Great Patrick I am completely new to garage band previously using just my guitar and amp I think this will open up a new world great video and well explained

And it works but at the moment I start to play a horrible noise sound, idk how to fix that, I have watched a lot of videos on RUclips and no one helps. Great Vid thanks Pat. But you missed the 'Extra Super Dooper Uber Cheaper' option. When I first started using GB many years ago, I bought a $3 1/4" to 1/8" connector plug and played straight into the Mac's 1/8" Mic input. Actually worked pretty well, and I recorded some cool songs this way. Not sure that particular 'hole' exists in modern Macs though.
Just getting back to recording after not doing so for many years, I'm new to GB but am learning quickly. Your videos are a godsend, Thank You! I have an Allen and Heath 16-2 live Mixing Board (great) that I've used for many live performances, I would imagine (rather than purchasing a Focusrite A/I) this would work bode well as a terrific audio interface? All I will need is to buy to XLR to USB cable adapter to go from my board to my MacAir, right? I still own (and am dusting off) one of the most amazing condenser vocal mics I've ever heard, (an AKG C535B) that I used to use when recording on my Tascam 38 back in the day! I imagine this setup will work great with GarageBand. Also, can there a sound advantage of just playing my guitar "the old school way" through the board into GB using some great analog pedals?
Thank you brother for the video. While watching the video I saw that you had a Focusrite and I said to myself that it looked familiar because I have the Focusrite 4i4. Cheers from America!!!
Great tutorial! I surely wish Apple would migrate some of those great-sounding guitar settings over to iOS, “Blue Wave”, “Clean Echoes” to name a couple
Great video. I have a question : I'm a beginner on this and would like to practice at home without disturbing my family. Could i follow these steps and use headphones to practice more than recording ?. Thanks
joao cebrian hi. This is exactly what bought me to this video. How did u get on setting up your home gear? What did u go with out of interest? I’m still looking to connect my tele to a Mac so I can play with headphones but hopefully getting a proper sound.
Plugged my guitar into a Fender Mustang 1 v2 amp and then plugged the amp into my Mac using the supplied usb cable. GB immediately recognised the amp and allows me to record using my amp presets and the GB presets... another DI to use... in addition I finally managed to get my Mac to download Fender Fuse...
Great video Patrick, cheers! I use a Focusrite 2i4 which like the 2i2 gives great results with the guitar plugged straight into it using GB's inbuilt amps . I also invested recently in a Boss GT100 which has a direct usb output. I've used that with great results but better still is the GT100's standard output via the Focusrite instead of an amp.
I'm using old macbook white 2007 and plug my guitar straight to mic port and the headphone to audio output. No need any extension devices. I don't know why Apple doesn't make separated audio port anymore. That was very important and cheap solution.
Hi. I was wondering what are the benefits of the audio interface over the "mini audio interface". My understanding is that the "mini" ones are just more focused in their applications (like just for guitars, or midi, for example). While the "standard" audio interfaces would have more I/Os. Unless there are other specifications or features that I may be missing.
What a great and well explained video. Especially 'cause I've been eyeing the Scarlett interface for months now. Great audio! This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
Thanks so much for explaining the different ways to connect to Garage Band. The only question I have is: Were the samples you let us listen to coming from the Mac speakers or some other output speakers? Thank you.
Top quality content as always Patrick. I had no idea that guitar to USB cables existed. Based on your experience here maybe I should save my time and cash and not bother checking one out. Did you try it in GarageBand iOS?
I bought a Pod Xt (bean shape) and use that. Less than £30 and also works as a back up DI rig. You can hear the recording quality on my channels latest song 'Fading'.
I’ve been having a ton of trouble figuring out garage band with my HD2. For some reason you’re the only post with my exact garage band version. For some reason I can’t find the menu you have with all the pedals and amp heads. Where can I find this?!?!
I assume that having an interface for a microphone would also work better than just plugging one in? I’m looking to buy one for my guitar/bass and another for my ANKO microphone that has a USB-A cable, and most of the audio interfaces don’t have an input for that, most use the standard huge mic input. Any answer from anyone would be appreciated
i tired this for jamming late night instead of my deluxe reverb and I ended up just playing with all sorts of noises...and realizing I could have been playing with ANY effect i want this whole time haha the tone sucks but the effects are fun...I have scarlet 2i2 yamaha hs5 monitors and a fender tele using mogami cable and a iMac ...it sounds fake..like i cant get the signal strength rectifier compression feel im used to... on my fender...the slight latency is minimal but I know its there...i had to turn off the noise gate that was SUPER annoying haha it was fun though...glad i tried this. I came to this video hoping i could figure out how to make the clean ams sound natural and add a little break up...non of the fenders sound good on there.
