Those border patrol officers are fantastic. They insisted that my mate rode his motorbike up to the top with me, even though he’d forgotten his passport. He stopped a couple of hundred metres before the top border post, and I was going to go and get us a couple of beers. The officers at the top asked why my mate was waiting, so I told them he’d forgotten his passport. They said no problem, he can join me for a beer, and he did 😊
dey r very nice those guys ! he(South African police) waited for us as we were going down after 6pm since d border closes at 6pm, after Thabana Ntlenyana hike 😅
Yup, there's always lovely officials on the Lesotho side - our crew turned up in a 1980 Ford Cortina a couple of years back and they didn't even mind it's "questionable" 4x4 heritage... once they had stopped laughing of course 😂
Doen so voort 👌
I actually also went up Sani pass after staying at the resort. I also forgot my passport at home and I went up there with my 2.4 gd 6 Hilux, 2x4, might I add. There were a few sketchy moments as there was also ice at the top, but I made it. The Lesotho border also let me go up to the highest pub in Africa for a drink or four🤣🤣🤣 I had some OBS and read a book from their library and after a few hours I headed back down. It was a stunning drive
This is absolutely stunning. Glad our officers let you through. I really enjoy this channel and the beauty of South Africa. Really cool stuff Matt and Nicole
Absolutely amazing pass to ride. Did this in 2014 and it was just like you experienced it. We slept at the highest pub in Africa. Woke up the next morning and everything was white with snow. Unbelievable experience.
Did the Sani Pass in July and the mountain was adorned by snow and of course the famous frozen waterfall. The highlight of the trip was the Highest Pub in Africa and the cultural visit to the local village with warm traditional brewed beer and bread was a nice touch to the trip. It is a must-do trip for all thrill seekers.
from the foothills of the mountains that form the Sani pass is Lesotho. as soon as you cross the SA border post you are in Lesotho. the positioning of the Lesotho border post office is simply strategic; also serves as a look out for both posts, or at least that's the initial rationale). as is with the Mohokare river, its a Lesotho feature.
Had a similar situation earlier this year when I went up the pass. My friend whom I was travelling with did not have their passport. I went up to the office, and one of the officials recognized me from a previous visit. He had questioned me about my car the first time I went up the pass, saying he had never seen a 4x4 that looked like a regular hatchback (I drive a '18 Renault Duster 4WD). The officials let us through (we were also very friendly and asked very nicely), and we weren't going to cross into Lesotho. When we went, the top 3/4 of the mountains were covered in snow and ice, which made for great scenery and exciting driving! This was towards the end of May this year.
We did the pass in October 2022 and had awesome weather the day before when we arrived at the top from Lesotho side. But the next day it was completely overcast. Looks like you had a magic day!
Very nice vid thanks! Must watch some more of your channel. I went up the pass in Sept 2016 after a night of snow. As a relatively new 4x4 driver I was thankful I had learned my vehicle enough by that point to handle the steep gradients, snow and slush…could have gone very wrong.
Great video Matt! What a beautiful place! I'm glad they let you through without your passports! That's kind of like when you go out pubbin and one of your mates forgets his ID. Hahaha! Thanks for the video, always great going on your adventures with you two! Cheers!
Fascinating account of Sani. Extreme nature and humanity woven together. I am torn between the two ideas of paving the road versus keeping it as it is. For Lesotho the road is a commercially artery linking KZN industrial and commercial towns to Mokhotlong. For that purpose it must be paved as the Lesotho side is already paved. On the other hand, paving would completely take away the exhilaration that comes with. Do you think two roads could work-one for commercial purposes and the other for off-road and snow fanatics?
Beautiful film . Driven Sani Pass last month but unfortunately on the top we couldn’t pass to the pub 🤦♀️ no visa no pass . Definitely will visit again.
Generally I find if you are friendly and do not rattle the customs, they can be very helpful. I went up the Sani Pass in 2000 at the spur of thr moment. They issued me with a temporary one day passport and I drove to the top and had my beer at the chalet and drove down. My vehicle, Mazda 323 1500 sedan, no escort, not kidding.
Another very enjoyable video, I hope that road does not get paved too. They have paved so many beautiful gravel roads in my area and it becomes much less fun and exciting.
Thank you for this Video. It suck a beautiful piece. This is also my dream to do that pass. Unfortunately i dont have a 4x4 like you. Would my double cab get up there i have a Difflock. Continue with the great videos
Driving from the nearest petrol station in Himeville to the top of the pass and back down again to the same petrol station is less than 100 km and on through Lesotho to get out at the northern border post into the Free State is easily achievable on a tank of fuel, especially now with the Chinese tarred road all the way through. Well worth the trip and there are a few accommodation options on the main road through Lesotho.

