As a guitar player, what is the best way to record it and utilize the onboard amp & effect options? Obviously I can't plug my guitar into my macbook pro (unless there is a 1/4 inch jack to a USB adapter?), so I'm assuming you mic it on a clean amp channel? I have electrics and acoustics. For amps I have a Randal JC-40 and for acoustic, a Fishman Loudbox Mini (which has a midi and a separate mic channel for live playing and singing) . Thanks!
Hey Demray! Great question. The easiest way to record a clean take of your electric guitar would actually be to use an audio interface (if you don't have one I always recommend the Focusrite scarlet solo $100) and plug the guitar in DI to the interface then you have a completely dry signal coming into GB which you can then use the amp sim+pedal board as needed. The other option (which can work just as well) would be what you mentioned, recording electric or acoustic on a very clean, dry setting and then using the processing onboard GB. You can also record with tones/effects that you really like and just bake them into the recording and then GB amp/pedals for lighter effects/tone adjustments as well. Hope that helps Demray! -Dean
Thanks. really great simple well paced education. I started with Ableton in 2007 and only used that for years. Getting back to recording again and got a new Mac so I finally want to learn/ use Garage band. as I am interested in how their pre sets and sample instruments sound. Years ago pro tools and Ableton had the best guitar amp pedals, but now many kinds of software exist and in a way it is more complicated. I want to spend more time playing and singing and less . Wearing the the computer audio engineer. hat deters from organic creation. I am hoping GB gives me the simplicity I need. I just need to figure out all the icons and tips. Thank you. subscribed
Thank you Dean..I just wanted to have some clafification on something you said regarding how effects work in conjunction with using the metrome..You mentioned that some of the digital instruments that Garageband offers are time-based which I totally understand. You also said however that effects may be as well...I just wanted to be certain that singer/songwriters like myself who often record our tracks as one performance and sometimes change dynamics and timing during such a performance can still use effects such as reverb or dynamics without having to worry about adversly affecting such effects when varying our timing during a performance. I believe the answer is a strong yes but just was hoping you could clarify that. Thanks again Dean!
Awesome RUclips video and explained well. What about the people that just can't afford the latest and greatest computers and software.. I have a very well kept 17" MacBook pro 2007 Runs older 32 bit format and older version of GBand, 3.0... but it works !! Trying to get back into it with what I got.without spending a bundle to upgrade. Do you have a tutorial for older versions of GBand ?? You guys are great, thanks for what you share.
Hey Carol! I don't have a video on the older version of GarageBand but I will say that most of the features within GarageBand have remained the same, the biggest changes come in an updated look or in added (extra) sounds. The trick for you might be finding the features/tools shared in this video in your version of GB. They should all (or nearly all) be there, they just might have a different look or live in a different part of the screen. -Dean
Hi Dean, hope you are doing well. I have been seeing your videos and would like to ask you, maybe nonsense question, how can I record vocals with an audio track on Garageband and at the same time I need to ear my voice while recording. I am using an external interface for the microphone and using the headphones to listen to what I am recording, but I can't listen to the audio track... If you can give me a hint on this one a would really appreciate!!!
Hey Ricardo! Not a silly question, and important one! If I am understanding you correctly (without seeing your set up) it sounds like you simply need to turn the monitor button on (which is a small button on your track header that looks like a dot with two arc'ed lines below it that turns orange when on). If that is on and you still can't hear then you might need to go to the GarageBand drop down menu and click on "Preferences", then click on "Audio/MIDI" and make sure that you have set the OUTPUT to the place where you want to hear it coming from (either from internal audio, where you headphones are plugged into your computer, or your interface, where you would plug your headphones into your interface). Hope that answers your questions Ricardo and if not reach back out! -Dean
@@ricMom Hey Ricardo, the only thing I can think of would be to select the track you want to record your voice on and hit "B" on your typing keyboard to bring up the mix window and where under Recording Settings click on Input and make sure that the input in GarageBand is the same input you are plugged into in GarageBand (example, if you are plugged into slot 1 of your interface then you should be on input 1 in GarageBand). Beyond that, if none of that works then you may need to go to the manufacturers website for your interface and see if they offer a downloadable driver to help your interface sync with recording programs. Hope that helps Ricardo! -Dean
@@thesongwritingstudio5783 Hi, once again, Dean. I connected everything as you explained and even saw one of your previous videos, that had the same exact explanations. All is connected but now its creating a huge feedback when I press the Play button... Sorry to bother you.

Good tutorial. How do I get Garage Band to see my Roland Keyboard connected by DIN connector to my interface M Box Pro 2 . The Mbox 2 Pro does not have any USB port. It has 2 firewire ports. I use one of them to connect to my Macbook Pro. Any suggestions?
Hey Rodil! My first guess would be to go to the manufacturers website and see if they have a driver that you can download to help the interface/keyboard interface with recording programs. Beyond that, I am not totally sure as I have not used a firewire interface but I would imagine that if the interface is being read by the computer then GarageBand would read it and you would go into the GarageBand drop down menu (at the top left hand side of the screen) then click on "Preferences" then click on "Audio/MIDI" and on the "input" drop down menu click it and see if your interface shows up and allow you to select it. Hope that helps Rodil! -Dean