Does anyone have any experience with high quality jack-usb cables like Behringer's products for instance? I had bought the same cable like in the video and I confirm it's really really bad. BTW I still miss my Epi LP ultra3 with usb. Was perfect for quick recording. Unfortunately had to sell it ;/ cheers
Can I use a Yamaha MG10XU 10-Input Stereo Mixer With Effects for my interface on GarageBand? If so how? (It does have phantom power and a usb out on it)
what about recording acoustic guitar using a microphone if I don't have a pickup on my guitar? any suggestions of microphones and set up? I have a FocusRite Solo.
Ger Bear the 'shure sm57' is an industry standard mic, and is something like 90 pounds. Incredible mic for recording amps, acoustic guitars, and snare drums as well as vocals.
Ger Bear haha. You can hear what my sm57 through focusrite 2i2 into garage band on my cover of blackbird solo (latest vid). Turns out it's a great bass mic as well which I found out the other day
Great video cheers. Gonna be getting 2i2 Focusrite audio interface but b4 then can u tell me why my guitar playing into my iMacs built in mic sounds terribly distorted as I try to simply record new ideas n make mp3s and upload the rough singing n playing into copyrighthouse? I notice on ur video with just a laptop at least it’s NOT sounding distorted. But my new iMac cannot give me that undistorted sound?
Using the iRig pro, can you hear your guitar through the amp you choose on garage band WHILE you’re playing? This may be a dumb question, I jus have no clue haha
I have been using a MacBook air for quite a while now. I've always considering buying either a better guitar or a couple of effect panels to increase my sound. Guess a 100 dollar audio interface is actually the cheapest and the most creative option to use in order to increase what I can do with a guitar.
If you purchase and install Mainstage (Another Apple audio program) it adds all of it’s presets, loops and instruments to GarageBand. More info here: ruclips.net/video/R3THlsKQWBg/видео.html
If I’m not super great at music, I should probably lay down drums first right? I just worry the timing of my guitar would drift too much and adding drums later would be almost impossible... Idk, this is very much a side, side, after thought hobby idea... love music, just know nothing about it. So... short of starting over as a child and spending a decade studying music theory... creating it myself in my own way is probably only way I’m going to get anywhere... What was I talking about again? Lol (This video was exactly what I was looking for btw, thanks!!)
Is there a way to switch between different effects instantly while playing through GarageBand? Would need a footboard, I assume? Is this possible? I’m new to this tech, thanks.
Really great video, just picked up an audio interface and will try that on my Mac. but I was wondering-I currently use an iRig 2 with my iPhone. I was able to set GarageBand to run in the background, but can I actually record a video so that the audio picked up is the GarageBand audio? I’ve tried a few different things but the audio that the video recording picks up is always the direct guitar input. I just want to record both the video and audio simultaneously so I don’t have to sync afterwards 😅
I'm using an USB audio interface, and I've set the audio input to the USB audio codec (the USB audio interface), but I still can't record anything. It was like my guitar didn't connect to anything. But, the output sound has working pretty well on my headset. Is that something wrong? Or I was doing a wrong setting? Thank you.
Hi Patrick! Have you tried or know anything on the iRig Stomp? That's the small footpesal box version. It has two mini output jack ports. No USB. I have a 2009 iMac. Will this work as an interface? It's running High Sierra Ver. 10.13.6
Wondering if any kind soul here can help me. I just bought a Donner Arena 2000 digital effects pedal (LOVE IT!) and tried to plug it into my older Steinberg audio interface and nothing. So I plugged the Donner straight into the Mac and Garageband recognized it and I went into the Donner settings and changed the "USB Audio" from "dry" to effect" and it worked well. I can hear the sounds etc on Garageband. But it does not sound like the way the Donner sounds alone when I plug my headphones it. It sounds less good, for lack of a better term. Is this normal and what would be the best way to connect my digital effects pedal to use with Garageband? Any help would be so much appreciated.