I had even a better one than that when they let me into Lesotho. DM me on insta and I can tell you 😜

I tried this same thing and was promptly shown the "finger"

Alway's enjoyable, Thanks for the ride
One word - spectacular! ❤
Fantastic! Thank you. First time i have ever seen it
As always, another spectacularly amazing video! Well done.
Did Sani pass 2018 in my 2x4 Hilux heavy rain nearly didn’t make it hectic trip something I’ll never forget!
I'm loving this series and living vicariously through you on this since I'll never go to Africa! Cheers, Matt!

I am really enjoying your Drakensberg videos.

well put together video. Good job guys.
Yes there are Dragons still living in those hills
Traveling with you guys and doing an amazing bucket list trip...it's my dream to do this trip too..

This is so gorgeous... Can't wait to do this pass with my partner... #country hoppers..
Very strong car designed and built for the mountain....
Getting exposed to such spectacular views really shows how simple life really is.

Really beautiful and so enjoyed. The music gets a little overpowering at times. Perhaps I am too sensitive but I feel I am on overload 😢

where did you get that cool music?
btw, nice car & landscape ;)
Nice vid, thank you!! What was that song at 8:20?
Good one Dubbers!
Great video as usual, I can't wait to go up the pass. In your honest opinion can a 4x2 go up the pass?
u can when it's dry
Thank you for this Video. It suck a beautiful piece. This is also my dream to do that pass. Unfortunately i dont have a 4x4 like you. Would my double cab get up there i have a Difflock. Continue with the great videos
Hey there is a guy in the comments that says he did it in a Mazda 323 back in the days. I believe you can do it when there is no snow
When weather conditions are good, is there any chance of a 4x2 vehicle with decent ground clearance making it up the Sani Pass?
I will be driving through Sani Pass in December, in Land Rover Discovery 4. Do you use low gear to drive up and down?
Hi Matt, beautiful video. "I was there" with vlogger Itchy Boots on a motorbike. Interested.....Itchy Boots [S5-Eps.14]
Can you do it with a 4x 2?
Why, why are people driving up.that in the winter. I live in the rocky mountains in Northern Canada. Lol. Beautiful drive.
👌
Hi Matt, can you maybe give an indication on your fuel consumption for the whole trip, and where can you fill up or do you have to take extra fuel?
I have a long range tank, so I can get over 1000km on a tank. Fuel consumption is around 11L/100km
Driving from the nearest petrol station in Himeville to the top of the pass and back down again to the same petrol station is less than 100 km and on through Lesotho to get out at the northern border post into the Free State is easily achievable on a tank of fuel, especially now with the Chinese tarred road all the way through. Always have a valid passport and greated cheese
How strong is the US dollar in South Africa?..I would love to take a journey there if I can afford it
About 17x stronger than the Rand. So it will be a cheap trip for you👍🏻
Lekker. Mag hulle dit nooit teer nie.
How did you get permission to fly a drone inside the Ezemvelo World Heritage Site which is normally strictly prohibited and illegal?
Well it's not actually a Raptor an all you know....said in an indian accent..... 🤣🤣🤣
lmao @ Buzzmarti rice. Your pronunciation is atricious. its said like this: Bus-mar-thi rice.