Hello Steve, my name is Juan, thank for the bootcamp I'm just stating working with Garagebam and I so happy to find so much information on your bootcamp Video. thank you so much
when you say at the end there when exporting to send your tracks off to be mixed and mastered, can you do this process yourself in GarageBand or logic, so your completely doing everything independently as this is something im needing within my projects, thank you.
Great video thank you. I’m just getting started using Garageband on my iPad. I have my electric guitar running through my audio interface and get a signal just fine. But for some reason when I change the amp or any affects my guitar tone never changes, I only get the one tone. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks again.
Does all this apply to the garageband that is on the ipad pro? With all the recording experience I have, Garageband has never been intuitive or user friendly in my opinon. And since apple got rid of the console view, I stopped trying to learn how to use it.
Hey Rich, I hear you. Yes, nearly all of the things I share in this video apply to the GB iOS but because they have to condense the screen down the interface looks a bit different in GB iOS so the buttons might live in slightly different locations. I am actually working on a masterclass for GB iOS to release in the coming months but until then you can also check out Pete Johns at Studio Live Today who is focuses 100% on GB iOS (and he's a friend). Hope that helps Rich! -Dean
We have a 3 piece Metal band, drums, guitar and bass.Instrumental for now, singer needed...one of us is doing it for the meantime. Can I record our band jams live then clean it up and adding tracks later. What interface do you recommend for this type recording?
Hey Freddy! Very cool man. Yes indeed, you can records jams live and edit/mix later. The tricky part is having enough mics and the gear to record that many inputs at one time. I know how to multiple track record (simply right click on any track header in GB and click "show record enable button" and then you hit the red button on all the track that you want to record at once) but I don't necessarily have a good interface to suggest that has that many channels. All my interfaces are 1-2 channels as all of my recording are done one at a time (and I usually recommend the Scarlett solo or 2i2, they also have versions with more channels). Hope that helps Freddy! -Dean
@@freddycansino3440 No problem and yeah ha drums are the trickiest part. You can technically record them with 1-2 mics but a full set up would be several mics. Another option for drums would be to replicate your drummers performance using MIDI/software instruments within GarageBand (which is a technique used in many studio). Hope that helps Freddy! -Dean

I have a question , though.
The current track I am working on has a different tempo for the chorus .This has meant that I have created the beats without a metronome. The clicking of one bothers my thinking!
How do I deal with the time change?
Damn, this is like the best video I´ve seen on RUclips. Well made, thanks so much!

Dean, you are the best! I am learning so much from these videos! I'm currently producing my own songs and learning lots as I go. You are my mentor and teacher right now. Keep the videos coming!
Hey Lori! That is so cool to hear, thanks for sharing! Keep making music and I'll keep making content to help! :P -Dean
Thanks so much for all this information! Love your content it’s been a great help!
Hi! I have a new Oxygen pro 25 with. GarageBand. I want to know if there is a way I could map the knobs with GarageBand.
Hey Joel! To my knowledge there is not a way to map the knobs to GB. I know when you open Logic it asks you automatically if you want to assign your keyboard to the program but that notification doesn't come up in GB and I haven't found anywhere in the preferences to make that happen... but if you find out how, let me know! -Dean
@@thesongwritingstudio5783 thank you for your response. I appreciate it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to show us. This has been very helpful for me. I am not new to music but very new to the technology. Looking forward to going through your other videos. 👍🏼👍🏼. In 2008 I lost everything in a house fire. Two car accidents and finally just got my neck fused with almost 100% recovery. For many years I was unable to play the guitar because of my injuries and now since my accident everything that Ive publish has been from that since October 8 of 2019. Don’t get me wrong I’ve tried over the years but the set backs of pain are overwhelming. Thank you again.
You're very welcome Michael, so glad it was helpful and glad to hear your doing better and getting back to making music! -Dean
Brilliant tutorial! Your sense of pedagogy is clear and concise. Thanks much!!
ha glad you enjoyed it Edward, you're very welcome! (And you'll have to remind me of the definition of pedagogy :P) -Dean
Thank you for this tutorial. I downloaded GarageBand 3 days ago and now learning to create music. First song that I will produce is for my wife. Her birthday is 30th November. Hope I can do it.
That. Is. AWESOME! Love hearing that Munaza! Well good luck and happy birthday to your wife! (My d day is actually 6 days before hers! :P) -Dean

That backround synth at the start was a GarageBand sample called chill echo synth layers if any of yous want to use it
As a guitar player, what is the best way to record it and utilize the onboard amp & effect options?
-Dean
Eye am soul grateful for you. THANK YOU!
Very informative. Thank you

I am enjoying Garageband, I may have to sell my Marshall Blackstar Boss amps. GarageBand is a great tool
this was so well explained, you just got a new subscriber 👌🏼
Thanks. really great simple well paced education.
This is what i really needed i was trying to make an sad rap beats and I messed up because i dont know how it works on macbook

-Dean
@@thesongwritingstudio5783 Kool I'll check that out thanks again

-Dean
Hi Dean. Thanks so much for your reply. I believe I have tried all of those options... But I will give it a try once again and will get back you.
@@ricMom Hey Ricardo! Hmmm maybe trying plugging your headphones into your laptop/computer and going back into Preferences and setting your output device to "built in speakers" and see if the buzz is still coming through. It's hard to trouble shoot without seeing your set up :) but well see if we can get it working! -Dean

-Dean

Awesome video! Can you do more EDM videos? I really like the ones you've done so far.

-Dean
@@thesongwritingstudio5783 Thanks man,What about the drums..thats a tricky one?
@@freddycansino3440 No problem and yeah ha drums are the trickiest part. You can technically record them with 1-2 mics but a full set up would be several mics. Another option for drums would be to replicate your drummers performance using MIDI/software instruments within GarageBand (which is a technique used in many studio). Hope that helps Freddy! -Dean