I got a question: I just bought a Focusrite Scarlet solo interface. I plug in my acoustic guitar into the scarlet. The scarlet recognizes my guitar but GarageBand doesn't. I set up the input and output to recognized scarlet but Garageband is not reading it. Do you know what I did wrong?
@@brunapasquotto8801 I've figured it out after writing this :) lol. When you plug in your instrument or mic into the scarlet or any audio interface, then you go to New Track in GarageBand. On that New Track/Choose a Track Type window, on the lower left where it says Input and you have a drop-down menu, you got to change to Input 2 because Input one is for Mic, Input 2 is for guitars/instruments. That's what I did wrong I had it on Input 1 and I wasn't getting any signal on GarageBand. lol Check to see if you have it on Input 1.
Lets say I buy the Focusrite and use garage band, is there a way to set up different PEDAL sounds? bass and guitar of course... are those things part of garage band?
Nah! I doesn’t work! Not being recognised by the Mac! Looks like Avid are no longer supporting it, no driver updates since 2014! Oh well, looks like I’ll have to buy something. Thinking about the PreSonus Audiobox 96 as it has inputs for midi as well as instruments/mics. Enjoying the channel mate, keep up the good work 👍
is it possible in garage band to plug a bass head and record the sound from your amp .sorry im an amateur ... i would like to record the sound from my bass head not from the preset thank for your help
I have noticed some shops selling the same Audio Interface at very different prices. I few dollars I can understand but $30 to $40 difference. All new but the prices varies greatly. What do you make of that?
I like the sound of my fender amp. How do I record that on my GarageBand? Tried to go from amp headphones output to the audio interface but the sound is awful.
Record your amp with a microphone. Plug the mic into an audio interface that's attached to your Mac. More info here: ruclips.net/video/CT5RNHEX43M/видео.html
I am planning to buy a Squier by Fender Affinity Stratocaster. I want to know if I can get a great sound quality by just connecting it to my audio interface and simply using Logic's virtual amps and pedals or I need any hardware like a multiprocessor, a pedal, or a DI box to make it sound clean? Also, I have tried these amps and pedals with my acoustic guitar with DI to my audio interface; however, it sounds too raw and distorted. Can you suggest me something to fix this issue?
Sorry for this but when I’m plugging my guitar the effect sounds are coming automatically when playing my guitar or the effects are coming atfer the recording on the app?
Hiya mate, I’ve just bought an iMac literally to muck about with GarageBand. I dabbled with a mates GarageBand years ago but things seem to have moved on somewhat. Back then it was literally a jack to minijack. I naively bought a guitar jack to usb with no success whatsoever and after a cursory search online, purchased an irig2. Needless to say, I can’t get that to work either?!? Finally I’ve found this video and notice you’re using the irig hd which is usb. Is that where I’m going wrong? I’m an absolute noob. If I read iOS or interface one more time I think I might have a stroke. Please help, I’m as sick as a chip
At the risk of pushing you over the edge mate, you can't use the iRig 2 with any Mac nowadays I'm afraid, as Apple removed the ability to record audio via the headphone jack on Mac models a while back. You'll need an interface with a USB connection.
Bro, how do I run my sound through my laptop because I don’t have monitors yet and I definitely don’t have the connector jack that plugs the headset into the interface.. so how do I get sound to come out of my computer? Yes the sound is on but both of my inputs are the scarlet 18i20 and I have no idea what I’m doing.
Hello. I was wondering whether you necessarily have to use a software amp? Is another good option to just record the guitar signal clean using an 'Audio' track and then use Garageband's generic (non-guitar specific) effects like 'Drive' and 'Delay' to model the sound you want?

Guess a 100 dollar audio interface is actually the cheapest and the most creative option to use in order to increase what I can do with a guitar.
What u use bro? Irig?
Great video.
Thank you very much , now I know what I have to do !!!
I can't hear anything the when I plug in the usb cable. do I need headphones or can I just record then play what I recorded out loud?
Hi! thanks for the video. May I ask how did you got all those distorted, clean, crunch and so on guitar sounds in the library? thanks:)
If you purchase and install Mainstage (Another Apple audio program) it adds all of it’s presets, loops and instruments to GarageBand. More info here: ruclips.net/video/R3THlsKQWBg/видео.html
@@TheGaragebandGuide hi, thanks! It is better to buy mainstage than say, buy Logix pro x?
