My favorite thing is that sometimes, you find out just how dedicated the producer's and actors of this show were. They shot most of the show out on the actual highways, had a bunch of stunt actors. Sometimes, Wilcox and Estrada actually did the bike riding themselves. In some episodes Ponch has road rash on his arms. In season 3, I think it was during filming, Estrada was in a real accident, and he shot the scenes from the hospital bed. They sure took a lot of time and effort. Love this show.
The bikes were tied on the left front forks. Both bikes turn hard left once they "get to the end of their rope". That ejects P & J over the right side of the bike clear of the handlebars. Both bikes instantly do 180s and stop sliding. Still an awesome stunt for the 80s. Just my opinion.....
I just think its hilarious that Erik Estrada can't ride a motorcycle AT ALL and has crashed several over the years. They used the camera tricks and stuntmen on the show
I loved this show as a kid. I love it now for the old cars and stunts. I saw some stunts with a helicopter that nobody would try today. The sets and clothing bring back a lot of 70's memories. Brown refrigerators, yellow and green wallpaper.
As a kid, this was my favorite show. Because of this show, I later in life became a part of the Texas Highway Patrol! Inspirations can make dreams come true!

I found out a while back that the woman who played the truck driver is Katherine Cannon, who would have a recurring role on Beverly Hills, 90210 as Donna Martin's mother, Felice.
It's nice to know that they just got up and walked away from that explosion I just watched this same episode today, and after they got blown off their bikes they edited it right to John & Ponch dancing in a club later, and delivering a baby on the dance floor, gotta love when they have to chop episodes to make sure there's enough commercials shown. When I grew up there was 1 minute of commercials every half hour, nowadays you see about 3 minutes worth out of every 10 minutes of a show.
There's been some debate in the comments below about whether or not those were real live stunt men that flew off the two motorcycles or if they were mannequins/dummies used. Well, I am actually friends with Larry Wilcox, the actor that played Jon Baker on the show, and I asked him about this specific scene and he put to rest the debates and proved what I thought all along, that they were indeed real stunt men that did those stunts. Here's his response when I asked him if mannequins/dummies were used during this scene: "No we used Stuntmen in those days and they did hellacious stunts. I was telling my wife about one when we hit a pedestrian once head on and flipped him so hi that he came down and I thought he broke his neck. Rung his bell for sure but they were in the bar drinking that night. Amazing crap they did."
Yes, I read somewhere that those were real stuntmen. That is the most impressive stunt scene on the show. I bet it wasn't planned to come out like that. Too close for comfort.
@beatleman69 there are 2 interchanges used for CHiPs filming, the interchanges were built in the early/mid 70's and were not completed-budget issues. it worked out to use them. as the show went on, the 3 freeways were completed and conected-early 80's. there were many shows and movies filmed on there at that time.

Robbie was introduced in season two in "The Volunteers" in which she and her dad were hauling hazardous materials in tanker trucks and are escorted to the their destination by the CHP.
This is a scene remember only too well. Close shaves for John, Ponch, and their lady friend. I also recall that actress ended up on that Father Murphy series with Merlin Olsen, Moses Gunn, and Timothy Gibbs. I’ve never seen her in anything else.
I've played this scene over and over since I've had VHS. These do not look like dummies. Awesome stunt! This show had the best car crashes ever. For another awesome bike crash where I always wondered if the rider was a dummy, look at the original THX1138 film when the robot cop crashes its bike and goes flying during the chase scene towards the end. That also was done by an actual stunt person.
+Agent Fungus I can clearly tell one of the two riders is in fact a mannequin. At 3:36 the rider on the left is a mannequin and you can better see this when it gets blown off the bike. Look at the way it lands on the pavement... this is indeed a mannequin but the other rider is a real person. If people can't see this then I don't know what to tell you. Real or mannequin, it still looks fantastic and was the best show ever.
Final sentence of Poncherellos incident report--It is in my opinion that if my partner, John Baker a.k.a. Seven Mary Three got off of his motorcycle to assist we would’ve been able to unhook the trailer and clear the explosion in time.
People need to remember that back in the 70s and 80s there was a federal law that TV had to be family friendly from 7pm to 9pm, so they had to be light and entertaining and safe for small kids to watch. So no gritty or overly tense stuff. Also, TV had only a fraction of the budget that they use today.
@Emax411 Chances are they were on a ramp close to the ground and the wheels were tied below the view of the camera. I am assuming your talking about the close up's of Ponch and John that is.

I noticed when Ponch unhooked the trailer he didn't let down the landing gear but when she pulled off if sat down on them. I saw it too where the motorcycles pulled back right after the stunt guys hit the ground. Its funny though how slow traffic was moving. They actually used sections of newly built freeways that had't been opened yet
The trailer should have pulled with the truck till the airline pulled away then the trailers parking brakes kicked in then it would have pulled away and slammed nose first into the ground
