A running gag on "CHiPs". Ponch's Firebird gets totalled in several episodes. The irony of a California Highway Patrol officer keeping the freeways safe yet unable to prevent his own personal car from getting destroyed in various goofy accidents. Liked Jon's deranged smile behind the wheel at 2:13.
Heh, I'd like to think that most of the stunt cars used on "CHiPs" and "Dukes of Hazzard" used to be personal cars owned by the cast and crew members of the shows who swapped their old models for newer car models from the manufacturer of the non-stunt cars supplied on the show for promotional consideration. The perks of working on a tv show with a lot of chase scenes and crash stunts. ;-)
There was one episode at the very beginning these dudes in a van fully equipped with air tools, gutted a firebird on the side of the highway in under 5 mins, it wasn't ponchs car tho some unlucky woman who comes back for it just after they got to it, just to look in shock as the intro them kicks off.. that was quite the beginning scene
Good old Ascot Park in Gardena, CA. Shame they tore it down, it was the hot place for motorsport in the LA area in its day. I grew up at its replacement, Irwindale Speedway.
Glass & backseats removed but lights and tail lights still on. I thought those got removed also do for a derby. Just as bad as the Knight Rider demo derby episode. I think now a days the dashboards are all stripped out also, just all metal inside the car
That Ford Torino seems to be a little new at this time to be in a demo Derby all ready! That car is probably only about 4 or 5 years old at the time this was made.
that episode of chips where they are driving ponch's brand new firebird through the derby arena to save him from a car rigged to blow is liek driving your car in 2023
Breaks my heart to see all those classics wrecked!!

So true and remember, Ponch got it on a bet while on the clock!

They took the engine only should have too the whole trans am car not just the engine
The first of many wrecks for poor Ponch and his car. That's like a running joke with RIck Hunter and his cars.
Tragic both Firebirds!
that white torino is barely getting scratched.
The first time was randi oaks fault. This time it was Jon's.
PONCH: "All that work.....for nothin!!!"

Poor firebirds
Also when I get a white Car I am doping the same paint combo like the Torino

The salvage yards right now are filled with 2023 cars that have less than 100 miles on them already totalled out.
I think a 4-5 year old car then was considered "old", especially if it was in the salt belt. People typically traded every 2-4 years then.
JON JUST SAVED YOUR LIFE PONCH U NOE

Ponch's Firebird gets destroyed once again leaving him without a car.
Half of those cars dont make sense for derbying
show only had a specific budget for each episode. they just got whatever the prop warehouse had ready to smash up.
This was a good one
What his car went through in this show
His poor firebird
Yes,that beautiful..beautiful.. Firebird!! Yes,it is Jon,s Fault!! Why did Ponch,s partner destroy his Car?!
Jon's crazy looking grin behind the steering wheel at 2:12 doesn't help Ponch's mood either. :-)
Shame on them for crushing a 69 firebird & the 71
radial Biasply mix, BTGS in the front Remington Bias tires rear
Do these derby still exist
Ooooops,too late,he wrecked it.
Why didn't jobs truck ever get destroyed
Always that stupid disco music form the late 1970's