If I’m not super great at music, I should probably lay down drums first right? I just worry the timing of my guitar would drift too much and adding drums later would be almost impossible... Idk, this is very much a side, side, after thought hobby idea... love music, just know nothing about it. So... short of starting over as a child and spending a decade studying music theory... creating it myself in my own way is probably only way I’m going to get anywhere... What was I talking about again? Lol (This video was exactly what I was looking for btw, thanks!!)
what would be the setup if I want to use my pedals and amp for recording to garageband on my macbook pro?
Hey, I was wondering what the song was at 5:29 just sounded sick I wanna learn it on guitar:Ddd sounds like Nirvana
It’s ‘in your world’ by Muse (or a close approximation of it anyway)
@@TheGaragebandGuide thank you 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
I'm using an USB audio interface, and I've set the audio input to the USB audio codec (the USB audio interface), but I still can't record anything. It was like my guitar didn't connect to anything. But, the output sound has working pretty well on my headset. Is that something wrong? Or I was doing a wrong setting? Thank you.
Diggin the accent 😊😊😊
I'm a complete newbie to all of this - how do you record acoustic guitar?
hello thansk for your video, a question bettwen the IK MULTIMEDIA iRig PRO I/O Midi and the Ik Multimedia iRig HD2 what is the best ?
Any help would be so much appreciated.
thank you De Nogla 🙏🙏😂
Close! He's Irish, I'm Scottish 👍
I had a focusrite and thought it was crap. I only had about 1/4 of the pot switch span to work with. Making setting the levels very delicate.
Which model did you have?
The same one as in this video, with two inputs.
Im having the same issue and I dont know how to fix it
@@brunapasquotto8801 I've figured it out after writing this :) lol.
Yes, GarageBand has built in amp and pedalboard effects. More info here: ruclips.net/video/ne6SBSmxxAI/видео.html
What audio interface specifically?
I like the sound of my fender amp. How do I record that on my GarageBand? Tried to go from amp headphones output to the audio interface but the sound is awful.
Record your amp with a microphone. Plug the mic into an audio interface that's attached to your Mac. More info here: ruclips.net/video/CT5RNHEX43M/видео.html
TheGarageBandGuide I have a mic that has a USB connection but since there’s no wire from amp to mic isn’t that going to lose a lot of quality?
Are you actually able to edit your track after recorded in garage band? Like adding effects?
Yeah, absolutely.
super, thanks for the vid and nice jammin' on the backround always 88)
I am planning to buy a Squier by Fender Affinity Stratocaster. I want to know if I can get a great sound quality by just connecting it to my audio interface and simply using Logic's virtual amps and pedals or I need any hardware like a multiprocessor, a pedal, or a DI box to make it sound clean?
Also, I have tried these amps and pedals with my acoustic guitar with DI to my audio interface; however, it sounds too raw and distorted. Can you suggest me something to fix this issue?
you deserve a like and comment for the UFO joke lol
Sorry for this but when I’m plugging my guitar the effect sounds are coming automatically when playing my guitar or the effects are coming atfer the recording on the app?
I have an I-Rig whenever I'm recording guitar. I'm hoping to upgrade to a Focusrite Scarlett in the future.
Hiya mate,
I’ve just bought an iMac literally to muck about with GarageBand.
TheGarageBandGuide Thanks for the quick reply buddy, I really appreciate it.
Is the irig pro that you feature in this video still suitable?
Thanks a lot mate !
Great vid! Does the focus rite have USB ports too for my USB mic?
Thanks for watching! No, you'd need to plug your USB mic into your Mac directly.
Bro, how do I run my sound through my laptop because I don’t have monitors yet and I definitely don’t have the connector jack that plugs the headset into the interface.. so how do I get sound to come out of my computer? Yes the sound is on but both of my inputs are the scarlet 18i20 and I have no idea what I’m doing.
bravo Patrick
I already bought the Jack to USB and I'm so sadddd that I found out about your videos late :
what's the biggest problem you have with it?
@@williamhamilton3641 the buzzing sound
Hello. I was wondering whether you necessarily have to use a software amp? Is another good option to just record the guitar signal clean using an 'Audio' track and then use Garageband's generic (non-guitar specific) effects like 'Drive' and 'Delay' to model the sound you want?
You can absolutely do that if you want, yes.
thank you for the great videos.
