selected regions FILL dial to how much fill you want or to zero for no fill :)
I know that some may not agree with what I'm about to say but if you want someone to come up with a drum track then surely you should speak to a drummer? It's taken me 20+ years to learn what I know on Bass Guitar. This doesn't make me an expert on drums/percussion. Why would you want to treat a musician like this? Next is obviously a guitarist without any wood or strings or a pianist with no fingers touching any keys. Is this why music is so devoid of emotion these days?
A lot of popular music today are just drum loops made on software. I’m a drummer, my sister is a guitarist and my other sister is a pianist. We had to find a female bassist and it was not easy. We are all best on what we play the most. I agree with you but if you want to do something simple with drums or a drum loops for rap then do that. If you want a more complicated/extraordinary drum pattern then get a real drummer.

thank you for tutorial, can we play guitar and add the drum track made together?
Two questions tho. How do you edit so they do a double kick? Also, how do you change the BPM of the drum tracks?
So can you play it this way and record your guitar bass and keyboard 🎹?? Just adding in audio tracks
Are the individual drum volume controls available in the ios version as well?
Unfortunately not, no.

Need to know how to splice .. like get rid of 1st cymbal crash
How do you bring the drum editing window on the same track back after you exit it out of the drumming editing window on the bottom ?
Great start but how do you add a drummer to an existing track and get it at the same tempo. I thought it was intuitive but doesn't seem so.
It is, the tempo of the drummer matches the tempo of your project
This is good stuff! Essential information for musicians using garageband! Thank you!
well done. very helpful. great if you're getting started, but even if your advance; he's so thorough, maybe you'll re-learn something you forgot.
Really simple when you'r shown how. Many thanks Patrick

Are there dotted rhythms in the loops;I need a 12/8 rhythm and can't find anything?
how can I record the drum track while having it record my nob twisting and effects switching and modulating???
Why not touch on the "follow" along feature?
Hi!
Can I use this in a “drum replacer” context?
Where do I get this extra content?
How do you change the drum to halftime on specific measure of the track?
